Lycoming 89 New Paltz State 68

The Hawks were hanging around in the first half of the opening period and were only down 22-16 with 12 minutes to play in the stanza. However they got hammered from that point until the buzzer sounded as Lycoming outscored them 32-11 over the rest of the period. The Warriors were able to double them up 54-27 at the break. The Hawks were down 32-20 with 9 minutes to play, but Lycoming went on a 17-1 run  over the next 6 minutes to build the huge halftime lead.

New Paltz did come back a bit in the 2nd half but the Lycoming bench played 69 of the 100 2nd half minutes and all 14 players on the team scored. 12 players had double digit minutes in the game or the MOV could have been much larger.

New Paltz got 13 points each from Tristan Wissemann and Dylan Balducci. Nick Paquette had 12 points and a game high 8 rebounds.

Lycoming only had 2 guys in double figures with Chris Wallace capturing scoring honors with 15 points in 17 minutes of floor time. Calvin Chandler came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 6 rebounds.

New Paltz falls to 3-7 overall (1-3 YAC) and will meet the Kings College Monarchs on Saturday at 1:00 PM in the consolation game of the Lycoming Tournament.  Kings lost to Carnegie Mellon 80-68 on Friday.

Dec. 30  Five games taking place today involving conference teams. Rushed for time so quick picks are the order of the day.

New Paltz State  vs  King's College        1:00 PM   Louis Basinger Memorial Tournament @ Williamsport, PA  Consolation game

Hawks are 3 point underdogs in this one. Would like to see them win it but think they come up short. Kings 78 New Paltz 72

Houghton   @  Geneseo State        2:00 PM

The Knights are favored  by 12 points in this one and should cover that spread. Geneseo wins by a a score of 81-68.

Salisbury  vs  Oneonta State                 3:00 PM   Staten Island Tournament @ Staten Island, N.Y. Championship Game

The Red Dragons are slight 3 point dogs in this matchup and will have their work cut out for them. The Seagulls have faced some stiff competition and are 6-4 coming into this contest.  I hope I'm wrong on this one but see Salisbury winning by a score of 86-82.

Oswego State  @  Utica                        5:00 PM   Utica College Basketball Classic Championship Game

The Lakers need to play better than they did yesterday if they want to beat the host Pioneers. Oswego is listed as a 2 point favorite a making this a virtual tossup. Both teams suffered a close loss to Hamilton swhich was gtheir only common opponent. I'll take the Lakers to win this one by a 75-71 final score.

Clarkson  @Plattsburgh State        2:00 PM

The Cardinals return to action after a 3 week layoff. Clarkson has had the same exact 3 week layoff as both teams last played on December 9th. This game marks the return to action of Plattsburgh's leading scorer from last year, Jon Patron. He will be a welcome addition for the 4-4 Cardinals who have struggled without their go to guy. The oddsmakers have Plattsburgh listed as a 10 point favorite but I think the MOV will be a bigger number. Plattsburgh wins this one 90-74

Jan. 2    Two games on tap to start the New Year for SUNYAC teams and then it's back to conference play on the weekend.

Carnegie Mellon  at   Brockport State        2:00 PM

The Golden Eagles have revenge on their minds as they got thumped by the Tartans last year 89-66. They also lost to them in their previous meeting which took place in the NCAA tournament way back in March of 2009. That one really hurt because it was a double overtime affair that found Brockport on the short end of a 75-70 score. So if revenge is a dish best served cold, Coach Dunne will really savor a win today, with all the time that has gone by since that loss. The oddsmakers rate Brockport as a slim 3 point favorite in this one but I think they win by a few more. Brockport 87 Carnegie Mellon 74.

Fredonia State  at  D'Youville        6:00 PM

The Blue Devils are slight underdogs in this game but it is certainly one they could put in the win column. Both teams are struggling and each only has 2 wins. Fredonia won last year's contest by 22 points. I think they can win this year's as well but it will be much closer.  Fredonia 68 D'Youville 62

All-Time

Let's get Ready to Rumble.
It's SUNYAC time, when these teams beat up on each other to get to the SHIP.

5 Games on tap tonight:

Oswego over New Paltz

Sorry to say Cortland over my Red Dragons, just think Cortland has too many weapons.

Magicman's Cardinals over Buffalo State. Mr Patron is BACK, which makes ALL the Difference in the World for Plattsburgh.

