magicman... In your humble opinion..why is Ithaca is ranked and Oswego is not? They both have 3 losses...Oswego beat Ithaca by 12 at Ithaca and Oswego recently beat Plattsburgh  :( ( sorry about that reminder) which was ranked for a considerable amount of time.

Also is there anyway to find a teams strength of schedule???

With roughly a 3rd of the SUNYAC schedule completed, a prediction for the WESTERN NEW YORK brackett of SUNYAC tonite!

Bengals 85-Geneseo 67
Brockport 77-Fredonia 66

jdex

Been awhile .......slowly getting there. Nice to see Magic on the ball, as usual, along with other regulars ......

Believe setbacks to St. Lawrence and Oneonta haven't helped Oswego ranking cause. Those coming after nice, but early, beating of IC

Bigger question from this corner is why Buff State isn't more of a major force. We look at personnel and say wow!! Can't quite win over the good foes. Of course, Pburgh hasn't exactly lived up to reputation, either, but Cards have played rugged slate. Oswego w/Burridge getting it done.  Oneonta lurking along with the decent Port.

And from the bottom feeders ......one has to be the eighth playoff seed. Not discounting our Corts even with last season All-SUNYAC D. Marshall no longer on roster and impact frosh K. McMahon currently sidelined for whatever .....

Bengalsrule,
jdex has already given you a major reason why Oswego isn't ranked. Both of those losses were to teams that had pretty bad records at the time of the loss. St. Lawrence was only 3-6 and Oneonta was 4-7. The timing of Oswego's losses also played a big factor as I'll try to explain. The Top 25 poll for week 4 was through games of 12-19-10. Oswego had a 6-1 record and no reason to be getting any national attention. The next poll wasn't done until 2 weeks later because of the holidays and Oswego was idle, so a 6-1 record wasn't as noticeable to the voters when plenty of teams had played  much heavier schedules. Many schools took trips to the warmer climates or participated in holiday tournaments and most of the ranked schools (19 of 25) had played from 10 to 13 games.  Only Plattsburgh State with a 6-1 record was in the week 5 Top 25 poll with as few as 7 games played and they were slowly sinking as they had been idle for 30 days. Oswego finally plays a game on January 5th and that was the loss to St. Lawrence, followed by the win over Cortland. The week 6 poll was through games of January 9th and the voters aren't going to replace a team in the top 25 with a team that has just went 1-1 since the last poll. Had they won both of those games to go to 8-1, I think they would have recieved some support and been listed under "other receiving votes".  The week 7 poll (the current one) is for games of January 10th through the 16th. Again the Lakers lose this time to a 4-7 Oneonta team on the 11th, and the voters once again look elsewhere. If Oswego had been receving some support earlier, a 2-1 week, which is what they had, with a win over Plattsburgh, might have kept them in the ORV category and still on people's radar.  Ithaca got into the Top 25 at just the right time. They were coming off 9 wins in a row, had just beaten a top rival St John Fisher, and had put up between 94 and 107 points on the board in 7 straight games. Both of their losses were early in the season and both teams that beat them were decent teams. (Oswego was 7-2, and Penn St.-Behrend was 11-1 at the time Ithaca first appeared in the Top 25.) For all of those reasons they got the attention of the voters who are looking for  other teams to rank, when the ones in the lower part of the poll that are ranked, aren't performing well enough to keep their ranking.  As it is, like I mentioned in my earlier post, it will take a nice winning streak, before any other team in the East region, gets some love in the polls. Hope this gives you some insight as to why Oswego isn't getting the attention that Ithaca is, despite the Bomber loss to the Lakers.

Ethelred has given you the link to the Massey ratings which is where I would have sent you as well. They are helpful but they are somewhat biased toward certain conferences, which kind of skews the strength of schedule figures a bit.

Well it is certainly good to see you have returned. I was getting worried about you. I hope the problems you spoke of earlier were not health related to you personally. Although it's just as bad if it's a loved one. Please PM me if you wish to discuss it.
Hopefully you can infuse some good luck into your Red Dragons.

They must have been sprinting up and down the floor in Buffalo tonight as the Bengals outrun the Geneseo Blue Knights 112-104. I think the 216 points scored might hold up as the highest total in a SUNYAC game this season.

