Nov. 30th schedule: 3 SUNYAC teams in action tonight.

We sure could use a sweep but I don't think that's going to happen.

   Elmira      Fredonia State      7:00 PM

Ithaca      Cortland State      8:00 PM LS A

Plattsburgh State      St. Lawrence      8:00 PM

2 out of 3 aint bad!! ;)

Plattsburgh State once again failed to put a team away when they had them on the ropes. The Cardinals went into the break up by 3 thanks to another Steve Thomas 1st half buzzer beater from behind the arc. That ended a 1st period that featured 5 ties and 7 lead changes. Thomas then opened the second half with another 3 ball 11 seconds in, to give the Cards their biggest lead of the game to that point, 36-30. The Cards were up 42-35 with 13:03 to go but the Saints with a 10-3 spurt, aided by 3 consecutive turnovers by the Cardinals, fought back to tie it up at 45 apiece with 8:28 to play. Plattsburgh regains the lead on another Thomas 3 pointer and the Cards are never caught. There were some anxious moments however as the Cardinals forge an 11 pt. lead, 60-49 with 3 mins remaining only to once again commit 3 straight turnovers and allow the Saints to close within 2 at 60-58 on a Kyle Miller 3 pointer with 1:01 left. Plattsburgh with possession, works the clock down to 33 seconds and misses a layup but Thomas grabs the rebound and is fouled. The Saints had only committed 2 fouls up to that point and the foul on Thomas is their 3rd so he doesn't go to the line. St Lawrence has to foul 4 more times and with all the inbound plays the clock is down to 21 seconds when Chris Ruiz goes to the line and makes both ends of the 1 and 1.  SLU comes down, misses, gets the rebound, and turns it over to make the final score of 62-58. Much closer than it should have been and very remniscent of the Clarkson game in Plattsburgh a week ago when turnovers kept the Golden Knights in a game the Cards should have won by double digits.
Plattsburgh had 18 turnovers tonight and while their defensive effort was better than it's been, Coach Curle is not going to be happy with the turnover numbers. That cetainly contributed to their lowest offensive output of the season. It still goes into the win column though, as the Cards improve to 4-1.

Chris Ruiz led 3 Cardinals in double figures with 16 pts(6x13 fg, 2x7 3's, 2x2 ft, (that were huge), 5 assists in 34 mins.) Carl Munnerlyn scored 16 pts 9(4x7 fg, 3x6 3's, 3x5 ft, in 28 mins) and Steve Thomas added 11 pts(3x8 fg, 3x6 3's, 2x2 ft, 6 reb, in 39 min.) Cards were 22x45 (48.9%) from the field, 9x20 3's (45%) and 9x13 (69.2) from the line. Cards won battle of the boards 30-28 but committed 18 turnovers to only 12 for the Saints.

SLU was led by Ralph Temgoua who was the game's high scorer with 23 pts on 11x14 from the field and 1x3 from behind the arc. he just missed a double-double as he also was the game's leading rebounder with 9 boards. Garrett Sharlow was also in double figures with 12 pts. The Saints face another tough matchup this Friday night as Ithaca comes to town for an 8 PM contest. They then host Elmira on Saturday afternoon at 4 PM.

Plattsburgh State next plays at the friendly confines of Memorial Hall as they open up SUNYAC play this weekend hosting New Paltz on Friday night at 8 PM and Oneonta Saturday afternoon at 4 PM. New Paltz is off to a decent start with a 3-1 record, with their only loss to a Keene St. team that brought in several outstanding transfers. Last year the The Cards beat the Hawks in New Paltz only to have the tables turned as New Paltz came into Memorial Hall last January and beat Plattsburgh. The Cardinal did win the rubber match in the 1st round of the conference playoffs in February. Both teams return a lot of veterans so it should be a good matchup. Oneonta lost quite a bit off last year's team and they have started slowly with an 0-3 record but nothing will get a team up like playing the defending champs. These will be the final games of the 1st semester as Plattsburgh is then off until January 4th when they host the 6th ranked MIddlebury Panthers. Hopefully Plattsburgh can move back into the rankings with a weekend sweep and the January 4th game will feature 2 Top 25 teams.

