Quality win today for my beloved BENGALS. Especially after starting out in a double digit hole! Alvernia on tap for tomorrow (actually later on today).  Would have posted earlier but this 84 degree weather is hard to ignore just so I can go inside and post ( ergo the 2:28 a m post)!!

Go BENGALS!!!

Monday Dec. 19  Just a single game involving a SUNYAC team today.

Buffalo State vs Alvernia        4:00 PM   Miami Shootout @ Miami, Fla.

The Bengals try and make it two for two in sunny Florida. I hope that the coaches didn't allow those young fellows to party too much after their victory yesterday over Eastern Connecticut.

Alvernia is from the MACC conference and last year they were the regular season champs. This year they are 5-3 and their 3 losses are by a total of 9 points. They are a solid team and should give the Bengals a battle. They have 4 players averaging double figures and in their last game they gave up a 3 point lead to Lycoming and then turned the ball over when they had a chance to win it with the last possession.

The oddsmakers have made the Bengals a slim 1 point favorite in this one. I'm taking the Bengals to keep their road record in holiday tournaments alive. Buffalo State 83 Alvernia 77.

It is truly sweet out here buddy. Wife and I waked out in the beach an hour ago to a clear sky and 84 degrees! ;D ;D ;D. Don't know if I could do this 12 months out of the year, but with retirement around the corner I could see 4/6 months out of the year. Helluva tournament.  Over 10 teams ( at last count), with Goucher and Gwenned mercy arriving today!

Magicman should be glad to know that the boys "allegedly " were in thier rooms by midnight..."allegedly "!!!! ;). Hopefully Alvernia, who arrived yesterday,  partied all night!

Couldn't watch the game and live stats were switched to the next game. No boxscore showing anywhere but I ran the replay of the game and went to the end of it and could tell that Buffalo State won. Will fill in the blanks later.

Buffalo State 72  Alvernia 65  Final score

I'm pretty sure the Buffalo State players were out past curfew last night. A friend of mine said they were still partying after 1:00 AM. How else can you explain a measly 72 points, 11 points below their average. I predicted they would get that average of 83 points against an Alvernia team that just gave up 85 points to Lycoming. My score was 83-77. Had the MOV close at least.

No game tomorrow so tonight the Bengals can party like it's 1999. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKgCNT614ZU

The Bengals jumped out to an 8-0 lead but it was the Crusaders that were on the front end of a 19-13 score halfway through the first period. They put together a 19-5 run that carried them to a 6 point advantage and they hung onto the lead through the next 9 minutes. Buff State finally caught them with a minute left in the half, on a Jordan Rey jumper and when Alvernia missed on their final possession the Bengals scored inside on a J.O. Mair layup for a 36-34 halftime lead.  The Crusaders got a big first half from guard George Williams, who scored more than half of Alvernia's total as he burned the Bengals for 19 points. Dom Grayer with 9 points and Lovell Smith with 8 led Buffalo State.

The 2nd half was also closely contested but it was the Bengals that had the lead for most of the period. They were up by 5 points a minute into the half but Alvernia scored 5 straight points to knot it up at 41. Two free throws from Mike Henry and a dunk from Jordan Chateau put the Bengals up by 4 but the Crusaders got a jumper and a 3 pointer to gain the lead for the first time in the period at 46-45 with 14:42 left to play. The teams were tied at 48 each when the Bengals outscored the Crusaders by a 14-6 margin over the next 7 minutes to open up the largest lead of the game at 62-54. Six straight points from the Crusaders' top scorer, Marquis Marshall brought them within 2 at 62-60, but Jordan Glover knocked down a 3 pointer with 2:57 on the clock to make it a 2 possession game once more. The Crusaders got it down to a 66-63 deficit on a 3 point play by Marshall but Glover swished 2 from the stripe to give the Bengals some breathing room. Then Glover stole the ball and got it ahead to Henry for a layup that sealed the win for the Bengals. A couple of free throws were tacked on to make the final margin of 7 points.

Buffalo State had 4 players in double figures led by Lovell Smith with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. He added 2 blocks, 1 assist and a steal.

Mike Henry also had a double-double with 11 points and a game high 11 rebounds. He had 2 assists a steal and a block.

Jordan Glover had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

Dom Grayer had 11 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist off the bench in 22 minutes of floor time.

J.O. Spence had 7 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and a block with 15 minutes off the bench.

Alvernia got 25 points from George Williams who was the game's high scorer. He also had a game high 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

Marquis Marshall had 21 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals.

Mike Miller had 13 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Bengals improve to 7-3 overall (1-3 in the YAC). They won't play again until they make their annual trek to the North Country to take on Potsdam State on January 6th at 5:30 PM followed by a Saturday afternoon game against Plattsburgh State at 2:00 PM.

