My Beloved BENGALS win.
Today it was at least 10 degrees warmer in Plattsburgh than Buffalo.
Lovell Smith scores his 1,000th point in a Buffalo State uniform.
And there were some good wings at Buffalo Wild Wings tonight to finish off the night!

Biggest game of 2017 in 12 hours!

Go BENGALS!

Jan. 7  All ten teams in action with 5 conference games today.

Fredonia State  at  Potsdam State        2:00 PM

Potsdam State still looking for their first conference win under new coach Jim Bechtel.  Many times in the past few years Fredonia was the game they got that win. After watching the Blue Devils in action last night I don't think that will happen today. Oddsmakers have made the Blue Devils a 7 point favorite. I think they win by a few more. Fredonia 77 Potsdam 66.

Brockport State  at  Geneseo State        2:00 PM Featured Game of the Day

Any one of 4 teams could be in first place all alone at the end of today. This game will go a long way in determining that possibility. If Brockport wins they will still be the only undefeated team in the conference. If the Knights wins then a number of things have to happen for them to be in sole possession of the top spot. Prmarily, Cortland and Oswego would have to lose or Geneseo, even with a win, would remain a half game behind that pair.

Last year Brockport won in Geneseo and Geneseo won in Brockport. With each team returning the bulk of last year's lineups it means that home court doesn't hold much value. Both teams are coming off wins and Geneseo is well rested since they didn't play last night.

The oddsmakers have listed Geneseo as 5 point favorites in this game, possibly because Clifton Lyerly, the top scorer for the Golden Eagles didn't play last night against St. Lawrence. I'm pretty sure Lyerly will be in the lineup today. I'm having a hard time choosing a winner in this game but I'm going to go with the underdog Golden Eagles even though it's their 2nd game in two days and the Knights had yesterday off. Final score  Brockport 81 Geneseo 77.

Oneonta  State  at  Cortland State        2:00 PM

The annual battle of Red Dragons with round one taking place in Cortland. Round two is just 10 days down the road. The oddsmakers have made the home team a 5 point favorite in this game and I have no reason to think that's out of line. Cortland won both meetings last year. Oneonta won both meetings the year before that. This one should go right down to the wire. Cortland wins by an 85-82 final score

New Paltz State  at  Oswego State        2:00 PM

The Hawks still looking for a win in the YAC and it won't be tonight against the Lakers. They hung around against Cortland for quite a while yesterday, but hanging around and winning are two different things. They are 19 point underdogs here. I don't think they will lose by that much but they won't be much closer either. Oswego State wins by a 79- 65 final.

Buffalo State  at  Plattsburgh State        2:00 PM

These two teams are headed in opposite directions. The Bengals have won 3 in a row, after a lost weekend in Central New York, back in early December. The Cardinals after winning 3 in a row in early December, including a win over Liberty League leader, Skidmore, have now dropped 4 straight games. They haven't lost 4 games in a row since January of 2012, when they were in the midst of a major rebuilding year. Buffalo State, after falling behind in the conference race early on is trying to catch up to the rest of the leaders. The Cardinals beat the Bengals in Buffalo last month but I'm not sure they can do it again on their home court. The oddsmakers had Plattsburgh listed as a slight favorite several days ago. That changed overnight with the Cardinals loss to Fredonia. The Bengals are now a 2 point favorite. I think that Plattsburgh is in a funk and the  Bengals are not the team to be playing against when you're trying to break out of a funk. I think that Buffalo State wins this game by an 88-83 margin but I sure hope I'm wrong about this one. Go Cardinals!

5 games on tap today
The game of the day is Magicman's Cardinals vs The Buffalo State Bengals.
I think the Magicman needs to  bring his Magic Wand to Memorial hall today for this game.
I hope the Cardinals have a very short memory and move past getting upset last night by Fredonia.
Don't think they can do it as Buffalo State wins this one in a barn burner.

Fredonia coming off a huge upset of Plattsburgh last night continues there winning ways by beating Potsdam in a close one.

Oswego easily over New Paltz

Brockport coming off a good win against St. Lawrence should handle Geneseo today.

What Red Dragons team will win the rivalry match-up between Oneonta and Cortland. I'm picking the Oneonta Red Dragons in another close one.

Enjoy the games

The magicman brought his magic wand to Memorial Hall today. And his magic potion and cloak of invisibility. It didn't matter nothing worked. I even tried my reverse psychology trick and picked the Bengals to win instead of my Cardinals. Useless. I must have lost my mojo. I remember the Bengals lost their mojo few years ago and I had to help them find it. Now I need help locating mine.

