Well Champ, I don't know what your reaction is to the Bengals draw but other than the 374 miles to Ramapo College I think you got a decent draw. You managed to avoid all 3 of the NESCAC schools for the first 3 games and you didn't get shipped south into Wooster's bracket. I think Buffalo St. can play with any of the schools in this pod.
Your first round game against Gwynedd-Mercy is a team that the Bengals should match up well against. They aren't any bigger than the Bengals and seem to play a similar style of ball as they average 81 ppg. Johnson & Wales is a guard oriented team that looks to be similar to the Brockport team of last year. Nobody in their starting lineup is taller then 6'3". They average 85 ppg, with  6'2" guard Lamonte Thomas scoring at a 30 ppg clip.
Ramapo starts 3 guys between 6'4"and 6'6" and 2 of them average around 12 points and 7 boards a game. Their go to guy is a 6 foot junior guard, Ahmad Hassan, who averages 18 ppg and is their main long distance threat. Another sharpshooter,Will Sanborn, comes off the bench and is shooting 40% from behind the arc. They have a fairly solid 9 man rotation and average 78 ppg as a team. They came up north over the Christmas break and played in a tournament at Union College. The host Dutchmen beat them the first day of the tournament 97-88, but the Union team at that time was a better team than their record would indicate. Union lost 2 top players right after that game against Ramapo and were never close to being the same team that beat the Roadrunners that day.
If you get by Gwynedd-Mercy, I think you'll be facing Ramapo in the second game. And if you make it to the Sweet 16, you'll have Randy-Mac or St. Mary's(Md) to look forward to. :o But lets take it 1 game at a time.

So good luck Bengals, Win a few for the YAC.

Sorry to see Lakers lose, will probably mean Rochester hosts the pod, and Lakers because of Central location could get sent to a really tough first round opponent like Middlebury or Ramapo.

Bear,
Rochester women are ranked #1 in the East. They closed out their season today with a win over Emory 81-72 to finish at 20-5. This year the women have priority for the first round of the playoffs so it's possible the Rochester men won't be hosting. Oswego still with a chance to host a pod.

Just noticed that the Rochester men got beat today by Emory 83-72. That won't help their hosting hopes either.

As I mentioned a couple of days ago, Rochester women were chosen to host a first round pod and Oswego Men did still have a chance to host a pod. I'm really happy for the Lakers and especially the Burridge family, who won't have to travel 300 miles to a game this weekend. 8-) I got my wish that the Lakers would get upset in the SUNYAC tournament so that we could get 2 teams in the dance. I'm sure Mr. and Mrs. Burridge weren't happy went they thought their chances of hosting went out the window when the Lakers lost to Brockport. They were probably cursing me. ??? But now with the NCAA giving the pod to Oswego, we both kind of got our wish. Notice I said kind of.  I really wanted the Cardinals to be that 2nd team and I'm sure the Burridge's would have liked a SUNYAC Champs banner hanging in Max Zeil Gym. On the positive side, though, the Lakers didn't get a bad draw. Possibilities to advance to the Sweet 16 are there. Probably would face Amherst if that happens. Go Lakers!!!

I, like many, were shocked at the distance for our first game. But we'll take it.

Bengals Congrats, this is a solid draw for you.  Assuming Cartwright is healthy, you can match up with any of these teams.

Same thing happened in 04 when Potsdam upset heavy favorite Brockport to win the SUNYAC, Bears got sent nearly 400 miles to Erie, then when they beat PS=Behrend they got sent another 150 miles to Wooster.  Regardless of what they say, some of these bracket decisions are cast well ahead of time.

Same advice as Brockport, Carr, Norm & Mitchell need to hit the boards hard limit opponents to one shot, and Cartwright & Jake need to put pressure on the ball and get out on the shooters.  Don't let any of these teams get you into a track meet, and run your half court sets to get great shots for Cartwright & Jake, let the others clean up the o boards.  If the threes start falling, twil be tough to guard your bigs..  Most of all, stop the ball on the break, and get your bigs in position to use their athleticism to intimidate the opposition.

Hope you get a nice run into the tournament... back to the days of Nate Gainey or Randy Smith, still the best player ever in the SUNYAC.

Thanks a bunch bear! "Nate Gainey". I'm impressed. He is 1 of the all time greats at Buff State and a local kid. He's now a Buffalo Policeman. You right on about what we need to do.