December 1st schedule: 2 SUNYAC teams in the Wendy's Classic.

Brockport vs R.I.T.         at Geneseo           6 PM

Hobart  @ Geneseo            8 PM

Both games will be tough for the YAC teams.  Don't think Geneseo will be able to stay with Hobart. Hopefully Brockport can give us a split.

Yes, I just spotted that on the scoreboard. Geneseo is up by 2 over Hobart at the half as well, 27-25. Hope the Blue Knights make me regret my Hobart pick.

Geneseo hangs with Hobart for most of the game as neither team could build more than a 6 pt advantage. Score is still tied at 55 with 2:15 to play when old fashioned 3 pt play by Matt Pebole gives the Statesmen a lead they wouldn't surrender. After a layup by Blue Knights' Mike Hoy cuts it to 1, but Hobart's Mark Bruce buries a 3 to make it 61-57 with 1:18 to go. A Geneseo miss followed by another Hobart basket puts the lead at 6 but the Blue Knights get within 2 with 14 seconds left. They put Hobart on the line and the shooter misses the front end, Geneseo gets the rebound and a chance to tie or win it but turns the ball over with 3 seconds to play. Pebole hits both free throws for the final margin.
Mike Hoy led Geneseo and was the game's high scorer with 19 pts (8x13 fg, 1x3 3's, 2x2 ft) in 30 minutes.
Geneseo loses their 1st game of the year and now stands at 3-1. The Blue Knights will now face off against St. John Fisher on Friday at Hobarts gym at 8 PM. Fisher lost to Rochester tonight 70-56.

Hobart placed 3 guys in double figures led by Matt Pebole with 13. Stefan Thompson and Mark Bruce both added 10 pts. The Statesmen improve to 4-1 on the year.
Hobart will play Rochester on Friday Night at Roberts Wesleyan at 6 PM

Simmons named ECAC Player of the Week

Posted today on the SUNYAC website.....

Buffalo State's Jake Simmons (Rochester/School for the Arts) has been named the Men's Upstate Basketball Player of the Week by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for the week ending November 28th.

(3rd paragraph)
...Simmons leads the SUNYAC through 3 games, averaging 26.7 points-per-contest, and has also hit a leaque best 18 3 pointers. He is also 2nd in the conference, averaging 3.0 steals-per-game

Less than 4 years ago Jake spent nearly 1 month in the hospital, partially paralized, following a nearly tragic accident. Everyone knows someone who has their rags to riches story, but folks close to the BENGALS program know that there is no 1 in recent BENGAL memory who has endured more than Jake has over the past 5 years.

Kudo's to this hard working young man!

Plattsburgh State hasn't played a solid game of basketball yet this year. And tonight's contest against New Paltz was no different. The Cardinal's did however manage to get it together for the 1st half as they came out of the gate firing on all cylinders. Led by Errol Daniyan's 8 points the Card's grabbed a 10 pt lead, 15-5 with only 4 minutes gone in the opening stanza. Plattsburgh's Chris Ruiz found his shooting touch going 4x6 with a pair of threes and the team shot 17x32 from the field.(53.1%) They were 5x11 from beyond the arc and 10x12 from the charity stripe. The Cardinal's stretched the lead to 15, 27-12 with 9:20 left in the half, thanks to Josh Bruno who came into the game, promptly proceeded to drain a three, and scored again on a layup 20 seconds later. The lead reached the largest of the half with 1:45 left when Daniyan was clobbered by the Hawks Lamard Herron as he was going up for an easy lay in. An intentional foul was called and the easy going big guy who was visibly angry with the hard foul shook off the hit to make both free throws for a 49-24 Plattsburgh lead. The Hawks did manage to cut it to a 20 pt. deficit when Harris Wichard nailed a 3 and Nick Taldi canned a pair of foul shots to go into the break only down 49-29. Defensively the Cardinals were just as impressive as they held the #1 offense in the conference to 29 points. The Hawks have been averaging 84.2 ppg. They also shut down their top 2 scorers Shareef Taylor and Matt Devine, who are both averaging 17 ppg. They had a combined 3 points in the half. Plattsburgh nearly doubled the Hawks rebound total with a 25 to 13 edge. Turnovers were the only blemish on the Cardinal's 1st half stat sheet as they committed 10 but so did New Paltz.

