Just a heads up on Cortland ....

RDragons without both C. Joseph and Z. Lydon. Virtal forces. Joseph went down in opening half of home date vs. Pburgh. Lydon exited Friday eve's contest at Bport with an ailment. Joseph's probably season-ending. As for Lydon ?????

Plattsburgh leads Oneonta 51-25 at the half.

Probably the best half of basketball the Cardinals have played all year. They look like the team I thought they would be. Hope it continues for 20 more minutes. I can't believe Oneonta's shots will keep bouncing out. Sooner or later the Red Dragons will heat up. I hope it's later.

Eli Bryant leads all scorers with 13 points at the break. Jon Patron and Chriss Middleton both have 10 points. The Cardinals are hot, hot, hot from 3 point land going 8 for 14 in the half.

Oneonta's big 3 have most of the points. Frankie Kelly with 9, Mikey McElroy with 8 and Lawrence Coleman with 7. That's 24 of their 25 points.

Halftime scores

Geneseo leads Cortland 42-36.

Justin Ringen with 18 points for the Knights.

Michael Kelly with 11 and James Morales with 9 for the Red Dragons.

Certainly not happy to hear that Zach Lydon is out for Cortland. He's been a big part of their recent success as his play has continued to get better as the season progressed. Sorry to hear about Carrel Joseph as well, also a very valuable player for Cortland and a big reason for their success last year.

magicman

New Paltz leads Potsdam 36-32 with the 2nd half about a minute old.

Dylan Balducci  and Andrew Seniuk both with 11 points for the Hawks.

Jayquan Thomas and Dante Langley with 9 points each for the Bears.

magicman

Brockport leads Oswego 36-30 at the half.

Clifton Lyerly with 9 points to lead the Golden Eagles. Hamed Shamseldin and Justin Summers with 8 points each.

Ian Schupp leads the Lakers with 12 points and Brian Sortino has 7.

magicman

Geneseo defeats Cortland 75-73.

Cortland with a chance to win it had the ball and dribbled the clock down. They took a 3 pointer that clanged off the rim and the buzzer sounded a second later.

Plattsburgh defeats Oneonta by a final of 92-82 I think, as they showed 3 different final scores. Also had the score 91-83 and 93-81.

Cardinals win and still aren't in the playoffs as the Geneseo win over the other Red Dragon team gave the Knights a playoff berth. Plattsburgh only gets in now if Buffalo State gets upset by Fredonia and I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell of that happening.

With Brockport losing last night, then winning today - the SUNYAC might just be a one bid league this year.  Definitely some bubble watching for sure.

Buffalo State defeats Fredonia 60-59 when the Blue Devils, with the final possession, fail to get off a decent shot.
Bengals miss two free throws with 26 seconds left to play that would have given them a 3 point lead. Fredonia grabbed the rebound and immediately took a time out. After the TO they inbounded the ball and brought it up over the time line and took another time out with 14 seconds left. Then they inbounded the ball after that TO, and took a 3rd timeout with 9 seconds left. Finally they inbounded the ball to Ian Helps who handed it off to Nicc Johnson. He drove across the lane and tried to attack the basket from the right side but the Bengal defense didn't allow him to penetrate. He threw up an off balance attempt at a bank shot that wasn't close and the ball was batted around past half court as the buzzer sounded.

Congratulations to the Bengals for holding them off.

With the win the Bengals capture the 5th seed in the playoffs and Plattsburgh is on the outside looking in.

Potsdam State defeats New Paltz 84-82 in overtime.

In a game that featured 7 lead changes and 7 ties  the Bears finally came out on top when they scored 5 points in the last 14 seconds to end the game. It was a reversal of what the Hawks had pulled off at the end of regulation.

The Bears were up 73-69 in regulation, after Danny Delsol-Lowry made a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left. After a Potsdam time out, the Hawks hurried down and threw up a 3 pointer that missed, but Tristan Wissemann grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled when he made the putback. He sank the "and one" to pull the Hawks within a point and then New Paltz fouled with just 14 seconds left to play. The Bears missed the front end of the 1&1 giving life to the Hawks. New Paltz missed the game winner with 3 seconds left but the Hawks, once again, got the offensive rebound and Nick Arthur was fouled on the play with 1 second showing on the clock. He only made 1 of 2 for the tie, sending the teams to the extra session.

