Jan. 26   Full slate of games today as all 10 teams are in action.

Geneseo State  @  Plattsburgh State        4:00 PM

The Cardinals are coming off a big high as they beat Brockport last night to avenge an earlier loss to the Golden Eagles. The Knights got handled by Potsdam, so they will be looking to salvage their weekend trip with a win. Plattsburgh leads this series 9-3 over the last 12 games and the oddsmakers have the Cardinals listed as a 16 point favorite in this one. Plattsburgh can't afford another loss if they have any hope for the top seed.  Plattsburgh wins this one by a final of 87-65.

Brockport State  @  Potsdam State         4:00 PM  Co Featured Game of the Day

Brockport has a very good team. They will be very good next year as well as they are a young team. The same can be said of the Bears. Potsdam already has several upsets this season (if you wanna call them that) with the wins over Cortland and Oneonta. Then there's the narrow 2 point loss to Oswego on the road this past Tuesday. I wouldn't call Potsdam a big underdog in this one and neither do the oddsmakers as they have made the Golden Eagles a slim 3 point favorite. I'd like to pick my Alma Mater to win this game and hope that they do, but Brockport is really good and I think they come away with a W here. Golden Eagles defensive pressure will be the Bears undoing. Brockport 81  Potsdam 75

Buffalo State  @  Oswego State                4:00 PM

The Bengals got a taste of victory on Tuesday and then went from the frying pan into the fire as they traveled to Cortland and Oswego this weekend. The first part of the weekend didn't work out very well, as they took it on the chin from Cortland. As a Plattsburgh Cardinal supporter I'm sure hoping this day turns out different for them. The Lakers keep marching on and still have that comfortable 3 game lead in the YAC. The oddsmakers have them listed as a 12 point favorite. I think that's too many but it will take a solid effort by the Bengals to pull off the upset over an Oswego team that's playing very good right now. Oswego wins this one 83-74.

New Paltz State  @  Oneonta State                4:00 PM  Co-Featured Game of the Day

This one is a battle for the 6th and final playoff spot. Oneonta, having lost the earlier game to the Hawks, needs a win here in case tiebreakers come into play down the road. With a loss they will also fall 2 games behind the Hawks instead of being tied with them, so a win today is imperative. Both teams coming off 2 conference wins over the same teams last weekend and looking for 3 game conference win streaks. Oneonta has been listed as a 7 point home favorite but I think the game may be a bit closer than that. Oneonta 78 New Paltz 74.

Fredonia State  @  Cortland State                4:00 PM

Cortland has moved into a tie for the 2nd spot with Plattsburgh, but actually owns the tiebreaker over Plattsburgh at the present time. They won't stumble today facing the Blue Devils. The Red Dragons are listed as 23 point favorites. I think they win by a few more.         Cortland 93 Fredonia 68.

Anyone recall bigger swing than in Friday's Buff St. at Cortland match? Talk about momentum swings.

Bengals go from 19 down in early moments of the second half to take one point lead eight minutes later ....  and fall by 18!!! Sharpshooter N. Bonura with 33 RDragon points -- 20 by halftime, J. Cooper 31 including slew of late-game FTs. Corts 21x23 from the stripe

Potsdam defeated the Brockport Golden Eagles 78-71 to remain unbeaten at home and move into 4th place in the SUNYAC standings at 7-4. The Bears have beaten all of the teams below them in the standings at least once, and their three remaining home games are against #1 Oswego, #2 Plattsburgh, and #3 Cortland [who the Bears beat at Corey 8 days ago].

Bears had 5 double figure scorers, led by Dante Langley who came off the bench to score 21 pts and grab 8 rebounds.  Nosa Onabor had 18 points and 15 rebounds to go with his 28 points and 7 rebounds the night before vs. Geneseo.

Justin Summers led the Eagles with 20 points and 8 rebounds

Both teams shot poorly, Potsdam at 37 percent, Brockport at 34 percent.  Bears outrebounded Brockport 54-37, and shot 23x25 from the charity stripe.

Bears now 11-7 on the season, matching their win total from last season with at least 7 games remaining.

Bears host the #2 Plattsburgh Cardinals on Tuesday night at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.  Last meeting was decided on a buzzer beater at Plattsburgh.

Friday night recap.

Plattsburgh State 88  Brockport  82

Another classic battle between these two rivals. Always worth the price of admission to see this pair go at each other. What wasn't worth the price of admission was 3 zebras (actually two, as one was ok) blowing their whistles all night lonnnngg. It is so frustrating to see them interrupt the flow of the game over bad calls and ticky tack fouls that just left you shaking your head wondering what game these guys were watching. Both coaches gave them an earful and both coaches had ample reason to do so. 53 fouls were called in the game which is way too many blown whistles. You can call a foul every 10 seconds if you want to and these guys were certainly giving that scenario a shot. Hope they stay out of our region for the rest of this season.

