Geneseo State 86 Plattsburgh State 71

The final score doesn't indicate how close this game was for the first 36 minutes. It was a 2 possession game at 76-70 with 3:57 left in the game but Geneseo came down and got a layup from Jack Eisenberg to build the lead up to 8 points. The Cardinals came down, misfired, and Eisenberg was fouled. He made both free throws, the Knights had the first double digit lead of the game, and time was running out on the Cardinals. Plattsburgh came up empty the next 5 times they had the ball, as they turned it over or were throwing up shots from long distance, and the Knights increased the lead to the final 15 point margin.

Congratulations to Geneseo. They played better than Plattsburgh did, especially in the 2nd half and deserved to win this contest. I said in my earlier write up about the game, that Justin Ringen had struggled this season but I expected to see him at or near his previous All Conference form. He was all of that, as he captured scoring honors with 21 points.

If you had told me that John Decker would "only" get 16 points tonight, I would have bet that Plattsburgh would have been a double digit winner. If you told me that Plattsburgh would win the rebounding battle by a 49 to 32 margin I would have guessed that the Cardinals would have won this game by a fair margin. Instead, despite both of those stats, Plattsburgh was the double digit loser.

The game was a back and forth affair throughout most of the evening with 5 ties and 11 lead changes. The Cardinals went up early 9-4 and the Knights countered with a 14-2 run to go in front 18-11, forcing a Plattsburgh timeout. The Cards regrouped and outscored the Knights 12 -5 over the next 4 minutes to knot the score at 23 apiece with 7 minutes left in the period. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the half until Plattsburgh forged ahead by a 32-27 margin on a dunk by Eric Mack and a jumper by Eli Bryant. Justin Ringen then hit back to back 3 pointers in 29 seconds to erase that deficit and put the Knights back in front. Plattsburgh got a pair of free throws from Brandon Johnson and another dunk from the high flying Mack to go into the break up 36-33.

Plattsburgh opened the 2nd period with 3 baskets in their first 3 possessions to open up their largest lead of the game at 42-35. But once again Ringen was there with a pair of 3 pointers and when Jon Patron scored for the Cardinals, Jack Eisenberg fired up another 3 pointer for the Knights to put them in front 44-43. Zack Coleman scored on a drive for Plattsburgh for another lead change only to have Eisenberg bury another 3 ball.
John Decker would follow with a pair of fee throws and then he drained one from downtown and the Knights were up 52-47 and never trailed again. They had made five 3 pointers in 4:43 and went on to make 4 more from long range before the end of the period.

That was the story of the game. Geneseo was 12 for 26 from 3 point land (46.2%). The Cardinals were 1 for 18 (5.6%). That's a 33 point difference!!! I didn't think they could have a worse night from long range than they did in the St. Lawrence game, when they were 2x25 (8%) but they found a way. I hope those 2 games become the exception and not the rule.

The Knights placed 4 players in double figures led by Justin Ringen's 21 points (7x14 fg, 5x9 3's, 2x2 ft). He also had a game high 6 assists, with several coming from the high post to find a wide open teammate with no look passes. He added 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

John Decker had 16 points (4x10 fg, 2x4 3's, 6x6ft). He grabbed 3 boards, dished out 3 assists and had 1 steal.

Jack Eisenberg had a career high 16 points (6x10 fg, 2x4 3's, 2x2 ft), a team high 6 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.

Northern New York product, sophomore Jack Manke, (Ogdensburg Free Academy) had 10 points (5x7 fg) 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, and a steal.

Kevin Crockett had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Tommy Eastman had 8 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist in 20 minutes off the bench, while Jordi Menkhorst added 4 points, 4 boards, an assist and a block in 17 minutes off the bench.

The Cardinals were led by Eric Mack with 15 points (6x13 fg, 0x2 3's, 3x3 ft). He had 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks and 1 assist in 24 minutes of court time off the bench.

Ian Howard had the game's only double-double with 11 points (5x8 fg, 1x2 ft) and 10 rebounds. He added 2 steals and a block.

Jon Patron scored 8 points and had a game high 14 rebounds. He had 3 assists and a block.

Zack Coleman and Chris Middleton both had 9 points and 2 rebounds.

Brandon Johnson filled up the stat sheet with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals in 22 minutes off the bench.

Eli Bryant also had 8 points, with 4 assists 1 steal and 1 rebound.

Isaiah Hill contributed 3 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 assist in 12 minutes of court time.

