Massachusetts has been doing free tuition at state schools for students in the top 10 or 15% (I forget which) of public school classes for a while.  I think it's upped the caliber of student they're able to attract, but I'm not sure it's had a huge impact on athletics.  SUNY and CUNY schools are already about the cheapest in-state options in the country, so I'm not sure where the pool of students would come from to change recruiting all that much - unless some kids are currently choosing community college over a state school, but I doubt that's very many.

Confirms why I've been losing some NY prospects recently to SUNY schools. :(

My column today will touch on some of this.  The SUNY coaches I've talked to point to the rise of Honors Colleges within the state school system as a big reason they can compete with the privates - there is not a lot of academic difference unless you're really talking high level elite competition.

As a former New Yorker who still has close ties to SUNY, don't bet the ranch on it.

In other words ........never happen!!!!

Tuition assistance for low to medium income students has been available for years

i wouldn't bet against  Governor Cuomo (I actually hate talking politics on these boards however) pulling this off. He's up for re-election in 2018 and if he is proposing something like this with this much fan fare, then you better believe that he has his duck(s) (assembly and Senate leaders) lined up!  Just saying (no more politics for me here)!  As a single father of 5 (thier mother passed away from cancer 12 years ago) and putting all 5 through college, anything that can help a family get their kid9s) through college, I'm ALL for!  ALL FOR. Damn the sports ramifications!!  Financial aid, as it is right now ( at least at Buffalo State and University of Buffalo) is a ..... (nevermind) >:(

The Law Firm

Couldn't agree more! Financial aid is a #$%^& and often is unjust, hope the Governor can pull this off. In terms of hoops, its been a while since my last appearance and it may have to stay that way with Buffalo States latest victories in Florida! I would hate to jinx them! They get a chance at some revenge this weekend against a Plattsburgh team who always seems to have a little homecookin' (opps did I say that out loud? ^.^). Would be a major win and some momentum going into the major stretch of the season. Anybody familiar with Plattsburghs live stream system? Happy new years to you gentlemen, be good and GO BENGALS.

Peace

The Division III basketball season is back from the holiday "break" - though not much of a break for many of the teams - and with the start of the 2017 part of the schedule comes plenty to talk about. Upsets in the men's Top 25 and the shocking news at out UW-Stevens Point.

Thursday night on Hoopsville, Dave McHugh tries to get everything wrapped up in the discarded Christmas wrapping left behind. Well color me shocked.  Went up to Plattsburgh last night to cheer on my boys during their 2 game stint in the north country this weekend. Low and behold, when I woke up this morning I learned that the weather here in Plattsburgh is CONSIDERABLY BETTER than the weather in Buffalo!

Not sure if that's good or bad omen but.........!

All-Time

If John Patron is still out, it's a Good Omen for the Bengals regardless of the weather.
;)

All-Time

Started the New Year 0-3.
It's time to get serious with my picks.
Pretty easy picks tonight in the SUNYAC.
There will be a lot of rust to dust off for a few teams tonight as they haven't played in almost a month.
That can't be good

Buffalo State all over Potsdam
Cortland all over New Paltz
Magicman's Cardinals all over Fredonia
Brockport at home over St Lawrence
And my Oneonta Red Dragons all over Oswego

Enjoy the games

Jan. 6      Nine of the ten teams are in action today with 4 conference matchups and a big non-conference game between Brockport and St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence  at  Brockport        5:00 PM   Co-Featured Game of the Day

The leader of the SUNYAC versus the leader of the Liberty League. The winner will get a boost in the Regional Rankings when they come out next month. And if the winner continues to do well will probably be ranked in 2nd place behind Rochester and possibly the top spot if the Yellowjackets falter. The Golden Eagles are coming off their worst spanking all year. The rust was evident against a Carnegie Mellon team that played above their heads, shot much better than Brockport and crashed the boards twice as good as the Eagles. St. Lawrence is coming off a double overtime win against North Country rival, Clarkson. The Larries are 8-1 and are currently 2-0 in the YAC with wins over Plattsburgh and Potsdam. The oddsmakers have made Brockport a slim 2 point favorite. I'm still not sold on St. Lawrence and Brockport can't possibly play as bad as they did this past Monday. Brockport 85 SLU 78.