Magicman's Bears over Fredonia

Brockport over Geneseo

Enjoy the Games

Jan. 5  All ten teams in action tonight as the SUNYAC resumes its conference schedule with 5 games all tipping off at 7:30 PM.

Oswego State  at  New Paltz        7:30 PM

The Lakers had put together a nice 5 game winning streak but couldn't keep the momentum going against a so-so Utica College team that I feel they should have beaten. Tonight they face another team they had better not take too lightly as the Hawks have made some big strides, this year, toward respectability. New Paltz has won 4 games this year which is 2 shy of all the wins they've had for the past two years combined. The oddsmakers have listed Oswego as a 5 point favorite in this one and the Hawks have shown they can hang with most teams in the YAC by virtue of their win over Geneseo and close calls against Oneonta and Brockport. I see the Lakers winning this one by a 74- 68 final score but I wouldn't be surprised at a New Paltz upset either.

Cortland State  at  Oneonta State        7:30 PM     Featured Game of the Night

The first of the annual Red Dragon battles and the visiting kind has the edge in this year's matchups. The oddsmakers think this is virtually a tossup as they have made Cortland a favorite by a single point. Coach Spanbauer saw his team's 7 game winning streak, the    longest one in the conference, come to an end over the holidays when they took it on the chin 93-72 against a respectable Washington and Lee team from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. They trailed 13-0 early on, fought back to get within a single point at 24-23, and then after being down 46-37 at the break, allowed the Generals to open up the 2nd half with a 25-4 run that put the game out of reach at 71-43 with 13:30 left to play. It was a loss that these Red Dragons would like to forget quickly and beating their conference namesakes would help that happen. Meanwhile Oneonta was beating another team from the ODAC over the holidays with a 65-59 win over Roanoke. They lost the next day in the Staten Island tournament championship game to Salisbury by a 65-61 score but these Red Dragons are still playing some decent basketball and are capable of beating any team in the conference. They could just as easily have a 4-0 record in the YAC instead of being 2-2. That being said,  I see Cortland winning this game by a final score of 82-74.

Potsdam State  at  Fredonia State        7:30 PM

The Bears handled the Blue Devils the first time around by giving them their worst defeat of the season, a 36 point drubbing, 88-52. The oddsmakers must have considered that game an aberration, as they have favored Fredonia by a single point in the rematch. Potsdam at 5-5, has already won as many games this year as they have in any season for the past 5 years. Fredonia hasn't had as much success this year as they did last season when they challenged for a spot in the playoffs. I have to go with the Bears in this game but I think it will be a much closer contest than the previous one. Potsdam 73 Fredonia 67.

Geneseo State  at  Brockport State        7:30 PM

The Knights take on their travel partners for their first meeting of the season. Brockport has won 7 of the past 10 games but the teams have split the season series for the past 3 years. The Golden Eagles are 8-3 and probably should be 9-2 as I'm puzzled by the loss to Western Connecticut, a team that was beaten by both Potsdam and New Paltz. Port should have handled that team easily. Geneseo has been an up and down team all season long and they have yet to win two games in a row. Coming off a win against Houghton leaves the Knights vulnerable tonight. Brockport is favored by a solid 9 points and I think they win this one by an 84-76 final.

Plattsburgh State  at  Buffalo State        7:30 PM

The Cardinals finally have all their pieces in place as John Patron, last year's leading scorer and rebounder, (18.9 ppg, 9.0 rpg) is back, after sitting out the first semester to make up for the semester he lost when he transferred into Plattsburgh 2 years ago. He suited up for the Clarkson game last Saturday, a game Plattsburgh won by a 77-70 score and got the rust off with 21 minutes of floor time coming in from the bench. He had 11 points and 7 rebounds but figures to be a bit more forwardly placed in tonight's action against Buffalo State. The Cardinals winners of their last 2 games, currently own the longest winning streak in the SUNYAC and are finally over the .500 mark at 5-4.  The Bengals lost their first meeting this year in Plattsburgh by a 95-68 final score and will be looking for some payback. They are always tough in the Queen City and I expect they will make this game much closer than the last one. So do the oddsmakers as they have made Plattsburgh a slim 3 point favorite. While I think it will be closer I don't think it will be that close. Final score Plattsburgh State 92 Buffalo State 78.

