Plattsburgh State 71 Potsdam State 54

Plattsburgh outlasted the Bears in a contest that was closer then the final score indicates. Plattsburgh with an early lead stretched it to double figures at 18-8 midway through the 1st half. Bears clawed back into it with a 16-5 run of their own to take a 24-23 lead with 2:54 remaining. Teams trade baskets until Cards end the half with a driving layup by Shavar Fields and a three pointer by Jordan Moody who was just inserted into the game to go into the break up 30-26. Bears opened the 2nd period with a 9-2 burst to regain a 35-32 advantage. Several ties and lead changes would follow until the Cardinals down 41-39 got a triple from Shamoy McIntosh and after a Potsdam turnover, McIntosh was fouled on another 3 point attempt. He swished all 3 free throws and the Cards had a 45-41 lead with 9:45 to play. It was a lead they never relinquished. Closest the Bears got after that was a two possession game. After the Bears closed to 49-45, McIntosh hit another 3 pointer an Josh Bruno followed with a pair of foul shots.  Bears went to the line and missed the front end of a 1&1 and Reggie Williams, on a nice feed from Mike Mitchell had a monster dunk to boost the lead back to double digits at 56-45 with 5 minutes to play. Bears score on their next possession to get it under 10 but a foul followed by a technical gave the Cards 4 free throws. Plattsburgh nearly blew the opportunity as they missed 3 of the 4 foul shots but McIntosh got a big tip in on the fourth attempt to make it a 59-47 lead. Three straight Potsdam possessions come up empty and the Cardinals scored each time to put the game out of reach.

Cards were led by freshman Mcintosh (3x5 fg, 2x3 3's, 8x11 ft) and sophomore John Perez (5x10 fg, 6x9 ft) who both scored 16 points. Reggie Williams had his best day in a Cardinal uniform with his first double double of 12 points (6x8 fg) and 11 rebounds both career highs. He also had 3 blocks, although I counted at least 5. Josh Bruno came off the bench with some instant offense and scored 11 points (3x9 fg, 1x5 3's, 4x6 ft). Ketema Brooks only scored 3 points on his 1x2 attempts but had 5 assists and 4 steals. Cards shot 23x52 fg (44.2%), 5x15 3's (33.3%) and 20x33 ft (60.6%). They won both the rebounding battle (38 to 33) and the turnover margin as well (14 for the Cards to 20 for the Bears).

Potsdam was led by former Plattsburgh area player Rob Duquette who was the game's high scorer with 23 points (10x17 fg, 0x2 3's, 3x6 ft) and 9 rebounds. No other Potsdam player was in double figures. Potsdam's leading scorer Curtis Pierce suffered an injury and had to leave the game with 9:33 left to play. He had scored 4 points with 8 rebounds and 3 assists up to that point. Tony Efese was the 2nd highest scorer for the Bears with 8 points. Bears shot 22x56 fg, (39.3%), 3x14 3's (21.4%) and 7x15 ft (46.7%).

Plattsburgh improves to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in SUNYAC play. This marked the first time the Cards have won back to back games all year. Coach Curle said going in, that this was a goal they had yet to accomplish and that they had to protect home court. Both of these were realized with the win today and Plattsburgh has moved from 5th place into a tie for 3rd with Buffalo State. The Cardinals will now enter a 5 game stretch that starts with 3 road contests against Fredonia, then nationally ranked Buffalo St (currently #21, but not for long), next weekend, and then a trip to the top ranked team in all of Division 3, #1 Middlebury Panthers on Jan. 24th. They then return to Memorial Hall to face off against #23 Oswego State (who will also probably drop out of the Top 25) and finish that stretch against 2nd place in the YAC, Cortland State. I'll be happy if they can go 2-3 in that stretch.

Potsdam falls to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference. They are now tied with Fredonia for the 8th and final playoff spot. They will face off against the Blue Devils next weekend right after they visit Buffalo State. That Fredonia game could be a big factor in determining who's in and who's out.

