Plattsburgh State's Chris Ruiz is this week's SUNYAC Player of the Week. Congratulations Chris.
Chris is the 3rd different Cardinal(Carl Munnerlyn, twice and Errol Daniyan) and 4th time this season that a Plattsburgh State player has won the weekly honors

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website. Hope they change the fact that he doesn't play for Buff State. :D

Wow magic. As of 1:15 am they still have Ruiz listed as a member of the Buffalo State team. Maybe it's a precursor for Chris Cartwright, who had 39 against Geneseo tonite! If the BENGALS Chris can duplicate that effort against Oneonta/New Paltz at home this weekend then maybe next Monday there will be Player of the Week who plays for Buffalo State named "Chris"  ;).

If I ever had a SUNYAC fantasy team both "Chris's" would be on my team :)

Just back from the Plattsburgh-Potsdam game which Plattsburgh won 80-71.
Live stats for the game are way off as the score is incorrect and the players have the wrong point totals.

Plattsburgh grabbed the lead right out of the gate and led by 10 quick points from Chris Ruiz built an 11 point advantage 23-12 with 10:17 left in the half. The Bears hung tough behind the play of Curtis Pierce and Tony Efese and got it back to within 4 at the 5:46 mark. A pair of free throws by John Perez gave the Cards a 6 point lead 36-30 with 16 seconds to play but the Bears would cut it to 3 on a beautiful 3 point buzzer beater that left the hand of Anthony Williams a tenth of a second before the horn sounded. I'm not sure if the game was being videotaped but this would be one for the D3hoops Buzzer Beater features if it was.

Teams came out of the break and traded baskets until, with 90 seconds gone in the period, the Bears would claim there first lead of the game at 40-39 on a bucket by Curtis Pierce. The Cardinals would regain control and over the next 4 minutes built an 8 point lead. Potsdam would not fold however, even when the lead again reached double digits at 63-53 with 8:34 remaining and 66-56 with 7:39 left. Eddie Cross came off the bench to give the Bears a big lift as he hit 3 long range bombs in a 3 minute span, the last of which tied the score at 70-70 with 3:46 to go. Errol Daniyan hit a layup to give the Cards the lead and after a Potsdam misfire, Steve Thomas drained a pair of free throws to up the lead to 4. Potsdam would then turn the ball over leading to another foul of Thomas, who calmly hit both of those to make it 76-70. Potsdam goes to the line with 1:28 left, hits the first, misses the 2nd, gets the rebound, is fouled again and this time the  Potsdam player misses both free throws. They were the 5th and 6th consecutive free throws that this player missed. Cardinals rebound and Thomas hits another pair at the charity stripe and after another Potsdam miss Cards Carl Munnerlyn is fouled and he hits 2 more free throws to close out the scoring. So the game was closer than the final score would indicate as it was anybodys game with 3:46 left to play and a tie score. Free throws cost the Bears as they only hit 11 of 28 (39.3%). Plattsburgh managed to sink 23 of 30. (76.7%) which provided the margin of victory.

Cardinals were once again led by the reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week Chris Ruiz with 19 points (7x11 fg, 2x5 3's, 3x4 ft) and 6 rebounds. Chris shared the scoring honors with Potsdam's Curtis Pierce who also had 19 points (8x12 fg, 3x7 ft) and 6 boards. Plattsburgh placed 3 others in double figures as Freshman Shavar Fields had a new career high of 14 points (5x8 fg, 4x6 ft) in only 21 minutes of action. Both Steve Thomas and Errol Daniyan added 12 points and 5 boards. R.J. Ponesse added 9 points and 4 rebounds in only 11 minutes of work.

Bears also had 3 other players in double digits besides Pierce. Eddie Cross finished with 13 points (5x10 fg, 3x4 3's), while Anthony Williams and Tony Efese both scored 12 points with 7 rebounds.

Plattsburgh improves to 13-5 on the season and maintains a strong hold on 2nd place on the conference with a 9-2 record. The Cardinals head west this weekend for a rematch with Brockport on Friday and Geneseo on Saturday.

