It was great to watch my first live game of the season tonight as Plattsburgh finally had a home game after starting the year with 3 straight road contests. Clarkson's Golden Knights fresh off their winning weekend at the North Country Invitational and sporting a 3-0 record made the trip over from Potsdam. Cardinal Coach Tom Curle starting his 8th season at Plattsburgh St. kept his perfect record in home openers intact as he won for the 8th straight year.

Plattsburgh fell behind early as Clarkson hit 4 three pointers in their 1st 8 field goal attempts and the Knights opened up a 15-7 lead. Another Clarkson 3 pointer maintained that 8 pt lead at 20-12 with 11:11 left in the half. Cardinals woke up and went on a 10-0 run that gave them a lead that they extended to 5 as Steve Thomas hit a jumper with 2 seconds remaining to give the Cardinals a 38-33 advantage at the half. Cardinals come out of the break and extend the lead to 8 with a Carl Munnerlyn triple but it would be the only basket Plattsburgh would get in a 6 and a half minute stretch. Clarkson down 2 at 41-39 manages the old 5 pt. play as Rey Jefferson buries a trey, is fouled in the act, goes to the line, misses the free throw but Golden Knights'  Jonathan Hood is there to slam it down for 2 more and a 44-41 Clarkson lead. Shortly after Cards Thomas nails back to back 3 pointers in a 34 second span to give the Cardinals a 5 point lead with 10:55 to go and they  never trail again. Lead extended to 10 on several occasions but Knights refuse to fold and 4 Plattsburgh turnovers in the final 2 minutes keeps it close until the final buzzer.
Cardinals are led by Errol Daniyan, as the reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week had another double-double of 18 pts (8x10 fg, 2x5 ft) and 17 rebounds. Daniyan now moves into sole possession of 10th place on Plattsburgh's all time scoring list with 1036 pts and 10th place on the Cardinal's career rebounding list with 572 boards. Steve Thomas also scored 18 points tonight (7x11 fg, 3x5 3's, 1x5 ft) and had 6 rebounds. Thomas had some dazzling drives to the hoop tonight as he used his athleticism and quickness to just blow by the defender and get to the rim. Chris Ruiz with 13 pts (4x14 fg, 1x6 3's, 4x6 ft, 7 reb, 5 assists, in 37 mins.) still hasn't found the shooting touch that he's known for but his all around game is still hard to beat. Carl Munnerlyn also added 13 pts (4x9 fg, 4x7 3's, 1x1 ft) for the Cards. As a team Plattsburgh shot 28x59 from the field and 8x18 from behind the arc. Free throws were the weak point at 11x21. Turnovers, with 19 tonight remain too high as they need to take care of the ball better. They outrebounded Clarkson 43-32 and had 36 points in the paint to omly 18 for the Knights.

Clarkson placed 3 players in double figures led by Jonathan Hood who was the game's high scorer with 20 points. (7x13 fg, 6x9 ft, 8 reb, 3 steals, in 31 min) Felix Llanos was close behind with 19 pts (6x15 fg, 3x9 3's, 4x5 ft, in 28 min) and Rey Jefferson chipped in with 17 pts (7x13 fg, 3x4 3's, 0x1 ft, in 34 min) Knights shot well in the 1st half but struggled some in the 2nd. They finished with 26x61 fg, 8x20 3's, 10x16 ft, with 17 turnovers.
Game got a little sloppy at times but hey it's early and it was great to see an actual game. College wasn't in session so the attendance was only 272 which was disappointing for your home opener.

Plattsburgh is off until next Tuesday when they travel to Canton to take on North Country rival St. Lawrence. Last year these 2 teams played a great game in Plattsburgh so I expect more of the same next week. Already working on plans to try and make the game. Cards are home again on Friday Dec. 3rd to open defense of their SUNYAC crown against New Paltz, who once again looks to be a contender for that crown. They did suffer their 1st loss tonight though which I would have preferred didn't happen until Dec. 3rd ;D

Check out my post on the Liberty League board about the longest game in Division III history that took place last night between Skidmore and Southern Vermont. They basically decided to play a double-header as it took 75 minutes to decide this SEVEN OVERTIME marathon in favor of the Thoroughbreds 128-123. Score at the end of regulation was 59-59. When was the last time 2 teams each scored more points in overtime than they did in regulation? :o :D  Previous record in D3 was a 5 OT game. Both D1 and D2 have also had 7 OT games.