Oswego State 67 Oneonta State 55

This was no walk in the park for the Lakers as they had trouble putting Oneonta away. After getting out of the gate early with a 9-1 start the Red Dragons caught up and tied it at 11 with 13 minutes to play in the 1st half. An 11-2 run gave Oswego their first double digit lead but the Red Dragons cut it to 5 with 1:20 left in the period. The Lakers then scored on their final 2 possessions to go into the break up by 10 at 33-23. Oswego opened the 2nd period just as they did at the start of the game as 6 quick points gave them a 16 point bulge and it looked like the rout was on. After back and forth play, Oswego was still up by 15 at 46-31, with 10 minutes remaining. It was then that Oneonta gave the Lakers fans a scare as they scored 10 unanswered points to cut the lead to 5 at 46-41 with 6:30 to play. Oswgo regains the momentum however, and stretches the advantage to 56-44 and basically puts the game away. Lakers hit 8x10 from the line down the stretch and they bump the lead back up to 15, before an Oneonta 3 pointer at the buzzer cuts it to the 12 point final margin.

Lakers with balanced scoring as 5 players net double figures. Chad Burridge was the leader wirth 13 points followed by Chris Gilkes
with 12, Conor Monaghan with 12 (who came off the bench but played for 17 minutes tonight. Last night he only saw 3 minutes of PT), Sean Michele with 11 and Hayden Ward with 10. Ward was the leading rebounder with 11 and Burridge added 8. Lakers shot 21x49 fg, (42.9%), 10x21 3's (47.6%) and 15x18 ft (83.3%) They had 33 rebounds to 23 for Oneonta and both teams had 12 turnovers.

Oneonta was led by Nick Sarchioto with 16 points and Frankie Kelly with 11. Cameron Boyd added 8 points and 10 boards. Red Dragons shot 22x47 fg, (46.8%), 5x14 3's, (35.75) and 6x8 ft, (75%).

Oswego improves to 11-3 overall and 7-0 in the conference. They have opened up a one and a half game lead on Cortland but have a 2 game lead in the loss column. Hard to see them losing 3 conference games and it's looking more and more like the road to the SUNYAC crown will once again have to go through Max Zeil Gym at Laker Hall. The Lakers will be off until next Saturday when their closest pursuer, Cortland, comes to town. A win in that game will just about sew up home court for Burridge and company.

Oneonta is now 1-13 on the year and still winless in the YAC. They host Geneseo then Brockport next weekend.

After a long layoff the scooterman has returned to the board. Everything going well down here in Florida and I see my beloved Eagles are coming to life. Coach Dunne and the Eagles had difficult early schedule with alot of new faces on the squad. They seem to be putting all the pieces together and are ready to make their sprint to the YAC playoffs and be a true contender. I think they got all the "right stuff" and hopefully this past weekends triumphs will let them see the light. Good luck, Eagles and watch out SUNYAC!!!

#3673
Geneseo State 97  Buffalo State 86

It's not hard to imagine how important one player can be to a team and Buffalo State found that out this weekend. The loss of Justin Mitchell in the lineup resulted in a lost weekend for the Bengals. It's been over a year since Buff State lost 2 games in a row. When they looked at their schedule at the start of this semester, I don't think they anticipated losing back to back games to Brockport and Geneseo. Both teams had struggled early with bad losing streaks and had losing records. The Bengals were coming off 2 nice wins against Catholic and Wesleyan. They were slowly moving up in the rankings and the return matchup with Oswego, on the final weekend of the regular season, looked to be a battle for the top seed. This weekend changed all that. Unless Mitchell can get healthy in a hurry, the Bengals might not even host a first round matchup.