Potsdam falls to 6-12 on the season and is holding on to sole possession of 6th place in the conference with a 5-6 mark. The Bears are also heading west as they take on Geneseo and then Brockport.

Oswego 81 Oneonta 70

Lakers gain measure of revenge over solitary SUNYAC loss at the hands of the Red Dragons earlier in the season. Chad Burridge and company too much for Oneonta as they lead from the opening bell, quickly go up by double digits, and are never really threatened. Up by 13 at the break they extend 2nd half bulge to 20 and coast home to victory. Burridge with 18, Ryan Sheridan with 16, Sean Michele and Hayden Ward with 13 each.

Derek Hahn is the leading scorer in the game with 21 points and snares 11 rebounds for a double-double. Three point shooter Brian Hooks drains 4 of 6 from long distance and ends up with 16 points. Troy Talbot adds 14 and Shane Gillette chips in with 12.

Oswego is now 15-3 on the year and 11-1 in the YAC. Next up for the Lakers is a home game this Friday at 8 PM against travel partner Cortland.

Oneonta is now 6-13 on the year and 5-7 in the conference. They head west this weekend to tackle Buffalo St. and then Fredonia.

Brockport 69 Fredonia 44

This game  was a mismatch from the gitgo as the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 16-2 lead and it only got worse for the Blue Devils from there. Up by 19 at the half, 36-17, Brockport would quickly stretch it to 30 early in the 2nd stanza. it got as high as 37 on several occasions, as Coach Dunne emptied his bench and the Eagles cruised home.

Gerald Williams was the games leading scorer with 20 points. (6x11 fg, 5x7 3's, 3x4 ft) in only 24 minutes of action. Freshman John Ivy added 13 and Kyheem Green had 10.

Branden McKenney led the Blue Devils with 12 points (4x7 fg, 4x5 ft) and Adam Smith had 10 94x5fg, 2x6 ft). Fredonia's leading scorer Joseph Monahan was held in check by Brockport's defense as he only tallied 2 points.

Eagles await return engagement with Plattsburgh this Friday and Potsdam this Saturday. They evcen their record at 9-9 and are in sole possession of 3rd place in the SUNYAC with a 7-4 record.

Fredonia drops to 5-13 overall and 2-10 in league play. They are now in 10th place and have 2 more losses than the 9th place team. Blue devils will host New Paltz and then Oneonta this weekend and will need to get something started to avoid missing the playoffs.

Buffalo St. 101  Geneseo St 94.

Well they didn't put up the 216 points they did 2 weeks ago but they came pretty darn close. What I can't understand is how no one managed to score a point in the last 2:04 of regulation. Bengals fight back from the largest deficit of the game which was the halftime score of 38-25, by outscoring the Blue knights 16-3 to start the second period.  Geneseo looks to regain the advantage and put the Bengals away but after going back up by 7 they allow Buffalo St. to tie it up at 71 with 3:35  remaining. From that point through the end of the first overtime nobody could gain much of an advantage. Bengals did open the 1st overtime with 5 straight points, only to have Geneseo come back with 5 straight points of their own to knot it up at 80 apiece. They trade baskets until they head into extra session #2. Again back and forth action until tied at 94 with 59 seconds left Chris Cartwright nails one from long distance and after Geneseo fails to score on their possession they have to foul and Cartwright sinks both free throws to ice it for the Bengals.
Cartwright had a monster night as he shot 11x21 from the field, 5x11 from behind the arc and 12x14 from the line to total 39 points, which I believe is the biggest number put up this year in a conference game. He just missed a double-double as he had 9 rebounds and also had 4 assists, while playing 48 out of the game's 50 minutes. Four other Bengal players had double figures with Glenroy Carr(6x10 fg, 3x6 ft, 4 reb) and Justin Mitchell (7x8 fg, 1x2 ft, 8 reb) scoring 15 each. Jake Simmons had 11 and Ahmed Nagaya added 10.

Geneseo also placed 5 players in double digits with Jordan Jones leading the way with 26 (9x17 fg, 8x10 ft). Connor Fedge scored 17 points(6x12 fg, 5x9 ft),  Mike Hoy had 11 points and John Drazen also had 11 points.  Abe Miller managed a double-double with 16 points  (8x10 fg) and 10 boards.

