Plus K to you and all the guys on the past couple of pages ( Bengalsrule, jdex, pg04, amh63, with age, scooterman, and spwood). It has been a good year for the SUNYAC board. A lot more conversation than past years. You were a big reason why. We hope you won't be a 0ne and Done guy. Bengalsrule and I have seen quite a few of those over the years. Fair weather fans. We've been here whether our teams were 8-18 or 27-3 because that's what a fan does. You seem to be one of the better fans that Oneonta has in their corner...even when you no longer had the big rooting interest you had for the previous 4 years. ;)  I'll get that karma figure into double figures for you tomorrow. ;D

Some thoughts while trying to figure out how my Bengals will stop Clifton Lyerly.................

All SUNYAC Candidates - Buffalo State version

There are 5 players who are ranked in top 10 of 6 "SUNYAC Only" Stats categories. 2 of those 6 are ....

Nico Mclean - 6th in rebounds, 10 in ft%, 2nd in assists, 5th in assist turnover, 1st in steals and 6th in mins played. Nico finished ranked 1/2 in steals and assists, a rare combo. (Only other player in the past 5 plus years to finish 1st and /or 2nd in both assists and steals was C. Manning of Plattsburgh- twice). Mclean was also 15th leading scorer in SUNYAC!

Mike Henry - 10th in scoring, 3rd in rebounds, 1st in fg%, 9th in assists, 7th in steals and 10th in mins played! Only Plattsburghs K. Richardson (most likely POY candidate) had a better fg% & rebound combo (1st in rebounds and 2nd in fg%) than Henry's (3rd in rebounds and 1st in fg%)!  Mike Henry is the only front court players to be in the top 10 in assists !

also

Jordan Glover  Although Jordan has been out injured for the past 2 weeks, his stats are still SUNYAC worthy. Jordan is 1 of only 8 players with at least 5 - top 10 rankings! 6th ft%, 5th assists, 2nd in Assists to turnover ratio, 2nd in steals per game and 8th in minutes! Only Decker (Geneseo) and Sortino (Oswego) had more top 10  rankings for pt guard position!

Lovell Smith top 10 in 4 categories 8th in scoring, 4th in fg%, 8th in blocks and 8th in steals. Only Plattsburgh's K. Richardson had a better blocks/steals ratio (4th blocks & 6th steals), than Lovell's (8th in  blocks/8th in steals) Note : There are only 10 players in SUNYAC that are ranked in top 10 in 4 or more categories!

SUNYAC teams in the Regional rankings might have been helped out a bit by NYU and Rochester both losing yesterday. NYU can't win the UAA automatic bid so they can only go dancing with a Pool C bid. Rochester will play Emory for a...winner take all... automatic NCAA bid next Saturday. Both teams currently 10-3 in the UAA. NYU with an 8-5 conference mark is at Brandeis, a team they beat 69-67 when they met in NY. NYU is tied with Chicago for 3rd place but holds the tiebreaker solely for bragging rights since there is no conference tournament. Chicago needs to win their final game and hope NYU loses to Brandeis to actually finish ahead of NYU in the conference's final standings.

Even if Rochester loses another game I think they will still be ranked #2 in the East, ahead of any SUNYAC team in the final rankings, if Plattsburgh wins the SUNYAC title, because all remaining YAC teams will also have another loss in the conference tournament.

So we need to root for Rochester to beat Emory and St. John Fisher to win the Empire 8 tournament so both those teams secure automatic bids. That way another SUNYAC team will be at the head of line in the East hoping for a PooL C bid. That will still be determined by how many conference leaders actually win their conference's automatic bids. A lot of upsets will probably mean no additional YAC team will get in.

Congratulations to Lovell Smith who was selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Week for his 2 huge games over the weekend. It was the 2nd time that Lovell was chosen as the POTW this season.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

Lovell Smith, Buffalo State
Buffalo, NY / McKinley

Smith averaged 31.0 points in a pair of wins to help Buffalo State secure a playoff berth on the final day of the regular season. Smith scored 35 points to go with eight rebounds and seven steals in Friday's 94-79 win over New Paltz. He followed that up with 27 points in Saturday's 96-86 win against Oneonta. Smith shot 63.6 percent (28 of 44) from the field in the two games.

Congrats to Lovell! The team did Bradley Proud this weekend...

Darn NYU and their phony schedule! Of course I only care because of the futures tournament...

The new D3hoops Top 25 Poll has been released and Plattsburgh State moves up 2 spots to #21 and has 149 points, a gain of 89 points over last week.

Lancaster Bible is still #15 even though their point total went down by 24 points to 260 from last week's season high of 284.

