Only 2 teams in action tonight

Keuka at Buffalo St.   8 PM

Pretty much fodder for the Bengals in their opening game of the Coles Classic. Only question is will the Bengals break the century mark. The 1-6 Storm have given up 94 pts to Hilbert and 90 pts to Clarkson. Point spread has them favored by 26. Only way Buff St doesn't score a hundred is if the coach calls off the dogs. I think he will, because they'll have a tougher game on Sat. Bengals will almost certainly face Capital in the championship contest on Saturday afternoon at 4 PM. Capital takes on Morrisville in the first game tonight at 6 PM. Bengals romp in this one 95-67.

Cazenovia  at Oswego St.  8 PM

The Wildcats from Cazenovia shoudn't be much of an obstacle for Oswego as they enter tonight's contest with a 3-6 record. The oddsmakers have the Lakers listed as a 22 point favorite. The Wildcats 3 wins have come against 0-10 Baptist Bible, Davis College,(a school that plays jv teams, community colleges and small bible schools) and 0-7 SUNY-ESF a club team that plays anybody they can get a game with. Not what you would call signature wins. Notice I said shouldn't be much of an obstacle. This game may be this year's version of last year's Cobleskill game. Lakers should have won that game by 25+ but needed a last second basket by Burridge to avoid the upset of the year. Certainly hope his heroics aren't needed this year against the Wildcats, but this team did play 6-1 Hobart tough and only lost 82-76. They scored more points against the Statesmen than any team Hobart has played all year, including Rochester, Brockport, Nazareth, Fisher and Ithaca. They also hung with Wells only losing 77-71, and Wells took the Lakers to the limit before falling 58-55. Fresh off a big SUNYAC weekend, that saw the team capture sole possession of first place in the conference, a return to the Top 25 Poll, and a bunch of individual awards for their ace, this game has the word TRAP, written all over it. Having said that I'm picking the Lakers to win 85-60.

From what I saw of Caz in Hobart's OT win, the only way Caz stays with the Lakers is if Oswego forgets to guard the 3.  Caz has some decent shooters that can get hot.  But they don't play much defense and don't have a significant back to the basket player.  They may keep it close for a while, and who knows, maybe Caz shoots 80% from behind the line, but I think your margin is pretty acurate.

In that Clarkson Keuka game, Felix Llanos, Clarkson's talented shooting guard lit it up for 46.  I think he had 12 treys if I recall.  If Llanos can hit for 46, just think what Jake Simmons might be capable of.

Oswego should handle Caz pretty easily.  Besides Burridge & Ward (who may be just as good as Burridge) & Gilkes, who can post anyone up, they also have Andy Falvey coming off the bench, and Falvey is 6-8 230 , a highly regarded player in HS, who is stuck behind two of the region's best for playing time.

I think after their convincing win at Buff State, the Lakers know they control their own destiny, and will be focused from here on out.

According to Augie Fan's Strength of Schedule the pecking order in the 'yac to date is

131   Brockport State
140   Oneonta State
203   New Paltz State
231   Geneseo State
252   Plattsburgh State
273   Potsdam State
294   Cortland State
305   Oswego State
319   Fredonia State
336   Buffalo State

I know this will change with Holiday tournaments and the Like, but so far the Bengals are in the running for the weakest non-conference schedule.

"CHANGE"......Hopefully my BELOVED BENGALS are successful after their 2 dec tourneys which involve -This weekend -Capital (out of the OAC which includes #9 ranked Marietta and Baldwin Wallace , which recently beat Marietta) and the Catholic U tourney 12/31--1/1 in which the BENGALS open againest 9-1 Wesleyan ( out of the NESCAC which has 3 schools ranked in the D3Hoops top 7 - #1 Middlebury #6 Amherst, and #7 Williams). If successful againest Wesleyan then the championship should be BSC vs. 9-0 Catholic U.
Maybe we will see the team "currently" ranked 10th in S.O.S. climb to first in less than 3 weeks.
Who knows??? ???

P.s. Magicman... I agree with your predictions 100% ;)

Bear and Bengalsrule,

When I did my rankings I didn't base them on who's played who so far. I did it based on games played and games to be played. The pecking order of my list won't change. The Bengals and the Lakers will be at the bottom and the Cards will be at the top. I looked at everybody's complete non-conference schedule and made my decisions based on what I know, what I thought would happen in tournaments over the holidays, and games that will take place next semester. (e.g. Plattsburgh facing Middlebury, who will still be a Top 10 team even if they lose before the Plattsburgh contest in late Jan.) I didn't look at computer rankings since they're in a constant state of flux and can be misleading at certain points of the season.

