Plattsburgh 70 Oneonta 61

Teams came out of the break and traded baskets through the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half when the Cardinals, down 41-39, went on  an 11-0 run opened up a 50-41 lead with 13 minutes left. Red Dragons didn't fold however and chipped away until they caught Plattsburgh at 56 apiece with 4:00 to go. From that point it was all Plattsburgh as the Cardinals ended the game on a 14-5 burst to come away with the win. Ketema Brooks re-entered the game at that 4 minute mark and immediately hit a jumper, then made a layup off an Oneonta turnover and promptly stole the ball that led to 2 made free throws by Shavar Fields. After the Red Dragons missed a pair of foul shots, Fields hit a layup, was fouled on the play, and made that free throw. Oneonta turned it over again and John Perez grabbed a an offensive rebound for the putback and just like that it was 67-56 with only 49 seconds left.

Plattsburgh was led by Junghoon Roh who was the game's high scorer with 19 points (7x14 fg, 5x10 3's). it was a career night for Roh, scoring the most points he's ever had in a Cardinal uniform. Shavar Fields had 15 points (5x8 fg, 5x9 ft) and 8 rebounds. Freshman Shamoy McIntosh added 13 points (3x5 fg, 3x5 3's 4x5 ft) as all his shot were from beyond the arc. John Perez only scored 7 points tonight (3x7 fg, 0x1 3's, 1x1 ft) but was the game's  leading rebounder with 12 and led the Cards with 4 assists. Coach Curle emphasized all week that the Cards had to hit the boards better than they did over the holiday games. It must have sunk in as they out rebounded the Red Dragons 39-16 and that's the reason they won this game. They grabbed 4 offensive rebounds after the tie at 56 that resulted in 7 unanswered points.

Plattsburgh shot 25x49 (515) from the field, 9x20 3's (45%) and 11x17 (65%) from the line . They kept Oneonta in the game however with 21 turnovers while the Red Dragons had 13. Oneonta had a whopping 13 steals in the game.  Oneonta shot 22x48 fg(465), 8x18 3's (465) and 9x12 ft (75%).

Red Dragons were led by Dan Lee with 18 points (5x8 fg,3x4 3's, 5x5 ft). Nick Sarchioto had 12 points (5x7 fg, 2x4 ft), and Kevin Donahue added 11 (4x10 fg, 3x7 3's). Frankie Kelly had 9 points and 7 assists.

Plattsburgh improves to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference. They will return to action on Saturday when they host their travel partner, Potsdam State, at 4 PM.

Oneonta falls to 1-11 (0-5) and will travel to Cortland, then Oswego this weekend.

The kid from Potsdam is Zach Adams, is a two time first team All-State Class B player.  Comes highly recommended by Steve Kmack.  who sat next to Jerry for at least one national championship.  Is in the midst of a transition from playing HS 5 to college 3-4.

Alas the Bears are struggling at the point.  Gone are the days of Mike Deane, Ray Lipscomb, Eddie Jachim, Leroy Witherspoon, & Pony Bullock.  Wish the gym floor had enough DNA left so we could clone at least one of these guys.

As I said, how do you score 87 points and not score for 7 minutes!!!!????

Hawks got 90 out of Devine, Taldi, Wichard, down to nine players, not sure what happened there.

Don't know if this helps.... but when we played New Paltz on Dec 3rd., they only dressed 10!

bearnation

Potsdam New Paltz was 53 50 at the half unheard of which means Potsdam only scored 34 in the second.  If they made some lay ups during the dry spell they would have won or if they could have made a stop on a team that doesn't have a full roster.  Or didn't get two stupid T's.  Or played smart when they went up by 9 early in the second half.  Maybe with time the kid will be ready to play full time DIII basketball but he is not ready which just means either the coach doesn't have anyone for the minutes or he really likes the kid which will continue to lead us in the wrong direction.  Like you say Just the facts.  I'm aware that I will never see a DIII title I just want a competitive team that I can respect and say they hustled and it was a tough L  What I saw last night was a team with no direction, no leader. no defense and no point guard.  Maybe it was the long trip from Potsdam to New Paltz and back.  By the way I miss the women's game.

The SUNYAC basketball experiment splits one of the former weekend trips where both men and women travel together.  The men play at one site, the women at the other both in 6 PM starts.

We do this with Oneonta and New Paltz this year.  Not sure why they are doing it, when I looked at it, it meant more bus expense, more time away from class, more time on mountain roads on the bus in the winter.  Yes they do save a bit of meal money and a couple of overnights, but the big expense is the 2 extra bus trips.

Old Way - Men & Women travel together, 572 Miles, 12 bus hours. two overnights (Leave Thursday afternoon), one day away from classes (Friday).  Have Sunday to study & rest up.

New Way - Men & Women travel separately, total of 1852 bus miles, 36 bus hours, no overnight, 1.5 - 2 days away from classes (Depending on when you have to leave due to weather) + exhausted students Wednesday from 1-2 AM arrival on Tuesday night.

