Brockport buries Potsdam 94-49 and now awaits the outcome of the Cortland game to see if they will host a playoff game.

The gym is on fire at Cortland as the Dragons lead 93-91 with 1 minute to go. Cortland misfires and Buffalo State comes down with a chance to tie or win. Bengal's Nico McLean hits a jumper to tie it up and Cortland has the ball with 7.6 seconds to go. Cort's Jeremy Smith misses a shot at the buzzer and we go to overtime.

Oswego finishes off Fredonia with a 75-44 thumping.

Buffalo State strikes first as Jake Simmons hits a jumper. Cortland's Jeremy Smith then turns the ball over but Bengals miss the shot, however they get the rebound and Cort's Kevin McMahon is called for his 5th foul. Bengal's Seth Runge hits 1 of 2 to make it a 3 point lead. Bengal's Nagaya commits a foul on the 2nd free throw and Cort's Garen Spendjian hits 1 of 2. Bengals misfire and Winter comes down and lays it in to tie the score. Bengal's Jake Simmons misses a 3 and Cortland's Brian Manning comes down and buries a 3 to make it 99-96 Cortland. Teams trade misses on three straight possessions (1 for Cortland, 2 for the Bengals) and Cortland has the ball after a time out. 2:40 to go. Manning with the shot clock winding down buries another three and Nico McLean goes to the other end and hits a jumper for the Bengals. Now 102-98 with a time out and 1:52 left to play. Cortland works the clock and Smith drives the lane and his shot is blocked. Cortland takes a timeout with 8 seconds on the shot clock. Dragons misfire out of the timeout and Bengals come down and Jake Simmons is fouled and goes to the line. He makes 1 of 2 and Cortland gets the rebound but turns the ball over with 58 seconds to go. Jake Simmons misses a 3 point attempt and Bengals foul Jesse Winter  with 39 seconds left. Winter makes 1 of 2 to make it a 2 possesion game at 103-99. Bengals hurry down and Nico McLean nails a jumper to cut it to 2 with 32 seconds left and call a TO. Cortland inbounds and Manning is fouled. He makes them both and the Bengals come down misss, rebound and Anthony Hamer makes a jumper to make it 105-103 with 17 seconds to play. Bengal TO.  Cortland inbounds to Winter who is fouled with 11 seconds left. He makes 1 of 2 giving the Bengals a chance to tie. Hamer drives downcourt and instead of a three pointer opts to lay it in for 2 with 5 seconds left. Not sure why they didn't try a three there. Cortland inbounds and Jesse Winter makes them both. Bengals McLean throws up a three pointer at the buzzer that is no good and Cortland comes away with the hard earned win. What a game. Bobby Comstock called it one of the best games he's ever seen.

Cortland's J Winter with 36 points on a day in which the junior scored his 1,000th career point. Was 11x18 from the field and 5x8 3s and as usual clutch at the stripe. J. Smith 26 points including 15 by halftime. B. Manning another leading role with 23 pts and 5x10 treys. Manning back to back threes provided six point lead with 2:10 to go in OT. Buffs never back down, N. McLean and J.Simmons superlative performances, especially Simmons in waning moments of regulation after Dragons mounted nine point lead with 5:03 to play. Simmons with 32 pts on 6x17 3s, McLean 26 pts, A. Nagaya 17 pts. Cortland 37x71fg, 16x35 3s, 17x28ft. BS 41x86fg, 7x29 3s, 18x27ft. Bengals threw plenty of size at CSt, which basically had five guards on the court thoughout OT.

Here's the quarterfinal matchups in the SUNYAC tournament: All games will start at 7:00 PM on Tuesday Feb. 21st, except the Fredonia-Geneseo game which will start at 8:00 PM.

