magicman

Here's a wrap-up of  the Plattsburgh-Fredonia game that Plattsburgh won 60-48. Back and forth play through the 1st 12 minutes had 5 ties and 5 lead changes as both teams tried to dictate the pace of the game. Plattsburgh was looking for an up tempo contest while Fredonia wanted to work the shot clock and create long possessions to neutralize the Cardinals fast paced attack. Each team had some success with their style of play as Fredonia gained their largest lead of the night at 13-9 with 10:48 left in the 1st half. A 9-2 spurt by the Cardinals regained the lead at 18-15 with 6:18 to go. However, the turning point occured when senior captain Danny Tangney entered the game with Plattsburgh up 20-17 and scored the Cardinals final 8 points of the 1st period on 2 free throws plus back to back 3 pointers in the final 3:36, giving Plattsburgh its' largest lead of the half at 28-21. Plattsburgh came out of the break with 2 quick buckets extending their lead to 11 and were still up by 12 when the Blue Devils threatened once again cutting the lead to 42-36 with 10:50 to play. But another Tangney basket and 2 Steve Thomas free throws restored a double digit lead that reached 15 pts at 57-42 with 3:13 remaining.

Steve Thomas was the game's high scorer and led 4 Cardinal players in double figures with 16 pts(4x10 fg, 8x8 ft) in 33 mins. Daniyan followed with 13 pts(4x8 fg, 5x11 ft) and was also the games leading rebounder with 8 boards in 33 mins.
Chris Ruiz had 11 pts(5x12 fg, 1x5 3's), with 6 boards and 2 assists in 35 mins. Danny Tangney finished with 10 pts(3x4 fg, 2x3 3's, 2x2 ft) in only 14 mins. As a team the Cards shot 20x43 fg(46.5%), 4x10 3's(40%), and 16x23 ft(69.9%). They won the battle of the boards 31 to 24 and both teams committed 10 turnovers

Fredonia leading scorer was Scott Valenta with 15 pts(6x10 fg, 1x1 3's, 2x2 ft)in 25 mins. James Kane was next with 9 pts(3x9 fg, 3x4 ft) and topped the Blue Devils with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Fredonia shot 18x43(41.9%) from the field, 2x8 3's(25%) and 10x17(58.8%) from the line.

Plattsburgh improves to 7-5 in the conference and 12-7 overall while Fredonia slips to 5-7 in the SUNYAC and 7-11 overall. The Cardinals host Buffalo St on Sat. aftyernoon at 4 PM while the Blue Debils continue their Northern trip with a visit to Potsdam to take on the Bears at the same time.

Huge test this afternoon in Oneonta where YAC leader Bport tries sweeping the series. Twas 74-67 outcome a month ago, tied at half and Port by one with two minutes left. That same weekend saw Bport  shake free of halftime tie with New Paltz and eventually waltz. Not the case last night on the road at the crazed Hawks home

Other matinees: Buff St. at the Burgh, Gens at the Paltz, and Freds at Pdam. On Super Sunday: Oswego at Morrisville for 1 o'clock tip

Buffalo St. last night flew free of a 33-33 halftime knot at Potsdam. Only a six point game at 5:29 but soon a 13 point separation after a J. Simmons trey and two J. Mitchell buckets. Mitchell a major story. Part of 28-9 bench points difference with 19 pts(9x11fg, 0x1 3), 3 assts in 32'. A. Samedi 16 pts(8x12fg, 5pf in 31'; J. Simmons 15 pts(6x13fg, 3x5 3s). Bengals 33x59fg, 3x10 3s, 7x11ft. Bears O. Minott 15 pts(6x16fg), 5 rebs; A. Williams 13 pts(5x7fg, 2x2 3s), 12 rebs, 3 stls; C. Pierce 13 pts(5x12fg), 7 rebs; B. Walker 13 pts), 6 trnvrs. Pdam 24x54fg, 5x9 3s, 12x18ft.

Plattsburgh St wins a thriller over Buffalo St. at Memorial Hall 88-86. Details to follow.

It doesn't get any more exciting than the finish of the Plattsburgh-Buffalo St. game this afternoon in Plattsburgh. Down 84-81, the Cardinals Errol Daniyan scores inside followed by a Chris Ruiz driving layup and 1 to give the Cards an 86-84 lead with 26 seconds to play. Buffalo St. comes down to play for the tie or win and with 6 seconds left Glenroy Carr grabs a rebound off a Bengal miss and is fouled on the putback attempt. Carr calmly makes both free throws to tie it up and the game has OT written all over it, just like the 1st meeting between the 2 teams back on January 8th. Plattsburgh inbounds the ball to Ruiz, who dribbles upcourt covered closely by Carr the entire way. With 2 seconds left and no options open Ruiz throws up a prayer from about 26' that has a chance but bouces off the rim right into the hands of Steve Thomas as he's leaping for the rebound. Thomas, while still elevated two hands the rebound and puts it back with the buzzer sounding as the ball falls through the hoop. Bedlam followed.

