Am sure Magic's heart must have skipped a beat ....know mine did ..........as in Cortland 65, Plattsburgh 58, which says little about this one ....as in !!!!!!!!

Corts with 45-25 lead with 17:09 left .......Cards begin comeback at 16:34 paced by J. Moody and S. Fields ........on Fields hoop with 4:04 left ......IT'S 53-53 .......

RDragon J. White then appears after being missing in action a good deal of the weekend. He counters Field with a basket at 3:44, his eighth and ninth points. B. Manning finishes his 16 point game at 2:48 to hike lead to 57-53. White adds two points but K. Brooks gets them back for Cards .... and it's 59-55 at 1:39. Winters FTs at 1:23 get daylight and he finishes the job from the line. Both sides score at the horn. Winters 17 pts(9x10ft), Manning 16 pts., and J. Smith 10 pts. Actually, Magic, Manning sat out last season. For Pburgh in heartbreaking loss it was Fields and Moody with 15 pts apiece

You are right jdex, it wasn't Manning it was Jeremy Smith I was thinking of who went 7x9 from downtown last year against the Cards. Winter was 4x6 and Connelly was also 4x6. 15x22 from beyond the arc between them. This year was much better they were only 5x17. ;D Still enough for the win. :P

Who in hay is J.White. ???  Never mind as I check with livestats, I see you meant J. Winter. You must be having a Red Dragon flashback. ;D

Thanks Magic... I usually get to deliver the bad news at the table... as Bengals found out last year... me being the "rather rotund fellow" and all.  Easy to find I guess.  My best also to the Bear... spoke to your wife a little while ago at the Crane auditions and am glad you are on the mend!

I'll be sure and say hello when I visit Maxy Hall in 2 weeks. ;D

Cortland 65 Plattsburgh 58:

Had to many irons in the fire today and computer problems at home only compounded the issue. Never made it to the game until the 2nd half was underway. Knew from livestats that the Cardinals were taking it on the chin and were down by 14 at the break. Looks like the Cardinals came out of the gate in good shape and grabbed the early lead at 11-4, after 5 minutes of play. It would turn out to be their largest lead of the game. Unfortunately that advantage was short lived as the Red Dragons, fueled by John Connelly and Brian Manning went on a 16-3 run over the next 6+ minutes to go in front 20-14 with 8:42 left in the period. Still up 24-18, Cortland used a 7-0 spurt to make it a double digit edge at 31-18 and coasted into the break up 37-23 on a Jeremy Smith jumper at the buzzer.

I arrived at Memorial Hall with 18:18 left in the 2nd half only to find my Cards down by 21 at 44-23 as the Red Dragons opened the period with another 7 unanswered points. My entrance must have pumped up the Cardinals as they immediately went on a 10-2 run to cut it to 46-33 and get within shouting distance. After a Jesse Winter basket made it 48-33, the Cardinal's freshman guard, Jordan Moody, whose playing time has increased over the past 4 games, hit a jumper, and two 3 pointers, sandwiched around a Cortland bucket, to cut the lead to single digits for the first time since the 4:50 mark of the 1st period at 50-41. Shavar Fields followed with another bucket for the Cards, and Moody buried another triple to make it 50-46 with 7:19 left. Cortland's Smith made 2 free throws but Fields and Moody struck again with a layup and Moody's 4th three pointer of the period to cut it to a single point at 52-51 with 5:20 to go. jdex was right, my heart was a pumping. And after Corts Manning made 1 of 2 free throws, Fields was there again with a nice layup to tie the game at 53 with 4 minutes to play. Sadly that was the highlight of my afternoon, as Jesse Winter (a constant thorn in the Cardinals side for the past 2 years) made a beautiful drive to the basket and somehow avoided the Plattsburgh bigs to make an outstanding up and in layup. Plattsburgh comes down, misses a layup and Brian Manning (another thorn, as jdex mentioned earlier), with the shot clock winding down, throws up a wing and a prayer that banks in off the backboard to give the Red Dragons a 4 point edge with 2:48 left. Plattsburgh calls a time out and Manning comes to the Cortland bench with an awful big cheesy grin on his face. Cardinals are fouled after the break but missed both free throws (we suck at the line this year) and Winter comes down and scores again to make it a 6 point lead with 2 minutes to go. Card's Ketema Brooks makes a nice driving layup to cut it to 4 but Cards have to foul and Winter is the wrong man to put on the line. Cortland's final 6 points were all Winter free throws as he closes out the Cards in their comeback attempt. Heard after the game that the buzzer beater by Cortland to end the first half was a similar heave to Manning's desparate bank in. Tough loss for my Cards as their hopes of hosting a playoff game are slipping further and further away. With only 10 home games this year I was hoping for a chance at an 11th one.