Oswego State leads Cazenovia 34-30 at the half. Back and forth 1st period as the teams traded baskets for the initial 13 minutes of the game. There were 5 ties and 11 lead changes until Oswego, down 23-21, outscored the Storm 13-7 over the final 7 minutes of the half.

magicman

Buffalo State well on their way to the century mark as they lead Keuka 55-37 at the break. Coach Ansari started emptying the bench early as 14 players have already seen action and 10 guys have broken into the scoring column. Keuka Storm doesn't have enough rain to douse the fires of Forty Minutes of Hell,  as they have 14 turnovers in the 1st half. Bengals largest lead of the half was 23 points at 55-32. Only 2 players have double digit minutes in the 1st half.

magicman

Oswego asserting themselves and open up a 70-49 advantage over Cazenovia with 5 minutes to go.

Buffalo State closing in on the century mark which is a foregone conclusion as they lead Keuka 86-59 with 8:31 to go.

#24 Oswego State improves to 9-1 with a 2nd half surge that carries them over Cazenovia 83-55. Nearly everyone gets into the act as 10 players score and average double minutes. Hayden Ward with 16, Chad Burridge with 15, Sean Michele with 14 and Chris Gilkes with 12 to power the Lakers.

Lakers now off until their trip to Texas to take on DI Texas-Pan American on January 3rd.

#21 Buffalo State called off the dogs and still managed to break the century mark as they down Keuka 108-78. Bengals were led by Roderick Epps with 20 pts, Jake Simmons with 17, Maurice Miles with 15, and Nico McLean with 10. Bengals improve to 7-1 and will take on the Capital Crusaders tomorrow afternoon at 4 PM in the championship game of the Coles Classic. Capital defeated Morrisville State earlier today 77-70.

No great feat picking the winners of tonight's game. My dog could have done that. The only real challenge was trying to pick the score. I came a little closer with my Oswego guess as The Lakers only missed my posted total by 2 pts as I had them getting 85 when they only scored 83. I'm blaming that on Hayden Ward as he only went 8x10 from the line. ::) Sorry Hayden, but you were the only guy that missed 2 free throws. Most anybody else missed was 1. ;D Keuka almost got to the 60 I gave them but got stuck on 55 when they missed their last few shots and didn't score in the last 2:37 of the game. They opted not to foul and Oswego opted to run the shot clock. Pretty happy with my guess though.

Buffalo State subs had a field day against the Storm and the hundred point boundry was bound to be breached. I initially had the score at 106-71 but changed my mind thinking the regulars wouldn't play much because of the game tomorrow against expected foe Capital. I was right on both of those counts. Regulars didn't play a ton and they will face Capital. The bench players wanted to shine in the eye of the Storm. Bengals subs outscored Jake and the gang 66-42. My margin of victory was right there though as I had them winning by 28 and they won by 30.

Cortland 50, SUNIT 27  through a half .....RDragons' shooting eyes finally breaking out ......19x37fg ....10x20 3s led by J. Smith, J. Winter.  ......Corts without 6-9 Sternkopf ...

Games on tap for today:

SUNYIT at Cortland   2 PM

Red Dragons should be able to handle a Wildcats team that has struggled this year. Pointspread has Cortland favored by 15 and that may be too little. SUNYIT only 1-5, is giving up a lot of points and the teams they've lost to aren't as good as Cortland. Only bright spot for the Wildcats so far this year is a win against city rival Utica College. Think this one will be 92-60, Red Dragons.

Capital at Buffalo State  4 PM

This should be a better test for the Bengals than yesterday's romp in the park. Capital comes into this game with an overall 5-4 record and a 2-2 slate in the tough Ohio Athletic Conference. Their 2 wins have come against the bottom feeders in the conference while both losses have come against some upper division contenders.  Oddsmakers have favored Buffalo State by 9 points. I think that's where it should be. Bengals win this one 83-74.

Wow! I missed something. As I was typing and cyphering, jdex was posting a halftime score on the Cortland game that I didn't think started until 2 PM. Time for a new pair of glasses, I swore I saw 2 PM for the start time. Although my brain may have overridden my eyes since a 12 noon start is unusual for a YAC team.  At least the Red Dragons are winning handily.
