Oswego State denied home championship as they drop a close one to visiting Keystone 76-72.

11 ties and 11 lead changes in a hotly contested 1st half that ends in a 41-41 draw. Keystone opens the 2nd period with a 3 pointer but Lakers reel off a 9-1 run to go up 50-45, 3minutes into the half. The Giants go on a 9-0 run of their own to take a 54-50 lead and are never headed again. Giants extend to largest lead of 8 on several ocassions but can't put Oswego away. Lakers pull within 2,  3 times and finally tie it up at 72 with 56 seconds to go. Giants hit a jumper with 28 ticks left and the Lakers come down and misfire with 16 seconds left. Keystone gets a layup with 11 seconds left and Oswego misses again and that's your ballgame.

Chad Burridge had a big night for Oswego as he led all scorers with 25 pts (9x16 fg, 0x1 3's, 7x7 ft) in 35 mins.. Chris Gilkes added 15 pts (6x8 fg, 0x1 3's 3x6 ft) 26 mins and Connor Monaghan chipped in with 10 (4x8 fg, 2x4 3's).

Oswego is off until Sunday Nov. 28th when they travel to Ithaca for a 4 PM start.

Fredonia gets handled by Catholic this evening 71-45. Blue Devils stay close in 1st half only down 28-25 at the break but it turns ugly fast, as Catholic opens the 2nd with a 12-0 spurt to make it 40-25 after 5 minutes of the period. Freds cut it to single digits on a triple by Joe Monahan with 10:52 left and then the Cardinals put them away with a 25-4 run to open up a 30 pt advantage. Kevin Mitchell and Adam Smith with 10 points apiece led the Blue Devils who fall to 0-2.

Nine SUNYAC teams were in action on Saturday (only Buff St. had the day off) and we only managed to go 4-5. Cortland, Geneseo, New Paltz, and Plattsburgh had the wins but Plattsburgh's win was not in region. Brockport, Oneonta, Potsdam, Oswego, and Fredonia suffered losses, with the Blue Devil loss to Catholic (from Washington DC) being an out of region loss. So our regional record today was 3 wins and 4 losses.  That gives us a 2 day regional record  of 6-7. I'll have to check out how SUNYAC teams did between Nov. 15th and 18th to update our conference regional record.

Put this in the category of "the only stupid question is 1 you don't ask"... :(

Magic ... how does the "regional record" impact on SUNYAC? Is it more bids into the NCAA's?? How does 1 find out/determine what is "in region" vs "out of region"???

Thanks for your answers in advance!

P.s. After 5 p.m. today SUNYAC should  be 5 and 5 - Sat/Sun.  BENGALS should beat Niagara (Ont) easily!

Cortland up 27-17 over NYU  at the half in NYU tourney climax ..................and the the lights went out, literally. Teams waiting in darkness for second half ............to be continued ........methinks

Cortland sees NYU come to life to defeat the Red Dragons 70-61. Passive early, NYU jacks up offense with sharp shooting and size edge inside. Hosts 1x15 from beyond the arc in opening period, 7x9 afterward. Still two point game with 2:30 to go

Dragons J. Smith 19 pts(8x19f, 2x5 3s), D. Marshall 15 pts; J. Winter 11 pts; K. McMahon 9 rebs. CState 24x63fg, 8x28 3s, outboarded 39-33, but just 7 turnovers

Fredonia loses to Pitt-Greenburg 62-60 in the consolation game of the Allegheny Tip Off Tournament.

Buffalo St wins their exhibition game against Niagara (Ontario) 86-72.

thebear

Bears still yet to field a full squad.  A Williams and J. Lambert missed Utica game due to various ailments, and 6-5 transfer Brad Drysdale missed the North Country Tournament.  When everyone is healthy, Bears go ten deep with experience and athleticism.

Narrow losses suggest Bears will still be a factor when the SUNYAC starts, as they have a lot of veterans returning and significant size added in 6-5 wide body Duquette, 6-5 athlete Drysdale, and 6-7 first year Colin Peterson.