The Hawks thankful for the reprieve, jumped in front of the Bears quickly by a 6 point 79-73 score. Potsdam got a pair from the line by Dante Langley and a 3 pointer from Nosa Onabor to narrow the gap and another trip to the line got them 1 of 2 for the tie at 79 apiece. Wissemann then buried a 3 pointer with 31 seconds remaining in overtime. Potsdam called a time out with 19 seconds left and Danny Delsol-Lowry hit a jumper to bring them within a point. The Hawks had the ball stolen 5 seconds later by Jayquan Thomas who was fouled making the theft. He made the first free throw to tie the game but missed the second one to give them the lead. It was the Bears turn to grab an offensive rebound and Dante Langley made up for his missed free throw at the end of regulation by not only snaring the rebound but scoring with only 5 seconds left to give the Bears the lead. New Paltz had a shot at the buzzer come up short and Potsdam walked off with the win.

The Bears got a game high 28 points from Nosa Onabor. He also had 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. He hit 7 three pointers in 14 attempts.
Danny Delsol-Lowry had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He added 5 assists and 2 steals.
Dante Langley had 15 points and 6 rebounds, none bigger than his last one, to give his team the win.
Jayquan Thomas filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and a block.

Andrew Seniuk was the high man for the Hawks with 21 points and 4 rebounds.
Dylan Balducci had 15 points and 3 rebounds.
Corey Garcia had a double-double with 14 points and 16 assists. He added 6 rebounds and 5 steals.
Tristan Wissemann had 14 points and 6 rebounds.
Nick Arthur also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also had 4 assists and 3 blocks.

The Bears ended their season with a 3-22 record overall and 2-16 in the conference. They return most of their roster and improvement is on the horizon.

New Paltz ends up with a 1-23 record and 0-18 in the conference. They only lose one player off this year's roster so next year should be a better season for the Hawks.

Plattsburgh State 92  Oneonta State 82

I picked the Cardinals to win this game by a 90-87 final score. I was clutching at straws and really thought the Red Dragons would get the W. Just didn't want to pick against my Cards. Proud of the way my guys took control of this game right from the start. They played like their backs were to the wall, (and they certainly couldn't get any closer) and did what they had to do, to give them their best chance of making the playoffs. Two other games, out of their control, both came down to last second shots. Both of those shots came up empty and the Cardinals season was over.

Plattsburgh came out on fire and the only reason they didn't lead from start to finish is because Oneonta won the tip and Mikey McElroy scored immediately to put the Red Dragons up 2-0. It was tied at 5-5 and that was the last time that happened as well. Plattsburgh went up 14-7 on a Jon Patron 3 pointer, and made it a double digit lead at 24-14, on an Isaiah Hill 3 pointer. That came in the middle of a 20-2 Plattsburgh explosion over a 4 minute span and when Eli Bryant buried his third 3 pointer of the half, the score was 38-16 with 7 minutes left in the period. The Cardinals would go on to put up 13 more points on the board before the buzzer and held Oneonta to 9 points, to enter the break up 51-25.

Plattsburgh had a huge lead but I knew that Oneonta wouldn't quit. And they couldn't keep shooting as poorly as they were. The Red Dragons couldn't hit a shot from 3 point range to save their soul. They missed 15 straight attempts from downtown and weren't shooting that great from inside the arc either. Plattsburgh gradually increased their lead and with 13:22 left to play they were in front by 33 points, 65-32.

The Red Dragons slowly tried to fight their way back into contention. A 10-1 run cut the lead to 24 points but 5 straight points by Patron built it back to 29. Another 10-2 surge by Oneonta capped by a three pointer from Ian Schultz, their first triple of the game, brought them back to a 21 point deficit at 73-52, with 7:16 left to play. The Red Dragons were in full court press mode and the Cardinals got caught making some sloppy passes. The turnovers led to 8 Oneonta points and the 3 pointers started to fall. With 4:01 to go the lead was now just 10 points at 79-69. The Red Dragons were running out of time and got it down to 7 points on two occasions but each time Plattsburgh went to their go to guy and Jon Patron responded with big baskets. Down by 9 points with 50 seconds to go, Oneonta had to foul and the Cardinals put the game away. Heck of a comeback by Oneonta to make a game of it after being down by so many with so little time left.

