Dec. 15                Two games on the schedule today as the Holiday Tournaments continue.

St. Joseph's (Maine)  vs  Brockport State     2:00 PM   Brockport's  Mauro Panaggio Tournament @ Daytona Beach, FL

The  Monks of St. Joe's are just 2-5 coming into this game and giving up over 90 points a game. They have committed 22 turnovers a game in those 5 losses. The Golden Eagles constant pressure should keep those numbers at that level or higher.

Brockport has put together a solid 5 game winning streak since their opening loss and are favored by 11 points in this game. I think they win by a few more. Brockport 94 St. Joseph's 78.

Cortland State  vs  Eastern University   7:00 PM   @ Miami Shores, Florida       HOOPMIA D3 HOLIDAY SHOOTOUT

Eastern could pose some problems for Cortland as they start a pair of 6'8" forwards, a 6'4" forward and bring in perhaps their best big man, a 6'6" 5th year player off the bench. Their record is only 4-4 but they have been dealing with some injuries and if healthy would be better than that record suggests.

Cortland has been up and down. A close win over Purchase on a last second 3 pointer was followed by a close loss to rival Ithaca, when the Red Dragons blew a 6 point lead and scored just a single point in the final 5 minutes of that game. Last weekend another close win over Geneseo (Cortland trailed 63-62 with under 2 minutes to play) was followed by a 13 point loss to Brockport. New additions  Austin Grunder, the reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week, and Eric Edwards have been bright spots for Cortland. It will be interesting to see how they fare against the big men of Eastern. Grunder is leading the nation in rebounding with 18.3 rpg and he's averaging 23 ppg as well. Edwards' numbers are 18 ppg and 6 rpg.

The oddsmakers have favored Cortland by 4 points in this one. Should be a close one. I'll take Cortland to win 77-72.

I must be on Bizarro World. Brought up the Brockort-St. Joe's game on live stats. It showed the game was over and Brockport lost 81-80. Had Justin Summers with 0 points and 2 rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench. No Jahidi Wallace in the game at all.

I couldn't believe my eyes. How could Port lose to this team? Well if Summers only played 10 minutes and didn't score and Wallace didn't play at all. I suppose it's possible but I think Brockport could beat this team even without those two guys. The bench wouldn't be as long but they would still get the W.

I went to the D3hoops scoreboard and there it was Brockport 80 St. Joe's 81. Game over. How is this possible...the game wasn't supposed to start until 2 PM and it's only 2:02 PM?

Finally went to the Brockport website to verify the start time. Yep 2:00 PM start. They had a live stats link there so I clicked on it.  Up popped the stats showing Brockport up 7-3.  I'm looking at stats from a game just starting...yet I have another window open showing the same two teams with the game over and all the same players with point totals and minutes.

In fact here's the box score to show I really am on Bizarro World.

Turns out this is the box score for the first game between St John Fisher and Wooster which was won by Wooster 81-80. ;D

Somehow they have the players from both teams in the box score. Just checked the D3hoops scoreboard and they have erased the Brockport score. I've left Bizzaro World and am back home on planet Earth...Thank God. 8-)

Brockport leads St. Joseph's (Maine) 41-34 at the half.

After getting the Bejesus scared outta me with a fake news score, I am happy to report the Golden Eagles are in front by 7 at the break.

Justin Summers has been unstoppable for Brockport. He is well on his way to another double-double as he poured in 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Jahidi Wallace has 11 points and 5 rebounds. Tyler Collins with 5 points and 2 assistrs.

Port was up by as many as 13 on several occasions but St. Joe's has had a barrage of 3 pointers to keep it as close as it is. The Monks have made 8 threes, 4 two point baskets and 2 free throws to get to their 34 points.

St Joe's is led by Griffin Foley with 14 points. He has 3 of the Monks' buckets from long distance. Jack Casale has 11 points and 3 rebounds.

#9454
Brockport State  83  St Joseph's (Maine)  73

Brockport led this game from start to finish and had double digit leads for a good portion of the game. At different points in both halves St. Joe's would bunch together a few three pointers and cut the deficit to single digits. Every time they did Brockport would respond in a matter of seconds usually to re-establish a 10 to 15 point lead again. With less than 3 minutes played in the 2nd half Brockport had increased their 7 point halftime lead to 15 points at 51-36. The Monks got within 7 and Port went back up by 11. St. Joe'scut it to 6, Brockport went ahead by 15.  Still up by 16 at 74-58 with 6:37 to play, Brockport got a little sloppy and the Monks hit a flurry of trifectas to get as close as a two possession game at 79-73 with 2:03 to play. The Golden Eagles shut them out the rest of the way to win by 10 points.

