Brockport St. in a battle with Roberts Wesleyan. Tied at 60 with 1:48 to play RW has forged into a 68-63 lead with 14 seconds to go.

Now a final 68-63. Golden Eagles lose in the 1st round of the Wendy's Classic in Rochester.
Tied at 60 Wesleyan's Jordon Heath gets hoop and 1 to grab lead and never headed. Port turns it over on ensuing oossession and Heath scores another bucket as RW goes up by 5. Eagles Zenkel hits a 3 and gets a steal  but Port's Klein  misses a 3 for the lead. RW rebound and Heath dunks for his 7th straight point and that wraps it up.

Gerald Williams with 14 pts(3x11 fg, 2x7 3's, 6x6 ft) and Derek Klein with 11pts(3x5 fg, 3x5 3's, 2x2 ft) only ones in double figures for Port.  Zack McTigue with 8pts and 9 boards. RW with A. Bland, J. Heath, and D. Foley with 16, 14, and 10 pts in that order.
Brockport shoots 22x63 from the field, 9x30 from 3, and 10x14 from the line. Eagles out rebounded 43 to 33.  Wesleyan 23x48 fg, 4x14 3's, and 20x31 from the stripe.
Brockport falls to 7-3 on the year.

Geneseo St falls to Rochester 61-51 in the 1st round of the Wendy's Classic.
Yellowjackets down by 10,  17-7 with 11:00 to go in the 1st half come back to grab 27-25 edge at the break. Rochester quickly up by 11 to start the 2nd and twice Knights cut it to 4, the last time 46-42 at 8:39 before 13-4 Rochester spurt slams the door. Blue Knights led by Brandon Simpson with 12 pts (6x17 fg) and 8 rebounds. Abe Miller added 7 pts and 10 boards. Mike Baker all around game of 8 pts, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Rochester's Nate Novosel led all scorers with 14 pts on 7x14 from the field and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Colin Cubit chipped in with 10 pts. John DiBartolomeo added 9 pts, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 7 steals. Rochester moves to 10-2 while Geneseo falls to 2-8.

FreddyState. I could not agree with you more. Freshman Jake Simmons is probably  1 or 2 weeks away from being MVP of the YAC. Although he, Frosh Simmons, is currently the leading scorer in the YAC, he still gas a lot of room for improvement!

Still I must admit that I feel that Jake Simmons really got slighted Monday, 1/11, when the "SUNYAC player of the week" was announced and Fredonia's Senior Brad Cooper won (for the second time in 3 weeks). Stat line for last week....

B. Cooper in 2 games vs. Plattsburgh and Potsdam - 39 points, 4 assists, 9 rebounds and 4 steals
J. Simmons in 3 games vs Plattsburgh, Potsdam and Hobart  - 69 points, 6 assists, 10 rebounds and 6 steals.

I would ask the SUNYAC statistician why he did not give it to Simmons, but when I saw that all questions must be sent to "SUNYAC.pub@fredonia.edu" then I think that I already had my answer!

I too agree that on any given night anyone can beat anyone in the wacky YAC! I hope your hometown "huge advantage" theory takes a hit this weekend when the BENGALS travel to New Paltz and Oneonta!

Oh and BTW...

And Buffs appear to have the real goods. Stats would seem to indicate more discipline ..... fewer threes (though J. Simmons has green light for good reason) and turnovers.

Great observation JDEX. Yes I too agree that Jake does have the "green light!!"

WAAYY too early for MVP talk. Easy to say when teams have played an unbalanced 3 or 4 game conference schedule to date. Once all teams have 9 games under their belt will be much easier to narrow the list. My short list has about 15 names on it right now but I can tell you that the winner will probably come from one of the top 2 or 3 teams at the end of the year.