Buffalo State ups their record to 12-6 and is now in sole possession of 4th place in the conference with a 7-5 record. They will host Oneonta, then New Paltz this coming weekend and will be looking to improve their chances for a first round home game in the playoffs. A sweep of those two games would certainly give them a leg up. New Paltz currently holds the tiebreaker over the Bengals by virtue of that huge comeback 86-85 win the Hawks had back in early January.

Geneseo's once promising season continues to go south, as the Blue Devils fall to 8-10 on the year. Their conference slate, now 2-9, puts them alone in the 9th spot, but they are closer to 10th place than they are to 8th. Potsdam, then Plattsburgh roll into town this coming weekend.

There was a full schedule of games tonight in the SUNYAC but the New Paltz-Cortland game has been postponed and will be made up on next Tuesday Feb. 8th.

New Paltz State   @   Cortland State      Postponed

Fredonia State   @   Brockport State      8:00 PM
Brockport will have revenge in mind against the Blue Devils. Fredonia's victory 2 weeks ago was only their first over the Golden Eagles in their past 10 meetings. I don't think they can do it twice in a row Port will take this one 77-63.

Buffalo State   @   Geneseo State      8:00 PM
Bengals look for season sweep of Blue Knights. These 2 teams put  216 points on the board 2 weeks ago. A bit less tonight but Bengals will still win it 88 -81

Oneonta State   @   Oswego State      8:00 PM
Oneonta has won the last 3 times these teams have met. Lakers end the losing streak tonight as they take down the Red Dragons 75-66

Potsdam State   @   Plattsburgh State      8:00 PM
Anything goes when these 2 North Country rivals meet, evidenced by the fact that they are 7-7 in their last 14 meetings. This is their 1st meeting this year and the Cards will come out on top 82-70.

Brockport 69 Fredonia 44
I predicted a little more scoring and not quite as big a MOV but pretty much what I expected.

Buffalo St 101 Geneseo 94
You'd think with all the points these 2 teams have put up in their last 2 meetings that somebody could have scored a few points in the final 2:04 of regulation. had they done that they'd have been pretty close to my predicted 169 total points. Even the end of the 1st OT a winner would have been around 173 points. i would have taken that. ;D

Oswego St 81 Oneonta 70
Each team got a few more than I guessed and my MOV was within a basket. I'll take it!

Plattsburgh 80 Potsdam 71
My closest prediction of the night. I actually had 2 chances to get an 82-71 final and only miss by a point. Cardinal big guy Errol Daniyan missed 2 free throws with 15 seconds left that would have given me the exact Plattsburgh total. I'm talking to Coach Curle about some laps to be run for that. And then with 8 seconds left Chris Ruiz steals the ball, heads toward the Plattsburgh basket like he might try to dunk it or lay it in, but just pulls up and dribbles the clock out. (With me yelling I need two more Chris, I need two more.) But it was the right thing for Chris to do. Chris may regret giving those points up though as he's closing in on another milestone on Plattsburgh's all time scoring list. Chris just moved into 3rd place all time and has his sights set on Larry Parker's 2nd place position. He needs 138 points to move ahead of Larry and I think he can do it.

4-0 with my picks Tuesday night.

All ten teams in action tonight. All 8PM starts

Cortland State   @   Oswego State      8:00 PM
Red Dragons can't match Oswego's firepower. Lakers take this one 76-63.

New Paltz State  @    Fredonia State      8:00 PM
New Paltz hoping for a top 4 finish, can't let this game slip away. Hawks win 72-67.

Plattsburgh State  @    Brockport State      8:00 PM
Golden Eagles came north a month ago and took down the Cardinals. Hopefully it's payback time. Plattsburgh wins a close one 84-80

Oneonta State  @    Buffalo State      8:00 PM
Bengals with some payback as well. Oneonta only 1-7 on the road.  Buffalo State wins another defensive battle 86-80. ;D

Potsdam State   @   Geneseo State      8:00 PM
The Potsdam team I saw on Tuesday should win this game but they struggle on the road. I hope I'm wrong on this one but think the Knights pick up a close win here 69-65.