St Joe's hit 15 three pointers (15x31) to keep this game from being a blowout. As I mentioned in my preview the Monks commit a lot of turnovers and Brockport would be able to take advantage of that. And they did..... forcing the Monks into 28 turnovers that resulted in 30 points for the Golden Eagles. Port won the battle of the boards 42-34. Shooting percentages were fairly even as were free throws. Port only attempted 12 shots from downtown and made 6 of them.

Brockport
Justin Summers got his double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds. I think he had more than 10 boards but he did capture scoring honors for the game and led Brockport in rebounds.

Tyler Collins had 16 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds, a block and a steal.

Jahidi Wallace had 13 points and 7 reounds.

Montgomery Stroman had 12 points off the bench hitting 4 big three pointers in 6 attempts. He also led the team with 4 steals.

Devante Hagins had 5 points and 5 boards in 13 minutes off the bench.

Danny Ashley had 4 points, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 rebounds.

St Joe's
Jack Casale led the Monks with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and a steal.

Griffin Foley had 15 points and 2 rebounds.

Nicholas Curtis  had 14 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds.

Drew Shea had 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench.

Joseph Nuttall won rebounding honors with 12 boards, 7 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Brockport State will meet Wooster College in the Championship of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM.

St John Fisher lost an 81-80 decision to Wooster College in an earlier game on Sunday. They had a 78-73 lead and the ball with 34 seconds to go and couldn't hang onto the lead.  So those Cardinals (Fisher) will play St Joseph's in the consolation game at 12 noon.

Brockport State improves to 6-1 overall (2-0 SUNYAC) It was nice to watch this game and have an announcer, an on screen scoreboard with the time, a decent cameraman and live stats that worked just fine. All the things that York College did not have in their tournament yesterday. Somebody at that school needs to step up and fix things. Why bother to have an online presence if you are going to do it so poorly?

Cortland State 71    Eastern University 62

Nice win by the Red Dragons to come from 60-56 behind with 4:52 left in the game and only allow the Eagles 2 points the rest of the way. Cortland gets a 3 pointer from Ryan Schmadel to draw within a point and calls a timeout. Eastern misses on their end and Cortland's Austin Grunder gets the rebound. The Red Dragons have a chance to take the lead but this time Schmadel misses from long range. No problem, Grunder grabs his 12th rebound to reset the offense. Just 11 seconds later AJ Lawton drains a threeball and Cortland is in front 62-60. Eastern attempts to match Lawton's shot but again is off the mark. Cortland comes down, Grunder is fouled and he makes 1 of 2, but Schmadel grabs the rebound off the missed free throw and Lawton hits his 2nd bomb in a 60 second span to put the Red Dragons up 66 to 60 with 2:45 to go. The Eagles could never get it back to a 1 possession game after that and Cortland went 5 of 6 from the line to put this one on ice. Cortland ends the game on a 15-2 run.

I had Cortland winning this one by a 77-72 score and wondered how the Red Dragons would do against the height advantage posed by Eastern's big men. I thought they would do well enough to get the W and they sure did.

Cortland's two big guys Austin Grunder and Eric Edwards had 48 points and 22 rebounds between them. Eastern's 2 starting forwards were 6'8", and 6'6" and they brought in 6'8" and 6'4" guys off the bench. Those 4 guys combined to score 38 points and grab 19 rebounds, so Cortland's pair more than held their own.

Eastern shot 50% from the field to 48% for Cortland but the Red Dragons hit the long ball for 44% (11x25) while the Eagles were only 5x16 from distance. Cortland was also better at the line going 12x20 to only 1x5 for Eastern. Cortland won the rebounding war 33 to 26 but had a few more turnpvers than the Eagles 16 to 13.

