Cortland State 92  Cabrini 86

Just like the Brockport game, the Red Dragons gave up a double digit lead late in the game and had to hold off the host team down the stretch. Cortland jumped out to an early lead and gradually built a 15 point advantage by the  midway point of the first period. They ended the half up 51-39. The Cavaliers got back into the game quickly in the 2nd stanza, and made it a contest by keeping the deficit between 6 to 9 points. Cortland finally regained a double figure lead with about 10 minutes left to play and were still up 83-71, with 5:26 remaining. The Cavaliers went on a last ditch push and a 12-4 run brought them within 4 points at 87-83 but only 1:45 on the clock. They had to foul and Cortland leads the nation (Division III) in free throw percentage which was over 82% going into the game. The Red Dragons hit 5 of 6 from the line and ended the night making 23 of 25 (92.0%).  I think their free throw percentage still leads all of DIII coming out of the game. :D

The Red Dragons shot 48% from the floor (28x58),  and 44.8%) percent (13x29) from 3-point range. They beat Cabrini in all 3 shooting areas and also had 41 rebounds to 31 for the Cavaliers. Cabrini won the turnover battle with only 5 giveaways to 13 for Cortland.

Justin Cooper led 4 Cortland players in double figures with his 7th double-double of the year. Cooper threw in 21 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out 4 assists and had 1 steal.

Ryan Schmadel had 29 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a block.

Nicky Bonura had 17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.

Zach Lydon had 15 points, 8 rebounds, a block and a steal.

Ben Walters  went 3x3 from downtown to finish with 9 points and 3 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.

Cortland kept their winning streak alive as they won their seventh straight game and improved to 9-2 overall (3-1 YAC). They finished their non-conference schedule going 6-1 with the only blemish being a loss to Division I Wagner. They will travel to Oneonta for their next game which is Part 1 of the Dragon Wars. That will take place on Tuesday January 8th at 6:00 PM.

Geneseo State  @   Morrisville State.   3:00 PM    This is the only game in town today.

The Knights are 7-1 against MoVille over the last 12 years so the Mustangs haven't had much success against them. Geneseo has been listed as a 4 point favorite in this game but these Mustangs are capable of pulling off the mild upset. The Knights have been off for almost a month but I'll still take them to win by a final score of 79-71.

Geneseo State loses to Morrisville State by a 95-85 final score.

Geneseo jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and stayed in front of the Mustangs through 9 minutes of the first half. MoVille finally caught then at 16 all, fell behind again by 5 points, at 21-16, caught up once more and finally gained their first lead at 24-23. The Knights responded with a 13-5 burst that reestablished that initial 7 point lead at 36-29. Unfortunately for Geneseo the Mustangs came right back with a 7-1 mini run to close the half and only trailed by a single point at the break 37-36.

The first 3 minutes of the 2nd half had 4 lead changes and 2 ties until Geneseo, tied at 43, went on a 9-2 spurt and led 52-45 at the 15:21 mark. The Mustangs however, one upped the Knights and went on a 12-0 bender of their own to grab a 57-52 lead. The Knights tied it up but the Mustangs got back to back 3 pointers on 2 successive trips while Geneseo came up empty in between. The lead was 6 points and inched up to 8 at 69-61 with 8:44 remaining. The Knights could never catch up after that. The closed to within 3 points on 2 separate instances but each time MoVille responded to build the lead back to 7 or 8 or 10. The Knights got the deficit down to 6 points when Jack Manke made a pair of free throws with 3:07 left and again at 2:38 when Manke made a layup, but the Knights couldn't get a stop when they needed to and the Mustangs cruised to their largest lead of 12 points by hitting 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch.

Terrence Nichols led Geneseo with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Zack Panebianco had 15 points, and 2 assists.

Jack Manke had 12 points and a team high 8 rebounds.

Michael Gannon also tossed in 12 points with 5 rebounds.

Terrence Rogers had 11 assists 5 points and 2 rebounds.

Joseph Harclerode III had 9 points and 4 rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.

Morrisonville had 5 guys in double figures led by Kevin Dennis with a game high 21 points and a game high 11 rebounds.

Geneseo falls to 4-6 overall (1-3 YAC) and will be up next at Fredonia on Tuesday, January 8th at 7:30 PM.

The latest D3hoops Top 25 poll was posted on Monday evening and Plattsburgh State was ranked in the #17 spot. The Cardinals, who only had 2 games since the last poll was released on December 17th, dropped 4 places on the basis of a 1-1 record in those 2 games. Their point total fell from 285 down to 187.  Hopefully they can go on a nice winning streak as they did last year about this time.