Thank you Pat for posting the 1982 game.  I am a Buffalo native and Bills fan, and eventually forgave Metzelaars over the years for picking on our little guys, clearly he never went pro in basketball, but has to rank as one of the great D-III athletes of all time.

I think you will find the 1981 game at Augustana more dramatic, when freshman Leroy Witherspoon hits a 38 footer at the buzzer to tie the game in regulation, then the Bears go on to defeat the homestanding Vikings in overtime.  Unfortuantely the MVP voting had already taken place.

I'll work on getting you a file of that tape, and of the 1986 championship game, when the Bears became the first undefeated D-III champion.

Alive and well ........just off the Carribean cruisin' trail .....

Cortland's 0-2 '12 start??? Shocking, we say, simply shocking!! Not necessarily the losses, but the means taken. No shows in first half on both occasions. Span was leery of such a thing after lengthy layoff, but for sure didn't anticipate starting anew after such a solid first semester. At home tonight vs. the other RDragons. Probably before another sparse gathering. Still have Oswego seeded above all others.

Bear, what's up with Pierce? From our reading we assume he's hurt, yes?

Four games in the YAC tonight all with 8 PM tip offs: Friday the 13th, who will be the unlucky ones?

New Paltz State at #22 Oswego State

Hawks fly into Laker Hall and look to take down the conference leading Lakers. New Paltz has put together a 3 game winning streak while Top 25 ranked Oswego is coming off their worse stretch in a year and a half with 2 straight losses. Loss to the D1 team was no surprise but getting upended by Medgar Evers the other night was. Chad Burridge, coming off two lackluster performances, (for him) needs to get back on track. Hayden Ward has put togther 5 solid games in a row but the Lakers need both these guys to be on their game tonight. Hawks can put points on the board in a hurry with Matt Devine, Harris Wichard and Nick Taldi chucking them up from all over the floor. Those three combined for 90 points against Potsdam on Monday evening, shooting a combined 31x46 fg's and 11x18 from downtown. Posted line has Oswego favored by 10 points. Lakers aren't Potsdam and Devine won't go off for 43 as he did against the Bears. I think Oswego gets back on track and wins this one 82-75.

Fredonia State and Geneseo State

On paper this looks like two teams heading in different directions. Fredonia, losers of 4 in a row and 5 of their last 6. Their only win was against cellar dwelling Oneonta. They just finished their toughest stretch of the season with losses to D-I Youngstown State and then lost to the top three teams in the YAC. They were in all three of those conference games however losing them by a combined total of 12 points. Geneseo won 2 games in a row last week, for the first time all season, with that 2nd win coming at the expense of Cortland. This game is a tough one to predict. Oddsmakers have the Blue Devils favored by 5 over the Blue Knights. Fredonia can't afford to fall any further behind in the conference standings. They played Buff State tough on Monday night. A repeat of that will have Geneseo feeling Blue. Devils over the Knights 70-66.

Oneonta State at Cortland State

One of these nights Oneonta is going to win a conference game. Just don't think it will be tonight. Too many times this year the O Red Dragons have been in tight games and then have a stretch where they can't put the ball in the hoop. Hartwick and Plattsburgh games quickly come to mind. The C Red Dragons just lost at home to Geneseo and the chances of that happening in back to back games are pretty slim. Posted pointspread favors Cortland by 10 over Oneonta. That seems to be a good number. Red Dragons take this one 70-62. I can't go wrong with that pick. ;)                     OK,OK, Cortland over Oneonta 70-62

#21 Buffalo State at Brockport State

Top 25 ranked Bengals looking to stay close to the Lakers. Brockport hoping to get back in the race. Injuries may play a part in this contest. Brockport's Kyheem Green (out for nearly a month) was back in action in their win over St Lawrence on January 3rd. He only played 19 minutes but had a team high 17 points (as did Donnell Jackson). Golden Eagles will hope to get more minutes from him tonight. It's also possible the Bengals may be missing a key performer in tonight's game. Bengals almost upset at home on Monday by Fredonia State. Oddsmakers have made Buffalo State an 8 point favorite but they don't know what I know. I'm afraid the Bengal's national ranking might take a beating tonight because I see Brockport pulling off the upset, 80-76.

I hope I'm wrong about this one as I want to see the YAC continue to be represented in the D3hoops poll. With Oswego losing on Monday I think they fall out of the Top 25. If Buffalo State loses tonight then the YAC will go from 2 ranked teams down to none.

Oswego leads New Paltz 43-26 at the half. Burridge is back to normal with 15 points to lead the way. Chris Gilkes with 9 and Hayden Ward with 7. Lakers grabbed an early 9-0 lead and Hawks never closer than 2 possessions. Up 22-18, Oswego goes on a 13-0 run to make it 35-18. Harris Wichard leads new Paltz with 9 points.