Buffalo St. opened the scoring in the 1st period and quickly grabbed a 9-2 lead, a lead they would manage to hold onto nearly the entire game. Cards came back to close within 1 at 13-12 but every time Plattsburgh got close the Bengals would respond and open up a 3 to 5 pt. advantage extending it to their largest lead of the half at 37-29 with 5 minutes to play. Cards chipped away and with 1:09 remaining a Danny Tangney jumper tied the game at 41. Bengals scored on their final 2 possessions to end the half up45-43.
Plattsburgh tied it up out of the break but with only 1:22 gone in the half the Cards big guy, Daniyan is called for his 3rd foul and has to take a seat on the bench. Buffalo St. bigs Carr and Antonio Samedi continued their excellent inside play, along with the outside shooting of Jake Simmons and the Bengals gradually forge a 10 point lead at 71-61 with 11:06 remaining. Plattsburgh refuses to fold and a Carl Munnerlyn 3 pointer, followed by an R.J. Ponesse jumper and another triple by Tangney, brought the Cards within 1 at 75-74 with 6:21 to play. Bengals go back up 78-74 but 3 straight buckets by Plattsburgh give the Cardinals their 1st lead of the game at 80-78 with 4:28 to go. A dunk by the Bengals Samedi who follows with 2 more layup regains the Bengals lead at 84-81, setting the stage for the fantastic finish. Tough loss for the Bengals who definitely came to  play today. Bengals lose Samedi who fouls out of the game with 26 seconds left and earlier with 2:18 left Jake Simmons committs his 5th foul colliding with the Cards Steve Thomas and both go down hard. Simmons was unconscious for several minutes as the game was delayed for about 8-10 minutes until he was finally able to get up and was helped to the Bengal bench. It's possible he may have suffered a concussion but that's just speculation on my part. It's hard to believe this Bengal team with their front line and a shooter like Jake Simmons and solid backcourt mate Norman Simmons hasn't had more success. Road woes continue and bench play seems to be a problem as Justin Mitchell with 6 pts was the top reserve. No sign of Anthony Hamer who was averaging 19 minutes a game.

Cardinals, as they did last night, once again placed 4 players in double figures led by Steve Thomas with 20 pts(8x15 fg,4x7 ft), 7 rebounds and 4 assists in 36 mins. Chris Ruiz was right behind with 17 pts(7x17 fg, 2x6 3's, 1x1 ft), 5 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals in 36 mins. Carl Munnerlyn had 14 pts(5x12 fg,1x2 3's, 3x4 ft) in 26 mins and R.J. Ponesse came off the bench to add 10 pts(4x7 fg, 2x3 ft) in 17 mins. Farris Thomas was just short of a double-double with 9 pts(4x7 fg) and 9 rebounds of which 5 came on the offensive end. Danny Tangney again came off the bench with some valuable minutes as he had 7 pts(3x4 fg, 1x1 3's) and 4 rebounds in only 19 mins. Cardinals shot 35x72(48.6%) from the field, 4x9(44.4%) from behind the arc, and 14x25(56%) from the line. They also came back to out rebound the Bengals 40-37, after being outboarded 18-15 in the 1st half. Both teams took care of the ball with each only having 8 turnovers.
Bengals Antonio Samedi was the leading scorer for the game with 27 pts(11x14 fg, 5x7 ft)and completed his double-double with 12 rebounds, also adding 5 blocks in 31 mins.. Glenroy Carr had 21 pts(7x12 fg, 7x10 ft) in 35 mins and Jake Simmons added 14 pts( 6x11 fg, 2x4 3's) in only 19 mins. Norm Simmons had 8 pts, 6 boards and 2 blocks while playing the entire 40 minutes.  T.O. Jackson  chipped in with 7 pts 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 28 mins. Bengals shot 33x65(50.8%) from the field, cooling off a bit in the 2nd half after hitting 18x29(62.1%) in the 1st period. They were 2x5 from 3 point land and 18x27(66.7%) from the line.

Cardinal improve to 8-5 in conference play 13-7 overall and will play their last 2 road games of the season next weekend as they travel to Oswego, then Cortland for what could be a battle for 2nd or possibly even 1st place for the Red Dragons depending on the outcome of tonight's Brockport-Oneonta game. Plattsburgh still mathmatically alive for the regular season crown after Brockport's slip up last night at New Paltz. Next up for Buffalo St. is a pair of home games against Oneonta and New Paltz next weekend.

Oneonta St hands visiting Brockport its' 2nd consecutive loss 65-54 as the race for the regular season crown heats up. The Golden Eagles lead has been reduced to a half game over Cortland St., 1 game over Oneonta St., and 1and 1/2 games over Plattsburgh St.

Fredonia St rebounds from last nights loss to edge host Potsdam 58-53.