#8 New Paltz State at #1 Oswego State
#7 Plattsburgh State at # 2 Cortland State
#6 Fredonia State at #3 Geneseo State
#5 Buffalo State at #4 Brockport State

Actually, the Geneseo game should start at 8 p.m., since the Geneseo women are also at home (as a #4 seed) and will host Cortland at 6 p.m. The other three men's games (at Oswego, Cortland and Brockport) are 7 p.m. starts since they are not part of doubleheaders.

"MAMA SAID THERE BE DAYS LIKE THIS".  >:(  Up by 10 at Oswego and then an OT loss at Cortland. Whew! :-[ Now it's 1 and done for the SUNYAC 8. Great time to be a YAC fan ( if I must say so myself).

I'm encouraged by the continued dominant play of Ahmed Nagaya and the career best performance by Seth Runge. It seems that everything is coming together at the right time for BSC!!  Losing Justin Mitchell has finally  set in on my beloved BENGALS and the realization that they CAN win without him was evident this weekend! Now we have to just go into Brockport and get it done!

Can't wait to see magicmans predictions for Tuesday!

Good luck to all!!! ;)

SUNYAC office with a tough choice this week for Player of the Week honors.

Hayden Ward who was the POTW last week has put up even better numbers for this week. Ward scored 56 points in 3 games (all wins) for an average of 18.6. Last week his ppg average was 16.5. He also had 2 double doubles this week and finished with 27 rebounds in the 3 games for an average of 9 per game (his average last week was 5.5) His stats would probably have been even better but he had limited minutes in 2 of the 3 games. He played 36 minutes against Geneseo, but only 23 minutes against Buff State and only 18 minutes against Fredonia as the Lakers had a huge lead early in the game.

Ward's deserved recognition of back to back POTW awards will probably be denied due to the exceptional week Cortland's Jesse Winter had. Winter helped lead the Red Dragons to 3 victories during the week as they wrapped up the 2nd seed with tough wins over Brockport, Fredonia and a classic overtime battle against Buffalo State.

Winter scored 67 points in those 3 games, which included a career high 36 points against the Bengals. He averaged 22.3 ppg and shot 51.4 % from the field (18x35). He made seven 3-pointers in 15 attempts (46.6%) and hit 24 of 29 free throws (82.7%). Winter also had a total of 12 rebounds and 15 assists in those 3 games.

He also reached the 1000 point milestone during his 36 point output against Buffalo State. Since the only Cortland player that has been accorded POTW honors this year is Brian Manning, and rarely does a player get back to back awards, (sorry Hayden) plus it was a milestone week for Jesse, I think it's safe to say Mr. Winter will be the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 19th. Congratulations in advance, Jesse. 8-)

Just kidding... Just kidding. I'm going out on a limb here and picking the Bengals because of the old "it's tough to beat a team 3 times in a season theory". But it won't be easy and it could be OT. Final score Buffalo State 83 Brockport 80

Might I also offer Jake Simmons to the list of possible POTW honors. He exceeded Winters 67 by 2 (69 in 3 games). 62 of his points came against Cortland and Oswego - the top 2 teams defensive teams in the Yac (#1 ranked defensive team - Cortland yields 61.4 and #2 Oswego yields 62.1). I doubt any Yac player has had 2 games like that against the TOP 2 defensive teams in our conference this season!

As far as your predictions there magicman....... ;)

I already knew what Jake's stats were for the week. He came in third on my list for the following reasons:

1. His game against Fredonia was below his normal level of play. In fact it was one of his worst statistical games of the year. :o

2. The Bengals were only 1-2 in their three games, :P while both Cortland and Oswego were 3-0.

3.  Jake has already won the POTW award twice this season. Quit trying to hog all the glory. ???

4. I don't drink the orange kool-aid like you do. ;D

Jake did have two outstanding games against the Lakers and Red Dragons, dropping 30 and 32 on consecutive nights. He had eleven 3 pointers over the weekend and now has 92 triples for the season. He continues to be near the top of the leaderboard in the NCAA's for total 3's made this year.