Oswego State, after back to back losses lat week, dropped out of the Others Receiving Votes category. The Lakers had a steady climb through that part of the poll and with 2 wins in those games probably would have cracked the Top 25 this week. Instead they lost all of their 28 points and are back to square one.

Rochester who went 2-0 over the holiday break, was the big gainer for East Region teams, as the Yellowjackets jumped up 5 spots from 17th to #12. They went from 197 points to 284. They defeated Emory last Saturday and have 2 big games coming up this weekend on the road, against Washington U and Chicago. Those are the 3 teams that will challenge them for the UAA's automatic NCAA bid. If they win the weekend games they will have a leg up for that league crown and will probably break into the Top 10 of the next poll.

No other team from the East Region was mentioned in the latest poll.  Here is the link to the omplete poll:

Jan. 8         All ten teams back to the hardwood for SUNYAC clashes.

Cortland State   @  Oneonta State            6:00 P    Featured Game of the Night

Cortland's Dragons are hot as, well... dragon's breath, winners of 7 straight and 9-1 in Division III. Cortland is coming into this game fresh off a pair of close road contests, a 2 point overtime victory in a barnburner against St. John Fisher and a 6 point win over Cabrini.

Oneonta's variety is also heating up again at the right time. Should be some fireworks lighting up Dewar Arena this evening as this is always a hotly contested matchup. The two teams have played 13 times in the last 6 years and Cortland leads the series with a 7-6 record.

Oneonta really needs a victory, here at home, after struggling on the road against two conference teams they were expected to beat. If they open up 0-4 in the YAC they might be digging themselves a hole that even a dragon can't fly out of.

Cortland, 3-1 in conference play, is favored by a slim 2 point margin. These teams are very close to the same personnel that duked it out last February in the Conference Tournament semifinals, which Oneonta won 60-57. I think the Red Dragon variety from Cortland gain a measure of revenge tonight. Final score....Cortland 85 Oneonta 77.

Geneseo State  @  Fredonia                    7:30 PM

The Knights are 10-2 against Fredonia over the last 6 years and this year looks like another chance to add on to those favorable numbers. Fredonia hasn't broken into the win column yet this year and I think they will have a tough time doing so against one of the YAC teams. I hope they get some wins (as long as it isn't against Plattsburgh) as I want everyone in the YAC to experience the joys of victory. Today looks more like the agony of defeat, however, again. The oddsmakers have made Geneseo a 14 point favorite. I think the Blue Devils will lose to the Blue Knights but just might beat the spread. Geneseo wins this one 76-64.

Potsdam State  @  Plattsburgh State     7:30 PM

The Bears are hungry for a win over Plattsburgh because they haven't beaten their travel partner since February 10th, 2012. The Cardinals are 20-3 against the Bears in the last 12 years and winners of 13 straight games. But there has been progress and Potsdam has proven in the last few seasons that they are learning how to win games rather than giving them away. From November of 2013 through February of 2017, a span of 4 seasons, the Bears won a combined total of 11 games (5-2-1-3=11). Last year they went 11-14 and equaled the win total of the previous 4 years. This year they are off to a 6-5 start with a 2-2 record in the YAC. Does that translate into a victory tonight over the Cardinals? I hope not, but it does mean you can't pencil in a W on the schedule until the game is in the record books. Potsdam's starting 5 can play with anybody. They are athletic and if they get hot the Cardinals will wind up on the short end wondering what happened. If you want the top seed come tournament time, you need to protect your home court and especially against teams not ranked in the top echelon.

Plattsburgh has went 2-2 in its last 4 games after starting out 7-0. Those were a last second loss at Brockport and a loss down in Florida over the semester break to Wesleyan. No need to call the doctor just yet, but the Cardinals need to take better care of the ball and improve on their 3 point shooting. Both losses featured abysmal performances behind the arc. (a combined 7x51).

The oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a 17 point favorite in this game. They haven't beaten many teams by that margin this year....actually only once have they done so. I like the Cardinals to win this game but think the Bears will cover. Plattsburgh 92 Potsdam 78.

Brockport State  @  Buffalo State            7:30 PM

If anybody has the Bengals number it has to be Brockport State. The Golden Eagles are 15-2 against the Bengals over the past 7 years and I know a few people in the Queen City who would like to change that. Not only that but the Golden Eagles have knocked the Bengals out of the playoffs in 4 out of their last 5 meetings. This doesn't appear to be the year that Buffalo State will be able to do it either as the Bengals are off to a slow start with a young team. Brockport already owns a win against 2 of the top teams in the YAC and they are hopeful of earning the top seed for the first time in a few years.