SUNYAC looks to be wide open this year, I think any team can beat any other team on a given night. and road wins in conference should be the decider.

Plattsburgh loss to W. Conn was a puzzler, as the Cards were expected to be among elite D3 squads in early going,  Really surprised that they blew a working 2nd Half lead.   Perhaps incentive of W.Conn Coaches 500th career win offset talent differential.

Burgh bench was a non-factor, and you won't win in the 'yac if your starters have to do all the scoring.  Ruiz also disappeared, and as a senior AA candidate that can't happen too often.

Bengalsrule,
Was going to post a link to explain what determines a regional game but since D3hoops has changed their front page to the new look the link isn't working. So here goes.
In order to even be considered as a regional game an opponent has to be a member of NCAA Division III. Any games against NAIA teams, NCCAA or D1 or D2 teams do not count.
A game is considered a regional game if the opponent is from your conference. If you play an out of conference opponent there are several ways it is considered to be an in region game:

1. If the opponent is from the same geographical region. In our case we are the East region. Every team in the East region is from New York State with the exception of Stevens which is in New Jersey. When Stevens joined the E8 several years ago they were reclassified and placed in the East region. So any teams from the East region that play each other would be a regional game. Not every New York State team is in the East region however, as a number of the downstate teams in or near NY City and on Long Island are in the Atlantic region. Manhattenville is the only NY State team that is not in the East or Atlantic region as they have been placed in the Middle Atlantic region because of their conference affiliation (MACF) much like Stevens has been placed in the East region.

2. If the teams are within 200 miles of each other according to the NCAA mileage chart. Example: Plattsburgh in the East region plays Middlebury in the Northeast region which is 79 miles away. This is a regional game. If Plattsburgh traveled to Atlantic region team, William Paterson, in Wayne New Jersey it would not be a regional game as the distance between the schools is 291 miles. If Oneonta St. went to play Willie Pat it would be a regional game because the distance between the 2 is only 154 miles. Here is a link to the NCAA mileage chart which will give you the distance between any 2 schools. Put it in your favorites file for future use:

https://web1.ncaa.org/TES/exec/miles

3. If the opponent is from the same NCAA administrative region. In addition to a team being in a geographic region, all teams are also in an administrative region that has been determined by the NCAA. We are in administrative region 2 which consists of New York and Pennsylvania. So it doesn't matter how far away the opponent is as long as they are in NY or Pennslyvania. Plattsburgh can play a team in southwestern Pennslyvania that might be 500 miles away and it would be considered a regional game, but a game in Massachusetts only 215 miles away would not be considered a regional game. Last week Plattsburgh played Western Connecticut St. and Wheelock at a tournament in Purchase NY at Manhattenville College. It doesn't matter where the game was played, only where the schools are located. Western Connecticut is located in Danbury Ct. which is 274 miles from Plattsburgh and in the Northeast region. This is not a regional game for Plattsburgh. Wheelock College also from the Northeast region is in Boston Mass. and is 298 miles from Plattsburgh. This is also not a regional game. Manhattenville is further away from Plattsburgh than either of these 2 schools (302 miles) and is in the Middle Atlantic region, but because Manhattenville is in the same administrative region (region 2, NY and Pennslyvania) it would be considered a regional game if we had played them. (Which we should have if we hadn't missed so damn many threes against Western CT.)  In looking at the team page that D3hoops has set up for Plattsburgh I notice they are showing Wheelock as an out of region game but have listed Western Connecticut as a regional game. I believe that is a mistake and I will try and get it corrected. That is especially important because it would give Plattsburgh an in region loss that would put them at a disadvantage when the NCAA compared them to other regional teams.(Note that the NCAA might not be showing this game as a regional game and it may just be a D3hoops error because of all the changes they are doing to their website.) I know last year there were a number of mistakes that the NCAA had made concerning regional records when the regional rankings came out. If you win your conference and get the automatic bid your regional record may determine where you might play your 1st round game. It also may determine whether you might host a Regional or Sectional. Last year St. John Fisher and Plattsburgh were 1st and 2nd when the final regional rankings were announced. Both of these schools hosted an NCAA Regional. 3 years ago Plattsburgh was the only team in the country with an undefeated regional record. We got a 1st round bye, hosted a 2nd round game and after advancing to the sweet 16 got to host the Sectionals. Just because you have the best regional record doesn't guarantee that you may host, but it helps.
If you don't win the automatic bid from your conference then you hope to receive an at large bid or Pool C and that's where your regional record really comes into play. The higher the ranking is in your region, the quicker you are considered for a Pool C bid. To give you an example: Last year in the East region, Plattsburgh, Nazareth, Medaille, St Lawrence and SUNYIT got automatic bids by winning their conference tournaments. St. John Fisher by virtue of the #1 ranking in the East region recieved a Pool C (at large) bid. The 2nd and 3rd place regional teams were Plattsburgh and Medaille and because they had automatic bids the next team in the regional rankings would be a possiblity for another Pool C bid from the East. Oneonta, by virtue of a better regional record, 21-6 was ranked higher than Ithaca 15-7 and when it came time for an East region team to be up for consideration the Red Dragons were the team on the table and not the Bombers. So the East recieved 2 Pool C bids last year. That's probably about average. Remember there are 8 regions and last year there were 19 Pool C (at large) bids. Some regions may only get 1 Pool C bid while others may get 3 or 4. It varies from year to year based on where the good teams are.