Bengals led for most of the game jumping out to an 11 point advantage midway through the first half but Geneseo came back to within 1 at 38-37 with 4:29 left in the period. Buffalo St. went back up by 13 and settled for a 10 point lead at the break. While the Bengals never lost the lead again they couldn't quite put the game away despite leading by as much as 17 points on several ocassions, the last time with 8:15 to play. Geneseo came back from that deficit to close to within 2 possessions at 95-89 with 3:14 remaining, but Bengals went 7x10 at the line and hit their last 4 field goal attempts to close out the game.

Buffalo St had 5 guys score in double figures led by Jake Simmons and Glenroy Carr with 20 apiece. Simmons was 7x16 fg, 3x10 3's and 3x4 from the line with 3 assists and 3 steals in 37 minutes. Carr had a double-double as he grabbed 10 rebounds to go with his 20 points (9x12 fg, 2x3 ft). Both Justin Mitchell (7x8 fg, 3x8 ft) and T.O. Jackson (7x11 fg, 3x3 ft) had 17 points each with Jackson also getting a double-double as he had 10 boards. Chris Cartwright added 16 points (4x11 fg, 3x8 3's, 5x6 ft) and 8 assists. Bengals shot 55.4% from the field (41x74) but only 28.6% from long distance (6x21) and 64.9% (24x37) from the line.  They beat the Blue knights off the glass with a 42-31 edge but did have 21 turnovers to 18 for Geneseo.

Blue Knights got a huge game from Jordan Jones, the game's leading scorer with 34 points (13x19 fg, 8x12ft), 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals in 33 minutes. Mike Hoy, with another solid outing had 23 points (8x11 fg, 1x2 3's, 6x8 ft), 4 assists and 4 steals. Abe Miller had 14 points (7x13 fg) and Connor Fedge was almost perfect with 11 points (4x4 fg, 3x4 ft). Geneseo had an excellent night shooting the rock from the field as they were 41x65 (63.1%). They only took 3 shots from behind the arc all night and made 1 of them. Can't remember when I saw a statistic for 3 point attempts that low. Blue Knights shot better from the field than the free throw line as they hit only 60% from the line (21x35).

Buffalo State improves to 3-3 in the conference and 8-4 overall. They are tied with Potsdam for 6th place and will look to move ahead of the Bears as they take them on this Friday evening in Potsdam at 8 PM. Then they head on over to Plattsburgh to renew their battles with the Cardinals. Last year they split with Plattsburgh with each team winning on their home court. Bengals won an overtime battle in Buffalo 90-87 and the Cardinals won in Plattsburgh 88-86 on a Steve Thomas midair putback at the buzzer.

Geneseo drops to 1-5 in conference play and 7-6 overall they are now tied with Cortland for 9th place in the SUNYAC standings. Geneseo will try and break that tie with Cortland this weekend as they host Oswego on Friday night at 8 PM and Cortland on Saturday afternoon at 4PM. With Fredonia's upset of Brockport on Tuesday evening the race for the 8th and final playoff spot just got a little tougher for both the Blue Knights and the Red Dragons.

Brockport traveled to Fredonia looking to move into a 1st place tie with Oswego for the SUNYAC lead. The Blue Devils had other ideas though and after falling behind 38-31 at the half came storming out of the break, outscoring the Eagles 25-11 after the 1st 9 minutes of play to turn that 7 point deficit into a 7 point advantage. After that, Brockport never got closer than a 2 possession margin. After cutting a 10 point lead down to 5 at 73-68, with 2:43 left to play, the Eagles failed to score another point, as they either misfired or turned the ball over in their final 5 attempts. The Blue Devils increased their lead until the final score of 82-68 was the largest advantage of the game by either team.

Devils had 4 players reach double figures topped by a big game from Joseph Monahan who led all scorers with 26 points (9x15 fg, 3x6 3's, 5x5 ft). Branden McKenney had 16 pts (6x8 fg, 1x1 3's, 3x3 ft), and Adam Smith had 14 pts with 8 rebounds. Damien Goodwin added 14 points. Blue Devils shot 55.4%(31x56) from the field, 42.9% (6x14) from 3 point land and 60.9% (14x23) from the foul line. Fredonia won the rebounding battle 35-25 and both teams committed 14 turnovers.