New Paltz State  at  Cortland State        5:30 PM

The Hawks have 1 win and have lost 5 of their 8 games by double digits. Yet their single win was against Springfield College on the road. Springfield has a 7-5 record and they own a win over Amherst who was ranked #1 in the D3hoops Top 25 and undefeated at the time. They have also beaten WPI who was ranked in the Top 25. So if the Hawks can beat the team, that beat the top ranked team in the country among others, it means you can't take them lightly regardless of their record. The Red Dragons have already beaten the Hawks in an earlier matchup that occurred just a month ago. Cortland only won that game by a 77-68 score but they had a 19 point lead at one point. The oddsmakers did their homework and they favor the Red Dragons by 20 points in today's contest. Cortland struggles to put teams away that aren't up to their level and their recent overtime win against Widener and loss the next day to Johns Hopkins are perfect examples of that. Yet they stomped Ithaca by nearly 40 points and beat Buff State by double digits. Hard to figure what the Red Dragons are going to do. Today, at home, I think they come out firing and take down the Hawks in a big way. Cortland wins this one 94-64.

Buffalo State  at  Potsdam State        5:30 PM

Not much to expect here except a double digit victory by the Bengals. The Bengals bring a 7-3 overall record into this game and are coming off an 18 day vacation after winning a pair of decent games in Florida. Potsdam is still looking for their 2nd win of the season and unfortunately won't find it here. The oddsmakers have made Buffalo State a 17 point favorite and the Bears will be hard pressed to keep it that close. Buffalo State 90 Potsdam 70

Oneonta State  at  Oswego State        5:30 PM  Co-Featured Game of the Day

Oswego will be looking for revenge after dropping an earlier contest in Oneonta exactly 1 month ago. The Lakers did the same thing last year losing in Oneonta by 38 points and then winning in Oswego by an 80-72 margin. Oneonta is coming off 2 nice wins in Florida and hung with #25  Williams College on Tuesday night before eventually coming out on the short end of a 74-62 final score. Oswego hasn't played in almost a month and this same scenario unfolded last year when Oneonta played in a holiday tournament in Puerto Rico and came back to beat Oneonta by that 90-52 score. Oswego was off for over three weeks heading into that game. Could history repeat itself here? Will the Lakers be rusty again? The oddsmakers have made Oswego a slim 2 point favorite and I think the Lakers will also win a close game. In the past eleven years Oswego has struggled against the Red Dragons in Oneonta, but at home they have only lost to the Red Dragons once during that span. I think that is more than likely the history that will repeat. Oswego 76 Oneonta 71.

Fredonia State  at  Plattsburgh State        5:30 PM

Plattsburgh State returned to action on Tuesday night against Trinity College. To say the Cardinals were rusty is an understatement. They had more rust than the Tin Man did when Dorothy first ran into him. Hopefully tonight they will be a well oiled machine. The Cardinals have to put something together, because a three game losing streak has seriously put a dent into their aspirations of making the NCAA tournament, once again this year. With so many quality teams in the YAC and only 6 spots available in the conference tournament, every game from this point forward will have huge implications. Fredonia is looking to spoil someone's plans and grab one of those 6 spots as theirs. A win tonight and tomorrow at Potsdam will put them in a playoff position.  The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh a 12 point favorite in this one, which seems odd since the Cardinals won by 18 at Fredonia. If Plattburgh isn't at full strength that margin may be correct. Plattsburgh still wins this game, regardless of who is on the floor for them tonight. Plattsburgh State  81 Fredonia 66.

Brockport State 79 St Lawrence 73

I had the Golden Eagles winning this important inter-league contest by an 85-78 final score. The margin of victory was only off by a single point.

The Golden Eagles were up by 16 at the break and reached a game high lead of 21 early in the 2nd half. They led by double figures throughout most of the 2nd period, until the Saints, down by 12 at 72-60 got back to back 3 pointers and cut the lead to 5 points. Another 3 pointer with 1:22 left in the game cut the margin to 3 points at 74-71, but Brockport hit 5 of 6 from the line in the final seconds to put the Saints away.

Hamed Shamseldin led the Eagles with 21 points off the bench. Devonn Gavin added 17 points, Jon Carnegie had 12 and Cordell Torres dropped in 10.
Justin Summers had a game high 7 rebounds. Marcus Blythers and Carnegie both had 6 boards. Matt Smith added 6 points and 7 assists.

The Larries got 19 points from Riley Naclerio. They got 14 points, 5 assists and a game high 7 rebounds from Kyle Edwards. Kyle Kobis and Ben Crawford both tossed in 11 points.