The oddsmakers have made the Golden Eagles a 6 point road favorite but the Bengals have shown they can play with anybody at least for most of the game. As I mentioned they are a young team and they need to learn to win. They did just that against St. John Fisher but regressed a bit in their last 4 games. I like Brockport to get the win here but won't be surprised if the Bengals pull off a mild upset. Brockport State 94 Buffalo State 86.

New Paltz State  @  Oswego State            7:30 PM

If victories were money then Oswego State would own New Paltz State, or at least 90% of it. The Lakers are 20-2 against the Hawks over the past 12 years and have won 9 in a row. But these aren't the same old, same old, Hawks as Oneonta found out a couple of weeks ago. Of course beating Oneonta in your barn and beating Oswego in their barn are two vastly different dynamics, as the Hawks are about to find out. Still the upset special is a factor in play here, where it wasn't much of a factor in the past several years. Oswego may have been exposed a bit by its road trip over the holidays as they went from the undefeated, powerful and about to be ranked, to just another decent team. That's what happens when you fly too close to the sun. Still, in their favor they played two decent teams but they just didn't have their best effort.  There's still time to become that ranked team, though, and it starts with another winning streak

The oddsmakers have made the Lakers a big 16 point home favorite here and here's the reason why....seven teams have invaded Laker Hall this season and all of them have lost by double figures. Five of them were non-conference foes and 2 of them were YAC teams. Both YAC teams, Brockport and Geneseo  lost by 10 points. I'll take Oswego to win this one by a final score of 80-66.

Tuesday night's results.

Cortland State  85 Oneonta State 65

I had Cortland winning this game by scoring 85 points. Thought Oneonta would score a few more than 65. Teams had 6 ties and 10 lead changes in the first half that ended in a tie at 32 each. The first 3 minutes of the 2nd period was more of the same but then Cortland got a little separation and went up by 5 points at 39-34. The lead stayed between 4 and 8 points until a layup by Zach Lydon and a 3 pointer by Nicky Bonura gave Cortland the first double digit lead of the night at 55-43 with 12 minutes remaining. Still up by 11 at 62-51, with 7 minutes to go, Cortland applied the finishing touch by outscoring Oneonta 8-1 over the next 2 minutes as Justin Cooper went to the line on 3 straight possessions and made a pair of free throws each time. Nicky Bonura scored inside on the next trip and with 5:17 remaining the Red Dragons from Cortland had put this one out of reach as the lead ballooned to 70-52. Cortland eased off the gas pedal and coasted to the win.

Once more Cortland was deadly from the free throw line as they made 22x25 (88%) while Oneonta was only 8x18. There's a big part of the winning margin. Cortland also made 7 three pointers while Oneonta only had 3 from long range. Oneonta did win the rebounding battle 47-40 but had 13 turnovers to 9 for Cortland.

Justin Cooper led all scorers with 23 points and completed his double-double with 13 rebounds, also a game high. Kenny Charles also had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Nicky Bonura had 18 points.

Ian Schultz lead Oneonta with 21 points (10x12 fg) and a team high 8 rebounds. Andres Rivera had 17 points and 7 rebounds. Kevin Mackin had 11 points and 4 rebounds.

Cortland improves to 10-2 (4-1 in the SUNYAC) and will host 1st place Oswego State on Saturday at 4 PM in a battle for the top spot.

Oneonta falls 5-5 overall and (0-4 in the SUNYAC). Next up they will host Geneseo on Friday at 7:30 PM and Brockport the next day at 4:00 PM.

Fredonia State 91  Geneseo State 84  In double overtime

Fredonia gets into the win column by knocking off the Knights and it may end up as the hardest fought victory of the year, by anyone in the YAC. These two teams went at each other all game long and the largest lead ended up being 7 points at 57-50 and the final score of 91-84. I was right about one thing in my forecast of this game...Fredonia did beat the spread....but that's the only thing I was correct about. Points were skewed by the double OT and of course I had Geneseo to win. Glad to see Fredonia get off the  schneid and into the winners circle for a change.