On the bright side of things freshman Jordan Moody looks like a player. Hope he can continue to shine and get the minutes he looks to deserve. Tough choices for Coach Curle with so many young players that are looking to get PT. Keeping them all happy is a challenge. We need to go to the Grinnell system and bring them in a wave at a time. ;)  For the 2nd night in a row the Cards won the battle of the boards against an upper echelon team, with 31 boards to 21 for Cortland. Both teams took pretty good care of the ball with 12 turnovers for Plattsburgh and only 9 for the Corts. Plattsburgh had 7 steals and 3 blocks while Cortland had 4 steals and 2 blocks.
Cortland shot 20x44 from the field (45.4%), 5x17 from the arc (29.4%) and as usual an outstanding 20x23 from the line (87%).
Plattsburgh was 23x57 from the field (40.4%), 8x22 from downtown (36.4%) but only 4x9 from the line (44.4%) It marked the 2nd straight game Plattsburgh faced a huge discrepancy from the charity stripe. Over the weekend we had 15 total attempts while the visitors had 45. That's 3 times as many. No one can accuse Plattsburgh of getting any "Home Cooking". Pretty soon we'll be known as the Oakland Raiders of the SUNYAC.

Cortland, 9-3 in the SUNYAC 14-5 overall will now be off until next Saturday when they host Oswego State at 4:00 PM and hope to avenge their meltdown of last Saturday. The Red Dragons remain in 2nd place, a half game ahead of the Bengals in the standings.

Plattsburgh 4-7 in the conference, 6-12 overall will be at home Tuesday to take on the other Red Dragons. Cardinals find themselves in a 7th place tie with New Paltz after their current 5 game losing streak. Perhaps Oneonta may be just what the doctor ordered, as Buffalo State and Fredonia come into town next weekend and then the Cards end up with their final 4 games on the road. No one did them any favors when this year's schedule was made out. :P

Damn computers, can't live with them, can't live without them. Well on second thought, we did pretty good in the 50's and 60's without 'em. ;D

Brockport 71 Geneseo 67

Golden Eagles weren't about to let this one get away after last week's narrow defeat, but the Blue Knights didn't make easy for them. Port sprinted from the starting line and opened up a double digit 11-0 lead before Geneseo could get out of the blocks. Knights hung tough and came back with an 18-5 spurt to gain the lead for the 1st time with 7:55 to play in the half. Five lead changes would occur before the Eagles finally went ahead 26-24 on a 3 pointer by Lance Legister. They took a 33-29 edge into the locker room.
Up by 2 early in the 2nd the Eagles used an 8-3 run to gain a 45-38 lead. The Knights returned the favor and got 3 straight baskets ending with an and one to tie it at 45. Brockport maintained the lead but it was never more than 4 points until eventually the Blue Knights caught them once again at 60 apiece with 5:52 remaining. A three pointer by Derek Klein and a jumper by Stephen Sisson made it 65-60. Then after a basket by Geneseo's Connor Fedge, Port's Jordan Major hit another triple to make it 68-62, with 1:44 to go. After the teams exchanged free throws a Ryan Riefenhauser layup pulled the Knights to within 2 at 69-67 with 16 seconds left. Port's John Ivy was fouled and made the clinching free throws to ice it for the Eagles.

Brockport was led by Kyheem Green with 19 points, follow by Ivy with 14, Legister with 12 and Klein with 10.  Port got killed on the boards 35-23 but caused 20 Geneseo turnovers to only 12 for themselves. Eagles had 13 steals to 6 for Geneseo.
Brockport shot 23x49 from the field (46.9%), 7x20 3's (35%) and 18x23 ft (78.3%).

Geneseo also placed 4 players in double figs led by Gordon Lyons with 15 pts and 9 boards. Ryan Riefenhauser had a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Connor Fedge and Mike Hoy both had 11 points.
Geneseo shot 22x49 (49%) fg, 2x9 3's (22.2%), and 17x25 ft (68%).

Brockport improves to 5-5 in the YAC 7-12 overall. They are a half game behind Geneseo in fifth place and Tuesday night will travel to Oswego to take on the league leaders.