Cortland
Austin Grunder is in the conversation for SUNYAC Player of the Year. The Red Dragon's new arrival has played in 5 games and has a double-double in every one of them. On Sunday he had 28 points and 15 rebounds, both game highs. He was 10x14 from the field and 3x5 from long distance. He still leads the nation in rebounding with 17.6 rpg. He also moved into  the Top 20 in points with a 24 ppg average. I think he may be high on the list of double-doubles as well, once Cortland plays a few more games. His 5 double-doubles puts him on the first page of the stat leaders where most of those guys have played 8 to 10 games.

Eric Edwards had 20 points and 7 rebounds. He was 7x16 from the field and also 3x5 from long range.

AJ Lawton had a career high 11 points and was also 3x5 from behind the arc.

Eastern
Victor Pena had 11 points and 5 rebounds.

William Blet had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Clifton Adams had 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Cortland improves to 3-2 overall (1-1 YAC) and will play in Miami again on Tuesday against Gwynedd Mercy at 6:00 PM.

Dec. 16                 Just a single game on tap today.

Wooster College vs Brockport St.  2:00 PM    Championship Game   Mauro Panaggio Tournament @ Daytona Beach, FL

This should be a very good game. Wish i was there to see it. Both teams come into this matchup with identical 6-1 records and both are tied for first place in their respective conferences. They have 1 opponent in common...Medaille College and they both defeated the Mavericks by a similar score. Wooster won 110-100 and Port won 96-84. This is the 3rd time these teams have met in the past 14 years with Wooster holding the advantage having won the previous 2 matchups. Wooster will have a slight height advantage in this game as they start a 6'7" forward, a 6'5" forward, a 6'5" guard, a 6'1" guard and a 5'10" guard.

The oddsmakers have made the Scots, currently ranked #26 in the D3hoops Top 25 poll, as a 7 point favorite in this game. They will move into the Top 25 next week if they win this game. They may have already moved into the Top 25 because this week's voting won't include the result of this game, and they won their only game last week. I believe the Golden Eagles have an excellent chance to pull off the mild upset here. They need to keep Justin Summers and Jahidi Wallace out of foul trouble, attack Wooster's big men and get them in foul trouble, especially #0 Dontae Williams and #32 Danyon Hempy. Take good shots, once Port has a lead, and when Wooster turns the ball over, don't give it right back with a lazy or telegraphed pass. And please hit your foul shots...45% is gonna cost you a game. Brockport has 3 players that played the last time these teams met in 2017. Wooster has 2. I'm taking Brockport to win by a 75-73 final score.

Brockport leads Wooster 45-43 at the half.

Wooster trailing by 7 at 41-34 with 2:45 left in the but half manages to get within 2 points at the break as they drain a 3 pointer at the buzzer.

Brockport doing what I asked as Justin Summers and Jahidi Wallace staying out of foul trouble (1 on each of them) and have Wooster's 2 bigs with 2 fouls each. Port with 6 turnovers to 9 for the Scots. Port shooting 50% in the first period. Wooster has 22 rebounds to 19 for Brockport.

Justin Summers leads Brockport with 16 points,2 rebounds and 2 assists. Jahidi Wallace has 8 points and 2 rebounds.
Davonte Jones has 7 points.

Keonn Scott  leads Wooster with 16 points. Danyon Hempy has 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and a steal. Need to go right at him early and get him on the bench with a 3rd foul.

Brockport 90  #24 Wooster 94

This is one the Golden Eagles let slip away. They were the winners of this game with 4:52 left on the clock as they were up by 8 points at 79-71. Those aren't games you lose. You salt those away by playing solid basketball down the stretch. The Golden Eagles allowed back to back wide open three pointers that cut the lead to 2 and then had a turnover that sent the Scots to the line, where they cut it to a single point. It took Wooster 62 seconds to erase most of that 8 point lead. Two minutes later their big man Danyon Hempy got loose inside and slammed one home that gave them the lead for good at 83-81. Brockport came up empty on their possession and sent Wooster to the line where they hit both free throws to go up by 4 points. Port missed again, Wooster didn't and this one was pretty much over. The Golden Eagles had scored just once in their 8 possessions since they were ahead by 8 points. Brockport tried the foul route but Wooster went 6x8 from the line to close tjhis one out and win their 2nd Mauro Panaggio Tournament in 2 tries. They also won the tournament 2 years ago with a win over the Golden Eagles.

Brockport
Justin Summers had another big game with 24 poings, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Jahidi Wallace had 14 points and 4 rebounds.

Tyler Collins  had 13 points, 4 assists and 2 steals.

