Just back from Geneseo. jdex, as usual, thanks lots of pertinent stats. However, the defining stat tonight was turnovers: 18 for Port - almost excusable for a team that relies on a lot of transition - again, almost; 28 for the Knights.

Exciting first half, beyond-belief-pathetic 2nd.  A dark and stormy night with unforced turnover, after unforced turnover....you get the point. Not many defensive gems in this mess. The Z's were no small part of the problem: called a rash of walks on everything that moved for a 4-5 minute span; then called more carries over the next 4-5 minutes than I've seen year-to-date; then called nothing at all for a while. Sherod Harris (he and his brother are worth the price of admission - well, anywhere except at 6-bucks-a-game Geneseo) spent more time in conference with the Z's than with Coach W. Especially liked the arm around the shoulder move pose.

Knights down 11 with 5:30 remaining and my ever-the-optimist sister commented that it was still a 4 possession game. She paused for a moment and continued, well, that presupposes that they (Geneseo) will actually take 4 shots before the game is over. By the 2:30 mark, they had managed to get one to the rim.

Terrific scoring balance from the Eagles.

Ah well, expected more from this game, but sometimes mediocrity does get rewarded.

Two big wins for Brockport basketball last night...

I think that the realingment discussion is full of all kinds of pitfalls and great ideas.  I also think that it could be done on sport by sport basis, and unless a sport has 10 or more teams in it stay in one division, and do some type of balance scheduling.

If Morrisville drops out, that will really drop a wrench into the mix... as 11 is one of the toughest numbers to schedule.

On another thread:
The schools are all strong in different sports... so every school can have its day.  I think New paltz has improved over the years, but not sure it will match the tradition of success that Geneseo has shown.

And anohter one:
Oneonta will be a D-III soccer power for several years.  What prompted the change in classification.

AND it is cold everywhere in NY at this time of year... not just Potsdam and Plattsburgh!  brrrrr...

While somewhat off topic, here's the memo from the Oneonta president regarding reclassification.

Somewhat tough to be the lone ranger I would think.

Oneonta came down to III slate last fall after having pretty fair run in I ranks for about 15 seasons. Red Dragons were still SUNYAC soccer in late 80s. Of course, neighbor Hartwick is I in city housing National Soccer Hall of Fame. Both schools were grandfathered to I when NCAA required members declare affiliation to one classification in all sports. A few were allowed to stay I, with other sports III, such as Hobart lacrosse, Hopkins lacrosse, Clarkson pucks, SL pucks and the like. OSt returning to III soccer should heighten SUNYAC boot play
As release from 11/05 pointed out, financial considerations (as in scholarships) certainly was driving factor

Hoops tonight: NP at Baruch

jdex

New Paltz holds on at Baruch for 65-64 win. Deja vu alll over again? Not quite. Unlike previous night when NP saw late lead slip away at home to Cortland, NP saw 65-60 edge at 1:04 dwindle but ..... Baruch misses at horn. Hawks 38-33 at half. Connect on 23x51fg. A. Foluke-Henderson 17 pts(8x12fg) to reach career 1,000. Adds 7 rebs; T. Cannon 16 pts(6x11fg), 12 rebs, 5 stls, 4 assts; J. Hauser 11 pts, 5 rebs.

Corts D. Jutton in Tuesday win surpassed 1,000 career pts

Dandy weekend to be in Cortland. Every Potsdam game this season is a surprise - which of the multiple personality Bears shows up for this one? Cortland's Mike Lewis is one of the better SUNYAC frosh and worth a look. Bears Damon Brown can impress on the offensive end when bears remember to give him some minutes.

Ski Greek Peak Saturday morning. New snow and a toddy or two. Brilliant!

Plattsburg for the afternoon finale. Cards should be fresh - no Friday game - and motivated. Without another shot at Port, no need to look past anyone; Curles need to continue to win out for a shot at the top. Don't expect Dragons to make it easy.

Common sense puts the Dragon's on an 0-2 weekend - but they have put out good efforts all season, and when the Bears decide to lose, no one can stop them.

Eagles go 2-0; at Fredonia Friday; at home v. Oswego Saturday. Lakers desparate for a win, but without a point - what's the point? Geneseo should be smart enough for Saturday win. Weekend upset: Oneonta has too much fun with an open Friday and stumbles at NP.

Was in Geneseo's "new" basketball gym for first time Tuesday. Great looking floor, excellent lighting, scoreboards, sound.... Downside: Hosted bigger Super Bowl parties than this facility holds, but at $6 a ticket - seating size not an issue during the season.

Did Geneseo renovate that old gym that was in the back of the facility? That floor, I think, would be much better for fans and players a like. Ask any opposing SUNYAC team and they hate going to the terrible floors at Fredonia and Geneseo's old one. I think with the smaller capacity it makes it more of a high school gym, but it gives the Knights a home court advantage, where the fans are closer.

jdex

Have shifted to Bradenton area. Posting a ????? We shall see

jdex

Only two games to fry on Friday fish day. Bport and Pdam have road hooks baited for Freds and Corts, respectively.

Saturday tier I tilt has Oswego at 'Port. Oneonta big date at NP, while Gens and IT rumble in Utica (or is it NY Mills). Streaking Pburgh is at Corts

jdex

Cortland 89, Potsdam 74.  D. Jutton 28 pts, D. Maggiacomo 20. Red Dragons land 14 threes. D. Brown paces Bears

jdex

Cortland on fire from a distance. Sinks 14x29 3s and 29x54fg overall with 17x18ft display. D. Jutton 28 pts, 5 rebs; D. Maggiacomo 21 pts; C. Niehoff 13 pts, 5 rebs; J. Miolen 9 pts; P. Oliver 8 pts, 4 rebs; M. Lewis 6 pts, 7 rebs. Potsdam 24x58fg, 7x22 3s, 19x29ft. D.Brown 20 pts, 7 rebs, 4 assts; B. Graney 12 pts;T. Reinhardt 10 pts;B. Siskavich 10 pts, 5 rebs

jdex

Brockport routs host Fredonia 74-51. Making 16x26 shots, Eagles soar to 43-17 halftime bulge. Make 27x46fg, half of 16 treys. Sherod harris 14 pts(5x7 3s) 3 assts, 3 stls in 23'; C. Parrish 13 pts(5x6fg) 6 rebs in 20'; J. Johnson 12 pts(5x7 3s) in 13'; Shawn Harris 5 assts, 3 stls. Freds 19x54fg. K. Reichlmayr 10 pts(4x8fg) 8 rebs, 5 stls

Weather in Cortland was terrible. Potsdam was worse. Only 11 traveled; point guard Scott Mitchell wasn't one of them (illness) and sorely missed. As already noted, torrid shooting night for the Dragons. Great to see Cort's frosh Mike Lewis get big minutes and play solid along with Niehoff (soph). Careful Bears, opportunity to finish the season with 9 - 10 losses is available. No comments on any individual Bear. Lots of minutes from almost all in attendance; ergo, lots of blame to go around. (S. Dobbs might consider shortening bench to save several from further embarassment. A cheap shot? Perhaps. Accurate? Absolutely. This team is not 9 - 10 deep and pretendng it is...). Check the box for gruesome details. Cards remain hope of the north.

jdex

Z,
Sorry to hear Cortland climate a tad unsettled (not really since we're deep in the heart of Florida -- deep enough to miss tragic central FL scene). Hope you can reach slopes of the Peak for some downhill action (Pdam imitation?) and pint or two. Should you get a chance take in nearby Hollenbeck's Cider Mill. Outstanding cider, pies, fudge, etc. Bruce H. a jolly good chap

Thanks for pointing out Mitchell absence. Dragons will have handful in Pburghers. But should Corts light it up again, who knows. Don't know  what story is with Paul Oliver, rawboned 6-6, 250 lb frosh. Hasn't played of late till Friday. He and Lewis certainly give future hope. Oliver also a football TE

bports

After winning 5 straight sunyac games  Bport has put a little distance between them and the pack. I realize its only 1 game but they also hold the tie breaker with the 3 teams behind them. Brockport now has the luxury of finishing up with 5 of there last 6 games at HOME. The only roady is to sunyit. With that said i realize sunyac is always very unpredictable but this is setting up nice for the eagles. Today is an important game against oswego, the eagles are out to avenge an earlier loss to the lakers. The lakers have the luxury of not playing in the last week and the port was on the road at fredonia last night. Last time these 2 played i think the port was whistled for like 40 pf's. The lakers shot something like 60ft's? I dont expect that to happen this time and i expect bport to pull away in the 2nd half i will go with 91-76 Bport!!
