Plattsburgh 87 Fredonia 70

I had Plattsburgh winning 89-67 so I was close on the total and also my prediction that they wouldn't win by 25. The Cardinal coaching staff had a lot to do with that one though as Plattsburgh broke on top quickly by jumping out to a 27-4 lead after 10 minutes of play. The 2nd and 3rd string players got early playing time today, as they saw action in both halves. Plattsburgh had a 24 point lead at 40-16 with 4:38 left in the half. The Blue Devils cut the lead to 17 at the break as they trailed 50-33.

Fredonia got as close as they would get when they opened the 2nd frame outscoring Plattsburgh by an 8-2 margin to cut the lead to 11 points at 52-41 but the Cardinals went back to their bread and butter guy Jon Patron, and he scored 12 points to open the lead back up to 17 at 67-50. Plattsburgh's Nick DeAngelis then scored inside with a layup and then drained one from downtown to make it 72-50 and the Cards coasted to the finish line.

Patron made his case for a 2nd straight Player of the Week award as he posted his 13th double-double of the season as he captured both scoring honors with 31 points and rebounding honors with 15 boards. He had 20 points and 15 boards on Tuesday at Potsdam. He had 3 other games this year where he scored double figures of 27, 23, and 16 points and had 9 rebounds in all 3 of those games or he would have 16 double-doubles. He will have one more game to impress the SUNYAC award committee as the Cardinals play Buffalo State on Sunday at 2:00 PM.

Adam Jaquish also had a double-double, the first one of his Plattsburgh State career as he tied his career high with 11 points and set a new career high with 12 rebounds.

Nick DeAngelis had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Chris Middleton had 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Freshman Taylor Mason had 7 points and 7 rebounds.

Fredonia was led by Bediako Nyasa with 14 points as he was 3 for 6 from long distance.

De'Quan Smith had 13 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and a block.

Colden George had 10 points in 18 minutes off the bench.

Plattsburgh ups their record to 16-4 overall and 10-3 in the SUNYAC. They are in sole possession of 2nd place and will complete their weekend trip to Western New York when they take on Buffalo State on Super Bowl Sunday at 2:00 PM in the Queen City. This is the game originally scheduled for Friday evening.

Fredonia drops to 2-18 overall and 1-12 in the YAC as the rebuilding season continues. They will host Potsdam State later today also at 2:00 PM.

Cortland 72 Oswego 67

The Red Dragons avenged an earlier loss to the Lakers and in the process tightened up the race for the regular season title just a little. Oswego State still has a commanding 2 game lead over Plattsburgh and a 3 game lead over Cortland with just 5 games left to play, but four of Oswego's five remaining games are on the road. Plus the Lakers have to play 2nd place Plattsburgh, 4th place Brockport and 5th place Potsdam among those road games.

My crystal ball had Cortland winning this game 77-74 so I was fairly close to the actual score. Oswego had the early lead for the first 10 minutes keeping the Red Dragons at bay with layups by Tyler Pierre or Alan Durutovic. They also drained a few from long distance to keep the lead between 5 and 8 points. Still down 21-14 Cortland went on a mini run pf 12-2 fueled by 7 points from Nicky Bonura to take a 26-23 lead. It was the first lead change of the game and came with 7 minutes left in the period. Five more would follow before the first half ended as the Lakers managed to stay on top by a 35-33 score when the horn blew.

The 2nd half  opened with 5 ties and 4 lead changes over the first 6:15 of play. The Lakers were down 42-41 when they got a pair of  free throws from Brandan Gartland when he made 2 trips to the line and went 1 of 2 both times. The Red Dragons came up empty and once again Tyler Pierre scored inside. After Cortland scored with 2 free throws Pierre got loose again, this time for a dunk. Cortland missed on their end and Pierre piled on with another layup to give Oswego the lead at 49-44 with 12 minutes left.  Justin Cooper and Nicky Bonura then combined for 13 points (9 by Cooper) and Cortland surged in front by a 57-51 score. The Lakers got a 3 pointer from Liam Sanborn but Cortland answered with a layup from Kenny Charles. Oswego missed their next 5 shots and Cortland went 3 for 6 but 2 of those baskets were from long distance and the score was now 67-54 and time was getting short with just 4:00 left in the game. The Lakers got as close as 5 points on 2 occasions but Cortland went 5x7 from the line down the stretch to salt this one away.

Nicky Bonura led Cortland and captured scoring honors with 22 points and 4 rebounds.

Justin Cooper had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a block.

Kenny Charles had 15 points, 1 assist and a block.

Tyler Pierre was the high man for Oswego with 21 points and was the leading rebounder with 15 boards to get another double-double. He added 2 assists and 2 blocks.

