Well I said the oddsmakers were way off with that 3.5 point spread. I thought it would be a win by at least 30 points. Geneseo's MOV was almost as much as D'Youville scored.

Fortunately for the Spartans they won't have to face any more teams from the SUNYAC. Fortunately for the SUNYAC we won't have our SOS lowered any furthur by scrimmaging this team.

Really wish the YAC schools would quit picking on the Spartans. There has to be better competition available than to consistantly year in and year out beat up on this team. Glad to see that Buffalo State wised up and left them off their schedule this year. Too bad Oswego picked them up. :o

Buffalo State reversing the way they usually play. Many times the Bengals turn a halftime deficit into a lead coming right out of the locker room. Tonight they went into the break up 49-42 over Nazareth. The Golden Flyers outscored the Bengals 20-10 over the first 5 minutes of the second period and went ahead of Buff State 62-59. They would increase that lead to 75-64 at the 12:15 mark behind the hot hand of Brad Ford. Bengals fighting back and have closed to 85-80 with 4:27 left in the game thanks to Rod Epps and Jake Simmons.

Buffalo State drops a 97-89 contest to Nazareth on the Bengals homecourt. Ouch!  I said it would be an 8 point game just needed to reverse my choice.

Bengals lost this game by not getting the job done on the defensive end of the floor. Plus they got killed on the boards. It didn't help that there were some crucial turnovers that took place in crunch time as well.

Brad Ford led Nazareth with 25 points. Five other players in double figures. Double Ouch!!

Bengals led by Roderick Epps with 33 points and Jake Simmons with 22. No other Bengal had double digits.

Final score not indicative of how close this game was with under 3 minutes to go. Down 87-80  the Bengals got a triple and a layup to cut the lead to 2 with 3:26 to play. Teams traded jump shots and with 2:25 to go Flyers Tyshun Stephens buries a 3 ball to make it a 5 pt lead at 92-87. Epps hits a jumper to make it 92-89, and after Naz misfired on their next possession, the Bengals did the same on a tying 3 point attempt with 1:29 left. Bengals get the rebound, however, but turn the ball over, their 3rd TO in the past several minutes and commit a foul on Stephens who makes them both to increase the lead to 5. Bengals then have their turn at the stripe but miss both attempts and that was pretty much the ballgame.  Naz hit 3 more free throws to stretch the 5 point lead to the final margin. Bengals were held scoreless in the final 2:02 of the game  where they missed four 3 pointers, 2 free throws committed 4 fouls and had a turnover. Certainly not the way the Bengals are used to finishing a game.

Big day today for the Plattsburgh State Cardinals as the #4 Middlebury Panthers come to town. Only game on the SUNYAC card today and it tips off in Memorial Hall at 4:00 PM. Women's game will tip off at 2:00 PM. Oddsmakers have made the Panthers an 11.5 point favorite which is probably about right. Both teams come into today's contest with unblemished records, 2-0 for the Cards and 3-0 for the Panthers. Last year the Panthers were ranked #1 when they defeated Plattsburgh 73-54 in Vermont but the game was closer than the final score indicated. Middlebury returns 4 starters off last year's team, but the 1 missing player is graduated All American 6'8" Ryan Sharry. Plattsburgh returns 4 of their starters also and 7 of the top 8 players who had the most minutes in last years contest. I think Plattsburgh will give the Panthers a good battle today and it wouldn't surprise me if the Cards pulled off the upset. Both teams have 4 players averaging in double figures. Plattsburgh will benefit from the return of last year's top rebounder and 2nd leading scorer John Perez. Perez missed the first two games the Cards played last weekend as he sat out with a pulled muscle. Middlebury is a big team with 3 solid guards that start along with a 6'6" and 6'8" pair of forwards. Subs for the forwards are also 6'6" and 6'8".

I think this game will be a closer margin than the 11.5 points but I still think the Cards are up against it. I would love to be wrong on this prediction but I think the Panthers will be the ones to walk out of Memorial Hall with the still perfect record. I see them taking this one 75-68.

There will be live stats and a live video broadcast of both the Men's and Women's games today. I watched live video of the men's soccer team's games this fall and the quality was quite good. hopefully the basketball telecast will be equally so.

Champ, watch the video and let me know will you?

"Momma said that there would be days like this" :-[. Tough game last night. Magic..you summed it up pretty well. Outrebounded 51-31 and poor defense when we needed it the most. Not the BENGAL way. Epps and Simmons with 55 and everyone else with 34. Not the BENGAL WAY. Less than 72 hrs before Medaille comes to town (actually before they travel less than 2 miles up rt. 198). Gotta get heads on straight. I think my BENGALS will respond!

Congrats to Nazareth. They are a gritty bunch. Don't know what happended to them vs U of Rochester, but the team I saw last night looks like a 3-1 (or better) team.To make the night worse, I figured I go watch my son Louis ( who videotaped the game) play in his rec league game at 10 pm, after some wings and pizza. They lost that 1 too >:(. Tough Saturday night all together. Hopefully my BILLS will beat INDY today.