Good win today magicman! Jake actually wound up going to the hospital afterwards to get 4 stitches. Ant Hamer has been out 9 days due to being tackled by James Kane at the end of the Fredonia game last weekend. He is still recovering from those injuries suffered from that dirty play (intentional was called on Kane). Sure could have used him tonite.

Not much else to say other than everyone needs to start studying the tiebreaker formulas because the finish line for first place - SUNYACS REg. season - may be a 3/4 way photo finish ( like last year except the firstplace winner could have as many 6/7 losses). I see Brockport getting at least 2 mores losses (at Plattsburgh and either Bengals or at Potsdam). Ditto for Cortland (at Oneonta and at either Buff State-on Randy Smith Celebration night or vs Plattsburgh). Oneonta finishes with 3 of there last 4 on the road..nuff said. And you know the rest!

  Proud of my BENGALS tonite!!!

Congrats!!

Brockport and Oneonta with a back and forth 1st half that saw 6 ties and 4 lead changes ending up in a 25-25 tie at the break. After Brockport scores the initial basket of the 2nd half to take the brief lead, Oneonta goes on a 18-1 run over the next 6 minutes to take a 15 pt. lead, 43-28, with 13:38 remaining. The Red Dragons maintained a double digit lead for much of the remainder of the game. The Golden Eagles got it to within 8 at the 5:07 mark and within 7 with 1:29 left but Oneonta hit their foul shots down the stretch for the final 11 pt margin.

Brian Beckford was the games leading scorer and rebounder as he had a double-double of 18 pts and 11 rebounds, with 4 assists and 4 blocked shots. He shot 7x11 from the field (1x1 3's 3x4 ft) in 35 mins. Brian Hooks with 17 pts(5x7 fg.4x6 3's 3x4 ft) in 40 mins and Shane Gillette with 12 pts (4x7 fg, 2x3 3's, 2x2 ft) in  33mins. Red Dragons shot 21x40(52.5%) from the field, 7x11(63.6%) 3's and 16x27(59.3%) from the line. They grabbed 41 rebounds to 28 for the Golden Eagles but that's no surprise. Oneonta had 21 turnovers due in part to 12 Brockport steals.
Brockport was led by Jermaine Johnson with 15 pts(5x11 fg, 1x1 3's 4x8 ft) in 30 mins., followed by Brandon Williams with 12 pts (5x12 fg, 2x4 ft) in 28 mins. Gerald Williams added 10 pts (3x10 fg, 4x4 ft) in 21 mins.  Eagles had trouble shooting the ball today from everywhere as they were only 18x55(32.7%) from the field, 3x14(21.4%) from beyond the arc, and 15x27(55.6%) from the free throw line. They only had 7 turnovers and despite being out rebounded again they managed to have 15 more field goal attempts than Oneonta. They just couldn't hit their shots tonight.

Next up for Oneonta is the trip west to Buffalo St and Fredonia next weekend, while Brockport with a game in hand on most teams only has a single game at  Geneseo next Friday.

One thing I forgot to mention in the synopsis of the Plattsburgh-Buff St. game was that Cardinals Coach, Tom Curle was unavailable to coach the team tonight due to a death in the family.(his uncle)   Assistant Coach, Cameron Conover, in his first game as the 'head" coach comes away with the victory. Congratulations to him for a job well done. He had to deal with a Buffalo St. team with a solid frontcourt without the services of Plattsburgh's best big man Errol Daniyan for long stretches due to foul trouble. Daniyan usually averages 33-34 minutes a game and tonight was limited to half his normal playing time with only 17 minutes. He also seemed to make the right moves with substitutions, bringing guys in and getting contributions from them at critical times. With Plattsburgh down by 1 and the ball with 54 secs left, he took a timeout to set the offense. Plattsburgh was looking to get a shot off without using up too much time so if Buffalo went down and scored there would still be enough time for the Cardinals to get anorther chance. The Cards came out of that timeout and after 11 seconds were still struggling to get a good shot. He quickly called another timeout with 43 seconds left which led to a Chris Ruiz layup and foul shot which gave the Cards the critical 2 pt lead. The way the Cards won on the last second putback after Buffalo St tied it up with the 2 free throws will surely make Coach Conover's first win even more memorable than a first win would ordinarily be. 8-)

New Paltz defeats the 3rd place, then 2nd place and then 1st place teams in the conference, in that order but sandwich's those 3 wins with a loss to 10th place Potsdam (by 19) and at home on Sat. to 8th place Geneseo (for the 2nd time this year). That's about as strange as it gets in the SUNYAC this season. Throw in the loss they had to 9th place Oswego and if they had won those 4 games against the bottom 3 teams they would be 11-3, sitting in 1st place. As the Bear has said before 'You gotta love the Yac".

bomber3,
I had that exact same thought in mind as I was writing that post about the game. In fact, as I described the game to several friends, I said to them, "remember Valvano, and NC State, that's what it was like". When someone hits the half-court buzzer beater, it takes a second or two for the result, but the mid-air put back from the front of the rim, occurs so fast it's absolutely stunning.