Alvernia drops to 5-4 and has a game tomorrow in Miami against Goucher College.

Just call me thankful. Sitting here in the airport in ft lauderdale.  Same flight as BENGALS! I hope these young men realize the expense that coach Ansari put out for them to fly to ft lauderdale, stay at a 5 star hotel ( Miami Loews hotel) and eat 3 times a day. I know that the Plattsburgh team did the same trip last year so I'm sure Magicman can appreciate what goes into putting a holiday trip like this together!

I ran into team last night at Finnegans Way restaurant on Ocean Blvd!  Quite a site seeing these young men with thier coaches while they enjoyed a team meal and the Panthers v Redskins football game!   Most had never been to Miami let alone a beach. At least 1 admitted that it was his first plane ride! This had to be quite the experience for these kids!  I know this is div 3 hoops but trust me when I tell you that theses boys had a D1 experience!

Note: Got an email from the uSUNYAC office last week saying why there was no team of the week. Water main broke in thier hq. They will be back with thier Xmas team of the week, next week, so stay tuned!

Go BENGALS!

I discovered a new d3hoops site today, courtesy of a write up by Eastern Conn.  It is actually a rather informative site. You may notice that this site has SUNYAC ranked as the 7th best D3 conference.

http://herosports.com/colleges/sports/d3-mens-basketball?utm_source=HERO+Master&utm_campaign=434bf30c9b-D3+MBB+Headlines+12%2F21&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_25ee8a514c-434bf30c9b-76339477

Mainsite is http://herosports.com/

When you click on to d3 rankings, their system has so much more detail at your fingertips i.e, results of, at least, your last 7 games with score and opponents. Updates rankings daily (I think)

Justin Cooper with his double-double in a win against St. John Fisher last week was chosen as the SUNYAC Player of the Week. Here's the write-up from the YAC website:

Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Justin Cooper, Cortland (So, G - Pine Plains, N.Y.)

Cooper scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half as Cortland won at St. John Fisher, 79-69. He finished the game with 20 points, 12 rebounds and five assists and recorded his fifth double-double of the season.

Congratulations to Justin.

The new D3hoops Top 25 Poll came out on the 19th and the only team in the East Region in the top 25 was Rochester who moved up 1 spot to #6. The Yellowjackets received 474 points in this week's poll, an increase of 18 points over the last poll.

Brockport State is the next highest ranked team as they received 20 points in the Others Receiving Votes category. That would put them in the 33rd spot. They had 17 points in the previous poll but didn't see any action this past week and are off until the 2nd of January. They won't see much movement in that placement for a few weeks.

No other East team received any votes in the poll.

Updated Massey Rankings of the Top East Region teams:

#13   Rochester
#39   Brockport State
#70   Plattsburgh State
#72   St Lawrence
#74   Hobart
#75   Buffalo State   Up 57 spots off their 2 wins in Florida over the weekend.(which helped the YAC teams
that have a win over the Bengals like Cortland and Plattsburgh.)
#81   Cortland State   Up 29 spots off their win over St. John Fisher
#85   Skidmore
#86   Geneseo State
#90   Hartwick
#92   St. John Fisher
#95   Oswego State
#120 RIT
#122 Stevens Tech
#125 Oneonta
#131 Union
#134 Nazareth
#182 Clarkson
#!91 NYU

I only went this far to see where NYU was ranked. Seem like every year they play a cupcake schedule of non-conference opponents and are usually 9-0 or 10-0 and ranked in the Top 25. Then they get into conference play and usually get beat up and fall out of contention. This year they are 7-2 and have lost handily to the 2 teams that have decent records, Yeshiva and Purchase. Must be a down year for the Violets.

Interesting, that like the past several years, the SUNYAC has 5 of the top 9 teams and 7 of the top 15 in the  East Region.

Our top 6 teams have a combined record of 41-15 overall but 8 of those losses have come against each other. The out of conference record for those 6 teams is 24-7 which compares favorably against the non-conference schedule of most any other conference in the country.

Another sad story coming out of Geneseo where the Women's Basketball team suffered the loss of a young lady, who was a freshman on the team, in a car accident. This is the second year in a row tragedy has struck the Women's team. Here's a link to the newspaper article:

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2016/12/21/suny-geneseo-womens-basketball-player-dies-crash/95695042/

Another student athlete from Lancaster Bible College lost her life in a car accident a day earlier. Here's a link to the D3hoops story about both accidents:

http://www.d3hoops.com/notables/2016/12/tragedy-geneseo-lbc

Our condolences and prayers to the families of these young ladies. It's especially hard coming during a season  that is supposed to be filled with joy and celebration. These families will have a tough time making it through the approaching holidays. Please say a prayer for them and their daughters who were taken from them far too early.
