Just back from the Plattsburgh-Oneonta game won by the Cardinals 67-64. Not a very pretty sight tonight in Memorial Hall. Cardinals had an early double digit lead at 21-11 with half the period gone by. Cardinals would extend that lead to 29-13 with 8:22 remaining. Up by a 33-19 score with 2:39 to play the Cardinals gave up 6 unanswered points as the Red Dragons Zach Mager hit a layup at the buzzer and the teams went into the break with a 33-25 Plattsburgh lead. Cards come out on fire and quickly outscore Oneonta by a 15-6 margin and go back on top by 17 points at 48-31 with slightly more than five minutes gone by in the period. Still up by 16 points with 13:11 to play the Red Dragons score 7 straight points to cut it to single digits at 51-42 at the 12 minute mark. The lead would fluctuate between 8 and 11 points until there was 4:30 left to play. Oneonta down 59-49 then outscored the Cardinals 11-5 to close to 64-60. A driving layup by the Cards John Perez made it a 6 point edge with 1:19 remaining. Red Dragons Ryan Clark gets an easy layup on their possession and after a Cardinal miss, Oneonta's Frankie Kelly is fouled and sinks them both to make it a 2 point game. After a Red Dragon timeout, Cards Ezra Hodgson is fouled and makes 1 of 2 with 8 seconds to play. Oneonta's Kelly comes down and misses a shot which they rebound and kick out to Kevin Donahue for a final attempt at the equalizer. The 3 point attempt comes up short and the Cards escape with the win.

Plattsburgh put on a pretty dismal display in this game every time they built a lead. They should have won this game by 25 points and to have to hang on at the end was embarassing. They were playing the final 7 or 8 minutes like they were the team behind instead of 10 points ahead. Playing not to lose instead of putting the Red Dragons away. You give a team like this a chance and it comes back to bite you in the behind. Brockport found that out 10 days ago against Oneonta.

Cardinals were led by John Perez and Shavar Fields who shared the game's scoring honors with 20 points each. Perez (8x11 fg, 0x1 3's, 4x9 ft) led the Cards in rebounds with 6 and Fields (6x9 fg, 1x1 3's, 7x9 ft) had 4. Shamoy McIntosh had 8 points, (3x5 fg, 2x3 3's), 4 rebounds and 3 steals in 14 minutes. Ketema Brooks had 6 assists, 4 rebounds, 3points and a steal. Cards shot 23x45 from the field (51.1%), 4x11 3's (36.4%) and 17x29 ft (58.6%). They were beat on the boards 34-27 and had 11 turnovers (seemed like more than that) to 9 for Oneonta.

Red Dragons were led by freshman point guard Frankie Kelly with 16 points (3x11 fg, 0x4 3's 10x10 ft). Kevin Donahue had 11 points (4x9 fg, 2x4 3's, 1x2 ft). Ryan Clark led the Red Dragons with 8 rebounds and scored 6 points. Oneonta shot 20x56 fg (35.7%)

It was a much needed win for the Cardinals tonight as they  halt a 5 game losing streak and stay tied with New Paltz for 7th place in the standings. Cards currently own the tiebreaker over the Hawks by virtue of thei earlier win back in December. Avisit to Hawk Center on Feb. 14th will probably determine that scenario. Up next for the Cards is Buffalo State as they roll into the Burgh this Friday night, followed by the Fredonia Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon. Plattsburgh improves to 7-12 overall and 5-7 in conference play.

Oneonta falls to 2-17 overall 1-11 in the YAC. They will travel to Brockport on Friday night looking to repeat their upset of the Eagles on Jan. 21st. Good luck with that.