You have to admire the Blue Devils. Twice, at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime, they had the lead with just a few seconds left to play, yet both times Geneseo managed to tie the score to force another period. The 3rd time was a charm though and Fredonia moved in front by 2 possessions when those final seconds were ticking off. Many times when a team loses that win because the other team scores to send it to overtime, the momentum swings to the team that tied it up. Fredonia wanted this one and refused to let it get away. Maybe more wins are forthcoming.

The Blue Devils got a monstrous effort from De'Quan Smith who lit up Dods Hall with a 39 point career high effort. He was 15x25 from the field, hit 6x12 from downtown, and was 3x5 from the line. He added 5 steals, 3 assists, 2 rebounds and a block.

Bediako Nyasa came off the bench with a big contribution as he scored 16 points, with 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 26 minutes. Mark Morgan had 11 points and 7 boards, and Isaiah Ice had 10 points and 6 assists.

Geneseo got a team high 21 points from Michael Gannon who came off the bench but played 35 minutes. That's more than most starters get, normally.

Four other Knight players had double figures which included Terrance Nichols with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Zack Panebianco tossed in 14 points, while Sean Crowley added 10 points, 5 rebounds and a pair of assists.

Jack Manke had a double-double of 10 points and a game high 11 rebounds. He also had 3 blocks.

The Blue Devils outshot the Knights from the field and from long range which made up for the large discrepancy at the foul line. Geneseo was 20x29 at the stripe while Fredonia was only 7x11. Numbers like that would normally spell l-o-s-s but the Blue Devils made up for it by canning 14x34 from long distance. Geneseo was only 8x28.

Fredonia is now 1-9 (1-3 YAC) and their hard work has given them the task of facing the defending SUNYAC Champions on the road. Their next game will be against Plattsburgh State as they travel to the North Country to tackle the Cardinals on Friday night at 7:30 PM. They will face Potsdam gthe next day at 4:00 PM.

Geneseo falls to 4-7 overall (1-4 SUNYAC) and drops into 9th place in the standings. They will also hit the road as they travel to Oneonta to take on the 10th place team at 7:30 PM on Friday.

Brockport State 88  Buffalo State 85

I had Brockport winning by a 94-86 score. I wasn't too far off and the MOV was a little closer than I anticipated.

The Bengals used a quick 7-0 start to grab the lead right after the opening tip and maintained a 6 to 9 point advantage through the first 8 minutes of play. Still up 22-15 with 11:21 left in the period Ryniek Holloway buried a threeball for the Bengals to give them a 25-15 edge. After Brockport's Josh Nelson hit a 3 pointer to cut it to 7 points, the Bengals had another 9-2 spurt, ending with a triple from Dom Grayer, to give them a 36-22 lead with 4:45 left in the half. Brockport closed the gap by outscoring the Bengals 14-4 0ver the final 4 minutes of the period. The halftime score still had Buff state in front, but only by a 36-32 score.

Brockport wasted little time erasing the deficit as they led off the 2nd half with an 8-1 burst that gave them the lead for the first time at 44-41, 2 minutes in. The Bengals would tie the score at 44 and again at 51 but the Golden Eagles would slowly take over the game and build a lead that reached double figures at 66-55 with 9 minutes remaining. Twice over the next 4 minutes Buff State would trim the lead to 4 points but each time the Eagles responded and the 2nd time had an 8-2 spurt  that boosted the lead back to 12 points with only 3:51 left to play. Buffalo State then got 8 straight points from Grayer, a 3 pointer, a layup and another 3 pointer, to make it 82-78 with 1:24 left on the clock. Brockport got 2 points from the line, while Holloway scored on a layup. Then the Bengals got a steal and Holloway got the hoop and some harm. He completed the 3 point play and Buffalo State had come nearly all the way back as they trailed 84-83 with 41 seconds to go. They couldn't get that stop they needed though as Brockport's Chris Atkinson nailed a jumper to put his team up by 3. The Bengals came down and quickly scored inside and fouled Atkinson after Port inbound the ball. He made both free throws leaving the Bengals with 4 seconds to make a three and send it to overtime. That didn't happen and Brockport left the Queen City with another W in their pocket.

Big win for Brockport as they were without the services of their top player as Justin Summers was not in the lineup. Also didn't have Tyler Collins, their 3rd leading scorer who has missed the last few games. I'm sure the coaching staff and Brockport fans were holding their breath wondering how they would manage with those 2 starters missing. Hope both of these players will be back soon.

Brockport was led by Antonio Alvarez with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Chris Atkinson had 20 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Devante Hagins had a double-double of 10 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Jahidi Wallace had 17 points and 8 rebounds.

