Just back from the Plattsburgh St-Oneonta St. game and what I expected to be a battle turned out to be an easy win for the Cardinals. Plattsburgh jumps out to a quick 6-0 lead on 2 treys by Chris Ruiz annd after a Brian Beckford jumper for Oneonta, Carl Munnerlyn hits a 3 pointer to give the Cards an early 9-2 advantage that they would never relinquish. Cards quickly build lead to double figures and lead 17-4 with 12:00 remaining in the half. Oneonta cut it to 19-9 at the 10:09 mark but that was as close as they got the rest of the night. Cards cruised in the break up 40-24 and quickly extended it to 46-25 to open up the 2nd half. A Brian Hooks trey got Oneonta within 13 at 60-4 with 9:21 to play but 6 straight pts by Plattsburgh built it backto 19 at the 8:00 minute mark. Every time Oneonta scored , the Cards had an answer and with 4:34 to play and the Cards up 73-51 Oneonta's Coach Medici threw in the towel and emptied the bench. Card's Coach Curle did likewise and the reserves finished up for the 78-56 final score.
Plattsburgh placed 4 players in double figures led by Chris Ruiz(8x14 fg, 2x3 3's, 1x1 ft) who also added 4 rebounds and 3 assists. 17 points were scored by both Carl Munnerlyn (6x8 fg, 3x5 3's, 2x2 ft, 4 asst) and Steve Thomas (7x12 fg, 0x2 3's, 3x5 ft, 5 reb, 3 asst). Errol Daniyan added 14 pts (6x12 fg, 2x4 ft, 5 reb).
Cardinals shot 31x66 fg, (47%) 5x12 3's and 11x19 from the stripe. Both teams hauled down 38 rebounds. Plattsburgh only committed 8 turnovers while Oneonta had 15.
Red Dragons were led by Brian Beckford with 16 points((6x16 fg, 0x2 3's, 4x12 ft 8 rebounds) No other player hit double digits. Oneonta had a poor 1st half shooting the ball only 9x29 for 31% but picked it up in the 2nd period going 11x23 for an overall 20x52 (38.5%). Brian Hooks made their only 3 pointers hitting 3 of 6 as the team only took 9  attempts from behind the arc. Trouble at the foul line also hurt the Red Dragons as they only made 13 of 30 attemptts.

Plattsburgh improves to 6-4 in the YAC and  takes over sole possession of 3rd place. Oneonta drops to 5-5 and is now tied with Buffalo St. for 4th place. Oneonta travels to Potsdam for a Sat. afternoon game with the Bears, while Plattsburgh hosts New Paltz at 4PM tomorrow.

Yea, Fran, knew that. Guess we should have been more specific in tying the Riley connections to the two Cortlanders -- Linton football to Cortland High product (and All-East Colgate qb) Lalla, and Linton hoops to Cortland State's Przybylo. Lalla recalled Riley as quite the 'hood' of the day (now there's a '50s/60s blast from the past) -- a biker with a smoke in hand.  And now ...... for F. Elia's induction (the kid did good!)

Sorry, jdex - I should know by know not to question you!!  :)  I didn't recognize Lalla's name, and the coincidence with Riley having two "Cortland" influences was something I never knew. Thanks for the history lesson!! I will now go to a classroom and write "I will not doubt jdex again" 100 times on the blackboard. :)

franelia,
As jdex once told me, he's older than dirt, he forgot to add, and still sharp as a tack. :D

with age came?

Bear must be estatic!!! Potsdam notches win 2.  I swear it seems like there is a "Grinnell" model team in every league! Run, chuck, & sub baby!!  d ?  What d?

And where has "the bear" been hibernating? A definite sighting over on the E8 board earlier Friday but nary a whiff of him over here. After the big upset of Cortland 2 weeks ago and the blowout of New Paltz Friday evening I expected a growl or two. I know about the west coast trip but that doesn't explain his lengthy absences.

with age came?

Probably flying low under radar until his "team" sneaks into the 8th spot - runs the table and turns into the "dancing bears"!! :D

I'm here, just being appropriately humble.

Bears played their best game of the season last night.

Really like first year player Curtis Pierce, 6-3 forward.  Reminds me of Mo Woods, key in some of the great 80's teams, takes good shots, knows how to finish, and despite his size is a force on the boards.  He's averaging 13ppg & shooting 67% from the floor, def a contender for conference rookie of the year.

Team really had a balanced effort, 13 point effort in 17' by Eddie Cross was huge.   Anthony Williams Jr, Ben Walker, and Olando Minott all had solid games.

I think that the Bears may have taken the Brockport post on this board to heart, they played an active zone most of the game, didn't foul, worked the ball for good shots (70% from the floor), took decent care of the ball,  and held their own on the boards, despite giving up size at every spot.  They held NP to 25 points under their season scoring average.

All this & they played without top 3 pt threat Skip Schwartz, (10 ppg 46% 3FG%) who was on the bench in street clothes, but is expected to play today.

This game was a 50 point turnaround from the first semester meeting at New Paltz.

Bears have 8 conference games left - 5 at home, 3 away ('burgh, Corts, Oswego).  They have already played everyone at least once, so know what to expect.  My guess is with the parity in the SUNYAC this year, it could take 7 wins for the #8 spot.  Still doable given the results this season and the schedule.  Dobbs & Co are working hard.  Lots of teams would have folded long ago.

Oneonta comes to town this afternoon, probably looking to salvage something from their all expenses paid weekend tour of the frozen tundra (Overnight low here was -14 (NOT wind chill).)  Similar matchup, Oneonta has lots of size, scorers, shooters, athletes.

Sometimes you just have to poke a bear with a stick to get a reaction!! ;)  Glad to see you're back. Sounds like the Pierce kid will have a bright future, if he's getting a Mo Woods comparison. Good to hear some positives coming out of Potsdam. Now Dobbs has to bring in some decent recruits next year and get the program back on track. It's been a tough year after the losses of the big men that were supposed to be there.

Oneonta is going to come to play today, so the Bears will have their work cut out for them. I imagine the Red Dragon coach chewed them out pretty good after the whipping the Cards put on them last night. Plattsburgh just outhustled them and held them to 13 pts below their scoring average. Shoud have been an even bigger margin as Cards missed at least 4 wide open dunks. I expected a barn burner and in that respect it was disappointing, but good to see Plattsburgh put it all together for a change. They played a solid game last week against Potsdam but I didn't travel over for the game. Two good back to back efforts for them, hope it's the beginning of a nice run up to the playoffs. Still a chance the Cards can host the tournament, but we need to be perfect and still will need help. The Feb. 20th game against the Golden Eagles looms large. Good luck today. Go Bears!

Looking all too familiar ------Cortland losing 28-23 at the half at Geneseo. Gens have to be seriously focused after early December crushing defeat at CSt where RDragons were 52-14 halftime leaders

New Paltz comes back from early hole to lead host Plattsburgh by four with about six minutes left till half

New Paltz with 45-37 lead at Plattsburgh at half

Brockport up 35-30 over Oswego thru 20'
