Let's see what happens tonight. Season's record so far is 19-5 (76%).

New Paltz at Plattsburgh  6 PM

New early starting time for these single trip games. Trying to get the guys home around midnight to 1 AM instead of 3 in the morning. Plattsburgh women went to New Paltz instead of normal double header in the same location. Seems like a smart move. Same scheduling also applies to Cards travel partner Potsdam. Tonight's game is a must win for the young Cards to avoid falling to the bottom of the standings. New Paltz looking to get a leg up on an eventual home playoff game. Pointspread has the Cardinals favored by 3 and I feel that's a fair margin. Plattsburgh wins a tight one 76-73.

Oneonta at Potsdam 6 PM

Bears also need to turn things around after 2 double digit losses last weekend. Potsdam dug big holes by halftime and never mounted much of a comeback. Competition a little easier tonight but Bears have got to play better in all phases of the game. Red Dragons played Buffalo tough but struggled against Fredonia. Bears are home dogs as Oneonta is favored by 3.5. I'll take the Bears to spring a mild upset 67-65.

Fredonia at  Division I  Youngstown St  7:45 PM

No line on this game but if I was setting the odds I'd have Yougstown State favored by 23. I'm thinking they win each half by about 12 making it 82-58 Penguins.

Oswego  at Brockport   8 PM

The most anticipated contest of the evening as these 2 teams will duke it out all night long. Oswego is looking more and more like last years regular season champs after some early season adjustments. Oddsmakers have installed the Lakers as 5 point favorites. Brockport trying to make it 2 in row over Burridge and company. Golden Eagles not playing up to their potential and are coming off a 4th place finish in the Wendy's Classic.  Tough to open up conference play against one of the best teams in the state. I think the Lakers get some payback here. 72-68

Cortland at Geneseo  8 PM

Cortland comes into this contest tied with the 2 favorites for the early season lead. With Buffalo meeting Oswego on Saturday they can still be assured of at least 2nd place even if they lose to the Bengals on Friday night. Geneseo is coming off a 6th place finish in the Wendy's Classic last weekend and has struggled all year. Point spread has the Red Dragons favored by 9. Geneseo keeps it a little closer than that. 73-66. I did say little closer. ;D

Plattsburgh's Shavar Fields had himself quite a 1st half tonight against New Paltz. After 11 minutes had gone by in the game the Cardinals led the Hawks 22-19. Fields had 21 of those points as he hit his first 9 shots (1 three pointer) and his only 2 free throws. Teams traded baskets and the lead throughout the 1st 10 minutes of play. After New Paltz took a 17-15 lead Fields hit his 7th and 8th baskets, to give the Cards a 20-17 edge and the Hawks never got closer than 4 points after that. After 2 New Paltz free throws he hit his 9th bucket that ignited an 18-6 spurt  that gave th Cards a 38-25 advantage. Hawks Matt Devine closed the gap with 2 triples in the final 27 seconds of the period and New Paltz was only down 42-36 at the half. Fields finished the period with 23 points.
Hawks Harris Wichard scores the 1st basket of the 2nd half to narrow the deficit to 4 pts. Plattsburgh goes on a 13-2 run over the next 4 minutes to make it 55-40 and though the Hawks would fight back they could never get it closer than a 6 point deficit. Their last push came with 5:40 left to play and the score 68-61. Cards then put the game out of reach with a 16-4 burst to open up their biggest lead of the night 84-65.

Fields led the Cardinals with 27 pts (11x18 fg, 1x3 3's, 4x7 ft) and shared game high scoring honors with Devine. Josh Bruno was next with 16 pts (3x9 fg, 1x3 3's, 9x13 ft) and just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds. Anthony Baker had 11 pts (5x10 fg, 1x1 3's) 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. John Perez did manage a double-double with 10 points (4x13 fg, 2x3 ft) and 12 big boards, with 8 of them coming off the offensive glass. Cards shot 30x77 fg ( 39%), 5x13 3's (38.5%), and 21x32 ft (65.6 %). Plattsburgh dominated the glass 43-32 and only suffered 6 TO's to 15 for the Hawks.

New Paltz got 27 points from Matt Devine (8x15 fg, 4x7 3's, 7x8 ft) along with 7 rebounds. Sr. guard Harris Wichard added 20 pts (8x18 fg, 1x6 3's, 3x4 ft) and a team high 8 rebounds. Hawks shot 24x59 (40.7%) from the field, 7x24 3's (29.2%) and 17x21 ft (81%).

Cards improve to 3-4 overall (1-2 conf) and will host Geneseo on Friday and Brockport on Sat.