Liam Sanborn had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.

Joe Sullivan had 11 points and 6 rebounds.

Quinn Carey had 9 points and 5 boards.

Cortland outshot the Lakers in all 3 areas by slight margins. Oswego had a sizable difference on the boards with the Lakers grabbing 41 rebounds to 27 for Cortland. Cortland only had 6 turnovers to 10 for Oswego.

Cortland remains in 3rd place with a 9-4 SUNYAC record. They are 15-5 overall. They will be back in action next Friday when they travel North for a rematch with Plattsburgh at 7:30 PM.

Oswego drops to 17-3 overall and 12-1 in the YAC. They will follow their travel partner North to take on Potsdam on Friday night at 7:30 PM

Geneseo 62 New Paltz 58

Another close game that came down to the wire. I had the Knights winning this game by 4 points, 75-71. My totals were a little high but the MOV was right on the money.

It took the Knights a long time time to get a lead in this game as the Hawks came out of the gate and jumped in front from the opening whistle. They led throughout the entire first half by as many as 9 points on several occasions and went into halftime up 32-27

Geneseo still trailed for the first 5 minutes of the 2nd stanza but after 25 minutes of being the trailer they finally got a lead, when a 7-0 burst put them in front 36-33, with 15 minutes left to play. Another 10-3 run gave them a 46-36 lead and they never let New Paltz get in front again. The Hawks put steady pressure on the Knights as they cut the lead to 2 points several times but couldn't come up with the equalizer when it counted. The Knights were also very good from the line when they needed to be, as they hit 9 of 10 foul shots down the stretch.

The Knights' Terrance Nichols led all scorers with 23 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist.
Alex Merhige had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Zack Panebianco had 10 points and 2 assists.

The Hawks got 12 points from Tristan Wissemann, who also had 5 rebounds.
Cory Garcia had 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Jake Passaretti had 10 points and 3 assists
Scott Reisert had 9 rebounds, 7 points, 3 blocks, 2 steals and 1 assist.

Geneseo improves to 6-14 overall and 3-10 in the YAC. They will travel to Buffalo State on Tuesday to face the Bengals at 7:30 PM.

New Paltz falls to 11-9 overall and 6-7 in the SUNYAC They remain in the 6th and final playoff spot as Oneonta failed to gain any ground with their loss to Brockport on Saturday.

Feb. 3   Two games on tap today

Potsdam State  @  Fredonia State                2:00 PM[/b]

No one should have to play a game on Super Bowl Sunday. It 's not all that bad for the home teams but it sucks for the guys that have to get on the bus and travel back home for 6 hours. It will really be bad if they have to do that with a loss as well.

Potsdam is holding down the 5th playoff spot and would like to move up the ladder. They would love to have a home playoff game for their fans who haven't experienced a playoff game of any kind for a long time. The oddsmakers have made them a 15 point favorite in this game which seems like a lot for a team that only won the previous matchup in Potsdam by 3 points. I think the Bears will win this game but only by a score of 78-68.

Plattsburgh State  @  Buffalo State        2:00 PM

The Cardinals need to be mindful of the fact that this Buffalo State is not really a team with a 6-13 record. If they don't bring their A game today they could hand Oswego the regular season crown. The Bengals have made today's game their Super Bowl because the Cardinals are the defending champs. It will ease the pain of a disappointing season. And there's always the outside chance they could still make the playoffs, but it will most likely mean they have to run the table. The oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a 7 point favorite. Plattsburgh could only win by a last second 2 pointer in Plattsburgh last month, but I think the Cardinals win this one 91-85.

Plattsburgh's Jon Patron was selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the 2nd week in a row. It was the 3rd time he has won the award this season. Jon also set the new standard for career points by a Cardinal as he broke two time All American Anthony Williams' 11 year old record of 1734 points in the Cardinals win at Potsdam last Tuesday. I'm hopeful he may be named to the D3hoops Team of the Week when it's released.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

"CORTLAND, N.Y. - After a stellar performance last week, Plattsburgh senior Jonathan Patron (Huntington, N.Y.) earns the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row.

Patron averaged 30.7 points per game, 13.3 rebounds per game, and shot 53.8% in field goals as the Cardinals went 3-0 on the road against Potsdam, Fredonia, and Buffalo State. On Tuesday, Patron had a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds in their 77-75 overtime victory against Potsdam. He recorded another double-double on Friday netting 31 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in Plattsburgh's 87-70 win over Fredonia. To cap off the week, Patron matched his career-high of 41 points and had 10 rebounds for his 14th double-double of the season during the team's 91-77 triumph over Buffalo State."