Brockport was able to pull off this win without the services of leading scorer, Clifton Lyerly. Had he played I'm confident the team would have scored the 85 points I said they would. He averages

Coach Dunn utilized a different starting lineup than his normal one and because of this, his bench scored 53 of the 79 points the team put on the scoreboard. Maybe he should  try that same strategy tomorrow against Geneseo.

Brockport improves to 9-2 and will hit the road to play their travel partner tomorrow at 2:00 PM in Geneseo.

Fredonia State 86  Plattsburgh State 83

Fredonia pulls off the SUNYAC's biggest upset of the year so far as they defeat Plattsburgh on the road by a 86-83 final score. The Blue Devils played the best game I've seen them play in a number of years. Each time the Cardinals would gain the lead Fredonia would fight back to reclaim the advantage. The teams traded leads 13 times and had 7 ties with many of them occurring in the final few minutes of play. The game changer occurred after Ian Helps scored on a layup to give the Blue Devils an 84-83 edge with 1:19 remaining. Plattsburgh came up empty on their possession, missing a 3 point attempt and Helps grabbed the defensive rebound with a minute to go. Fredonia threw the ball away with 33 seconds to play giving the Cards another opportunity to make the game winner. Plattsburgh took a time out and dribbled the clock down and went inside to Jon Patron. He was immediately double teamed as the Blue Devils seemed to be anticipating that he would end up with the ball. (Especially since the last two baskets scored by Plattsburgh were getting the ball inside to Patron who would then maneuver his way to the hoop for a layup.)  Patron lost control of the ball as the Blue Devils swarmed around him and Fredonia recovered with 7 seconds on the clock. Plattsburgh fouled Keith Ruiz with 7 seconds left and he made both free throws to give them a 3 point lead. Plattsburgh hurried the ball down the floor and threw up a 3 pointer that was off target. The ball went out of bounds off Fredonia and the buzzer sounded. The refs had blown the whistle before the buzzer went off so 4 tenths of a second was put back on the clock. The Cards had time to inbound a catch and shoot, 3 point attempt, from the corner that didn't go down.

Fredonia was led by 18 points from Kareem Brown.

Nicc Jonson had 15 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Ian Helps had 13 points and a team high 7 rebounds.

Brandon Hodge also had 13 points and 2 assists.

Richard De La Cruz had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Plattsburgh got a game high 21 points from Eli Bryant. He made 5 three pointers to lead the way for the Cardinals.

Jon Patron had 17 points, 7 rebounds and a team high 4 assists.

Nick DeAngelis had 12 points and he got Plattsburgh back in contention when they were 9 points down, by making 4 three pointers, in a 3 and a half minute stretch. The freshman was the main reason that the Cardinals went from a 64-55 deficit with 12 minutes to go to a lead of 71-67 with 8:30 to go.

Eric Mack had 9 points and 4 rebounds.

Chris Middleton had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.

Fredonia improves to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the SUNYAC. They will travel over to Potsdam to face the Bears at 2:00 PM tomorrow.

Plattsburgh drops to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the SUNYAC. They will host Buffalo State tomorrow at 2:00 PM

Buffalo State  91  Potsdam State 62

I had the Bengals winning this one 90-70 so I was pretty close with the Buff State part. The Bears were down 50-28 at the break allowing the Bengals to cruise home a winner. Potsdam did close the gap to 12 points midway through the second period, but the Bengals hit the afterburner and took off once more with a 20-6 burst that gave them a 77-51 margin with 5:26 to go.

Jordan Glover led the Bengals with 22 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds and 4 steals

Lovell Smith had 17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 1 assist.

Dom Grayer had 15 points and 3 rebounds.

Nico McLean came off the bench and scored 13 points, with 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.

Mike Henry had 8 rebounds, 7 points, 6 steals and 3 assists.

Potsdam got a double-double from Nosa Onabor with 18 points and a game high 11 rebounds.

Jayquan Thomas added 15 points.

Serigne Kane had 8 points and 5 rebounds.

Danny Delsol-Lowry  had 7 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal.

Kristoff Saunders had 5 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a block.

Buffalo State improves to 8-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference. They will travel to Plattsburgh to face the Cardinals at 2:00 PM tomorrow.

Potsdam falls to 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the YAC. They will host Fredonia at 2:00 PM tomorrow.

Oswego State 87  Oneonta State 78

Correctly called the Oswego State win in this game but only had the score as 76-71.

This game was much closer than the final score indicates.