Dom Grayer led all scorers with 33 points as he was 12x20 from the field and hit 9x13 shots from long distance. Sheldon Adams had 16 points and 5 assists. Ryniek Holloway had 11 points and 3 assists. Kay Grant had 7 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Jordan Christopher had 7 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists.

Brockport won the boards with 48 rebounds to 34 for the Bengals but the turnover battle was in Buffalo State's favor as they created 23 turnovers, with just 12 of their own. Brockport was 27x34 from the line. Bengals only 12x18 from the stripe. That had to hurt.

Brockport improves to 8-4 overall and (4-1 in the YAC). They will travel to New Paltz on Friday for a game at 7:30 PM.

Buffalo State falls to 3-7 overall and (1-3 in the SUNYAC).  They are headed to the cold North Country to take on Potsdam State on Friday evening at 7:30 PM.

Oswego State 86  New Paltz State 56

Not much drama to this game as Oswego took it to the Hawks. They were favored by 16 and I thought the final might be 80-66.  I had my 8's and 6's but not quite in the right order.

The Lakers opened up with the lead and New Paltz tried to stay with them and after the first 7 minutes were only down 9-7. That's when the roof fell in. Over the next 8 minutes Oswego went on a 22-0 run and with 5 minutes to play the score was 31-7. This game was basically over but it got even worse as the Lakers went on another run of 13-4, to cruise into halftime with a 44-11 advantage.

Give credit to the Hawks, who didn't quit even when they were down by over 30 points. They actually outscored the Lakers in the 2nd half by a 45-42 margin but this wasn't a scrimmage where you win 1 half.... lose 1 half...and break even. Oswego got to use all of their reserves and I imagine, so did the Hawks.

Quinn Carey led all scorers with 26 points and 4 rebounds. He was 6x12 from 3 point range. Brandan Gartland had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Tyler Pierre was the leading rebounder in the game with 11 boards and 5 points. Liam Sanborn had 7 assists, 5 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Tristan Wissemann led the Hawks in points with 21 and rebounds with 7.  Jake Passaretti chipped in with 10 points.

Oswego dominated all phases of the game as they outshot the Hawks in all 3 areas. They had 47 rebounds to 33 for New Paltz and only had 10 turnovers to 14 for the Hawks.

The Lakers get back into the win column as they improve to 10-2 and hold onto sole possession of 1st place in the SUNYAC with a 5-0 record to keep them a game ahead of Plattsburgh, Cortland and Brockport who are all 4-1. They are off until Saturday, January 12th when they travel to Cortland to take on those Red Dragons at 4:00 PM.

New Paltz drops to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the YAC.  They will host Brockport on Friday evening at 7:30 PM.

Tuesday Night Result.

#17 Plattsburgh State 79  Potsdam State 76

I had the Cardinals winning this game 92-78. The Bears did their part to make me look good but my Cardinals needed to make a few more 3 pointers to get to the 92 points I thought they would put up. The Cardinals didn't play well and were lucky to come out with a win. With the score tied at 76 and Plattsburgh in possession with 24 seconds left to play, the Cardinals elected to go for the last shot. Point guard Brandon Johnson dribbled down the clock and with about 5 seconds left, launched a jumper from several feet outside the 3 point line that finds its mark. There's 1.5 seconds left on the clock as the ball goes through the net. Potsdam tries a long inbounds pass that is picked off by the Cardinals to end the game.

Potsdam played well and hung with the Cardinals for most of the first half that featured 5 lead changes and 3 ties. The final lead change of the first half came when Plattsburgh's Ian Howard scored on a layup, to put the Cards in front 20-19. Plattsburgh then broke free,  with a 16-5 run, to go up by double digits at 36-24 with 1:18 left in the period. Five different Cardinals scored 7 baskets in that run and 3 of them came from the mid-range shooting of Chris Middleton. Plattsburgh was able to end the half with a 38-27 lead.

The  Cardinals looked to put the Bears away as they opened the 2nd period with an 8-2 start as the lead reached 16 points, 46-30. The Bears got back in the game though, narrowing the deficit down to 11 points, before they went on a 16-2 run that gave them the lead at 67-64 with just 5 minutes left in the game. Nosa Onabor had five points, Dante Viskovich had 4 points and Aaron Armstrong also had 4 points in that stretch. The teams went back and forth over the next few minutes as Potsdam stayed in front. Dante Langley scored for the Bears to make it 74-71 with 1:49 left but the Cardinals got a big 3 pointer from Middleton to tie the game seconds later. Plattsburgh finally regained the lead when Ian Howard scored to make it 76-74. Langly tied it up with another inside bucket, with 24 ticks on the clock, setting the stage for Brandon Johnson's heroics.