Here's a link to an ESPN story on the game;

Oswego over Ithaca at the half 46-35. The Lakers were up 34-33 with 4 minutes remaining and go on a 12-2 spurt to close out the half.

Copy of a post I put on the E8 board.

In a mild upset Ithaca loses to visiting Oswego State 95-83. I thought these 2 teams were evenly matched but that the Bombers would prevail on their home court. Oswego  spurt at the end of the 1st half put the Lakers up by 11 at 46-35. Bombers would get it to single digits on numerous occasions even cutting it to 3 a couple of times but Oswego would always build it back up to 10 or 11 pts. The Lakers grabbed their biggest lead with 6:17 remaining at 76-61, only to have Ithaca come fighting back to within 3 once again at 85-82 with 1:15 left. Bombers fouled, Oswego hit both free throws and subsequently went on to hit 10 ft's in a row for your final of 95-83.

Both teams placed 4 players in double figures in the high scoring affair. Oswego's Chad Burridge was the games high scorer with 28 pts and Chad Monaghan was next with 20. Chris Gilkes had 15 and Sean Michele added 11.

Laker outshot the Bombers 49% to 38%, won the battle of the boards 44 to 40, had 12 turnovers to 14 for Ithaca, and 9 steals to 5. Lakers hit 24 of 32 free throws (75%) while Ithaca made 22 of 28 (79%). Oswego shot 7x20 from behind the arc (35%) and the Bombers made 11 of 29 (38%).

Jordan Marcus led the Bombers with 21 pts and Phil Barera had a double-double of 18 pts and 10 rebounds. Andrie Oztemel added 16 pts and Chris Cruz-Rivas chipped in with 15. Sean Rossi dished out 10 assists.

Buffalo State's Jake Simmons, last years SUNYAC Rookie of the year, has been named Week #2 - Player of the week. Congrats to the soph from the Rochester School of the ARTS. Currently Jake is the #1 scorer in SUNYAC by nearly 5 pts a game (26.7 vs #2 Burridge-Oswego @ 21.3).

  What is surprising is that last years #4 scorer and #1 thief (SUNYAC leading 59 steals in 25 games) has picked up right where he left off. And he's is shooting better!! 83% from the field in last weeks victory over a scrappy Pitt-Bradford is a slight indication of what kind of shooter Jake is. Jake is currently 2nd in SUNYAC in steals. The fact that he leads the SUNYAC with has many 3 pointers (18) as the next 2 highest SUNYAC players combined (Thomas - Plattsburgh with 10 and any of the 4 players who are tied with 8) is further indication that he may be well on his way to a stellar year.

Combine that with the fact that he is currently ranked 11th in field goal percentage and, after finishing 4th in mins played last season (33.80), he is currently ranked 3rd (34 mins. per), so he is an Iron Man also. I think Chris Ruiz, and others, may have a serious contender for SUNYAC Player of the Year.

New D3hoops Top 25 out today. No East region team makes the cut. Only East teams mentioned are Plattsburgh State which falls from #22 to #26 with 57 points in the Others Receiving Votes category and New York University which is in the 31st spot with 28 points.

Ithaca led Cortland at the break 36-29. Bombers now up 58-45 with 12 minutes remaining in the game. I didn't think the Red Dragons would win this game. Probably a little Cortaca revenge motivation for the Bombers as well. Live stats are available here:

Cortland beaten at home by Ithaca 84-75 behind monster P. Berara performance. Finishes with 33 pts(16x18fg) and 12 rebs. Has 19 pts in opening half 36-29 IC lead that comes late in the period. This despite 1x18 3s. Dragons ahead 27-26 at four minute mark. Bombers take charge quickly in final half and hike margin to 68-50 at 8:41. Corts rally to single digits in late stages. IC 33x63fg, 6x30 3s but rule inside with 39-27 advantage. J. Marcus 12 pts, S. Rossi 10 pts and 14 assts (bet on it with F. Elia counting), A. Oztemel 10 pts. Cortland gets 23 pts (7x14fg) from D. Marshall thanks to big second half. Adds 2x4 3s, 5 rebs, 5 assts. J. Winter 21 pts(7x17fg). He paces early Cortland respect. Dragons 27x63fg, 6x21 3s