Bengalsrule,
You're right Simmons got hosed. If you just look at the 2 SUNYAC games which happen to be a great comparison because both Simmons and Cooper played against the same 2 teams(Plattsburgh and Potsdam) Simmons averaged 24 pts, 4.5 ppg more than Cooper, shot 18x35 from the field(51.4%) slightly below Cooper's 53.9%, but a whopping 11x20 from 3 point land (55%). Cooper was 33.3% from behind the arc. The steals, assists, and rebounds were fairly even. I could see giving it to Cooper a 2nd time if there were no other noteworthy performances, but Simmons had an OUTSTANDING week and should have received the laurels. SUNYAC missed the boat on that one. But that comes as no surprise. SUNYAC site is poorly maintained. Still can't get any statistics for this years games. That's sad. :( >:( ???

Big weekend coming up. Home teams have ruled for the most part among the top 8 teams. Will that continue? I think it does.(Ihope ;D)

Have to believe Cooper passing 1,000 point career milestone had something to do with it, yes? Along with where site is edited. And just who selects these awards anyway? Most kinda make sense

Magic: Apparently no M. Lewis injury. And speaking of vanishing acts, we were reminded of another non-factor -- senior W. Coston. Some thought in the past that athletically he had few conference peers. Kind of lost in the shuffle of many new backcourt hands

And we're not sleeping on Brockport. For sure a threat although beaten Wednesday by Robts Wes, a tough-to-get-a-handle on 8-6. Three wins have come over P. Smith and Canton. But has beaten Naz handily and played others tough. Gets UR next

jdex,
You're right. The 1000 pt milestone is probably why he got it. Simmons' good week was just bad timing for him. I have no clue who selects these awards. Always wondered about that.  Would think it would be more than 1 person's opinion but it could be exactly that . I'll have to check with some of my sources at the college tomorrow night when I go to the Cortland-Plattsburgh game.
Yes, Coston was another of that talented group of sopomores (along with Lewis, Evans, and Oliver) that gave the Cardinals fits twice that year. Nobody in the conference played us any tougher.(Port was equally as tough but we only played them once because of the split divsions)  With Plattsburgh losing their entire starting 5 and Port losing Sherod Harris I thought Cortland with those 4 guys returning plus Jr Carson Niehoff was a shoo in to win it all last year. And certainly would be a top contender this year.(And still think they will be despite recent setbacks.) It appears that Coston has gone from starter to the 6th choice among guards. That's a big tumble for a Senior to have to take. Strange indeed. And Brockport will be there as well. Small but extremely athletic.

By the way, live stats available for the game at this link:

I think Simmons should have definetly gotten the player of the week last week as well but like jdex and magicman said cooper did get the 1000 point mark ...I dont beleive any freshman has ever gotten the player of the year award in the sunyac (atleast not in the last 12 years)  I dont think any freshman has even ever made first team in the last 10 years and there has been some good high scoring freshman ...thats why they have rookie of the year awards ....But you guys are right it is way to early to talk mvp...cant wait to see what happens up in oneonta, new paltz this weekend...cortland at plattsburgh should be a good mathup as well both teams coming off some early 2nd semester loses

thanks for the link magicman i will have to check that game out

And Paul Smiths at 140 of 140 in NAIA-2.

Brockport wins a consolation round matchup in the Wendy's Classic against Geneseo 83-69.

Eagles place 4 in double figures led by Derek Klein's 17 pts (5x10 fg, 5x9 3's, 2x2 ft). Gerald Williams with 14 pts (5x10 fg, 3x6 3's, 1x2 ft), Josh Zenkel with 13 pts (3x7 fg, 3x5 3's 4x4 ft) and Jermaine Johnson with 12 pts (3x8 fg, 0x4 3's 6x7 ft). Port took 37 of their 52 field goal attempts from beyond the arc sinking 15 of them.
Bombs away!!! 10x21 inside the arc. 18 of 21 from the charity stripe.
Tied at 12 with 13:22 left in the 1st the Eagles take control and never headed. Up by 4 at 25-21, Brockport closes out the half on a 14-4 run to go into the break leading 42-28. Blue Knights cut lead in half 43-36 early in 2nd period but Eagles quickly build it back to 13 and open it up to their largest lead of the game 64-45 with 8:42 remaining.
Geneseo led by double-double from Kyle Stevens with 16 pts (5x12 fg, 1x5 3's 5x6 ft) and 12 rebounds. Abe Miller also with a double-double of 15 pts (5x7 fg, 5x10 ft) and 12 boards. Brandon Simpson just missed his with 16 pts (8x11 fg) and 9 rebounds.Gens 27x58 from the field but only 3 of 15 from 3 point land and 12 for 26 from the line. Huge rebounding edge in Blue Knights favor 48-26 but meaningless in a 14 pt loss.