Now that I've typed all this I just found a link to the D3hoops page that I wanted to direct you to in the first place so here it is. It will also answer some other questions you may have regarding Pool B bids and provisional members.

Plattsburgh State's Errol Daniyan, a 1st team All Conference performer last year, has been named as the 1st SUNYAC Player of the Week for the 2010-2011 season. It was long overdue and marked the first time in his illustrious career that he has attained this honor.

From the Plattsburgh website:

Plattsburgh State senior forward Errol Daniyan has started the 2010-11 season off on a good note by becoming the 13th Cardinal to score 1,000 career points over the weekend and Monday he has earned the first men's basketball player of the week award from the State University of New York Athletic Conference.

The Coram product (Longwood High School) averaged 19.3 points while shooting 59 percent (23 of 39) and averaged 8.7 boards in three games during the week, as Plattsburgh finished 2-1. He scored 24 points in a 100-81 victory over Lyndon State (Nov. 15) and 18 points in a close 86-80 loss to Western Connecticut on Friday. Daniyan closed out his week with 16 points and nine boards against Wheelock, an 86-69 win on Saturday.

Currently, Daniyan stands 11th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,018 career points and has his sights set on No. 10 Tom Chapin, who netted 1,040 in the 1960s.

Oneonta falls to 0-3 as they travel to Utica and drop an 80-72 decision. Up by 14 with 7 minutes left in the half and still up by that figure with 3:20 to go Oneonta allows the Pioneers to cut it to 5 at the break, 40-35. Utica quickly ties the game at the start of the 2nd as teams play through 4 ties and 7 lead changes until Utica forges ahead 57-56 with 11 minutes remaining in the game. Pioneers never headed again and hit their free throws down the stretch for final margin of 8 pts.  Brian Hooks with 20, Derek Hahn with 15, and Troy Talbot with 13 pace the Red Dragons. Utica is led by Jeff Patterson with 17 pts. Jeff Ward has a double-double of 15 pts and 10 boards, while Kevin Johnson adds 14 pts. Utica shot 30x58 from the field and the Red Dragons were only 23x60. Pioneers improve to 3-0 and will be back in action on Dec. 1st when they travel to Hamilton to take on the Continentals.
Oneonta is now off until December 3rd when they travel to Potsdam State to take on the Bears as both teams open SUNYAC play.

My beloved Eagles started rather slowly this weekend. I guess it will take a few games to get all the new faces on the same page. I am sure they will be a team to contend with down the road. Coach Dunne and staff will bring them around. Hopefully strong showing vs Fisher tonight. Go Eagles!!!
