Cortland State 88 Plattsburgh State 77

Plattsurgh played another tough game for the 2nd day in a row and stayed with Cortland for most of the game. They had a 2 point lead at halftime, but I knew it was just a matter of time. It's hard to play shorthanded at home, even worse when it's on the road for a weekend trip. The Cardinals played well this weekend and I would have liked to see them get a win. They worked overtime. Our day will come.

The teams traded baskets early in the 2nd period and the Cardinals went ahead 43-38 which was their largest lead of the game. It didn't last long as Cortland reversed it with an 18-3 run that put them in front 56-46. Using their favorite weapon...the 3 pointer... the Red Dragons made 3 triples in 90 seconds and after Plattsburgh made 1 of 2 from the line Cortland buried another 3ball 30 seconds later to increase the lead to 59-47. Still down by 13 with 8:44 to play, the Cardinals got 3 straight jumpers from Travis Cox on 3 successive possessions, and Matt Bernhard had a 4 point play to narrow the margin to 67-62. Cox hit another jumper and Cortland went to the line and got a pair of free throws from Brendan Fitzpatrick to keep the lead at 5. Bernhard then drained another one from long range to bring Plattsburgh as close as they would get the rest of the way at 69-67.

On Cortlands next possession they were fouled and went to the line for a 1 and 1. They missed the free throw but got the offensive rebound and turned it into a 4 point lead. Then Plattsburgh missed on their end and Cortland went up by 6. An offensive foul on the Cardinals led to another Cortland bucket and this one was over. Cortland stretched the lead to 14 points and won by the 11 point margin.

I said in my preview of Cortland's game against Potsdam on Friday that the Red Dragons take more shots from long distance than anyone in the YAC. They had 31 attempts on Friday and made 11. They took 33 attempts in this game and made 15. Plattsburgh was 11 for 29 from distance. The big hurt was at the foul line as Cortland was 19x23. Plattsburgh only got to the stripe 7 times and made 4. Plattsburgh also had 12 turnovers to just 6 for the Dragons. We won the rebounding battle 37-32.

Cortland
Ryan Schmadel captured scoring honors with 26 points and also had 5 rebounds. He was 6x11 from deep.
Austin Grunder had his usual double-double of 16 points and a game high 14 rebounds. He was 3x4 from long range.
Brendan Fitzpatrick had 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
Eric Edwards had 15 points and 7 rebounds.
Jake DiSanto had 11 points and 4 assists.

Plattsburgh
Travis Cox led Plattsburgh with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal.
Nick DeAngelis had 18 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and a block.
Matt Bernhard had 17 points equaling the career high he set yesterday. He also added 4 boards and 2 assists.
Cameron Ness had 6 points, 6 rebounds and 1 assist.
Marlon Todd came off the bench and hit 2 big 3 pointers to total 6 points in 11 minutes of court time.
Erik Salo had 5 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Cortland improves to 15-7 overall and 9-6 in the YAC. They will play at New Paltz on Tuesday at 7:30 PM

Plattsburgh falls to 8-15 overall and 5-11 in the YAC. Next they will host New Paltz on Friday, February 21st at 7:30.

Projected Final Regular Season Standings.

With one week left in the SUNYAC, and teams having from 1 to 3 games left, these are my best guesses as to what the final standings will look like. Current SUNYAC record is in parentheses. Remember these are my predictions, not facts, and if, for instance, Oneonta defeats Potsdam, that changes who the #2 seed would be. Obviously other changes could also occur.

Team                             Final Record               How They Finish

#1  Brockport State (15-1)             17-1               Defeat Cortland, Defeat Oswego

#2  Potsdam State (13-3)              15-3                Defeat Oneonta, Defeat New Paltz*

#3  Oneonta State (13-2)              15-3                Defeat Oswego, Lose to Potsdam, Defeat Plattsburgh

#4  Cortland State (9-6)                11-7                Defeat New Paltz, Lose to Brockport, Defeat Geneseo

#5  Oswego State (10-5)               11-7                Lose to Oneonta, Defeat Geneseo, Lose to Brockport**

#6  Plattsburgh State (5-11)          6-12                Defeat New Paltz, Lose to Oneonta***

#7  Geneseo State (6-10)              6-12                Lose to Oswego, Lose to Cortland

#8  Buffalo State (3-14)                 4-14    Elim.    Defeat Fredonia

#9 Fredonia State (4-13)               4-14     Elim.    Lose to Buffalo State

#10 New Paltz State (1-14)            1-17     Elim.    Lose to Cortland, Plattsburgh, and Potsdam

*Potsdam wins the tiebreaker over Oneonta. They split the season series  but Potsdam has a win against Brockport which gives the #2 seed to the Bears.