This game was not pretty to watch...exciting yes but the officiating left a lot to be desired. 47 fouls called and many of them not necessary... merely disruptive to the flow of the game. Yet there were clearly fouls that were not called that resulted in missed shots or turnovers.  I've seen two of these refs on numerous occasions and it's always the same thing. Blow..blow.. blow the whistle. Potsdam had two players foul out and another had 4 fouls. Plattsburgh had 3 starters with 4 each. Both teams were the recipient of bad calls and I think Potsdam had more reason to complain that Plattsburgh did, but there was a lot of complaining going on from both sides and rightly so.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well and the shooting percentages were fairly similar. Plattsburgh made 8 three pointers to 5 for the Bears. The Bears were 21x29 from the line while the Cardinals were 15x23. Plattsburgh won the rebounding battle by a healthy margin 49 to 34, especially on the offensive end, getting 24 to 13 for Potsdam. 2nd chance points were 17-9 in favor of the Cardinals. Potsdam had 18 turnovers to 15 for Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh was led by Chris Middleton with a game high 17 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

Ian Howard had a game high and career high 18 rebounds, along with 12 points for another double-double. He also had 3 blocks, 3 steals and 1 assist.

Jon Patron had 15 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds, a block and a steal.

Brandon Johnson had 15 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

Isaiah Hill had 8 points and 9 rebounds in 21 minutes of court time.

Adam Jaquish had 7 rebounds, 4 points an assist and a steal in 15 minutes off the bench.

Potsdam was led by Dante Langly with 16 points, 5 rebounds ,3 assists, a block and a steal.

Nosa Onabor had 14 points and 6 rebounds.

Aaron Armstrong had 11 points, 3 assists, and a steal.

Danny Delsol-Lowry had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Serigne Kane had 10 points, 3 rebounds and a block.

#17 Plattsburgh improves to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the YAC. They will host Fredonia on Friday night at 7:30 PM and Buffalo State on Saturday at 4:00 PM.

Potsdam falls to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the YAC. They will host Buffalo State on Friday evening at 7:30 PM

Tonight's games feature the teams currently in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th place and also include Plattsburgh and Brockport, two teams tied for 2nd place. Cortland tied for 2nd and league leader, Oswego are off tonight and will face each other tomorrow.

Oswego, Cortland, Brockport and Plattsburgh will be 4 of the 6 teams that make the SUNYAC Tournament. Will anyone that doesn't believe that please raise their hand......No hands?.....I thought so.

So, those teams in 5th through 10th will need every win they can get from here on out to make the playoffs. Two of them will make the post-season, while the other four will go home. Head to head tiebreaker rules could prove to be pivotal in gaining entrance to the YAC playoffs. The 2 co-featured games of the day are big games for those teams, for that reason.

Geneseo State  @  Oneonta State        7:30 PM            Co-Featured Game of the Day

Both teams coming into this game with losses. Both teams were expecting to be in a better position than they are at this point in the season. Still time to turn things around but I wouldn't have predicted that this pair would have 1 conference win between them after 9 combined games. Geneseo swept the Red Dragons last year. The oddsmakers have made Oneonta a 6 point home favorite. I think they are overdue to win a conference game. Make that way overdue.  Oneonta gets one in the YAC win column as they beat the Knights in a close one 79-75.

Fredonia State  @  #17 Plattsburgh State    7:30 PM

Plattsburgh didn't take care of business on Tuesday night and it almost cost them. The coaching staff probably wasn't too happy with the blown leads and the poor shot selection at different points of the game. They were real happy when that 3 pointer from NBA range+ by Brandon Johnson went down in the last second though. The Cardinals need to pay attention to the job at hand tonight because Fredonia is coming in fresh off a double overtime win against Geneseo. The Blue Devils broke into the win column for the first time this season and would like nothing more than to start a streak, especially at the Cardinals' expense. But winning at home against a 9th place team and trying to beat the defending champ in their house is a devil of a different color. The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh a 35 point favorite in this game and that may be the biggest spread of the year in the conference. I don't know if the Cardinals will beat that spread but I do think they will take care of business. Plattsburgh wins this one 94-67.

