Buffalo State trailing St Mary's 40-32 at the half. Bengals were up 32-31 with 3 minutes to play in the period but they allowed the Seahawks to close the half on a 9-0 run. In those final 3 minutes, Buffalo State missed a 3 pointer, committed a foul, had a turnover, missed a jumper, committed another foul, had a 2nd turnover, a 3rd turnover, a 4th turnover, another foul, and a missed jumper at the buzzer. Just a terrible 3 minutes that may come back to haunt them. I hope not because they have shown that they can play with this team.

Bengals traded early baskets with the Seahawks but St Mary's then when on a 10-0 run to open up a 13-4 lead. Bengals called a time out to regroup and went on a 16-5 run of their own to regain the lead 20-18. Bengals went up 27-23 on a dunk by Justin Mitchell to gain their largest lead of the half and the teams traded baskets until it was 32-31, setting the stage for the last three minutes of the half.

Bengals big guy Glenroy Carr was limited to less than 3 minutes in the first half as he was hit with 2 fouls in the first 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

Glenroy started the 2nd half and picked up his 3rd foul 3 minutes and 23 seconds into the period.

Bengals once again found themselves trying to play catchup the entire 2nd half. After some early back and forth action to start the 2nd period the Bengals closed the gap to a single possession, 43-40 score, only 2:38 into the period. St. Mary's came right back to make it 45-40 and Buffalo State responded with a turnover and a missed 3, on their next 2 possessions. The Seahawks nail a 3 and get a layup on their 2 chances and just like that the lead is back up to 10. A Justin Mitchell jumper and 2 free throws by Glenroy Carr cut the lead to 6, but the Seahawks would follow with a 9-2 run and open up a 15 point lead, the game's largest, 61-46, with 12:19 left in the game. The Bengals refused to fold however and outscored the Seahawks 20-8 over the next 6 minutes to once again make it a single possession game at 69-66, forcing a St. Mary's timeout. Seahawks came out of the timeout and a Bengal foul sent Seahawks Alex Franz to the line where he made 1 of 2 to make it a 4 point advantage. Key possession for the Bengals and they failed to score, then gave up a 3 on the defensive end as the lead ballooned to 7 and that was as close as the Bengals could get. The Seahawks outscored Buffalo State 12-8 over the last 3:00 of the game as they hit 6 free throws in a row to close out the game.

Bengals got an outstanding game from Justin Mitchell who led everybody in scoring with 27 points and captured rebounding honors as well, with 7 boards at each end of the floor. His double-double of 14 rebounds and 27 points was one of the finest efforts of the NCAA Sectionals. His stat line was 11x19 from the field, 1x1 from behind the line and 4x5 from the stripe. He also had 4 blocks and 2 steals. Jake Simmons was also in double digits as he scored 17 points (7x16 fg's, 3x8 3's). Glenroy Carr was limited to only 15 minutes of playing time due to foul trouble, but the Bengals handled the boards ok with a 38 to 32 edge over the Seahawks. Buffalo State had more opportunities for rebounds though, as the Seahawks outshot them from the field, from 3 point land, and from the line. Buffalo State had 18 turnovers which played a large role in their 11 point loss.

Seahawks were led by Alex Franz with 17 points and 7 assists. Christian MacAuley added 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots.

St Mary's will now move on and face Middlebury, a 61-52 winner over Rochester, in the Great 8. This is the farthest the Seahawks have ever advanced in the NCAA tournament. It may also be the farthest Middlebury has ever advanced as well.

Thanks to the Bengals for extending the SUNYAC season as far as you did. The final record for the Bengals stands at 23-7. You didn't win tonight but it's not because you couldn't. A few lucky breaks and this game would have had a different outcome. I'm sure next year Buffalo State will be right back in the thick of things for the conference and regional rankings. A big thank you to  poster Bengalsrule as well. He was always willing to take care of his fellow posters, with travel, lodging and tickets in his neck of the woods. Plus K, again. ;)

PS: Jake Simmons scored 91 fantasy points for me in 3 games. One of the best 3 game averages in the league, 30 ppg. 8-)

Justin Mitchell scored almost as many as Jake as he had 86 for a 28 ppg average. 8-) Good job guys. Would have loved to have gotten a couple more games though. :(

On behalf of the Buff State BENGALS we all say "Thank you Magicman". You, the bear and with age have been true Yac supporters. Tough night last night but when the smoke settled and the players got home they all felt good about what they had accomplished.

My heart goes out to Glenroy, our only senior, who is graduating in May. Everyone else is returning.

The Mayor of Buffalo is going to have the team honored in city hall this Weds. Gonna sleep for the rest of the weekend then get back to normal Monday. 7 months until the boys head back to the gym...I can't wait!! ;)

Chad Burridge from Oswego State and Jake Simmons from Buffalo State were named to the D3Hoops All-East Region First Team. They were the only 2 players from the SUNYAC to gain All Region honors.

Coach of the Year went to Rochester's Luke Flockerzi, a deserving choice, but Coach Stockwell from Oswego or Coach Ansari from Buffalo State could just as easily have won that honor with the success their programs had this year.

David Golembiowski from SUNYIT was the Player of the Year. Golembiowski wraps up his career as one of the most prolific scorers and rebounders in the history of the East region. He finished with over 2100 points and almost 1000 rebounds.

Congratulations to all of these players and coaches for an outstanding year.

Congratulations to Bengals (team and rule) on their 23rd place finish in the D3 hoops top 25!! And of course I would also like to congratulate "my new old Coach" and the Oswego Lakers on being 32nd!!   Two young teams to be reckonned with next season!!   And lastly I would be remiss if I did not offer my congratulations to our own "beast from the east" Magicman for his strong silver place finish in the Fantasy League tournament over on the multi-regional topic board.  Only a tremendously strong showing by "hoops fan" in the semi's thwarted having our own "national champ"! Until next year - enjoy that "other division" for a the next week!! ;D