When the players did get a chance to show their stuff it was a pretty darned good basketball game. Brockport took the early lead behind the hot hand of Antonio Alvarez who scored 11 points in a row for Brockport. He drained a jumper and after Plattsburgh went up 5-4 he  buried 3 bombs on 3 successive trips down the court all from long range. The Cardinals were quickly down 13-5 but came back with an 11-2 run of their own to take a 16-15 lead, fueled by 7 points from Jon Patron. 8 ties and 8 lead changs would complete the rest of the period with neither team getting any daylight from the other. They ended the half deadlocked at 41 and you just knew that was just a preview of what was coming.

This time the Cardinals struck first with an 11-4 burst and managed to go in front by 7 points at 52-45 with 16:49 left to play. It was their biggest lead so far and it didn't last long. The Golden Eagles cut it to 1 but couldn't get the go ahead bucket and Plattsburgh continued to hold the upper hand for the next 10 minutes as the lead shifted between 1 and 7 points. Still ahead by 7 at 68-61 with 11 minutes to play Brockport applied more pressure and the Cardinals didn't respond well at all, as they committed 4 turnovers in a span of
4 minutes and the Golden Eagles scored off 3 of those miscues and tied the game at 72 with 6:36 remaining. Plattsburgh called a time out to regroup and promptly turned the ball over again. This time Brockport came up empty and Plattsburgh retook the lead when Ian Howard was fouled and made 1 of 2 from the line. Brockport then went to the line but missed the front end of a 1&1. PLattsburgh went back to the line and Patron made 1 of 2. Plattsburgh rebounded the missed free throw and after a layup by Patron didn't go down, Chris Middleton grabbed the offensive rebound and got the putback to give Plattsburgh a 4 point lead. Port came up empty again and Brandon Johnson made them pay with a 3 pointer that boosted the lead to 7. Again Brockport failed to score and the Cardinals' Travis Cox was fouled. He made a pair of free throws to give Plattsburgh their largest lead of the night at 81-72 with 3:51 on the clock. The resilient Golden Eagles managed to stay alive when a 3 pointer by Devante Hagins made it a single possession game at 85-82 with 1:10  remaining. Brockport took a timeout to set their defense and sure enough created the needed turnover without having to put the Cardinals on the line. They came down and fired up the 3 ball looking for the equalizer. They missed it but got the offensive rebound, took another 3 pointer, missed that one and got another offensive rebound. This time they turned it over as Middleton stole the ball and was fouled with 42 seconds left. He made both free throws to make it a two possession game again, and that was the ballgame. Brockport missed another 3 point attempt, fouled again and the Cards got another point from the line.

I predicted this game was going to be an 85-81 Cardinal win. I was only a few points off. It would have been 85-82 without the 3 fouls shots in the last few seconds. I have to hang my hat on something this weekend after some surprising results that I didn't see coming, so I'm taking this game and running with it.  ;D

Jon Patron had a big game as he led all scorers with 34 points and all rebounders with 14 boards to post his 10 double-double of the season. He also added 3 assists.
Brandon Johnson had 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block.
Chris Middleton had 13 points and just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds.
Ian Howard had 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.

Devante Hagins led Brockport with 19 points and 12 rebounds which gave him a double-double of his own. He added 3 blocks, 3 steals, and 2 assists.
Antonio Alvarez had 16 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.
Davonte Jones had 13 points, 6 assists, 2 steals and 1 rebound in 18 minutes off the bench.
Justin Summers had 12 points and came up 1 rebound short of another double-double as he only had 9 boards.

Plattsburgh outshot Brockport from the field by a small margin and went 8x13 from downtown. THe Golden Eagles had a much lower percentage from long range than the Cards did but they made 11 3's in 26 attempts. Plattsburgh was 32x45 from the line while Brockport was 21x29 in that area. The Cardinals did win the boards as they grabbed 46 rebounds to only 32 for Port. Turnovers were close as Plattsburgh had 21 giveaways to 19 for Brockport.

Plattsburgh is now 13-4 with that win and 7-3 in the conference. Brockport is 10-6 overall and 6-3 in the SUNYAC>

Jon Patron had 2 big games this past weekend and was rewarded with the SUNYAC Player of the Week award. It's the 2nd time Jon received the weekly award this year, having won it back in December. Plattsburgh State players have won the award 4 times this season as Brandon Johnson and Ian Howard have both also been selected as the Player of the Week.

In addition to posting his 11th double-double of the season, Jon has now scored 1728 points and needs just 7 points to break the Plattsburgh State career points record of 1734 currently held by former player and 2 time All American, Anthony Williams. He has already broken the career record for field goals with 658 and counting.

Jon leads the SUNYAC in scoring with 412 points (22.9 ppg) and also in rebounds with 193 (10.7rpg).