Brockport State  @  New Paltz State    7:30 PM

The Golden Eagles are shorthanded as they will be without leading scorer Justin Summers and have already lost starting guard TYler Collin for the season from what I've been hearing. They managed to win on the road against Buffalo State the other night. They should do the same against the Hawks, but upset possibilities could be in the air. The oddsmaker have them listed as a 10 point road favorite, but they don't have an injury report. Still I agree I think Port wins this one. 86-77.

Buffalo State  @  Potsdam State          7:30 PM           Co-Featured Game of the Day

Strange to see Potsdam favored against Buffalo State but the oddsmakers have made them a 3 point favorite against the Bengals. Potsdam has lost the last 20 times they have met Buffalo State and you have to go all the way back to January 19th 2007 to find a Potsdam victory over the Bengals. And that one took place in Buffalo. Hard for me to pick my alma mater with odds like that but Potsdam did look pretty good the other night against my Cardinals. I'll take a flyer on the Bears and see if they can pull it off but it won't surprise me to see Buffalo State win their 21st in a row in this series.  Potsdam 88 Buffalo State 85.

Results from Friday night.

Oneonta State 83 Geneseo State 56

The Red Dragons were down 10-6 early on but a 14-4 run gave them a 20-14 lead with 6:47 to play and they never let the Knights grab another lead.  Up by 11 at the half they opened up with a 9-0 run to start the 2nd and coasted the rest of the way as the lead reached a high of 36 points.

Joseph Bull led Oneonta and captured scoring honors with 26 points. Kevin Mackin had 17 and Harrison Deegan added 13.

Zack Panebianco was the high man for the Knights with 18 points.  Joseph Harclerode II had 11.

Oneonta improves to 6-5 overall and gets in the win column in the SUNYAC with a record of 1-4. They will host Brockport State today at 4:00 PM.

Geneseo drops to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the YAC. They will travel to New Paltz for a 4 PM matchup.

Brockport State 65  New Paltz State 63

This one came right down to the wire and both teams had their chances near the end but Brockport scored with 11 seconds left to go in front 64-63. New Paltz turned it over and Brockport got another point from the line to make the final 65-63. After a back and forth first half the Hawks had the lead for much of the 2nd period. They looked to have the Golden Eagles on the ropes when they went in front by 13 points, at 58-45, with 7:28 to play, after Tristan Wissemann buried a 3 pointer. Brockport is a resilient team though and if you give them an opportunity they will jump all over it. New Paltz missed some huge free throws down the stretch and Port made them pay. Tough loss for the Hawks.

Devante Hagins led a balanced Brockport attack with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Antonio Alvarez had 13 points and Chris Atkinson had 11. Jahidi Wallace had a team high 11 rebounds along with 8 points.

The Hawks Scott Reisert captured scoring honors with 22 points and completed a double-double by grabbing a game high 13 boards.
Tristan Wissemannn had 19 points and 6 rebounds.

Brockport improves to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the YAC. They will face Oneonta today at 4 PM.

New Paltz falls to 6-6 overal and 1-4 in the conference race. They host Geneseo at 4 PM today.

Potsdam State 79  Buffalo State 76

Another close game up for grabs that saw the Bears prevail and get that long sought victory over the Bengals. They are now 1-20 over their last 21 meetings. Much better than the 0-20 that I mentioned in my forecast of the game. I did go with the Bears to win 88-85 and while my totals were a little high, the margin of victory was right on.

Potsdam inched their way in front and slowly built a double digit lead at 23-13 halfway through the first period. The Bengals fought back and got within 3 points at 31-28 with 3:21 to play but Potsdam ended the half on a 10-2 run to go up 41-30 at the break.

The lead stayed between 7 and 12 points through the first 8 minutes of the 2nd half when the Bengals, down 53-45 got a pair of free throws from Sheldon Adams and then after a Bear turnover, a 3 pointer from Adams to trim the lead to 3 points. After the Bears came up empty, the Bengals cashed in two more from the stripe and the game officially entered barnburner status. Back and forth with numerous ties and lead changes, over the next 6 minutes, until the Bengals went in front by 2 possessions for the first time all night on a Dom Grayer 3 pointer which made it 68-62 with 5:39 left to play.