Brockport's leading scorer was Kyheem Green with 21 points (7x14 fg, 1x4 3's, 6x7 ft). John Ivy added 13 and Gerald Williams had 11. Eagles shot 45.2% (19x42) from the field, 26.7% (4x15) and 81.3% (26x32).

Fredonia opens up a little breathing room for the 8th and final playoff spot as they go to 2-4 in SUNYAC play (3-7 overall) and are now a full game up on Geneseo and Cortland. This weekend they head north to play Plattsburgh on Friday night at 8 PM and then travel to Potsdam for a Saturday afternoon 4PM game

Eagles fall to 4-2 in the conference and are tied for 2nd with Plattsburgh. They also drop below .500, to 6-7, and see their 3 game win streak come to an end.
Next up they host Cortland on Friday night at 8 PM followed by a visit from top ranked Oswego on Saturday afternoon at 4 PM. This will be the game of the week in the YAC.

"Sprinting up and down" and not playing DEFENSE!!! 120 points scored in the 2nd half alone by both teams. Heck, my  beloved BENGALS held Fredonia to 54 for the entire game last Tuesday and then give up 61 in 1 half (2nd) to Geneseo! ???. Trust me when I tell you that Coach Ansari will not see another defensive performance like that in 2011! >:( .

This was probably the eye opener we needed before we head to the North country this weekend to face Potsdam and your BELOVED Cardinals! Good we got this 1 out of our system! : ;)

I followed my own advise and spent some time at Massey last night.  It was interesting to go back and check schedules from years past.  U of r played Central Mich for 3 years in the late 90's as well as U Buffalo.  Schedule was peppered with a lot more out of area teams.  I suspect the reduction in that kind of schedule would be due to the requirements of UAA travel.  Also fun to look at Utica's schedule when they were D1

Jdex... those of us who love the BENGALS say the same thing from time to time.... ???. I do believe in my heart  that the BEST is YET To COME with my beloved BENGALS. Undoubtly, IMHO, the BENGALS are the most talented team in the SUNYAC! But just like the Miami Heat have had to find the right mix... the BENGALS are going through the same thing. Figuring out the right chemistry coupled with some injuries has been the main drawback.

Today is the midpoint of the BENGALS season and at 8-4 the future looks brighter than the past. T. O. Jackson has worked himself back into shape after being injured for over a month. Newcomer Chris Cartwright has found his niche within the team and Captains Glenroy Carr and Norman Simmons are starting to show the league why they are BENGAL captains. Having a healthy Jake Simmons, who is just about recovered from minor surgery, will also be a big plus .  :D. Soph - Justin Mitchell (SUNYAC #2 Shot blocker) is on the cusp of being a ALL SUNYAC ball player!(remember you heard that here first!!!). And a bench led by Junior-Ahmed Nagaya, Frosh - Nico Mclean, Sophomore(s) - Seth Runge and "Ant" Hamer... is starting to pay big dividends,

It is my hope is that this weekend (in the North Country vs. Potsdam/Plattsburgh) and next weekend (in Central New York vs. Oswego/Cortland) the BENGALS will begin to show thier true form!

JDEX...Come SUNYAC playoff time I truely believe that you will see the BENGALS team that you expected to see by now!

That's quite a honor for Chad/Oswego! D3 team 2 weeks in a row and no other SUNYAC player has gotten it once.
Has a SUNYAC player ever gotten that honor?

P. S. Magicman. Will you be in Memorial hall  this Saturday afternoon  around hmmmmm  4 p.m.?

Bengalsrule,
If a decent Buffalo State team shows up I plan to be there. :D  The way I look at this game is that the Bengals are the favorites and Plattsburgh is the underdog. After all, Buff State did beat Elms on a neutral court, and we couldn't beat them  on our home court. ;D  Are you planning to make the trip? I believe back in December I heard some rumblings from you about traveling to Plattsburgh for the game. ???

I think Plattsburgh's Anthony Williams and/or Travis Gorham made the D3hoops team of the Week a few years ago and I know current Cardinal, Carl Munnerlyn, made it last year.