**This is a worst case scenario for Oswego. They could defeat either Oneonta or Brockport and have a better record than Cortland and get the 4 seed. If they end up tied with Cortland, then the Red Dragons win the tiebreaker by virtue of their win over Potsdam.

***If Plattsburgh and Genseso end up tied with 6-12 records, the Cardinals have the tiebreaker by virtue of their win over Cortland.

Congrats to SUNY Potsdam soph Isaiah Brown, [Westside Queens, NIA Prep]for his fourth selection as SUNYAC player of the week.

Brown scored 75 points in less than 24 hours as he led the Bears to a road split in the next to last week of conference play. He averaged 37.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game while shooting 59% from the  floor, 48% from beyond the arc, and 85% from the charity stripe. He came within one point of the all time Potsdam single game scoring record with 42 points in a come from behind 76-62 victory on Saturday afternoon at Oswego, and led a fierce comeback from 19 points down in the second half in a 88-93 loss Friday night at Cortland, scoring 33 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Brown added 3 blocks during the two games.

In 14 games this season after joining the team in January, Brown is averaging 24.6 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game as the Bears have posted a 12-2 record since he joined them.

Congratulations, Isaiah.

The D3hoops Top 25 latest poll came out Monday night and Brockport State finally made it into the Top 25. They have been listed in the Others Receiving Votes for the past 2 weeks but are now at #25 with 53 points.

They are the only team from the East Region with any votes.

Last Saturday on Senior Night at Brockport, the Golden Eagles started senior Justin Summer who has been out since January 17th when he was injured in a game against Oneonta. It wasn't a ceremonial start for an injured player because he played 11 minutes, scored 13 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 blocks. He didn't play long because they didn't need him and he needs to get back up to speed. No sense in taking chances in a game they were winning by a large margin. I'm guessing he will be available for the playoffs and hopefully the NCAA tournament. So glad to see him back on the court. Brockport went through this a few years ago when SUNYAC Player of the Year and All American John Ivy got hurt. He  missed the playoffs and NCAA tournament, depriving Brockport of a chance at a nice run that year. I'd like to see Brockport have that chance, this year.

February 18th      Two games scheduled for tonight

Cortland State  at  New Paltz State        7:30 PM

Cortland shouldn't look past the Hawks, as they think about their Friday night matchup with Brockport. New Paltz has nothing to play for but pride and they would love to get a couple of big wins in what has been a down year for them. This is the Hawks last home game and if they can give their fans a W here, it will be very satisfying.

Cortland still has hopes for a home playoff game in the first round. Most likely against Oswego. They would prefer not to play it in Laker Hall, even though they have had considerable success in Oswego in recent years. The experts have made Cortland a 15 point favorite in this one. I think they win win by a few more.
Cortland 90 New Paltz 67.

Oswego State  at  Oneonta State        7:30      Featured Game of the Night

These Red Dragons have won 4 in a row and are still hoping for a first round bye. They would like the top seed but that's a bit of a stretch at this point. They would need to win out and Brockport would need to lose  their remaining 2 games, since Brockport holds the tiebreaker over Oneonta, by virtue of their season sweep of the Red Dragons. I don't think either of those possibilities will happen .

Oneonta has been playing well despite the loss of big man, Joe Bull, as they are 5-1, with just the loss to Brockport, since his injury. I'm hoping he will be able to return for the playoffs but haven't heard what the prognosis is for that to happen. Never like to see a good team lose one of their top players at any point during the season, but especially when the playoffs start.

Oswego has lost 2 of their last 3 games and is in danger of losing a home playoff game. They need a win here to stay ahead of Cortland for that prize. For the past four years these teams have split the season series. Five years ago Oswego won both games. Oneonta has a leg up on this year's series as they won the first meeting back in January, 76-66, at Oswego. The oddsmakers have made Oneonta a slim 4 point favorite here and I like Oneonta as well. They are 16-2 in their last 18 games with both losses at the hands of Brockport...the #25th ranked team in the country according to the latest D3Hoops Top 25 poll. This time it's the Red Dragons who sweep the season series.... Oneonta 84 Oswego 77

Congrats to SUNY Potsdam's Isaiah Brown for making the D-III Hoops team of the week for the week ending 2/15.

He joins Austin Grunder (2 selections) and Ben Walters of SUNY Cortland who were selected earlier this season.