The Cardinals
Jon Patron captured scoring honors with 24 points, shooting 9x12 from the field, 2x3 from deep and 4x5 from the line. He also had 7 rebounds and a block.
Eli Bryant had 17 points (6x12 fg, 3x6 3's, 2x2 ft), 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Brandon Johnson had 16 points (4x7 fg, 1x2 3's, 7x10 ft), 8 rebounds and 5 assists in 24 minutes off the bench.
Ian Howard had a double-double with 11 points (4x9 fg, 3x3 ft) and a game high 12 rebounds.
Chris Middleton had 10 points (4x9 fg, 2x2 3's, 0x1 ft), 3 assists, 2 rebounds a steal and a block.
Zack Coleman had 9 points (3x7 fg, 0x2 3's, 3x4 ft), 4 assists and 3 rebounds.
Isaiah Hill had 5 points, 4 boards and 1 assist in 14 minutes off the bench

The Red Dragons
Frankie Kelly was the team co-leader with 21 points (8x15 fg. 1x4 3's, 4x5ft), a game high 6 assists, 3 rebounds and a steal.
Lawrence Coleman also had 21 points (8x14 fg, 2x3 3's, 3x5 ft), and a team high 8 rebounds.
Mikey McElroy had 20 points (8x20 fg, 1x5 3's 3x4 ft) with 4 rebounds, 1 assist and a block.
Dwayne Freeman had 6 points, 4 rebounds and a steal.
Jack Kolosky had 6 points, 4 blocks, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Ian Schultz had 3 points, the triple that broke the ice from long range, a team high 8 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal in 19 minutes off the bench.

The Cardinals outshot the Red Dragons from the field, 51.7% (31x60) to 42,5% (31x73), from long range, 47.9% (9x19) to 22.7% (5x22) and from the line, 77.8% (21x27 to 71.4% (15x21).

Plattsburgh also won the battle of the boards 47 to 32 but Oneonta only had 6 turnovers to 17 for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh ends their season on a winning note with a 2 game road sweep on the final weekend. They finished up 13-12 overall and 9x9 in the SUNYAC. The good news is they return their top 10 players and should be a prime contender next year.

Oneonta falls to 15-10 overall and 12-6 in the YAC. They captured the 3rd seed and will host #6 seed Geneseo this Tuesday at 5:30.

The final SUNYAC Player of the Week for Men's Basketball was Plattsburgh State's Jon Patron. It was the 2nd time this season that Jon was chosen as the Player of the Week, as he received that award back on December 5th, 2016, as well.

Congratulations to Jon on a great week. Below is the write up from the SUNYAC website.

Jonathan Patron, Plattsburgh
Feb 20, 2017
(So, F - Huntington, N.Y.)
Plattsburgh State sophomore forward Jonathan Patron averaged 24.7 points and 10 rebounds per game in a 2-1 week for the Cardinals. He shot 68.1 percent (32-of-47) from the floor for the week, including a 75.8 percent (25-of-33) clip against SUNYAC teams. After scoring 16 points in a 91-70 loss to No. 10 Middlebury College on Tuesday, Patron helped Plattsburgh State bounce back with a 34-point outing on 16-of-21 shooting in an 80-78 win over SUNY New Paltzon Friday, scoring what wound up being the game-winning basket with two seconds left in regulation. He also grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds against the Hawks. Finally, on Saturday, he drained 24 points in a 92-82 win over SUNY Oneonta. Patron currently sits just 182 points shy of 1,000 for his career after just his sophomore campaign.

All-Time

2 games tonight

Oneonta at home against Geneseo. The Red Dragons won both games during the regular season and tonight won't be that different. Look for the Red Dragons to win by double digits.

Buffalo State on the road against Cortland. If Joseph and Lydon are out look for Buffalo State to come out fast and furious and get into the semi-finals in Oswego this weekend.

Enjoy the games