Final Score   Plattsburgh State 96  Buffalo State 83

My prediction of a 14 point Cardinal win was pretty close to the actual score, however this one was much closer than the final score indicated as the Bengals had the lead 79-76 with 4:41 left to play in the game. Plattsburgh fueled by Eric Mack's 7 straight points then went on a game ending 20-4 run to secure the double digit win. Mack started the final 20 point push with a 3 pointer to tie the score at 79. After a Bengal turnover and a Cardinal missed field goal Mack grabbed the rebound and stuffed it back for the Cardinal's go ahead bucket. At the other end the Bengals missed from the field and Jon Patron grabbed another of his game high 14 rebounds, fired it down the court where it ultimately ended up in Mack's hands once again and he scored to make it 83-79. The Bengals misfired once more, Patron ripped down another rebound and this time Eli Bryant drove to the basket and laid it in. Bryant then stole the ball, fed Chris Middleton who scored to make it 87-79 forcing a Bengal timeout. Another Buff State turnover led to a trip to the line by Plattsburgh's  Nick DeAngelis who made 2 free throws and after the Bengals finally scored, Jon Patron made an old fashioned 3 point play to make it 92-81 with 1:33 left to play and this one was over.

Jon Patron returned to conference play with a vengeance as the All Conference player scored a game high 29 points with a game high 14 rebounds to round out his double-double. He added 2 assists, 2 steals and a block in his 31 minutes off the bench.

Eric Mack scored a season high 23 points and just missed a double-double with 8 rebounds.

Eli Bryant had 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Chris Middleton had 8 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals.

Nick DeAngelis added 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

For the Bengals Mike Henry was the high man with 25 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Sheldon Adams tied his career-high with 22 points and 7 rebounds.

Sir.Quintin Campbell added 15 points and 4 rebounds.

Malik Turner had 9 points, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Bryan Harrell had 7 points, 4 steals, 2 boards, an assist and a block.

While the shooting totals from the field and long range were fairly close, Plattsburgh was 28 for 35 from the charity stripe while the Bengals made 9 of their 18 chances. The most telling stat was the rebounding battle where the Cardinals had 49 boards to just 20 for the Bengals. The Cardinals also had 19 of those rebounds on the offensive end which resulted in numerous 2nd chance buckets. The Bengals only had 2 offensive boards for the game.

Plattsburgh improves to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the YAC. They will take on Fredonia on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM.

Buffalo State drops to 5-6 on the season and 1-4 in the league. They will face the other North Country team when Potsdam invades the Queen City at 3:00 PM on Saturday.

Final score  Cortland State 87  Oneonta State 70

The Cortland Red Dragons won this one by a bigger margin than my crystal ball predicted but again the final score is misleading as this was a 2 possession game with just over 4 minutes remaining. Cortland was up 69-63 at that time and then proceeded to rip off an 11-2 run to go up 80-65 over the next 2 minutes to put the game on ice. Cortland led this one from start to finish but could never really put Oneonta away until that burst at the end of the game. They were up by a 44-32 halftime score and led by 6 to 12 points through most of the 2nd half. Oneonta closed to within 6 on a couple of occasions but could never get over the hump. That was due primarily to the 3 point shooting that Cortland relied on tonight (and on many nights, in many seasons) as these Red Dragons went 16 for 30 from behind the arc, with 7 different players hitting a shot from deep.

James Morales was the scoring leader in this game as he tallied 27 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. James was 10x13 from the field and 4x6 from long distance.

Justin Cooper had 14 points and was the top rebounder with 9 boards. He added 3 assists and a pair of steals.

Nicky Bonura tossed in 12 points, while Zach Lydon and Carrel Joseph both added 10 points each.

For the Oneonta Red Dragons, Carson Jacobs scored a career high 20 points to lead the team. He added 3 rebounds 2 assists and a block.

Kevin Mackin had 9 points followed by Matthew Boyd and Anthony Kirkwood with 8 points each. Boyd filled up the stat sheet with 4 rebounds, 3 assists 2 steals and 2 blocks.

Ian Schultz had a team high 5 rebounds, with 5 points, 3 assists, 2 steals, and a block.

Cortland improves to 10-2 overall and still in sole possession of first place in the conference with a  perfect 5-0 mark. They will travel to New Paltz for a game on Saturday at 3:00 PM

Oneonta falls to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference. They will face Oswego State at 3:00 PM on Saturday.

Coming off a win against Houghton leaves the Knights vulnerable tonight. Brockport is favored by a solid 9 points and I think they win this one by an 84-76 final.