Geneseo drops to 6-5 in conference play and 8-10 overall. The Blue Knights have now dropped back to back contests for the first time since November 30th and have fallen 2 games off the pace in the battle for the 2nd spot. They are off until next Friday when they host New Paltz.

I went to the SUNYAC website around 8:30 PM and I got it.  I was looking for a link to Livestats for the Brockport game as the Port website didn't have one. Apparently they were too busy with hockey to have anyone doing livestats for the hoop game.I found a livestat link  on the SUNYAC website but when I brought it up it was stats for the Cortland-Brockport game from a while ago. So there was no way to get any info on the Port-Geneseo game as it was being played. About 20 minutes later I went to the YAC website again to bring up the composite schedule and when I tried to bring up the page I got the message you got about server error. It's still doing that as I just tried it again. The website comes up but the men's basketball link says server error. It does that for all the other teams as well. So it's not just you Champ, apparently the website needs some maintainence done to it. :P

Yes, that was our reference to computer woes late Saturday afternoon. Was operating off SUNYAC composite sked site, then went haywire at the time game's were counting down. Was able to bring up composite site later Saturday, but no scores yet listed from Saturday. Same today. Have seen service error notation there in the past

To "the bear"
I've made several references to my trip to Potsdam to see the Cards take on the Bears in a couple of weeks on Saturday Feb. 11th. I keep looking at a schedule that Coach Curle emailed to me before the season started and before D3hoops or the Plattsburgh State website had it posted. I printed up a copy and taped it to my office wall. Just discovered over the weekend, that both the upcoming game against Oneonta, and the game against Potsdam had the wrong dates. That schedule shows the Potsdam game being played on Sat. Feb 11th but it's actually Friday the 10th. That makes it more difficult for me but I'm still going to make the trip. Hope your knee is well on it's way to recovery by then. Your best man should be rolling into town this weekend to watch the alumni game. Wish they had scheduled it for the weekend of the Plattsburgh game, I'd have hung around on Saturday to see it. No Saturday game that weekend though so it had to be the weekend of the 3rd and 4th.

Need the Bears to do both themselves and my Cards a favor this weekend and take down those Blue Devils. I need Freds to experience the wonderful hospitality of the North Country and leave with 2 L's.

New Top 25 poll is out and the pleasant surprise is that Oswego State is back on board, checking in at #22. I just knew if I kept voting for them in the Posters' Poll those D3hoops voters would see the light and join my bandwagon. The Lakers saw their vote total rise from 40 to 89 as they climbed out of the Others Receiving Votes category. In doing so they outpointed 8 teams that were ranked ahead of them last week. There's not really a good reason to keep them out of the Top 25 with a D3 record of 15-2. That 3rd loss to Texas-Pan American, 59-54, could almost be considered a win in my book as they nearly beat that DI team on their home court and might have without some Texas Style home cooking.

Buffalo State also made a return to the polls as they received 2 points to get back into the ORV category. It's not much support but it's a start toward climbing back up the mountain. If they continue to win over the next 3 weeks, and there's no reason to think they can't put a winning streak together, now that they're healthy, they may get ranked once again before the end of the year. I can see their current streak of 3 in a row getting to 8, before they run into their roadblock on 2-17. That would put them at 20-4 (20-3 if you disregard the loss to DI University of Buffalo) and might be enough for the voters to give them a second chance.  Their record at the time that the voters  turn in their poll for week #11 would be 19-4 because the Fredonia game won't have taken place yet. Of course a loss to the Lakers on the 17th might drop them right back into the ORV category in week #12, if they should make the Poll in week #11.

Elsewhere in the East Region, NYU after a 1-1 week fell two spots to #19 with 146 points. They lost 46 points for the week and I'm surprised it wasn't more considering they lost to one of the lower tier teams in the UAA. They remain the highest ranked team in the East.

Hartwick made a reappearance in the ORV category as the Hawks picked up 19 points and check in at #34.

No other East team was mentioned in the poll.

with age came?

Glad to see the Lakers back in the top 25 and the Bengals appearing. Don't think any other YAC team has a chance to appear without a "deep run" say sweet sixteen which of course means a YAC tournament win.  Think Hobart might have appeared too if not for their trip up against RPI. Contemplating about who to go watch on the 10th -11th.  Will definitely let my "partners in hoops" know.

Being a Buffalo native, there are a lot of other places I'd rather be on the weekend before Valentine's Day than the Queen City of the Great Lakes.  Too much chance of a blizzard.