The second half started like the 1st one as Plattsburgh quickly built their lead to a game high 26 pts at 57-31. But as we've seen so many times at so many levels of play (and what's becoming a routine for this year's Cardinals) is the big lead seems to cause a deterioration in play. The shot selection is noticeably poorer, the extra pass is not made, or a crazy cross court pass that shouldn't be made is, resulting in the break away layup. The "it's my turn to shoot" syndrome is usually factored in there as well. So that 26 point lead, with 16:49 to play in tonight's game is cut to 17 by 13:41. 4 points by Shareef Taylor and 6 points by Harris Wichard, sandwich a Chris Ruiz layup, and the Hawks cut the lead to 8 at 62-54 with 8:52 remaining. Less than a minute later another bucket and 1 by Wichard cut it to 7 but the Cards would turn the switch back on. A Carl Munnerlyn trifecta, followed by an R. J. Ponesse layup on a Steve Thomas feed, plus another Munnerlyn 3 point play off a Ponesse rebound and feed build the Cards lead back to 15 at 72-57 with 6:26 to go. The Hawks answer that with 8 straight points of their own fueled by Matt Devine and trail 72-65 with just over 4 minutes left. That was as close as they would get though as Munnerlyn is fouled shooting a three and drops 2 of 3, Thomas is fouled and makes both his foul shots, then Ketema Brooks steals the ball and drives in to score and Munnerlyn is there for the putback. In 28 seconds the lead is back to 13 and the Cardinals coast to the 87-73 final.

Carl Munnerlyn led Plattsburgh and was the game's high scorer with 23 pts (6x10 fg, 3x4 3's, 8x11 ft, 5 reb, 3 assists, 2 steals in 32 min). Errol Daniyan was nearly perfect shooting the ball tonight as he scored 22pts.(9x10 fg, 4x5 ft, 8 rebounds 32 mins). Chris Ruiz had 18 pts (7x10 fg, 3x4 3's, 4 reb, 4 assists, in 34 min) and Steve Thomas added 9 pts and 7 boards in 33 min. R. J. Ponesse only scored 4 pts but had 7 rebounds 3 assists and a block in 20 minutes of work. On 3 or 4 occassions just his presence made the New Paltz shooters miss some in close shots. Josh Bruno came off the bench to give the Cards a quick lift and ended up with 7 pts and 4 rebounds in 14 mins. Cardinals ended up shooting 28x53 from the field (52.8%), 8x19 from 3 point land (42.1%) and 23x30 from the foul line (76.7%). They had 41 rebounds to 32 for the Hawks but also had more turnovers, 18, than New Paltz who had 14.

New Paltz was led in points and rebounds by 6 foot Harris Wichard who tied Munnerlyn for scoring honors with 23 (8x16 fg, 3x9 3's, 4x5 ft)and had 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in 34 mins. Nick Taldi was the only other Hawk in double figures with 16. (5x12 fg, 3x7 3's, 3x3 ft in 28 mins). Shareef Taylor and Matt Devine who combine to average 34.3 ppg only managed 13 between them on a combined 4x21 from the field and 0x6 from behind the arc. As a team the Hawks shot 24x68 from the field (35.3%), 7x27 from behind the arc (25.9%) and 18x21 from the line (85.7%)

Oneonta rolls into Plattsburgh tomorrow fresh off their victory over Potsdam tonight. Game time is 4 PM. Cardinals improve to 5-1 and a win tomorrow against the Red Dragons would leave them with a 6-1 mark heading into the semester break and should be good enough to push them back into the D3hoops Top 25 as #22, #24, and #25 all lost games this week.

New Paltz now stands at 3-2 on the season and travels to Potsdam to try and salvage their trip North. I think the Bears will be in trouble tomorrow afternoon as Taylor and Devine will both look to break loose.