Potsdam used to lose games like this but they came back on a 3 pointer by Nosa Onabor and a layup by Jayquan Thomas to get within 1. The Bengals went back up by 5, Potsdam countered. The Bengals went back up by 5 again and this time Onabor hit a trifecta and when Buff St. came up empty on their trip, Thomas hit another 3 pointer and the Bears were back in front 75-74. The Bengals called timeout and Yosh Bernardez scored inside, to put them back in front by 1. Thomas promptly scored on a layup for Potsdam, to regain the lead  77-76 with a minute left to play. The Bengals came down looking for the lead but turned it over with 38 seconds to when they were called for an offensive foul. The Bears took another timeout and the Bengals looking for a turnover got one with 27 seconds to go. They called timeout to set up the play and took a 3 point attempt that missed with 13 seconds left. They got the offensive rebound but lost the ball and the Bengals had to foul. Potsdam made them both and a final attempt at a three to tie the game was off the mark and the Bears had ended one of their worst streaks in the history of the program.

Dante Langley led all scores with 25 points for the Bears. Jayquan Thomas had 23 points and Nosa Onabor had 11.

Dom Grayer had 15 points to lead the Bengals. Kay Grant had a double-double with 13 points and a game high 12 rebounds. Sheldon Adams had 13 points while Ryniek Holloway had 12 points. Jordan Christopher nearly had a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bears improve to 7-6 overal and 3-3 in conference play. They will host Fredonia today at 4 PM.

The Bengals fall to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the YAC. They visit Plattsburgh State today at 4 PM.

#17 Plattsburgh State 92 Fredonia 71

The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead that reached double digits after 4 minutes and was at 20 points 31-11 with 11:45 left in the half. The Blue Devils were still down by 21 with 3:54 remaining and managed to cut the lead down to just 10 at the break, 46-36.

Plattsburgh just had too many answers though and the Cardinals built the lead back to 20 points with 10:26 left on the clock. The lead would reach 32 before Plattsburgh brought in the reserves and Fredonia managed to narrow the gap to the 21 point difference.

Plattsburgh's Jon Patron led all scorers with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds, also a game high, along with 3 assists.
Chris Middleton had 11 points 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
Brandon Johnson had 10 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal to fill up the stat sheet.
Isaiah Hill had 10 points and 2 boards.

Adam Jacquish had 8 points and 4 boards.
Freshman Taylor Mason had 6 points 3 rebounds and a steal in 11 minutes off the bench.

Kadeem Riddick had 12 points and 3 rebounds.
Abdullah Yusuf had 9 points and 6 rebounds.
Messiah Hill had a team high 7 rebounds and 4 points.

Plattsburgh improves to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The will host Buffalo State today 4 PM.

Jan. 12  Full slate of games on tap this afternoon all starting at 4 PM

Not much time today so just some quick picks.

Geneseo State  @  New Paltz State        4:00 PM

The Knights got blitzed by Oneonta, the Hawks got disappointed by Brockport. Which team will come back to get the W. The point spread has the Hawks favored by a slim 2 points. I think the Hawks get it done as well. New Paltz 76 Geneseo 72.

Buffalo State  @  Plattsburgh State        4:00 PM

The Bengals are looking for a win to end their 6 game losing streak. Plattsburgh, the defending SUNYAC Champs and #17 in the D3hoops Top 25 is the team everyone wants to knock off. So, yes they can expect everyone's best game. Plattsburgh and Buff State have had some intense games over the years but Plattsburgh is currently on a roll going 9-1 in the last 10 meetings. The oddsmakers have the Cardinals favored by a 17 point margin. I'll be surprised if they win by that much. I think Plattsburgh wins but the score is more like 90-80.

Brockport State  @  Oneonta State        4:00 PM

Oneonta is looking to start a win streak in conference play after digging themselves a big hole in the early going. Brockport had had some great escapes over the last several games. The oddsmakers have made the Golden Eagles a 3 point favorite in this one. I like the Red Dragons to win this close contest. Oneonta 77 Brockport 74.

Oswego State  @  Cortland State        4:00 PM   Featured Game of the Day

This is the big game of the day matching 2 of the top 4 teams in the conference. If Cortland wins today we could have 3 teams tied for first at the end of the day, all with 1 loss and Cortland just a half game back .  The Lakers will have something to say about that, of course. The oddsmakers have made Cortland a 5 point favorite in this game. I'm inclined to go with the Red Dragons here but I think it might be a little closer. Cortland wins by an 82-79 final score.

Fredonia State  @  Potsdam State        4:00 PM

The Bears are in playoff contention and need to take care of business today to stay there. The oddsmakers have made Potsdam a 17 point favorite in this one. That seems like a few too many.  I like the Bears to win by a final score of 82-70.

AllStar

New Paltz 2-4, 7-6
Oneonta 1-5, 6-6