Davonte Jones had 11 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal.

Devante Hagins had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and a block.

Summers and Wallace made the All Tournament Team.

Wooster
Danyon Hempy captured scoring honors with 32 points and was also the top rebounder with 8 boards. He added 4 assists, 4 bolcks and a steal. He was 10x13 from the field, 2x4 from long range and 10x12 from the line. He was also the MVP of the tournament.

Keonn Scott had 26 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and a steal. He was 4x8 from downtown. He also made the All Tournament Team.

Trenton Tipton had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block.

Dontae Williams had 10 points and 6 boards.

The stat that hurt the Golden Eagles more than any other was 3 point shooting as they were only 4x22 from long distance. Wooster was 9x19. Port was actually 30x50 on shots inside the arc. Wooster enjoyed their best shooting night of the season as they were 33x60 (55%) from the field. Free throws were almost even as Brockport was 18x24 and Woster was 19x26. Wooster had 36 rebounds to 38 for Port. Turnovers ended up fairly close....15 for Brockport and 16 for Wooster.

Brockport falls to 6-2 overall (2-0 YAC) and will be off until January 3rd when they host Alfred at 5:00 PM.

Wooster is now 7-1 (3-0) and will make the Top 25 if not tonight then probably next week. They are back in action on December 28th when they host Keene State in the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic/Great Lakes Invitational.

Update:  Wooster did make the D3hoops Top 25  this week as it was posted a short while ago. They check in at #24.

Just got back last night from the Mauro Panaggio Memorial Tournament in Daytona and watched 4 great D3 games. The largest margin of victory of the 4 games was 10 points. Two games were decided on the final possession and one in the final minute. As Magic said, my Eagles were on the cusp of blowing St Joe's the first day, but the Monks were a fiesty 3-point shooting squad going 15-31. The Eagles were too athletic and brought great intensity to win by 10. The Wooster game was another great effort leading 78-71 with about 5 minutes, but came up empty on many possessions down the stretch. Again Bport's athleticism allows them to play with any team, but when it comes down to half court possession basketball they need to execute more efficiently. They are a fun team to watch and have a lot of pieces to the puzzle. They are a great group of kids with a coaching staff dedicated to getting the most out of their talent. I really enjoyed watching them play live and wish them all safe travels home and a happy holiday season!!! Go Eagles!!!!

Cortland's Austin Grunder was selected for the 2nd straight time as the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the Games of Dec. 9-Dec. 15, 2019. Austin was also chosen as the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week ending 12-8.

Here's the write-up from the SUNYAC website:

"The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has picked Cortland's Austin Grunder (Trumansburg, N.Y.) as its PrestoSports Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the second-straight week.

Grunder led Cortland with 28 points and 15 rebounds in a 71-62 win over Eastern University Sunday evening to open the HoopMIA D3 Holiday Classic in Miami Shores, Fla. He finished 10-for-14 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and added two assists while playing the entire 40 minutes. Grunder scored 23 of his 28 points in the opening half. He's registered a double-double in each of his first five games, with each of his games consisting of at least 17 points and 15 rebounds."

Congratulations again to Austin who continues to excel on the court.

Dec. 17                              Just one game scheduled for today.

Cortland State  vs  Gwynedd Mercy        6:00 PM   @ Miami, Florida     HoopMIA D3 Holiday Classic

Cortland looks to go 2-0 on their Florida trip as they take on the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy. The Griffins are 7-2 and recently played in the same tournament that Potsdam State was in at York (NY). I thought Potsdam would end up playing GM in the championship game of that tournament but the Griffins lost to SUNY-Purchase 80-73 and the Bears played Purchase instead. The Griffins defeated Plattsburgh State in the first round of the NCAA tournament last year by a 73-65 score. They return 3 of the 4 players that scored double figures in that game so this will be a tough matchup for Cortland.

Cortland getting much of their offense from 2 players...Austin Grunder and Eric Edwards as they account for 55% of the team's scoring. Will need other sources if either of those two get in foul trouble. The Griffins did a good job shutting down Jon Patron last year in the NCAA game and will look to do the same to Grunder who is off to a great start.

The experts have made Gwynedd Mercy a slim 1 point favorite in this game, which means it's a pick 'em. I'm taking the Red Dragons, and hope they can avenge my Cardinals. Final score Cortland 74  Gwynedd Mercy 72.