The Knights shot      30x61 49.2% fg   12x26 46.2% 3's   14x18 77.8% ft
Plattsburgh shot       29x76 38.2% fg   1x18 5.6% 3's           12x17 70.6% ft

The Cardinals had the big edge in rebounding as mentioned 49-32 but lost the ball 17 times to 12 for the visitors.

Geneseo improves to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the YAC. They travel over to Potsdam to face the Bears this afternoon at 2:00 PM.

Plattsburgh falls to 6-2 overall and is also 2-1 in the conference. The Cardinals will host first place Brockport State this afternoon at 2 PM and will look to create the possibility of a 6 way tie for first place in the conference.

The craziness has already begun in the SUNYAC
It's anybody's conference right now.

Well said. Heck, if the Cards beat Brockport tonight then there will be no undefeated teams in the Yac with less than a quarter of the conference season completed!  First place could possibly have 4 losses, minimum, by playoff time!

Dec. 10  All 10 teams in action today in the YAC

There are some interesting possibilities because of the records and the way the teams match up. It's possible (and not that big a stretch) that there could be a 6 way tie for 1st place at the end of the afternoon with all 6 teams having a 3-1 record. First and foremost, Plattsburgh needs to beat conference leader Brockport, for that to have any chance of happening. A Golden Eagle win assures them of sole possession of first place. So then, if the Cardinals do their part and if Oswego beats Buffalo State, Cortland beats Fredonia, Oneonta beats New Paltz, and Geneseo defeats Potsdam all six teams would end the day with 3-1 records. With the selections my crystal ball will be predicting I think there will be 5 teams tied for 1st place at the end of the day. (So I just gave away who I think will win the Brockport-Plattsburgh game but I don't think I surprised anyone. ???)

Pressed for time just some quick picks today. I hate these 2 o'clock games and 5:30 games.

Buffalo State 1-2  5-2 at  Oswego State 2-1  6-3        2:00 PM

Bengals don't want or need a lost weekend. A loss here could be devastating. The Lakers have been playing just well enough to win. but i think their luck runs out here. The Lakers are favored by a single point. Teams have split the past few years, each winning at home. I'm taking the Bengals to mix things up and win on the road by a 79-75 final score.

Oneonta State 2-1  3-4  at  New Paltz State  0-3  1-7     2:00 PM

These Red Dragons will defeat their travel partners by the established point spread which is 11 points. Oneonta 80 New Paltz 69

Geneseo State  2-1  5-3  at  Potsdam State  0-3  1-6        2:00 PM

The Knights look to go 2-0 on their trip north. Oddsmakers have them as a 12 point favorite. That's not enough. Decker and Ringen both light it up today for the first time all year. Geneseo 88 Potsdam 70.

Fredonia State 1-2  3-5  at  Cortland State 2-1  5-2        2:00 PM

Blue Devils played Oswego tough and could cause problems here. Notice I said could. Oddsmakers have them as 10 point dogs. Cortland should win by 14. Unless Mr Hyde shows up. Red Dragons  win 78-64.

Featured Game of the Week

Brockport State 3-0  7-1  at  Plattsburgh State 2-1  6-2        2:00 PM

Always a battle when these two teams get together and usually a barnburner as well. No reason to think today's game will be any different. Home court means nothing as each team has win on the other team floor numerous time in the past decade and did so last year. The oddsmakers had Plattsbugh as a 6 point favorite yesterday but overnight the line has dropped to 4 points based on Friday's results. I'm going with the Cardinals but know that anything can happen in this one. Plattsburgh 86 Brockport 83.

Henry layup at 0:16 had lifted Bengals to 70-68 lead. Lakers up 35-25 with 2:37 left in the opening half. Buffs strike for 10 unanswered points -- five from Z. Ciezki, for 35-35 knot at half. Bengal momentum continues for 47-43 lead with 14:24 showing. Oswego regains balance and K. Tyson trey holds 55-50 control at 9:01. Matters tighten. Sortino jumper gives Lakers 67-66 edge at 3:00. Bengal J. Spence responds at 1:11. OSt's M. Krecko FT ties it at 68 at 0:47 to set up final drama.

Geneseo 88, Potsdam 78 with host Bears hanging tough. Down just 62-59 with 9:48 to play. Knights then get a bit of comfort. J. Days like today make me want to just cry!  And cry, not for me, but for the heart that these BENGALS have to fight to the bitter end and come up empty in such a heart wrenching way! No other way to describe the feeling after watching my BENGALS fight back vs Oswego and have a chance to win with 2 free throws with less than a second on the clock! On any day I'll take Mike Henry at the line with 2 free throws to win it it. Any day. Today it just wasn't to be! I still love the kid!