Oswego grabbed the early lead at 12-4 and built it to a 17-9 advantage which was the largest lead of the first half. Oneonta managed to narrow the gap to 3 points at the break and were down by a 40-37 score.

The Red Dragons would stay within striking distance but could never get the equalizer the entire 2nd half. Four times they got the lead down to a single possession early in the final period, but then Oswego State, ahead 44-41 with 18:40 left in the half, used a 13-2 run to open up a 14 point lead at 57-43 with 15:25 to go. It was the largest lead of the game but the Lakers couldn't maintain it, as Oneonta came back with a 15-5 run of their own, to cut the lead to 4 points, at 62-58, with 10 minutes to play. With 4 minutes to go a Mikey McElroy basket brought the Red Dragons to 74-72 and with 2 minutes left he made 1 of 2 from the line to cut it to a single point, at 79-78. The Lakers' Mykelle Krecko scored inside, and when Oneonta came up empty on their possession, Brian Sortino knocked down a pair of free throws, to up the Laker lead to 5 points with a minute left. Once again the Red Dragons misfired and had to foul with time running out. Sortino made them pay with another 2 points from the line. Another miss and 2 more foul shots for Sortino would round out the scoring.

The Lakers were led by 20 points each from Brian Sortino and Keith Tyson. Sortino added 5 assists, 4 rebounds and a steal. Tyson had 3 rebounds a steal and a block.

Mykelle Krecko had a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds. He also had 4 blocks.

Ian Schupp also scored 14 point with 3 boards and 1 assist.

Oneonta's Mikey McElroy captured scoring honors with 22 points and had 3 rebounds.

Lawrence Coleman had 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Frankie Kelly had 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Oswego improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the YAC. They will host New Paltz on Saturday at 2:00 PM.

Oneonta falls to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play. They will be at Cortland on Saturday for a 2:00 start.

#8038
Cortland State 91  New Paltz State 76

I had Cortland winning by a 94-64 final. Fairly accurate on the Cortland total but the Hawks were closer than I thought they would be.

New Paltz actually had the lead for the first 12 minutes of this game and the Hawks were only down 4 points with 7:30 left to play. New Paltz led for a large portion of the first half, by as much as 7 points and the Red Dragons finally caught them at 30-30 with 9:26 to play. The teams were still tied at 39-39 with 5 minutes to go when the Red Dragons began to assert themselves and ripped off an 11-0 run to go up 50-39. The Hawks' Nick Paquette hit a 3 pointer to send the team into the break with Cortland up 50-42.

The lead hovered around 8 to 12 points for most of the 2nd period but the Hawks did manage to get within 4 points with 7:32 left to play. Ten seconds later though, Justin Cooper, who didn't miss a shot the entire game, nailed another 3 pointer, followed by a Carrell Joseph 3 pointer and the lead was back to double digits. The Red Dragons would lengthen it to a game high of 16 points to close out the Hawks.

Justin Cooper captured scoring honors with 27 points as he was Mister Perfection going 10x10 from the field, 2x2 from long range and 5x5 from the charity stripe. Hitting all 15 shots should qualify you for some kind of special award from the NCAA. Something like they give bowlers when they shoot a perfect game. A ring...a belt buckle...something to signify the occasion. Justin just missed a double double as he also was the leading rebounder in the game with 9 boards. He also added 4 assists, 3 steals and a block. Certainly a contender for Player of the Week honors.

James Morales wasn't perfect but he was pretty darn good with 26 points on 9x14 shooting from the field. He was 3x7 from long range and 5x6 from the line. He also had 4 rebounds and a game high 6 assists.

Nicky Bonura had 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench.

Carrell Joseph had 9 points , 2 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block.

Michael Kelly had 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Nick Paquette and Andrew Seniuk both had 17 points and 5 rebounds to lead New Paltz. Seniuk added 4 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals while Paquette had a pair of assists.

Corey Garcia had 12 points,  a game high 6 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

Dyan Balducci had 12 points 4 rebounds, and 1 assist.

James Saunders had 10 points in 16 minutes off the bench.

Malik Seelal had 6 points 3 rebounds and 3 assists in 17 minutes on the court.

Cortland improves to 9-3  overall and 4-1 in the conference. They will host Oneonta on Saturday at 2:00 PM .

New Paltz drops to 1-9 overall and 0-5 in the YAC. They travel to Oswego for a 2:00 PM start on Saturday against the Lakers.