Hawks fall to 3-4 (1-2 conf) and will host Montclair St on Thursday evening and Oneonta on Sat at 4 PM.

Wow this predicting is tough. Went 2 of 4 although correctly predicted an Red Dragon-Bears Ot game  ;D (even though the results weren't right >:( . ) Gotta get to the Mirage Sportsbook in Vegas, before Friday, for Magicmans free tutorial on "how to pick the winners".

P.s. Hope Mrs. Magicman is feeling better! ;)

And tell the SID to correct that write up on the front page of the Buffalo State website. Jake didn't score 25 points against New Paltz, he only had 21. :o

You've got to quit drinking the orange kool-aid. ;D Or at least drink it through a straw instead of chugging it right down.  No way Norman Simmons makes first team YAC. May get 3rd team if he's lucky and Buffalo St. wins the YAC championship. Why? Because Simmons and Mitchell will be all conference  and possibly Nagaya as well. That only leaves 3rd team at best for Norman. Too many good teams and players this year for one team to hog all the glory. Norman's a solid player but he won't have the gaudy stats that a 1st teamer needs.

Getting ready to hit the sack after 1 more cup of "Orange-Aid". We will revisit the "Norm Simmons - All Yac" conversation around ... Jan 21st? By then you should need no more convincing! ;)

Expected Mr. Burridge to make a statement tonight. Didn't expect it to be 10 pages long. I mean c'mon, 40 points! 8-) Apparently an inside move for a bucket followed by a dunk in the first 45 seconds scared the beejesus out of Port's bigs because the play by play says Chad Burridge made layup or Chad Burridge made dunk so many times I lost count. (Actually 10) One time he must have moved so fast, Port and the stat guys didn't even see him score, so they just wrote down Chad Burridge and credited him with 2 more points. (14:02 of the first half). When he wasn't dunking or driving he'd just fire one up from beyond the arc, or get hacked and make the free throws. (8x10)

Brockport was never in this game, falling behind by double digits 6 minutes into the first half. They got it from a 16 pt deficit down to 7 a couple of times but a Laker push had them back up by 14 at the break. Second verse, same as the first, only worse. Laker lead fluctuated between 16 and 22 the entire 2nd period.
Burridge's 40 pts came on 15x26 fg, 2x3 3's 8x10 ft. Oh, did I mention the 16 rebounds of which 9 were on the offensive end. I guess a bunch of those 11 missed shots he had ended up back in his hands for putbacks, which might account for those 16 second chance points. Brockport's bench outscored Oswego's 23 to 6. Big deal.  Who needs a bench when you got a Burridge (38 minutes). Lest we forget, the Lakers are not a one man show. Hayden Ward scored 13 pts ( 5x14 fg, 2x6 3's, 1x2 ft) and had a double-double of his own as he grabbed 10 rebounds, 5 at each end. He also added 4 steals and 2 blocks in 34 minutes. Conor Monaghan played 38 minutes and scored 11 pts (4x9 fg, 2x4 3's, 1x4 ft) with 4 assists 2 steals and a block. Sean Michele played the entire game and added 6 pts, 6 assists and 3 rebounds.
Lakers shot  31x72 fg (43.1%),3's (30.8% and), 10x16 ft (62.5%). They out rebounded the Golden Eagles 45-39 and committed 10 turnovers to 16 for Port.
Oswego goes to 6-1 (3-0) heading into the big showdown with the Bengals on Saturday afternoon. First up are the Fredonia Blue Devils on Friday night at 8 PM.

Brockport's Jordan Major came off the bench tonight to lead the Eagles with 13 pts. (3x7 fg, 3x4 3's, 4x5 ft). Donnell Jackson has 11 pts (5x8 fg 1x2 ft) with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Derek Klein had 11 as well (4x7 fg, 3x5 ft) with 8 assists. Kyheem Green had 10 pts (5x9 fg) 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Eagles shot 25x63 fg (39.7%), 8x21 3's. (38.1%) and 7x9 ft (77.8%).
Brockport falls to a shocking 1-6 (0-1) and travels north to take on Potsdam on Friday at 8 PM and Plattsburgh on Saturday at 4 PM.

I take it you think Norman has big plans for us. ;D I'm more worried about the other Simmons.  And did you correct that write up yet? No. Look at the bottom of any of "thebears"  posts. His signature line---"Just the Facts, Ma'am, Just the Facts"

5 for 5 tonight although the Fredonia game was a gimme. Season record now stands at 24-5.(82.7 %) Good job with the OT prediction too bad you couldn't make it count.  ;D I had it as a 2 point game and it would have been except for a useless Oneonta foul at the buzzer. I think the Bengals might take it on the chin Saturday. Oswego wants what they feel you got lucky and grabbed last year. I see another statement game coming. Problem I have is this was one of the weeks that I make up the game schedule for the National Pick Em league and I try and put up a slate of fairly even contests. Oswego-Buff St was one of the 10 games I chose. When I posted the schedule I was fairly certain I was picking Buffalo St. But now I'm not so sure. 7 of 9 guys so far have picked the Bengals.