Good luck vs Middlebury today magic! The 'Yac could use a boost.  :D 'Yac Non-conference record now stands at 12-10. A Bills and Cards win on Sunday!? Must admit...it has a nice ring to it!!

Note : Can anyone figure out why SUNYAC.com continues to list Geneseo with a 0-0 record instead fo 2-1?

I sent them an email wondering that exact same thing. Hopefully someone will make the corrections. I know the first 2 scores weren't reported to D3hoops for some time as well, but now see that the Geneseo page has all three of their games posted.

I think the Bengals starting 5, need more time to get to know each other and perhaps share the ball more. Hope Jake and Epps aren't trying to outdo each other at the expense of the other players. Roderick with 30 attempts. Other than Jake, the entire rest of the team only had 32 attempts. Epps with a decent overall fg percentage 15x30 but only  2x10 from downtown. He should be shooting in a bit closer and letting Jake take the long range shots. Not saying he shouldn't fire up an ocassional 3 pointer but be a bit more selective. It's nice to bury the three but Jake is a proven commodity, while Roderick has a couple of years left to get to that point. Your bigs needed more touches. They (Seth and Anyar) were 10x15 against Hobart. Only 10 combined attempts against Naz, making 4. Epps had almost a third of the teams fga's against Hobart, again only 1x5 from beyond the arc. That's 3x15 for the two games from long distance. Ten of those 15 attempts, at least, should be Jake's attempts. His percentages are much higher. Not being able to watch those 2 games it's hard for me to say, how or where those 3 point attempts came from, but I find it hard to believe they were coming off set plays to free up Roderick. More likely he was setting up himself and let it fly when he felt the urge. If they were coming off set plays then the wrong guy is being set up. Jake is a very respectable 8x20 from downtown, twice as good as Roderick. Loss of Norman Simmons already being felt in terms of ball distribution. Roderick is more of a scorer than Norman was and wouldn't want to take him out of that mindset, but maybe control it a little with better percentage shots. Just think that Jake should still be the first option from the perimeter.... A few observations from afar.

Methinks it could be the shift of SUNYAC operations from Fredonia to Cortland upon commissioner change. Believe the office usually assigns someone to handle standings and stats. And don't individual schools have to report scores and stats to said office? Last we looked an early Plattsburgh score was among the missing. Earlier we indicated Ithaca beat Potsdam 79-69. Listed that way on SUNYAC board then and still is. Magic noted the correction on these pages, 76-69. But as we said, could be an office in transition.

Im watching the Middlebury v Plattsburgh game via live video. Quality is great. Announcer sounds like... ( give me a min). Middlebury just went up by 1, 39-38, erasing a 9 point deficit! 13:07 left in the game!!

Bengalsrule

Fields and Manning keeping it close. Tied at 42!! Manning fouls...next foul puts Middlebury in the bonus! 11:12 left.

Bengalsrule

2 Free throws by Fields. Tied at 49. 8:19 left!!

Bengalsrule

Never knew that Tom Chapin ("Cats in the Cradle") was a Plattsburgh alumnus. Announcer just shared that "did you know" while Hobson hits a 3 and puts the Cards with in 2 - 64-62 . 3:44 left!

Bengalsrule

55 seconds left 5 pt Middlebury lead. Questionable call against Manning who knocks ball away from Middlebury but is called for the foul ???. 74-71 45.3 seconds left after a Cards steal! Cards won't quit! Waiting for the crowd to start a "Defense" chant! Manning turnover just about does the Cards in, Middlebury up by 5, 78-73, with 11 seconds left.

Looks like the #4 ranked Panthers will squeak 1 out as they get fouled with .5 seconds left! Brave effort by the Cards as they lose their first game of the season, 80-73! Great video!

Champ,
That's another close but no cigar!! ??? Tom Chapin is an alumnus of Plattsburgh State and he was a heck of a basketball player. If you're as old as I am you could have seen him play back in the mid 60's. I believe he graduated in 1966. That year in February I traveled from Potsdam over to Plattsburgh to watch the deciding game between the Bears and the Cardinals to see who would win the conference crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA's.(No YAC tournament back then) Plattsburgh was up by 8 points with 52 seconds left in the game, but the Bears came back and won it to clinch the bid. Chapin was the Cardinals star player and he was a senior that year. He DID NOT however pen and sing the song "Cats in the Cradle" . That would be his older brother Harry Chapin who left us entirely too soon as the result of a fatal auto accident/heart attack.(He suffered a heart attack but it was not known if it occured as a result of the accident or if it happened before the collision when he was rear ended by a tractor trailer). Harry was only 38 years old at the time of his death. Saw him in concert several times back in the 70's. Always put on a great show.

Tom Chapin was, for  5 or 6 years, the host of the Sunday morning TV program for children called Make a Wish. He is also a singer-songwriter and Grammy winner in his own right.

And that's Hodgson not Hobson. ;D