jdex,
Just back from the game and not happy with what I witnessed in the friendly confines of Memorial Hall. 1st half was all Cortland as they out rebounded, outshot, and outhustled the Cardinals. Tied at 13 with 11:25 left to play Red Dragons go on a 13-4 spurt over the next 5 minutes to take control and stretched their lead to 36-21 at the break by ending the half on another 10-4 run. Screen and rolls, and back door cuts accounted for a number of easy Cortland buckets. Red Dragons had 33 field goal attempts in the 1st half nearly double the Cards total of 17. Plattsburgh got hurt on the boards 19 to 14 and committed 12 turnovers to only 5 for the Corts. Jesse Winter was 3x4 fg 2x2 3's for 9 pts and Dustin Marshall (7 pts) hit 5-6 from the line to pace Cortland. Chris Ruiz led the Cardinals with 12 1st half points on 4x7 fg 2x3 3's.

The Red Dragons hit the 1st basket of the 2nd half to open up their largest lead of the night at 17 points. After a Carl Munnerlyn 3 cut it to 14 Jesse Winter's and one hoop makes it a 17 point edge for the last time. Cardinals finally start to click and go to their full court trapping press which, over the next 5 and a half minutes, whittles the lead down to 48-40. After a Cortland free throw Plattsburgh's Ketema Brooks and Munnerlyn hit back to back 3's and cut the deficit to 3 at 49-46 with 10:47 remaining. Ensuing Cortland possession Jeremy Smith is fouled by Ruiz as they try to trap him and ref calls a technical because of Ruiz' reaction to the call. Smith hits both free throws, Dragons take the ball out, Smith is fouled again, and nails 2 more foul shots building the lead back to 7 at 53-46. I think this was the real turning point of the game. Especially went Cardinals come up empty from the line on their next set and Cort"s Winter hits a pair from the stripe. Lead went from 3 to 9 in 50 seconds and Cards had expended a lot of energy to get it down to 3 pts. Three more times Plattsburgh cut the lead to 5 but Cortland had an answer every time they did and the last time was at the 3:34 mark when Cards Munnerlyn hit his 6th straight 3 pointer of the 2nd half to narrow the gap to 69-64. And one layup by Oliver followed by another easy layup by Winter and Red Dragons quickly up by 10 again. Final score of 78-73 only because Cards scored 7 pts in final 16 seconds.

Once again no sign of Will Coston in the game. I couldn't even tell if he was there because only 10 guys took their jerseys off and I never saw his number. I assume he was because Cortland dressed 16 players and that's how many were listed on the program. Spanbauer used a 9 man rotation all getting double digit minutes. 10th man Mike Lewis came into the game late in the 1st half and played a 6 minute stretch because Oliver got in foul trouble and had to go to the bench. He made about a 30 second appearance late in the second half but was scoreless (didn't take a shot) and had 2 rebounds. Winter definitely looks to be the best of the 3 freshman, good shooter with quickness to beat you off the dribble. Smith and other frosh Harrison Hefele also good players with lots of potential.

Your Red Dragons were the better team tonight and team is the key word here. They consistantly worked their half court sets and were patient until they found the open shooter or cutter many times taking the shot clock down to final seconds before getting a bucket. Made the Cards play defense much longer than the Cards made them play defense. Span subbed multiple players at a time to keep team fresh. 73 sub minutes for Corts to 47 for Cards.  Cardinals too much I've got the ball and I'm gonna score individual play, especially in the 1st half. Curle must have chewed them out good at the break because they found the open man much better in the 2nd half. And Munnerlyn was that man and he was on fire. He played 32 minutes but all 18 of his points came in 16 minutes of the 2nd half. We won the 2nd half but too little too late. Maybe Red Dragons can return the favor when Cards visit Corey Gym on Feb 13.