Methinks that maybe you won't be picking Oneonta to win Friday ??? ::) ;)

Oswego 89 Brockport 75

Oswego grabbed the early lead at 6-0 and they were never headed. The Eagles closed to 8-7 but the Lakers quickly made it 13-7 and stayed ahead throughout much of the stanza by 4 to 8 points.  Up 24-19 with 6:10 left in the half the Lakers would outscore the Eagles 20-14 to go into the break with a 44-33 lead. Laker's Sean Michele opened the 2nd half with a 3 pointer to extend the lead to 14 but the Eagles scored 7 unanswered points to make it 47-40, two and a half minutes into the period. Led by Hayden Ward, the Lakers  came back and scored 11 straight points, capped by a Chad Burridge dunk, to open up an 18 point advantage at 58-40 with 14:14 remaining. It was a run that put the Eagles away as they never got it closer than 9 points the rest of the way. After building their biggest lead of the night to 19 points on a Ryan Sheridan 3 pointer with 11:46 to go the Lakers coasted to the finish line. Eagles with a late push cut it to 79-70 with 1:46 remaining but Oswego hit 10 of 12 from the line after that to salt it away.

Oswego was led by Hayden Ward, who was the game's high scorer with 24 points (8x16 fg, 1x3 3's, 7x10 ft) and he finished with a double double as he grabbed 12 rebounds as well. Sean Michele was next with 16 points (3x6 fg, 3x4 3's, 7x8 ft) and 6 assists. Conor Monaghan had 13 points (4x7 fg, 1x2 3's 4x4 ft), Chris Gilkes had 12 (5x9 fg, 0x2 3's, 2x2 ft) and Ryan Sheridan added 11 (3x5 fg, 2x4 3's, 3x4 ft) as the Lakers got balanced scoring from their top 6 players. Chad Burridge didn't get the 40 he had last game against the Eagles, as they must have worked hard to shut him down, but you pick your poison with this team and everyone else made the Eagles pay. Burridge only scored 7 points but did have 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Oswego shot 29x55 fg (52.7%), 7x16 3's (43.8%) and 24x32 ft (75%). They grabbed 34 rebounds to 32 for Port and only had 10 turnovers to 16 for the Eagles. They came away with 8 steals to 5 for Brockport, a statistic that usually favors the Eagles.

Brockport had 3 players in double figures led by Donnell Jackson with 19 points (9x12 fg, 1x3 ft). Gerald Williams had 16 points (3x9 fg, 1x4 3's, 9x10 ft) and Kyheem Green added 11 (5x9 fg, 1x1 ft). Green led the Eagles with 8 rebounds. Brockport shot 25x53 fg (47.2%), 4x9 3's (44.4%), and 21x27 ft (77.8%).

#22 Oswego ups their record to 16-3 overall (16-2 vs D3) and 12-0 in the SUNYAC. They travel to Cortland on Saturday to take on the 2nd place Red Dragons, knowing that even with a loss, they still walk out of Corey Gymnasium with the conference lead. Any window of opportunity that other SUNYAC hopefuls had of unseating the Lakers for the regular season crown is slowly slipping away as they march toward a possible sweep of their conference foes. With the other results in conference play tonight, the Lakers, Red Dragons of Cortland, and the Bengals, have all clinched conference playoff spots. Not that it was ever in doubt that these three teams would be there.

Brockport drops to 7-11 overall and 5-6 in the conference. They are tied for 5th place with Fredonia but hold the tiebreaker over the Blue Devils for the time being. They are both a game behind Geneseo for that all important 4th spot, and home court, for a 1st round playoff game. Brockport could improve their lot considerably this weekend as they host 2 of the lower teams in the standings. Last place Oneonta comes to town on Friday night and Port will look to put a monkey stomping on these Red Dragons as payback for the game that got away 10 days ago. New Paltz rolls into the Port on Saturday afternoon. If things go their way they could find themselves back into 4th place come Saturday night.

New Paltz 64 Potsdam 53

Bears and Hawks played a back and forth first half with the Hawks holding the early lead.  Potsdam finally caught them at the 15:00 mark on back to back buckets by Rob Duquette and Zach Adams to go in front 10-9. New Paltz went back up by 5 and the Bears responded with a mini run of their own to re-take the lead at 20-19 with 9:33 to play. The teams traded baskets until the Hawks, up by 1 hit the final 2 scores of the half and went into the break up by 5 at 36-31. The lead continued to remain between 5 to 7 points until New Paltz, ahead 45-39,  scored 8 straight points to boost the lead to 53-39 with just 6:44 left to play. The closest the Bears could get after that was 9 points. The lead grew to 15 before a couple of late Potsdam baskets cut it to 11.