Rochester and NYU, who were tied in the Others Receiving Votes category last week at #26 with 43 points each, both slid  down in the poll with losses last week. Rochester is now #31 with only 11 points and NYU with just 7 points is now #35.

St John Fisher, after a 2-0 week and claiming the regular season crown in the Empire 8, is back in the poll with 8 points, just ahead of NYU in the #34 spot.

No other team in the East Region is mentioned.

Here's a link to the complete poll:       http://www.d3hoops.com/top25/men/2015-16/week11

Do I seem like a one and done guy? ;)
I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you guys this past season.
Plus I have Lawrence Coleman and Mike McElroy back next season for the Red Dragons.
Maybe just Maybe they can make it back to the playoffs next season.
It was an epic fall for my Oneonta Red Dragons, would have never thought in a million years this team which came out 5-1 would go 4-8 the rest of the way in conference.
Still scratching my head on that one.
It just might be a Buffalo State vs Plattsburgh final.
Enjoy the playoffs
I certainly will be watching

No, you do not seem like a one and done guy, however players graduate and the closeness a person  feels for the program becomes more distant as that happens. Then life gets in the way and the visits to the website become less frequent and ultimately they stop altogether. I'm glad you won't be riding off into the sunset. 8-)

I was surprised when you said that Mikey McElroy will be back. The roster lists him as a senior and I didn't realize that he had another year of eligibility left. Glad to hear that. I'll get to visit with him at least one more time and tell him how many points he'll lose by when he plays the Cardinals up here next year. ;D

It was a disappointment I'm sure, for the players to miss out on the playoffs after such a great start. That's the nature of our league though. There are always a bunch of good teams fighting it out till the final game. It's too bad that they changed the format from 8 teams making the playoffs to just 6 teams. We generally have 7 or 8 teams that are capable of winning the tournament. We need to get more basketball coaches to become  AD's so they can be change it back to an 8 team tournament.

Having McElroy and Coleman back next year is a good start. They are both all conference caliber players. It won't surprise me to see them back in the tournament next year.

Two big games tonight. Should be good viewing.

Love College Hoops especially the SUNYAC.
I have been following the SUNYAC for years.

Yes With Coleman and McElroy the Oneonta Red Dragons have a great start for the 2016-2017 season.
If I could borrow your Magic Wand for a quick second and give them the Magic Spell I think that will do the trick to get the Red Dragons back into the playoffs next season.

This league is one of the most competitive conferences in the country, on any given night if YOU DON'T BRING IT, your going home a loser.

2 Great matchups tonight. Both games should go down to the wire.

Love Oswego over Geneseo and Buffalo State over Brockport

Enjoy the Games

All time, I'm reminded now why I have enjoyed the majority of your post...and predictions!!!  I "bummed" a ride with a few "friends" to the Brockport game about 30 mins away from the gym that has seen more Bengals seasons end than any other in my 8+ years of watching Buff State ball.  Hoping to end that trend!

Tuesday  February 23rd   Two Big Playoff Games

Buffalo State        Brockport        7:00 PM

The Bengals have renewed life and their hopes for an NCAA berth are still alive. They also have a reason to keep their season alive that's bigger than a basketball game. The Golden Eagles hold a big edge in this rivalry with a 10-2 record in the last 12 games. The good news for the Bengals is both of those wins have come at Brockport.

The oddsmakers have made the Golden Eagles a slim 3 point favorite here and I think this game will be a barnburner. Hard to pick against Brockport at home though so I have them winning by a 79-75 final score.

SUNY Geneseo        Oswego State        7:00 PM

Oswego is in a nice position after a slow start to conference play. Getting a home game, when it looked for a while they may be the odd team out, is a big accomplishment over the latter part of the season.

These teams are 11-11 over their last 22 meetings but in the 2 times they have met recently in the playoffs, the Lakers have come away with the win. Tonight they are 3 point favorites to do so again. I think the Lakers are a stronger team than the Knights and see them winning this game by a 76-71 final score.

magicman

Geneseo leads Oswego by a 33-28 score at the break.

Justin Ringen with 14 points and 9 rebounds at the break. Kevin Crockett with 5. No John Decker tonight for the Knights as the 2nd leading scorer on the team must be injured.

Kyle Coveley with 10 points and Dustin Pond with 7 lead the Lakers.

magicman

Brockport ahead of Buffalo State  by a narrow 38-34 score at the half.

Hamed Shamseldin and Levi Pace with 7 each for the Golden Eagles.

Lovell Smith with 10 points and 6 rebounds to lead Buff State. Mike Henry with 8 points and 3 rebounds.