"Wego vs. The BUFFALO STATE BENGALS. Some facts for the naysayers who dont believe that my BELOVED BENGALS are for real.

Just the facts

1 - The BENGALS will wear Oswego out with their pressure/depth! The BENGALS first 5 opponents began to wilt in the 2nd half of each game which causes (a) turnovers (= points off of those turnovers), (b) cheap fouls (fouling out), (c) shots begin to fall short (ppg average goes down) and (d) they get short tempers (technicals)!

                                                                            Fact
'Wegos top 3 starters average 35 mins pre game (with P.G. Michele averaging over 37 mins per contest). There top 3 subs average less than 13 PPG. That is just what the Dr. ordered for the BENGALS Forty Mins of Hell  a.k.a. FMOH (copyright - Nolan Richardson U of Arkansas).

Previous BENGAL victims have seen the following happen when they don't have a quality bench to support their starting 5.

Exhibit A - New Paltz. Top 3 players (in terms of PPG and MPG) Matt Devine (a member of last weeks D3 HOOPS team of the week) 21.6 PPG/34 MinPG, Harris Wichard 20.1 PPG/35.9 MPG (This weeks member of the D3Hoops team of the week - not Jake Simmons ??? ) and Nick Taldi 13.9 PPG/33.6 MPG.
Versus the BENGALS FMOH Devine stat line included 5 fouls (1 tech) to go with his 15 pts (6 + under his average). Wichard and Taldi had  5 turnovers each which is more than double their season average (Taldi 2.4 and Wichard 2.5 turnovers per game).

POINTS off of Turnovers for the game.. B.S.C. 16 pts.. N.P.U. 8 pts.

BENGALS win by 6

Exhibit B - Houghton  Top 2 players. Chris Confair 20.1 PPG/34.4 MPG and Mike Munoz 16.6 PPG/30.1 MPG
Versus the BENGALS FMOH Stat line - Confair 4 fouls and Munoz 5 fouls  and 10 TURNOVERS (which is more nearly half of his total for the season-22).
POINTS off of Tunrnovers for the game.. B. S. C. 27 - H. C. 14

BENGALS win by 15

Exhibit C thru E

And it goes on and on....
BENGALS vs. Oneonta    Points Off Turnovers BSC 18 v. OSU 16
BENGALS win by 4

BENGALS Vs Pitt-Bradford Points Off Turnovers BSC 35 v. PB 6
BENGALS win by 44

BENGALS v. D'Youville   Points Off Turnovers BSC 49 v. DC 20
BENGALS win by 49

Tomorrow I'll discuss how Hamer, McLean and Majak will outscore/outrebound and outplay the entire Oswego bench by themselves
I promise to present...Just the facts! ;) (copyright to thebear - SUNY Potsdam)

Actually Magic, those FT's at :01 were far from meaningless.  Oneonta had every intention of putting the Bears on the line, but Potsdam ran a basketball version of the hook & lateral, and it took a while to grab someone.  Josh Lambert, not the best FT shooter, (6x17 entering the game) was clutch when his team needed him, and gave them the 4 pt margin, but Oneonta's Hail Mary at the end did hit the backboard.

I'm old enough to remember a certain Leroy Witherspoon hitting a 38 footer at the buzzer on the other team's home court to send a national championship game into OT, so any shot is theoretically possible.

Brockport scares me, they MUST be the best 1-6 team in the country.  They started with a quality non-conference slate, losing to 5-2 Montclair State, 4-2 Farmingdale State, 4-3 St. John Fisher, 6-0 Hobart (one point loss), 6-2 Rochester, and the aforementioned beating at the hands of Chad Burridige by 6-1 Oswego.

Geneseo also 1-6 gets their annual tour of the North Country as well.  Knights had to reload, with only 4 returnees from a mediocre 11-14 squad, but also has played a brutal opening schedule with their six losses to teams that are a combined 28-10.  Five of their losses are to Medaille (7-0), undefeated St. Joe's LI (5-0), national Power Rochester(6-2), Cortland (6-1), and perennial regional power St. John Fisher (4-3).

1-8 starts pretty much trash the season, and dissension sets in, so I would expect both of these clubs to be hungry & ready for Bear (& red birds too).  Will be interested in your picks on Friday.

Hope the Missus is on the mend.