Give Oswego credit!  Sortino comes up with the dagger ( 3 pointer with less tha 11 seconds left ) and the Lakers win by 1. The BENGALS 7 missed free throws for the game and a couple of missed lay ups too all add up when you lose by 1 point!

Here's to hoping that the boys get this game behind them quickly,  get ready for thier exams, and then enjoy some Florida sun next weekend for thier next 2 games in Miami. Heck I could use some Florida sun myself after seeing all the snow in cortland and Oswego! Hmmmm let me check on those southwest flights to ft lauderdale while I'm thinking about this sun! I could use some sun myself. Maybe even run into jdex!!! ;)

Go BENGALS!

All-time.  On behalf of my BENGALS, we really appreciate your belief in us.  Here's to hoping that sooner than later you will be rewarded for that belief.  Been a rough start in a tough conference however we all knew that the SUNYAC was a tough conference.  No excuses for our record and I wouldn't disrespect these boards with any. Fact is is that we've been bested by Plattsburgh, Cortland and Oswego in 3 of our first 4 conference games.  We've got 3 weeks to get ready for a return visit to Potsdam ( who have been playing better) and Plattsburgh and then we have Brockport twice in 5 days! By Jan 14th we will know what we are truly made of! Contenders or pretenders?!?!

I'm betting that we will be contenders!  I truly believe that we will be contenders!  Have faith!

I too truly love the SUNYAC!  There is no better conference in the east ( Massey agrees) and the Yac helps prepare you for NCAA play! I believe that my boys will be in the fight come late February!

P.s. I got my plane ticket for Florida ( Jdex where are you???)

Go BENGALS!!!!!!

Bengalsrule,
We are only 4 games into the season, there is plenty of time for you guys to get it together.
A little Florida sun this time of year can do wonders.
Safe Travels and enjoy the warm sunny weather   8-)

My Oneonta Red Dragons are the real deal this season.
Coach Conover has them playing well. It doesn't hurt to have McElroy, Coleman, Kolosky and Kelly to lead the charge.

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy Prosperous New Year.

My man.  Appreciate that. And you are right. Cam is doing what many of us, around the Yac, expected. He has turned Oneonta into a winner!  Can't help but be happy for the guy!  Hoping the best for him ( except on Jan 20th and February 3rd ;D). His game in early jan vs Williams can be a major lift to the SUNYAC!  A victory by them, and Plattsburgh ( vs Trinity and Middlebury), could very well be the Yacs last chance at improving the conferences multi NCAA bid opportunities!

Last, but not least, here's to wishing you and the family the happiest of holidays and a prosperous 2017!

You've got a couple of Yac teams in Florida this month!  Maybe you can go cheer on the aforementioned Oneonta Red Dragons in Daytona Beach (Dec 28-29th)! Temp here is dropping to zero Thursday!  Hard to imagine wearing Bermuda shorts 48 hrs later!

Must be nice to have that option year around! I envy you!!  Enjoy!!!

SUNYAC Player of the Week is no surprise as John Decker continues to have one big game after another. This was his 2nd POTW this season as he won the honor 2 weeks ago. Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - John Decker, Geneseo
(Sr., G - Lincolndale, N.Y.)
Decker averaged 27.7 points and shot 56.7% from 3-point range in a three-game week for the Knights that included a pair of SUNYAC road wins. He started by tying a 10-year old school record by hitting nine three-pointers en route to 38 points in an 82-80 setback at No. 11 Rochester on Tuesday. He then followed up a 16-point effort in a 86-71 victory at Plattsburgh on Friday with a 29-point, six-assist showing in a 88-78 win at Potsdam on Saturday. Decker currently ranks third nationally with 30.1 points per game and second with 5.14 three-pointers made per game.

The D3hoops Top 25 Week #3 poll has been released.

Rochester is the only East Region team in the Top 25 as they move up 4 spots from #11 to #7. Their point total increased from 358 to 456. They remain undefeated at 10-0 as they beat Union College Monday night by a 77-58 final score. Geneseo almost bumped them off last Tuesday losing in the Palestra 82-80.

Brockport is the only other East Region team getting any points as they received 17 points that would put them in the #39 spot. They increased their total from 11 points they got last week.

Here's a link to the complete Top 25: http://www.d3hoops.com/top25/men/2016-17/week3

Magic... play detective if necessary... why was Mount St Mary at New Paltz postponed?  It was scheduled for today, was actually postponed yesterday... neither schools' site offers an explanation...
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

Best guess for the New Paltz situation is ... mumps. An outbreak began with the swim team back in October. And according to this story, students aren't interested in free vaccinations:
