D3hoops Guru Pat Coleman and Hoopsville's Dave McHugh just announced, live on the Hoopsville Pre-Game show from Salem, the D3hoops All-American Teams.

Kyle Richardson from Plattsburgh State was named to the D3hoops Second Team

Brian Sortino from Oswego State was named to the D3hoops Third Team

The SUNYAC was one of very few conferences that had 2 players make the All-American Teams.

Great job by these 2 outstanding players to gain this national honor.

Good luck to the Plattsburgh Women's Ice Hockey team in the national championship game tonight!

I tuned in after the basketball when it was still 3-1. Looks like the threepeat is in reach. They're playing great.

Further congrats to the Geneseo Men's hockey team for defeating Williams 2-1 tonight and advancing to the D3 Frozen Four. I hope an emotional year for the blue knights can end in a championship!

Cardinal Ladies win the National Championship in hockey by defeating UW-River Falls 5-1 on Saturday. This is the 3rd straight National Championship for the Plattsburgh State Women which puts them in pretty rarified company.

Hope the Geneseo Men can win the National Championship at the upcoming Frozen Four. If the Ice Knights can pull that off it would be a awesome year for the SUNYAC.

Kyle Richardson played in his final game as a Division III basketball player on Saturday afternoon at the NABC All-Star Game in Salem, Virginia. Like he did so many times this year, Kyle went out with a bang recording a double-double to end his collegiate career. Kyle ended up with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He also had 3 assists and a steal. He was the only player on either team to record a double-double.

Magicman... the best I can try and explain it on the NABC side is that the decisions to pick just two players from each region to play in the All-Star game is going on separately from the All-District and thus All-American voting. They can't wait until that voting is complete to line up players to come to Salem for the All-Star game. They are working on that game two/three weeks in advance. So you are trying to make your argument based on information after the fact for the committee trying to select the all-stars for the game. Sure, it looks odd, but I can assure you the committee is working very hard to figure out who should be at the game and I know it can get very political behind the scenes (not for them, but for those lobbying them). And it isn't cut and dry. In the Great Lakes, several of the conferences had Player of the Year nods go to non-seniors making it a bit more complicated (easy to start your selections with the POYs and go from there).

I see why you would be perplexed, but if you realize there are basically two difference committees working on different agendas, it might make more sense. Basically, the all-star committee is trying to pick guys to come to an event while voting for All-District and All-American has even started let alone is no where close to finishing.

Dave,
Thanks for the reply.

Coach Curle basically told me the same thing when he got back from Salem. There were recommendations made without doing due diligence on who had the best season in the East Region. Upon further review it was quite clear who should have been chosen. Fortunately for all those involved it all worked out in the end. :D

It is a tough process on the committee trying to put it all together. They are taking the temperature of things, they are trying to adjust for teams in or out of the tournament along with who may or may not make it to Salem anyway... then adjusting for those who may or may not be interested in participating. You have to make a guess on the fan vote after just ONE weekend of the tournament while you are holding in reserve players you think will be on the roster when the 16 teams are whittled down to 4... it is a moving target to say the least.

Hey guys, quick question. So SUNY-Canton isn't in the SUNYAC as of last year, but I saw that they are making the transition to become fully D3. Does that mean they will be independent for awhile or are they planning to join the SUNYAC? If anyone has any info I would love to know!

Smitty,

To the best of my knowledge Canton will not be joining the SUNYAC. They may want to but I don't think the conference wants an uneven number of teams. Currently there are 10 teams in the YAC and since the conference plays a double round robin that means 18 conference games. I don't believe they want to go to 20 conference games, which they would have to do with 11 teams.

Several years ago 2006-07 there were as many as 12 teams in the SUNYAC, as Morrisville State and SUNYIT were members of the conference. The conference was broken into two division of 6 teams each, an East and West. An East team played the other 5 teams in the East twice and the 6 teams in the West once for a total of 16 games. Then SUNYIT left the conference and joined the weaker NEAC conference after the 2007-08 season, because they thought they would have a better chance of winning a conference and getting an automatic bid. (Which was true and they have won that conference several times since leaving the SUNYAC) They never went to the NCAA tournament while they were a member of the SUNYAC conference.

With 11 teams in the SUNYAC after the departure of SUNYIT it left the conference with an unbalanced schedule for the 2008-09 season. The teams still played 16 conference games by playing 6 teams twice and 4 teams once to make 16 games, but it wasn't an ideal situation. After the 2008-09 season Morrisville State decided to follow SUNYIT to the NEAC conference, seeking a way to make the NCAA tournament. It worked out well for them also as they have won the NEAC's automatic bid 3 times since joining the conference.

Starting with the 2009-10 season the SUNYAC with 10 teams has played the 18 game, double round robin schedule, mentioned above.

I would think Canton's best bet of joining a conference would be to seek admission to the NEAC. That conference presently has 13 teams split into 2 divisions, North and South. The North division has 6 teams and plays 17 conference games. The South division has 7 teams and plays 18 conference games. Canton is closer to all the teams in the North division so it would seem to be a good match to slip them into the NEAC North and then everybody in the conference would play 18 conference games. That would be my guess as to where Canton may end up but it is only a guess on my part and I have no actual information suggesting that will happen.

Perhaps the possibility exists down the road, that Canton and another state school (possibly Alfred State who is also  joining Division III)might wish to join the SUNYAC. Then, there would be 12 schools and 2 divisions as before which would be more feasible then having just 1 school added. I just don't think that will happen.

Thanks a ton for the post magicman, full of some pertinent info! After my original post I came across this article, it gave me a lot of insight on the current status for Canton. The D3 conference I follow most closely is the MIAC, where there is 11 men's basketball teams, so each team plays a 20 game conference schedule. I am so used to it I never really thought anything of it, however, it does severely limit the non-conference schedule and I can understand why the SUNYAC would not want to make that move. Now the MIAC just needs another team to join to create two divisions....

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

I can tell you that Canton is not joining the SUNYAC anytime in the near future. They actually tried to join the NEAC the last few years. But in January, that conference voted to deny them and Alfred State and put a moratorium in place for the next two years. Canton and Alfred State basically don't have a home and I am not sure where they will find a home in the near future.