Congratulations to Jon for this honor and the many honors yet to come.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

JONATHAN PATRON, MBKB, AOW, PLATTSBURGH

Jan 28, 2019
Patron averaged 28 points and 14.5 rebounds per game as the Plattsburgh State Men's basketball team went 2-0 over the weekend. The Cardinals' 88-82 win over Brockport was led by Patron's season high 34 points. He as well grabbed 14 rebounds and added 3 assists. Patron shot exceptionally well in this game posting a 56.3% in field goals, 80% from behind the arc and went 12-18 in free throws.  On Saturday, the senior forward added to his double-double count, the 11th of his season, with 22 points and 15 rebounds in their 78-64 win over Geneseo.

Jan. 29    For the 2nd time this year we have a full schedule on a Tuesday night, with all 10 teams in action.

Not much time so just some quick picks today. Snow is coming down pretty good. Hope the teams that are traveling have safe trips. I was headed over to Potsdam to take in that game as I always do but the snowstorm has cancelled that trip. Will be hoping for a good stream from the Bears.

Plattsburgh State  @  Potsdam State        7:30 PM        Co-Featured Game of the Night

The Cardinals need to keep winning in hopes of a first round bye. They still have an outside chance of hosting the Final Four. The Bears need to keep winning in hopes of a first round bye. Yeah that's right, the lowly Potsdam Bears, of years past, could end up in 2nd place (First place seems like a reach at this point, being 4 games back with 7 to play). I'll be happy if my Alma Mater makes the playoffs but the possibility to secure a home playoff game also exists.

The oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a 5 point choice here, which has to be the least number of points they've been favored by, against Potsdam, in the last 6 years or longer. That's because the Bears took Plattsburgh right down to the final buzzer in Plattsburgh 3 weeks ago. The Bears could very well win this game as they have, like Plattsburgh, went undefeated so far in conference home games. They are both 6-0 at home. I think the Cardinals will come away with the win tonight and cover the spread. Plattsburgh 86 Potsdam 80.

Oneonta State  @  Cortland State                7:30 PM  Co-Featured Game of the Night

The Cortland Red Dragons are in the same position as Plattsburgh with identical records. They handled Oneonta by 20 points in their matchup 3 weeks ago when they were the visiting team. Tonight they are home in Corey Gym and the point spread has Cortland favored by 7 points. They won't want to fall behind Plattsburgh and they would probably like to see Oneonta miss the playoffs altogether, after those Red Dragons beat Cortland in the YAC tournament, despite losing to them twice last year during the regular season.

Oneonta is in desperation mode at this point. They are 2 full games behind the 6th and final playoff position and to make matters worse, they have lost twice to New Paltz the team they need to beat to get there. So that's essentially a 3 game deficit they have to make up with 8 games to play. It will be hard enough to do that, another loss may be too much too overcome. I don't see Oneonta getting lucky tonight, although as a Cardinal fan I'll be rooting hard for them to knock off Cortland. Cortland wins this one 82-73

Buffalo State  @  Geneseo State                7:30 PM

Two teams that would like the season to be starting right now. Both loaded with young players but suffering the growing pains that comes with youth. Next year will be a different story. The oddsmakers have made the Bengals a 4 point road favorite here but the Knights are pretty disciplined and run their plays well. Still the Bengals have won their 2 YAC games on the road and their star crossed season deserves a few breaks. I think they catch one here. Buffalo State 77 Geneseo 73.

Fredonia State  @  Brockport State                7:30 PM

The Blue Devils are another team who is playing for next season and Coach Seymore is auditioning the entire cast. 12 different players have started a game and 10 players are getting double digit minutes. Brockport is reeling from a lost weekend that dropped them from 2nd place to 5th place. The Golden Eagles have been hit with more than their share of injuries this year and when they are healthy they are as good as any team in the league. They will be out for blood tonight. It's a bad time to roll into Port. Oddsmakers have them listed as a 22 point favorite. I think they win by more. Brockport 87 Fredonia 61.

Oswego State  @  New Paltz State                 7:30 PM

The Lakers are on cruise control as they continue to march toward the top seed. There will be some bumps in the road as they have to play the other 5 teams currently in playoff position behind them and 4 of those 5 games are on the road. We all know how brutal road games in the YAC can be. The Hawks have a solid lead in the race for the final playoff spot. I don't think they can move up the ladder any higher, but New Paltz will be gunning for the upset, especially since Brockport is the team directly in front of them. Playing in Hawk Hall will give them an edge, but neither the oddsmakers or this prestidigitator think that the Hawks can turn that advantage into a W. The point spread is a double digit 10 points but I think the Lakers win by more. Oswego State 85-67

The new D3hoops Top 25 was posted last night and Oswego State and Plattsburgh State both sit just outside the Top 25 in the Others Receiving Votes category.

Oswego State is #26 with 47 points.   Last week they were #32 with 18 points.

Plattsburgh State is #27 with 29 points. Last week they were #27 with 42 points.  I think the Lakers and Cards just swapped a few points.

Rochester is #28 with 21 points. Last week they were ranked in the Top 25 at #21 with 117 points. They lost to Brandeis and dropped out.

No other East team is getting points.