In the game yesterday afternoon the teams played on even terms through the first 7 minutes of play when Geneseo scored 7 unanswered points to grab a 26-18 lead. Bengals cut it to 4 but Geneseo scored 5 straight points to open up their biggest lead of the half at 34-25 with 4:44 to play. Bengals narrowed the lead, thanks to 6 late Geneseo turnovers and went into the break only down by 3 at 40-37. The second half was a replay of the first with the Bengals keeping it close but not quite able to gain the lead. The Blue Knights were leading 48-46 with 4:30 gone in the period when they used an 11-2 run to open up their largest lead of either half at 59-48. The Bengals cut into the lead but were still down by 8 with only 1:45 to play after Blue Knights Ryan Riefenhauser made a layup to make it 76-68. Again, just like in the first period, Geneseo fails to take care of the ball and 2 straight turnovers lead to 6 Bengal points. Bengal foul puts Geneseo on the line but Blue Knights miss them both and Nico McLean completes a 9-0 Bengal run with a 3 pointer to give Buffalo State their first lead since the beginning of the game. Geneseo regains the lead on 2 free throws by Marcus Hoy with 36 seconds left, but Bengals McLean is fouled with 5 ticks left. He makes the first to tie the game at 78 but misses the potential game winner and Geneseo's long attempt at the buzzer is no good and the teams go to overtime. Bengals open the OT with a layup by Hamer. Geneseo counters with 4 straight free throws by Gordon Lyon. Ryan Riefenhauser then hits a layup followed by 2 free throws by Bengals McLean to make it 84-82. Three straight Geneseo baskets make it 90-82 with 1:48 to go. Bengals have to foul and Geneseo aided by a technical hit 6 straight foul shots to put the game out of reach. Final score is 97-86.

Geneseo was led by Ryan Riefenhauser with 22 points (11x18 fg) and Connor Fedge with 21 (5x9 fg, 0x1 3's, 11x14 ft). Matt Curry had 19 points (8x10 fg, 3x4 3's), while Gordon Lyons came off the bench to add a double double of 17 points (2x7 fg, 13x17 ft) and 12 rebounds. Blue Knights shot 30x59 fg (50.8%), 4x8 3's (50%) and 33x41 ft (80.5%) Geneseo had 44 rebounds to 36 for the Bengals and 22 turnovers to 21 for Buff. St.

Bengals were led once again by Jake Simmons who led all scorers with 29 points (10x20 fg, 7x15 3's 2x2 ft). Anthony Hamer came off the bench to score 17 points (7x10 fg, 1x3 3's, 2x5 ft). Ahmed Nagaya had 16 points (7x11 fg, 2x3 ft) and 9 rebounds. Nico McLean scored 10 points (2x10 fg, 1x3 3's, 5x6 ft), had 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Bengals shot 32x75 fg (42.7%), 9x26 3's (34.6%) and 13x22 ft (59.1%). The big discrepancy of the game was the free throws where the Blue Knights had almost twice as many attempts and outscored the Bengals by 20 points at the line. That's not a stat that you'll see too often. It's tough to win if you get outscored by 10 points at the line, almost impossible if you give the other team a 20 point edge in that category.

Geneseo improves to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference and sole possession of 6th place. They host travel partner Brockport State on Tuesday at 8 PM.

Buffalo State falls to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the YAC and is tied with Plattsburgh for 3rd place. They will host the Cardinals next Saturday at 4 PM for possible sole possession of the third spot. But first they will take on the Potsdam Bears on Friday night at 8 PM.

"mama said there'd be days like this" THAT! :'(. 1 heck of an observation magicman. I've been told that 2 of local news stations/press  roasted the officials from the day before, who gave Fredonia a foul with (what 2 Geneseo supporters said was) 1 tenth of a second left on the clock. You know the rest. I've been following BENGAL basketball for at least 4 years and I've never seen such a discrpency in FTA. I actually made the trip down to Geneseo and this 1 was tough to watch!!

Having said all that the BENGALS still should have won....and we didn't >:(. No excuses..just lost !!

Well at least the Giants won!
