Plattsburgh State 80 Western Connecticut State 86

Plattsburgh St. won a lot of games last year on the heroics of Chris Ruiz and Steve Thomas. They were ususally the go to guys during crunch time and will no doubt be the go to guys again this year but tonight wasn't a night that either one will want to remember.  Between the 2 of them they were 7x26 from the field, failed to make a 3 pointer (0x8), and turned the ball over 8 times. I think Thomas had 14 pts and Ruiz scored 8. Cards turned the ball over 27 times but so did Western Ct. Both had an equal number of  rebounds (34) but the Colonials managed a 17-4 run to turn a 41-33 deficit early in the 2nd half into a 5 pt lead at 50-45 with 13:27 left to play. The Colonials steadily increased their advantage until it reached the games largest margin of 12 pts at 72-60 with 6 minutes remaining. Cards closed to within 5, with the ball and a chance to cut it to 2 but of course another turnover and Colonial basket boosted the lead back to 7 with about a minute to play and that was the game. Cardinals 3 bright spots tonight were Errol Daniyan, R.J. Ponesse, and Carl Munnerlyn who all had excellent shooting numbers for the game. Danniyan needed 16 points to reach the 1000 point total for his career and he got it tonight as he led the Cards with 18 markers in 30 minutes. He shot 8x11 from the field, 2x4 from the line and led the Cards in rebounding as well with 8 boards. Ponesse had 16 pts which I think is a carreer high for the big guy and he did it on 7x9 shooting, 2x2 from the line with 0 turnovers in 18 minutes. Munnerlyn also had 16 pts (5x9 fg, 1x4 3's, 5x6 ft) in 32 minutes. The other night the Cards played Lyndon St. and Coach Curle remarked that they (Lyndon St) live and die by the 3. The difference in the game tonight was that Western Ct. lived by the 3 (10x19, 52.6%) and Plattsburgh died by the 3 (2x15, 13.3%) Cardinals will now probably drop out of the Top 25 and will need a nice winning streak and a win in January over Middlebury to climb back into the rankings.

Oswego State edges York (NY) 64-61 to advance to the championship game of their own tournament against Keystone on Saturday at 6 PM.
Lakers up by 16 in the 1st half settle for a 9 pt lead at the break 34-25. York down 38-29 3 minutes into the 2nd period, goes on a 19-5 run to climb in front 48-43. Lakers use 13-0 spurt to go back on top but back comes York with a 9-0 run to regain the lead 57-56 with 2:52 remaining. Still down 61-60 with 23 seconds left Laker's Chad Burridge is fouled and makes both to give Oswego the lead. Laker's Brian Gebhardt grabs his 3rd steal of the game with 9 ticks left and York fouls Sean Michele who knocks down both free throws. York timeout with 8 seconds left to set up a game tying 3 that misses. Chris Gilkes with a double double of 12 pts and 10 rebounds. Burridge with 11 pts, 3 blocks and 4 steals. Jose Uribe and Kevin Kucel both added 10 pts.

BENGALS pull out a solid win over Point Park College - a NAIA Div 2 school. Point Park was led by 2 Div 1 transfers. Jimmy Sherwood ( began his career as a member of the Duquesne Dukes - 3 seasons) led the Pioneers with 26 pts. He was closely followed by Kris Douse ( began college career as a member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers team in 2007-2008 and then transfered to Delaware State for 2 seasons) who chipped in 13 pts and 24 rebounds.

However the BENGALS proved too much for the visitors from Pittsburgh Pa. Jake Simmons (SUNYAC 2009-2010 "Rookie of the year") continued his torrid shooting streak with 29 pts (7 treys). He had 8 treys Tuesday night againest D'Youville college. Backcourt mate Chris Cartwright added 19 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists. Soph- Justin Mitchell added 20 points/6 boards in just 21 minutes of work and lone Senior Glenroy Carr added 15 pts and 9 boards.

Whats really scary is that T. O. Jackson, the BENGALS leading rebounder from 09-10 at 8.1 and 2nd leading scorer at 11.9 has not stepped foot on the court this season due to medical reasons. Mitchell (averaging 13 pt  and 6.5 boards per game in 2 wins) and Junior Ahmed Nagaya (avg 6 boards per ), have done a great job filling in for Jackson.

I can't wait to see what the BENGALS will look like when he comes back. Hopefully before SUNYAC play begins in December!

BENGALS  next play Niagara (Ontario) Sunday in the Championship game of their Cole's Tourney

Geneseo overcomes Mt. St. Mary 81-77, overcoming 76-68 deficit with 11-0 run. J. Drazan 18 pts(5x7fg)

Mt. St. Mary has probably had enough of the SUNYAC what with that 3 pointer at the buzzer by New Paltz on Wednesday to beat them 91-88 and then the big Geneseo 13-1 run to end the game last night after being down by 8 with only 2:49 left to play.

Blue Knights got nice games from freshman starter 6'4" Jordan Jones with 12 pts, 4 boards, 2 steals and a block in team high 29 minutes. Also frosh Connon Fedge, 6'3" guard came off the bench to score 12 points on 5x6 fg, 2x3 ft and 5 rebounds in 16 minutes.

Blue Knights face host Hartwick for the championship of the Tom Greene Tip Off Tournament at 4 PM this afternoon. Hartwick whipped St. Joseph's (Brkln) 102-60 draining 20 3 pointers (a new school record) in the process.

SUNYAC was 5-3 in  Friday's games, but only 3-3 in regional contests. Buffalo St. and Potsdam St. wins were not against a regional opponent. We need to win these out of conference in-region games.

Today's contests: All are in region games except Plattsburgh vs Wheelock

Plattsburgh St vs Wheelock at Manhattenville  3 PM consi

Brockport St vs York (NY)  at Oswego St.  4 PM consi

Oneonta St. vs Messiah at Dickinson  1:30  consi

Potsdam  vs Clarkson  at Clarkson 3 PM Championship

Oswego St  vs Keystone at Oswego St.  6 PM Championship

New Paltz St vs Hamilton at Hamilton  4 PM  Championship

Geneseo St vs Hartwick at Hartwick   4 PM  Championship

Looks like it could be another series of close games. I think it might end up 4-3 in favor of the SUNYAC. 5-2 is possible. Think Plattsburgh, Brockport, and New Paltz will win. Geneseo and Oswego are possible with Potsdam and Oneonta having troubles. Love to be wrong about the Bears and Red Dragons though.

Ketema Brooks dished out a game high 9 assists in 25 mins. Last night Thomas and Ruiz couldn't buy a 3 pointer, while this afternoon they has 9 between them. Plattsburgh improves to 2-1 and is next in action when they host Clarkson College on Tuesday Nov. 23rd at 8 PM.