Final score  Brockport State 88  Geneseo State 78

I came very close to hitting this score right on the button and my MOV was only off by 2 points. With 25 seconds left in the game the score was exactly what I predicted but 3 last second fouls resulted in 6 made free throws to spoil my perfect forecast.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead and managed to stay in front for the first 10 minutes of this game. Brockport finally caught them with 9:53 to play in the first period when Tyler Collins drained a 3 pointer to put the Golden Eagles in front for the first time at 20-19. The teams would stay close until Brockport up 33-31 got 8 straight points to go up 41-31 with a minute left in the half. The score at the break was Port, up 42-33.

The Golden Eagles maintained control thoughout the 2nd half as they had increased their halftime advantage to a total of 16 points  with just 4 minutes gone by in the half. A few seconds later David Clark buried a threeball and the lead was 63-44 as Brockport cruised through most of the period. The lead was never less than 10 points, until, with 1:51 left in the game, the Knights Kevin Crockett was fouled on a 3 point attempt and he made all 3 free throws to close the gap to 79-71. Brockport's Hamed Shamseldin was able to complete a 3 point play to boost the lead back to 11 points but the Knight's Quinn Carey hit a triple to counter that score. The Knights had to foul and Dwayne Daniel made a pair from the line. Tommy Eastman scored inside for Geneseo and with 25 seconds left the Knights got within 6 points with a pair of free throws from Zack Panebianco. That was their last hurrah however, as Daniel hit 4 straight free throws to stretch the lead back to 10 points.

Hamed Shamseldin for Brockport and Tommy Eastman for Geneseo shared scoring honors as they each poured in 23 points.  Shamseldin added 6 rebounds 3 assists and 2 steals.  In addition Eastman grabbed a game high 15 rebounds to complete his double-double. He also had 3 assists and a steal.

Brockport also got a double-double effort from Justin Summer with 16 points and 12 boards. Justin also had 5 blocks and 3 assists.

Dwayne Daniel added 15 points as he was 6x6 from the line.

David Clark was 1 rebound shy of a double-double as he scored 10 points and grabbed 9 boards.

Geneseo outrebounded the Golden Eagles 50 to 38 but Brockport led the Knights in all 3 areas of shooting stats. Port only had 7 turnovers to 14 for Geneseo.

In addition to Eastman's big night the Knights got a solid contribution from Quinn Carey with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Kevin Crockett also had a nice game with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Jordi Menkhorst had 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in 19 minutes off the bench.

Brockport improves to 9-3 overall and maintains their share of 2nd place in the conference with a 4-1 record. The Golden Eagles are off until next Tuesday Jan. 9th when they host Buffalo State at 7:30 PM.

Geneseo drops to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference. They will also be idle until Tuesday Jan. 9th when they will host Fredonia at 7:30 PM

I see the Lakers winning this one by a 74- 68 final score but I wouldn't be surprised at a New Paltz upset either.

Final score  Oswego State 84  New Paltz State 69

Just missed on the Hawks score while the Lakers put up a few more than I thought they would.

Oswego found themselves in a battle the entire first half as the Hawks fought back from an early deficit to take the lead. The teams  would jockey back and forth in a battle that saw numerous lead changes and several ties until the Lakers finally gained a slight edge. Tied at 37 with 1:48 left in the period, Oswego outscored the Hawks 9-4 to go up by 5 points and then the Hawks got a basket from Corey Garcia with just a few ticks left to make the halftime score Oswego 46 New Paltz 43.

The 2nd period started much like the first one ended with the teams trading blows for the first 8 minutes and several lead changes taking place. The Lakers were in front 54-52 when they used a 10-1 spurt to open up an 11 point double digit lead at 64-53. They continued to build on that lead and it eventually reached 19 points at 80-61 with 4:30 left to play. From there the Lakers coasted to the finish line.

Five Oswego players were in double figures led by Brandon Gartland with 19 points. He also had 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.

Tyler Pierre had a double-double of 13 points and a game high 11 rebounds. He added 2 assists a steal and a block.

Jamir Ferebee had 18 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal.

Ian Schupp had 14 points and Josh Ivey had 10 points and 5 boards.

Dylan Balducci captured scoring honors for the night with 22 points as he made 4 of 6 shots from downtown.

Nick Paquette had 14 points as he also made 4 of 7 shots from behind the arc.

Oswego improves to 7-5 and holds onto their share of 2nd place in the YAC with a 4-1 record. They will travel over to Oneonta  for a Saturday afternoon game that starts at 3:00 PM.