During Plattsburgh's win on Tuesday over Potsdam, Jonathan Patron broke the program's career points record that was held by Anthony Williams (2004-2008). Patron had 1728 points coming in to the game and his 20 point game put him over the previous record of 1734. The Plattsburgh senior continues to lead the SUNYAC in points and rebounds.

The week #9  D3hoops Top 25 poll was released Monday night and Plattsburgh State has re-entered the poll as they check in at #23 with 46 points. Last week they were just outside the Top 25 at #27 in the "Others Receiving Votes" category with 29 points. The Cardinals are on a current 5 game winning streak and this weekend will face 2 of the 3 conference rivals that they lost to on the road 3 weeks ago, Cortland State and Oswego State.

Oswego State was also just outside the Top 25 last week in the #26 spot in the ORV category with 47 points. They suffered their first loss in the conference to Cortland and are now in the 28th spot in the ORV category with 26 points. Their loss was Plattsburgh's gain, I guess.

Rochester also in the ORV category at #27 with 36 points. Last week they were #28 with 21 points.

No other East Region team is listed.

Jon Patron was named to the D3hoops Team of the Week for the outstanding week he had in the Cardinals' 3-0 week they just finished. It marked the 2nd time this season that Jon garnered the D3hoops weekly award and he did so with even better stats then he had the first time that he won the award for week #3 in early December. He averaged 27 ppg and 13 rpg while shooting 52% from the field in week 3. This past week he averaged 31 ppg and 13 rpg while shooting 54% from the field.

It also marked the 3rd time a Plattsburgh State player got the D3hoops award this season as Brandon Johnson made the TOTW in week #1 back on November 19th

Here's the write up from the D3 hoops website and the link to the complete TOTW:

Jonathan Patron
Patron averaged 31 points per game, 13 rebounds per game, and shot 54% from the field in the Plattsburgh State men's basketball 3-0 road game sweep this past week. On Tuesday, Patron had 20 points and 15 rebounds in their 77-75 overtime win over Potsdam. On Saturday, Patron recorded 31 points and 15 rebounds in the Cardinals 87-70 victory over Fredonia. On Sunday, Patron matched his career high of 41 points and had 10 rebounds for his 14th double-double of the season in their 91-77 triumph over Buffalo State.

Feb. 5   Two games scheduled for today

Geneseo State  @  Buffalo State        7:30 PM

The Knights got mauled on their home court by the Bengals just 1 week ago. It looks like they could be in for more of the same. The Bengals need to run the table if they have any hope of grabbing the final playoff spot. Geneseo, is still not eliminated from the playoffs, and would also need to win their remaining games, but their path is much tougher with games against Cortland, Oswego and 2 more against Brockport. They are basically playing for pride at this point and to gain experience for next year. The oddsmaker have made Buffalo State 8 point home favorites in this one. I think the Bengals win it 86-74.

Brockport State  @  Fredonia State        7:30 PM

Brockport needs to take care of business here to keep alive their hopes of a home playoff game. A first round bye is still possible but they would need a lot of things to break in their favor. I don't see that happening. Third or fourth seed is where they should end up but they could lose that position with a loss today or in the next 2 games. The Blue Devils, like Geneseo, are also playing for next year as they have been eliminated from the playoffs, but they would love to be a spoiler and take down one of the upper level teams. It would make their season.  The point spread has Brockport favored by 17 points. They won at home a week ago against the Blue Devils by 57. I don't think it will be a repeat of that proportion but it won't be pretty. Brockport 94 Fredonia 62.

All-Time

It's coming down to the wire.
Looks like 4 teams trying to get the final 2 playoff spots.
As always the SUNYAC never disappoints.
The best D3 conference in the country.
Let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

thebear

I think it's more like 5 or 6 teams shooting for the 3-6 seeds.

Cortland has a tough remaining schedule, @Plattsburgh, @Potsdam, New Paltz, @Genny, @'port, all but Genny still in the mix.

'port has the easiest remaining schedule, with Freddy and Genny twice, but then end up with Oswego and Cortland

Buff State is one loss away from elimination, and losing to Genny at the half tonight.

New Paltz and Oneonta have favorable remaining schedules, - bottom dwelling Buff State and Fredonia, but also tough & hungry opponents Potsdam, Plattsburgh, & @ Oswego [ONE]/@Cortland [NP]on what looks like senior night for Oswego and Cortland.

Potsdam and Plattsburgh host Oswego and Cortland on senior weekend, and then trek to the Catskills to close out the season.  All those games have meaning for seeds.

No easy out for the Lakers either, as they have 4 of their last 5 on the road, and 4 of 5 against teams fighting for playoff spots.

Going down to the wire.
