Cardinal's Steve Thomas with a 3 pointer with 1:11 to play to give Plattsburgh a 66-63 lead. Chris Ruiz with a steal and Plattsburgh gets the ball with 35 seconds to go. Paul Oliver commits a foul and Plattsburgh Errol Daniyan misses the front end of a 1&1. Cortland comes down and Paul Oliver misses a hook shot and Farris Thomas is fouled by Oliver. He goes to the line and hits the 1st one and Cortland takes a timeout down by 4 with 13 seonds to play. Thomas makes the 2nd and Cortland's Jesse Winter drives the length of the court and lays it in and Cortland takes another time out with 8 seconds left. Plattsburgh inbounds to Steve Thomas and is immediately fouled. Thomas makes 1 0f 2 and The Cardinal come all the way back to beat the Red Dragons 69-65. What a comeback. Chris Ruiz goes over the 1000 point mark with 21 pts and Steve Thomas leads all scorers with 22 points. Dustin Marshall and Ron Evans lead Cortland with 14 pts each and Ben Nagle chips in with 10.

I think the SUNYAC player of the week to be announced on Monday is a no brainer as Plattsburgh's Chris Ruiz led the Cardinals to 2 wins this weekend. He led the conference in scoring with a 25 point effort against Oswego on Friday night shooting 8x10 from the field, 5x5 from 3 point land, and 4x6 from the line. He added 8 rebounds 3 assists 1 block and a steal as the cards won 81-66.

On Saturday afternoon he was instrumental in leading the Cardinals back from a 21 point deficit against Cortland as they went on to defeat the Red Dragons 69-65 and continue their surge toward the top of the SUNYAC standings. Ruiz scored 21 points on 7x13 from the field 3x5 from beyond the arc and 4x4 from the charity stripe. he finished with 4 rebounds 2 assists 2 blocks and a steal.

His basket against Cortland with 3:45 left to play was his final points of the game but it not only tied the score at 61, capping the Cardinals amazing comeback from a 36-15 deficit but it enabled him to become the 12th Men's basketball player in Plattsburgh State's history to score 1000 points. The junior guard now has 1001 career points.

His combined totals in the 2 games this week are as follows;
15 x 23 from the field (65.2%) 46 points for an average of 23 ppg
8 x 10 3 pointers (80%)
8 x10 free throws (80%)
12 rebounds  6.0 average
5 assists    2.5 average
3 blocks
2 steals

Congratulations to Chris for a career milestone and a great weekend.

2009-10 SUNYAC Men's Basketball Standings through 2-13-10

Brockport State         11-4
Oneonta State          11-5
Plattsburgh State      10-5
Cortland State          10-5
Buffalo State            7-8
Fredonia State          7-8
New Paltz State        7-9
Geneseo State          6-9
Oswego State           5-10
Potsdam State          2-13

Any one of the first 4 teams can still win the regular season crown and end up with the top seed. Since Brockport only has 4 losses with 3 games to play everyone else with 8 or more losses is playing for seeding position. Potsdam is the only team eliminated from playoff possibilities.

Anyone care to put forth an opinion on how things will end up?

Bear Fan

I'll let the experts (JDEX and Magic) make the predictions.  I really like the way the Cards are playing right now.  Coach Curle has them playing role oriented basketball and with that talent, they should be able to run the table.  They are a fun team to watch and more explosive than any who have played in Jerry Welsh Gymnasium this season.  Of course the upside for Plattsburgh is that they will be even better next year.  I'm looking forward to seeing Brockport this weekend and only regret (small one considering it will be Senior Day for the Bears and this group deserves our support and encouragement) that I can't make it over to the burgh on Saturday to see what could decide the SUNYAC regular season championship... at least I know where I can get my updates!  Many thanks to you both for keeping Bear and I educated for another season.

Expert? Yeah, sure! We can roll the dice same as you and Magic! And come up with the same cockeyed outlook. One sure thing in the YAC is there's no sure thing. All agreed, methinks. Ups, downs, home wins, road wins . . . can't quite figure the hot teams. At one point thought New Paltz would run the table. And as for our Cortlands? The epitomy of the '09-10 tale. Sweep the Port, win at the Burgh, lose at Pdam, hold leads, lose leads, win at the wire, in OT, lose at the wire. Anyhow, coming down the stretch we like the home squads, and therefore .........

Plattsburgh finishing off 3-0 home week by beating guest Bport to go 13-5
Brockport avoiding looking past the Buffs tonight and winding up  13-5
Oneonta continuing its run of winning the close runs to conclude   13-5
Cortland finding a closing travel itinerary too hazardous, as in 12-6, 11-7

And the tie-breaking crown to Pburgh!

jdex,
I've had similar thoughts since Saturday night but didn't want to jinx the Cardinals.

It's hard to pick Buff St. over Port tonight with the Bengals road record of 2-6, but the front line of Samedi, Carr, and Jackson for the Bengals could give Brockport trouble. If Buffalo St. can shoot just a bit better than they did in their prior matchup with Port they could steal one here. The Golden Eagles could lose this game and still get the top seed by beating Plattsburgh on Saturday.