New Paltz will drop to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in the conference. They will host league leaders Cortland on Saturday at 3:00 PM

Final score Potsdam State 82 Fredonia State 74

Both teams scored a few more points than I thought they would but as I suggested, it was a much closer game than the first go around was. I missed the MOV by just 2 points.

The Bears have a winning streak for the 2nd time this season. They haven't seen a winning streak of any kind in their previous 4 seasons. The game started with the teams trading baskets until the Bears, up 10-9, went on a 14-3 run to open up a 24-12 advantage.
Still up 36-22 with 6:14 left in the first period, Potsdam slowly let the Blue Devils close the gap as Fredonia put together a 20-6 run of their own, fueled by 12 points from big man Ian Helps and the teams entered the break tied at 42.

The 2nd half found the teams locked in a battle and the first 6 minutes found several ties and 3 lead changes. The Bears were down 51-50 when they once again opened up some daylight with a 17-4 run to make it 67-55 with 10:15 to play. The lead would never be more than 12 or less than 5 points the rest of the way.

Danny Delsol-Lowry led Potsdam with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 1assist.

Nosa Onabor and Dante Langley both had 15 points. Onabor had 8 rebounds and 2 assists while Langly had 6 rebounds, 1 assist and a block.

The Blue Devils' Ian Helps captured scoring honors with 31 points and also had a game high 13 rebounds.

Isaiah Ice and Brian Baril both added 11 points. Baril had 6 rebounds and Ice had 4.

Potsdam inproves to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference. This is the most wins Potsdam has had since the 2012-13 season when they were 9-16. Later today they will take on Buffalo State in the Queen City at 3:00 PM.

Fredonia drops to 2-9 overall and 0-5 in the YAC. They host Plattsburgh State later today at 3:00 Pm

The SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week that ended on December 31st is Dylan Balducci from New Paltz State. Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website. Congratulations to Dylan.

Dylan Balducci, MBB, AOW, New Paltz
Jan 02, 2018
New Paltz's Dylan Balducci powered the Hawks to a 1-1 record and earned Athlete of the Week honors.  The senior guard put up 13 points and two assists in a tough loss to Lycoming.  In the Hawks' next game against King's (PA), Balducci was able to guide his team to a win.  The Massapequa Park native scored 24 points (6-9 on three-pointers) and added 6 assists and 3 rebounds in a 100-89 victory.

Jan. 6  Four games on tap today in the conference all taking place at 3:00 PM

Potsdam State  at  Buffalo State         3:00 PM

The Bears are on a winning streak but that will come crashing down today as the Bengals won't want to lose back to back games in their own house. The inside play of Mike Henry and Sir. Quintin Campbell will be too much for Potsdam to counter unless the Bengals don't go to Henry often and that would be a mistake. The oddsmakers have made Buffalo State an 8 point favorite in this one. I think the final will be something like...Buffalo State 90 Potsdam 78.

Cortland State  at  New Paltz State        3:00 PM

The Red Dragons are favored by 9 points in this one but I think they win by a bigger margin than that. They won by 16 in the last meeting in Cortland and I think they win by at least that many again today. Cortland 87 New Paltz 70.

Oswego State  at  Oneonta State         3:00 PM   Featured Game of the Day

The Lakers won a low scoring affair at home a month ago where neither team got out of the 40's. I think that was on Thowback Tuesday. Today the Red Dragons look for a little revenge. They won't want to lose another game at home after falling to Cortland yesterday and even the oddsmakers have taken that into consideration and installed Oneonta as a 4 point favorite. The teams have split their season series in 4 of the past 5 years with esch team winning at home in that stretch. I think that trend will continue today.
Oneonta 78 Oswego 73.

Plattsburgh State  at  Fredonia State    3:00 PM

The Cardinals need to avoid a letdown here after taking care of a stubborn Bengals squad yesterday. The Blue Devils can still pull off the upset and last year they defeated Plattsburgh in Plattsburgh which kept them out of the playoffs. Last month they hung with the Cardinals until halfway through the 2nd half before Plattsburgh began to pull away. If you let this team hang around they will jump up and bite you. The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh an 11 point favorite but i think they win by a bigger margin than that. The Cardinals didn't have Jon Patron in their 17 point win last month. I think he offsets any home court advantage the Blue Devils hope to get today. I'll take Plattsburgh to win this one by an 89-70 final score.