Cartwright had a bruised thigh. He looked good in practice today! Thanks. Hope to represent the YAC well! ;)

The final Player of the Week award for the week ending 2-27 again went to Justin Mitchell as he completed 14 days of outstanding play. Justin won the award last week as well and on Saturday was named the MVP of the SUNYAC  tournament. In addition to that the 6'4" sophomore was just named to the All Conference 2nd team.
Here's the write up for his latest Player of the Week award from the SUNYAC website:

MEN'S BASKETBALL – Buffalo State
Justin Mitchell (Buffalo, NY/Bishop-Timon), sophomore forward
Buffalo State sophomore forward Justin Mitchell (Buffalo, NY/Bishop-Timon) was named the SUNYAC Men's Basketball Championship Most Valuable Player after helping guide the Bengals to their 18th conference title on Saturday and first since 2003.  Mitchell started the tournament with 15 points and seven rebounds in the 75-56 win over Cortland. He scored 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting and grabbed eight boards in Friday's semifinal 87-79 win over Plattsburgh.  He also dished out four assists and recorded two blocks.  In the 67-50 championship win over Brockport, Mitchell posted his ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while also tallying one assist and three blocks. He averaged nearly a double-double for the tournament with 15.7 points and nine boards per game shooting 56.7 percent from the field.

When we spoke on the phone the other day I told you they could ship you up to 500 miles. Usually it's not quite that far and in the Bengal's case it wasn't "quite that far". ;D
I think of all the teams in the East region that are dancing, Buffalo State has the best draw, despite the fact that you're not hosting a pod. I may even have to draft Jake for my NCAA Fanyasy team.

Would suspect that Oswego would get a "pod" prior to Buff State. Only 4 losses all year by a total of 11 points.  We will know tomorrow.  I suspect that Skidmore will travel east to New England and possibly face an Amherst or the like.  Buff State may have a better time of it and go face a Penn St - Behrend but they better pray they do not get a Wooster match up.  That would be tough. ::)
Magic you must be rubbing off on me.  I was pretty accurate here except that Penn St Behrend travels to the Oswego pod!  Don't know too much about Wells but if Oswego plays well I think they come outof the first round pretty easily and I believe they are better the PS-B aslo.  Do not know a thing about Rhode Island.  Also think the Bengals who are playing hot have a chance to advance in the d3 dance if they keep their defensive stance and don't  prance! Sorry its pretty late and I'm a little "goofy"! :D

withage,
You were right on with the Skidmore-Amherst matchup. I still had Oswego hosting the pod a day ahead of you though. ;D I mentioned to BengalsRule on the phone a few days ago that I hope they don't send Buffalo State down to Wooster, so we were thinking alike there as well.

Tell this to your new old Coach Stockwell. He probably already knows this but here it is anyway.

Rhode Island is the toughest team in that pod. This is their 5th straight trip to the NCAA tournament. Last year they made it to the sweet 16 and took out basically the same Middlebury team that is currently #2 in the country. They finished last year with a 22-8 record. Entering last year's tournament they were 20-7. The beat Rutgers-Newark 72-60  in the 1st round and Middlebury 75-59 in the 2nd round. They then lost to Brandeis in the Sweet 16 by 11 points, 76-65, but it was a 1 point game with under 6 minutes to go.
This year's version of the Anchormen has 7 of their top 8 players back from last years Sweet 16 team. They are entering the tournament with an almost identical record as last year at 19-7 (they had a game against Amherst cancelled due to a snowstorm) and 3 of their 7 losses have come at the hands of teams that are in the NCAA tournament. They are my pick to win that pod, but of course I want the Lakers to prove me wrong. Oswego can play with this team but they will need to bring their A game. Early in the year Plattsburgh played a game against Western Connecticut State who was the co-champs of the LEC conference regular season with Rhode Island. Plattsburgh lost that game on a neutral court 86-80 but the Cardinals 2 best players shot terribly that day and between them went 0 for 8 from long distance. Western Connecticutt and Rhode Island split 2 games this season with each winning on the otherteam's home court. My point is that Plattsburgh could compete with these teams and probably win a home game if they played up to their capabilities, so the Lakers should be able to stay with Rhode Island, but they need a better effort than the one they had against Brockport last Friday. The Anchormen have 4 player that average double figures, with their playmaking guard 5'9" Antone Gray(12.8 ppg, 6 assists per game, 27 3's) and big guy 6'6" center Mike Akinrola (14.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg) leading the way. The other 3 starters are 6'4" forward Mason Choice(11.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg), 6'4" forward Darius Debnam (3.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and 6' guard Nick Manson (9.5 ppg 63 3's) who is their primary long range shooter. They have an 11 man rotation and 10 of those guys are getting double digit minutes. As a team they average 74 ppg and give up 64 ppg.