Buffalo State 110 Plattsburgh State 93

This game was much closer than the final score indicates.

magicman

Oneonta State 95  Cortland State 86

The Red Dragons win the Battle of the Red Dragons. The Oneonta variety continues to pull off some big wins in the conference. This one in the lair of their rival at Corey Gym.

magicman

Fredonia State 70  Potsdam State 61

The last time Fredonia had a 3 game winning streak and won 2 conference games in a row was in January of 2012 when they beat Plattsburgh, Potsdam and Oneonta in consecutive games. The Blue Devils are definitely improving.

magicman

Oswego State 98  New Paltz State 69

The Lakers could smell first place, all by themselves, when they heard the other scores at halftime. They exploded for 57 second half points, to put to rest any Hawk hopes of a comeback, as the Hawks were only down by 9 at the break.

magicman

Geneseo State 86  Brockport State 66

The Knights did their part to tighten up the conference race by beating the Golden Eagles....handily I might add. Not everything fell their way to take over first place by their lonesome but I'm sure they are happy with today's outcome. They are a half game out of first and in 2nd all by themselves since they hold the tiebreaker over Brockport....for the time being.

Magicman speaks the truth!  Game was considerably closer than final score indicates!  This game was well worth the ride. As one who has been to memorial gymnasium and walked away disappointed 4 years in a row ( last BENGAL win at Plattsburgh was Feb 12 2012), this one was special !

Being down 55-49 at half and then down by double digits in the 2nd half, before winning by 17 makes this win special. 5 players in double figures adds even a little better taste to this ( and makes the 7/8 hour ride home more palatable).

Having an opportunity to sit and chat with the Magicman for the 4th, or 5th year, in a row makes this trip, like all others, worthwhile!

Bottom line when the smoke clears. It's a win. ;)  No more...no less,  unless you have the history in Plattsburgh that my BENGALS have.....then it may qualify as a "special" win, truly special  :D!  This win won't help us next week vs Brockport on Tuesday nor Geneseo next Friday. There are no bonus points given that we can add to the score board next Tuesday! Brockport, like Plattsburgh, have both been a major pain in the BENGAL ---!  Need to keep winning because 3 wins in SUNYAC don't qualify us for squat come post season. Oswego , Plattsburgh, Cortland and  Brockport have the most playoff appearances in the past 4 years, and there's nothing that I've seen from any of them that would indicate that they aren't prepared to go back to the dance this year!

Geneseo is the hottest team in Sunyac ( and just crushed Brockport tonight) and is currently sitting in 2nd place! Oneonta under Curle disciple, Cam Conover, has found their way and look better than any one can remember in recent memory ! Fredonia is on a 3 game win streak. Let me repeat, a 3 game win streak!  And in a conference where I predict that
A the regular season champ will have at least 3/4 conference losses and
B SUNYAC will get AT least 3 bids,
you can't count out either New Paltz nor Potsdam!

So the road ahead for my beloved BENGALS hasn't really gotten easier! It's just todays stop in this long journey, was sweet, real sweet :) !  Gonna enjoy this one for a few more hours because when I get home I know the wife is gonna be gripping with me about Sunday chores! :(

Proud of these boys

Go BENGALS !!

Back from a week loong vacation in the Virgin islands and Compton California its the

                                                                        uSUNYAC team of the week
This weeks team is

Brian Sortino  - Oswego - ( 2 games) averaged 20 ppg and 5.5 assist per game in 2 victories over New Paltz and Oneonta.

Lovell Smith - Buffalo State - (2) averaged 20.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 4 steals per game in 2 victories over Potsdam and Plattsburgh.

Lawrence Coleman - Oneonta (3) averaged 20 ppg and 9 rpg in a win vs Cortland and losses vs Williams college and Oswego.

John Decker - Geneseo (1) scored 23 points and had 5 assists in victory vs Brockport.

Jordan Glover - Buffalo State (2) averaged 19.5 ppg, 5 assists per game and 5 steals per game in 2 victories over Potsdam and Plattsburgh.

The Law Firm

After looking at the box score from the Bengals trip to Plattsburgh I noticed something...something I foreshadowed a few days ago...something about, home cookin' was it? Although the fouls were called pretty evenly (27 for Buffalo State 30 for Plattsburgh) that doesn't negate the fact that there were 57 foul calls in the game...Ill let that sink in...57! Happy to see the BENGALS get the win! Was also surprised to see the Magicmans Cards drop a home bout to Fredonia, which makes it 5 Losses in a row now? Ay Caramba what is going on in Cardinal land! Nonetheless, the Bengals improve with another quality win and prepare for a big week in the Yac'. The Magicmans cards had a lot of fun at the expense of the Bengals in the past, but not this time! I was fortunate enough to catch a game last year but had my heart broken when the Cards stuck a dagger into the heart of the BENGALS in Buffalo via a game winning shot. So this was revenge. Ok im done! BOY THE YAC JUST GOT INTERESTING. Be good.

Peace
LF

4 Games on tap today involving SUNYAC teams:

Can Fredonia continue their winning ways against a tough Geneseo team at home.
Fredonia's gym is a tough place to play in, but I think the Red Hot Knights will prevail.
Geneseo in a close one.

Can Brockport shake off getting smacked by Geneseo last weekend.
I think Buffalo State's win at Plattsburgh last weekend is the turning point of their season.
Buffalo State wins this one at Home in a barn burner.

Oswego continues their winning ways against St Lawrence. Oswego is coming together as they always do the 2nd half of the season.

Tough game to call, Stevenson 1-13 against New Paltz 1-10. I'm going with the Home team and picking New Paltz to win.
Go SUNYAC.

Enjoy the games