New Paltz was led by Matt Devine with a game high 19 points (7x16 fg, 1x43's, 4x4 ft). Devine also captured rebounding honors with 11 boards.  Harris Wichard added 16 points (5x8 fg, 4x6 3's, 2x2 ft) and Alan Siergiej had 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 pts. New Paltz shot 22x46 (47.8%) from the field, 7x16 3's (43.8%) and 13x19 ft (68.4%).  The Hawks had 36 rebounds to 31 for the Bears, but committed 16 turnovers to 10 for Potsdam. Bears had 8 steals to 1 for New Paltz.

Potsdam was led in scoring by Tony Efese who came off the bench and tied for game honors with 19 (9x13 fg, 1x3 3's, 0x1 ft). He also added 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Curtis Pierce had 13 points (5x11vfg, 0x1 3's, 3x4 ft), 6 reboiunds and 3 steals. Bears big man Duquette was held to 2 points on 1x7 shooting. He did grab 6 rebounds but Potsdam needs more production than that from their inside game. Hard to believe that the guy I saw score 23 points and grab 9 rebounds against Plattsburgh 2 weeks ago could only manage 2 points against one of the worst defensive teams in the YAC. Potsdam shot 22x46 fg, (36.7%), only 1x11 3's (9.1%) and 8x12 ft (66.7%).

New Paltz upped their record to 8-10 overall and 5-7 in the conference. The Hawks hit the road for 2 games this weekend, first at Geneseo and then Brockport.

Potsdam's freefall continues as their losing streak has now reached double digits standing at 10 straight. Their overall record is now 4-15 and they drop to 2-10 in conference play. With Fredonia and Buffalo State coming to town this weekend there is the possibility for a win as they only lost to the Blue Devils 47-44 down there. I can pretty much guarantee they won't be getting a W against the Bengals.

with age came?

Hey Bear -Balmy Buffalo is now the Miami of the North - 57 degrees and sunny yesterday! At least on the guage in my truck!  Looks like the Lakers appear "unstoppable"?  I was impressed with Ward the first time I saw him as a freshman.  Just a beast.  He seems like he,s enjoying himself now.  I would assume from what I see that both he and Chad will be first team all league?  Thoughts?

SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week ending 1-28-12 was Cortland's Brian Manning. Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

The SUNYAC named Cortland junior guard Brian Manning Men's Basketball  Player of the Week after helping lead the Red Dragons to a trio of wins on the road last week.

Manning averaged 18 points per game as the Red Dragons moved into second place in the conference standings. He started the week with 10 points and six rebounds in a 73-66 win over Brockport on Tuesday. Friday night, Manning scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field (4-of-7 three-pointers) to account for nearly half of the Red Dragons' points in a 58-50 win at Potsdam. He followed that the next day with 16 points in a 65-58 victory at Plattsburgh. On the week he shot 54.3 percent from the field, 42% from the arc and 80% from the foul line.

Congrats to Cortlands Manning on Yac P.O. Week. I would have bet my Buffalo Bills t-shirt that Ahmed Nagaya would have won it >:( but I can see where Manning may have edged him out everso slighty! :)

Maybe that will make "The Prince" work harder this weekend, up north. ;)

Nice 1 Ethelred....NICE 1!!!! ;) I take it that you are NOT a diehard Bills fan. ( Every August, at the Mirage, I put $10.00 on the Bills and the Sabres, to win the Superbowl/Stanley Cup). 1 day I'm gonna get the last laugh!  ;D

Hey I grew up a Mets fan in the 60's.  I understand lost causes and the possibility of redemption.  Far more interesting, and rewarding, than expecting to win every year