Enough about Rhode Island. First thing on the agenda is the Wells College Express from the NEAC conference and though they may come from one of the weakest conferences in the country according to Mr. Massey, let me just say this about that. SUNYIT 71  Plattsburgh State 65---Final score of last year's 1st round NCAA game hosted by Plattsburgh State. And if that's not enough, here's another more recent one. Oswego State 63, middle of the pack NEAC team, Cobleskill 62, from 3 weeks ago. These teams from the NEAC have nothing to lose. They will come into Max Zeil Gym, with no pressure on them and will try to knock your socks off. Wells has already played several teams from the "BIGGER and BETTER"  New York D3 conferences. They barely lost to Hamilton 63-60. That's a Hamilton team that beat St. Lawrence twice. The same St. Lawrence team that went into Laker Hall and beat Oswego 58-57. And they beat that Cobleskill team that gave Oswego fits, three times this year, by 15, by 12 and by 7. They also played Empire 8 champion Hartwick tough, losing at Hartwick 76-57 back on opening day of the season November 15th. They were within 2 points of Hartwick with less than 5 minutes to play in that game. And they also hung with another team that dealt the Lakers a loss. Oneonta State defeated Wells 75-65 back on January 2nd in a tournament in Virginia. Again they were witnin 5 points with less than 3 minutes to play. So I hope the Lakers approach this game with a sense of urgency and not with an attitude that these guys come from a low level D3 conference and we'll just be able to do what we want, when we want.

Wells has 4 guys averaging double figures and are led by their 2 big men 6'5" forward Terry Harrison and 6'8" forward Maybior Mayen who are both 1 rebound shy of averaging a double-double. Harrison is scoring 19.1 ppg and grabbing 9.5 rpg and also leads the team in steals with 61. Mayen has 15.5 ppg and 9.6 rpg and is the team leader in blocked shots with 75. The starting 5 is rounded out with 3 guards. 5' 10" Dave Foltz runs the offense averaging 11 ppg, 4 apg, 3.4 rpg and is 2nd on the team with 39 made 3 pointers. Benito Perez is a 6'1" guard averaging 10.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg and is the main sharpshooter from behind the arc with 55 3's. The fifth starter is 6'1" guard Terrence Wright who averages 4.4 ppg  They average 75 ppg and allow their opponents to score 71 ppg. They usually win the battle of the boards as well, 42-37 on average.

The Lakers should win this matchup, especially with the home crowd hopefully packing the place to celebrate Oswego's first ever NCAA bid, but they need to make a statement early and build a lead. Create a little breathing room. They can't let this game remain in the 1 or 2 possession range. It's a recipe for disaster that allows the upset to happen. Please Lakers, we can't lose to the NEAC for a second straight year.

With age...I may have to sneak this up on the BENGALS lockeroom wall tommorrow.

You are truly a poet...
And now we ALL know it!!!!

with age came?

Magic I can't wait until I get to 200 posts (which I learned from you tonight on another east board) so I can drown you in +karma!!  I will e-mail my new old Coach with the scouting report that is just plain fabulous!!!  I told him when I saw him up in Potsdam to keep you on speed dial!!  Let's face it who won the fantasy player championship!!! Magic with a "beat down"!!

Bengals- I'm a Buffalo guy so if you think they would like it - have at it!!  Played some rec ball with a "real stud" from Buff State in years past Josh Becker and still compete against Buff State Little College All American Charlie "the jazzman" M.  Don't want to use his last name because it might embarrass him!! ;D

Well fellas. It's game day. Went up tp ramapo aorund 11 a. m. to see what th gym looks lie. In 1 word Nice! resembles an Oneonta but every seat has armrests and back. Smaller but much newer ( 5 years old). NCAA logo on the court...NCAA logos on everything in the gym basically. You don't see anything else except Ramapo on the floor..and NCAA emblem.

Hope my BENGALS are ready. I FEEL that they are READY. Looked at the massey rating for Gwynedd Mercy's conference and they are ranked 43rd (SUNYAC 34th). No real  common opponents between CSAC and SUNYAC other than Oswego and Brockport both played Keystone ( in the Oswego Season opening tourney in Nov). Keystone, the 3rd ranked team in CSAC (split their season series with Gwynedd Mercy 1-1) beat Brockport by 6 and then the next night beat Oswego by 4. Keystone had a game in hand when they arrived at Oswego.

I predict a 78-71 victory for the BENGALS.  ;)

Oh BTW magicman...I gave Jake your message! :)

Thanks Champ,
I need Jake to at least get to the Sweet 16. 8-) If I can get 3 games from him I'll be happy. Also took Justin Mitchell for my wife's team, so I need him to perform like the Player of the Week that he's been. ;)

Gwynned-Mercy's mascot is a fictional creature, a Griffin. Show them that not only is their mascot fictional, the chance of beating the Bengals is a bigger fairy tale. ;D

Grab the lead tonight and never look back.  Go Bengals!!!!