Tonight's winners:
Buffalo St. over Brockport
Oneonta over Cortland
Plattsburgh over Potsdam
Fredonia over Geneseo
New Paltz over Oswego.

Friday's games:
Brockport over Potsdam
Oneonta over New Paltz
Plattsburgh over Geneseo
Buffalo St. over Cortland
Fredonia over Oswego

Saturday's games
Plattsburgh over Brockport
Cortland over Fredonia
Buffalo St. over Oswego
Geneseo over Potsdam

Bengalsrule,
Back on Jan. 26th you promised me a win tonight when the Bengals visit Brockport. I'm holding you to that promise.

Plattsburgh walks quite the tightrope in Potsdam rivalry, getting E. Daniyan's go-ahead hoop at 0:29. Bears take 75-74 lead on E. Cross trey at 1:02. Free throws by C. Ruiz and S. Thomas fill out Burgh scoresheet. Potsdam tightens things early in second half, then drops off and trails by 61-53 at 9:08. Bears O. Minott, B. Walker and J. McAllister connect to tie at 5:35. White knuckle time till the buzzer. Daniyan with 27 pts(12x17fg); Ruiz 18 pts; Thomas 15 pts. Walker tallies 24 pts(10x14fg) for game Bears; Cross 14 pts. Am sure Magicman will fill in the blanks once he catches his breath!

The game at Memorial Hall in Plattsburgh tonight may have been between  2nd place Plattsburgh State and last place Potsdam State but somebody forgot to tell the Bears that fact as Potsdam came within 29 seconds of pulling off the biggest upset in SUNYAC play this year. Whenever these 2 North Country rivals tangle whether it's on the hardwood or on the ice it's usually entertaining and tonight was no different.

The Cardinals came out of the gate firing up three pointers, as they took their first 6 shots from beyond the arc and hit 4 of them to grab a 12-6 lead 4 minutes into the game. Plattsburgh extended the margin to 21-9 and matched that 12 point advantage, at 24-12 with 12:11 left to play in the 1st half. It would be the largest margin of the game. Potsdam slowly chipped away and with 3:20 left in the half caught the Cardinals at 28-28. Cardinals Errol Daniyan scores 3 baskets in the final 1:42 and the Cards go into the break up 36-30.

Potsdam nearly ties it up again 2 minutes into the 2nd period at 38-37 before Cardinals open up a 7 pt lead 46-39. Back and forth action with Plattsburgh maintaining a 3 to 7 point edge until the 9:00 mark when a Chris Ruiz steal leads to a Farris Thomas dunk that gives the Cards their largest lead of the half at 61-53. Back come the Bears with 9 unanswered points capped by an Olando Minott jumper followed by 2 Minott free throws and the Bears grab the lead for the first time all night 62-61 with 5:35 remaining. Five lead changes and 3 ties would come in the next 5 minutes with the last one occuring when Cards Daniyan scored with 29 seconds left to put the Cards up for good at 76-75. Bears come down for the last shot and Minott is fouled as he goes in for a layup. He goes to the line with 19 seconds left and misses both free throws, Cards Chris Ruiz grabs the rebound, is fouled and makes both free throws to give the Cards a 3 point lead. Bears miss a 3 with 5 seconds to go foul Steve Thomas who makes 1 of 2 for the final of 79-75.

Plattsburgh is led by an Errol Daniyan double-double of 27 pts (12x17 from the field and 3x4 from the line) and 11 rebounds. The Bears really didn't have an answer for the big guy tonight as he scored on a variety of inside moves. Chris Ruiz had 18 pts (6x13 fg, 4x8 3's, 2x2 ft) but had troubles handling the ball tonight as he committed a career high 9 turnovers. Steve Thomas followed with 15 pts (6x11 fg, 2x4 3's, 1x2 ft) along with 5 boards and 3 assists. R.J.Ponesse had 9 pts (4x5 fg, 1x1 ft) 2 boards and 3 assists in 16 minutes. Farris Thomas with 8 rebounds and 5 pts. in 24 minutes. Cards shot 32x59 (54.2%) from the field, 7x19 3's (36.8%) and  8x12 ft (66.7%). Cards out rebounded smaller Bears 37-18 but committed 22 turnovers to only 11 for Potsdam.

Bears were led in the scoring department by Ben Walker with 24 (10x14 fg, 2x3 3's, 2x3 ft). Ed Cross added 14 pts (5x9 fg, 2x4 3's, 2x2 ft) and Olando Minott chipped in with 10 (3x8 fg, 0x2 3's 4x6 ft). Potsdam shot 27x56 fg (48.2%) 6x15 3's(40%) and 15x21 ft (71.4%).

Plattsburgh moves to 11-5 and next up hosts  Geneseo this Friday at 8PM
Potsdam hosts Brockport State also on Friday night.
