Go Figure, Ithaca beat Potsdam, Clarkson beats Ithaca,Potsdam beats Ithaca....Clarkson

If this keeps up there will be a lot of 9-9 or 10-8 teams in the 'yac.

Go Bears!

Slight correction bear ;D

Oswego 80 Cobleskill 70

Looks like the Lakers played more like 2 years ago than last year as Cobleskill fought back from a 26-16 deficit with 7:41 left in the 1st half to outscore Oswego 21-8 and go into the break up 37-34. Would have liked to have heard Coach Leone's halftime speech.

11-7 start of the 2nd half finally gave the Lakers the lead at 45-44 after 3 minutes had gone by. Still a close game at 51-48 in favor of  Oswego with 13:50 left to play. The Lakers finally woke up and went on a 13-1 run to open up a 15 point 64-49 advantage with 10 minutes left. Cobleskill cut it to 9 twice in the last few minutes but could get no closer. Hayden Ward with 24, Chris Gilkes with 16 and Sean Michele with 15 led Oswego. Ward was the top rebounder in the game with 6.

SUNYAC's 7-0 record on Tuesday night gets us a little ink on D3hoops front page. Here's the quote from the write up:

"It was a good night to be a men's basketball team from the SUNYAC as all seven that played won. Cortland State beat archrival Ithaca 84-67 and Potsdam State beat North Country neighbor Clarkson 77-65. Buffalo State's dynamic duo led the Bengals past Medaille 98-84. Jake Simmons and Roderick Epps combined for 47 points two days after scoring 55 against Nazareth."

It lools like the Bengals have a new nickname for the Jake and Rod show. ;D

I hope Buffalo State's SID nominated Rod Epps for the D3hoops Team of the Week for his 2 games last week:

18 pts (8x20), 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, against Hobart on 11-20

33 pts (15x30), 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals,  against Nazareth on 11-24

Certainly merits consideration, but you have to be nominated, I believe, to be considered.

Pat Coleman

Buff State is one of the few SUNYAC schools that consistently nominates people. We had about 50 nominations for those five spots so there was a lot of competition. Good start to the Team of the Week this season.

You beat me to the SUNYAC quote  >:( . Good pub for the 'YAC!!!! ;)

4 -1 record vs. AMCC
4 -0 record vs Liberty League
4 -3 record vs Empire 8 (c'mon Oneonta...vs Hartwick tonite)
1 -1 record vs CUNY
0 -1 vs UAA (although U of Rochester could see Geneseo in the 2nd round of the Wendy's tourney)

Geneseo opens vs. Nazareth (E8) tonite..could meet Hobart (LL) in the 2nd rd. of WENDYS CLASSIC tourney.
Brockport opens vs. St John Fisher (E8) tonite...could meet U of Rochester (UAA) in 2nd rd. of the WENDYS CLASSIC tourney!!

Hopefully when at-large bids come around in Feb. the pollsters/voters won't forget what the 'Yac has done vs. non-conference foes in NYS/East! With 'Yac play in full effect this weekend we now begin to beat up on each other. :'( Thebear put it correctly when he said that there could be a lot of 9-9/10-8 teams in the conference this year! My hope is that a tough conference helps, not hurts, our post season chances when they look at the non-conference record!!! That's why the BIG EAST gets multiple bids to the dance. They beat up on each other but own most non-conference opponents.

magic...Our S.I.D. is pretty sharp! I gotta believe that he has nominated Rod for the D3 Hoops team of the week!! ;)

edited to add.....

See Pat Coleman's response!!!

No Rod Epps. Glad to know that we submitted his name though!! He faced pretty tough competition this week (see Pat Coleman's comment and numbers below)
Epps numbers averaged 25.5 points, 4.5 boards, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals in 2 games.
The 3 guards who made D3hoops team of the week!
DiBartolomeo - Averaged 17 points, 6 assists in 3 games.
Cherry - 24.3 points and over 40 mins per game in 3 games.
Watson - 28 pts in 2 games and helped upset #23 ranked Weslyan.

Long season. Something tells me that we'll see Jake and Rod on D3Hoops team of the week, before the season is over!! For that matter..the way Seth Runge and Ant Hamer are starting to play, I wouldn't be surprised if either 1 of them shows up on 1 soon !!  ;)

The YAC's winning streak comes to an end as Nazareth defeats Geneseo 70 to 64 in the first round of the Wendy's Classic tonight. The game was played at St. John Fisher, who is playing Brockport at the moment and leading the Golden Eagles 23-15 with 7:29 left in the first half.

Close game most of the way with numerous lead changes and ties with Naz leading 30-29 at the half. Geneseo came out of the break and retook the lead on 2 quick baskets 33-30. Naz went back in front at 39-38 and stretched it to 6 points at 51-45 with 12 minutes remaining. Blue Knights came back to tie the game at 51 and retook the lead at 57-56 with 8:15 to play. It was the last time they had the advantage. Nazareth went up by 7 at 67-60, but back to back baskets by the Knights Gordon Lyons, cut it to 3. After a Naz's Tyshun Stephens missed a jumper, the Knights had a chance to tie it with 1:16 to go. They missed a jumper, got the rebound, missed another jumper, got the rebound again and missed a layup now with only 19 seconds to go. Naz rebounded the third missed shot and Geneseo fouled sending Jack Giles to the line. He made the first, missed the second and the Knights took a timeout. They failed to get off a shot as they turned the ball over with 11 seconds left. They fouled again and Stephens made both shots to provide the final margin.

Gordon Lyons led Geneseo with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Connor Fedge had 13 points and Matt Curry also dropped in 13.

Nazareth was led by another big game from Brad Ford who had 24 pts and 14 rebounds. Steohens added 16 pts, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Dan Waldbillig finished with 13 pts and 7 boards. Nazareth with 2 nice wins now over what I think will be  upper division SUNYAC teams.

Brockport has come back to take the lead over Fisher 45-40 aided by a 4 point play by a Brockport player. Not sure how much time is left.

YAC taking it on the chin tonight as we go 0-3.

Oneonta gets blown out by Hartwick 70-39

Brockport falls to St John Fisher 85-72.

Golden Eagles get outscored 45-27 in the last 17 minutes or so of the game as they were up 45-40 at that time.  A 20-5 run by Fisher over the next 5 minutes gave them a 60-50 lead and the closest the Eagles got after that was 62-56. The Cardinals stretched the lead to as much as 16 on several ocassions before settling for the 13 point win.
Bobby Bell with 14, John Ivy with 13, Mat Lee with 11 and Jordan Major with 10 for Brockport.

Justin Plata with 23 was the game's high scorer. he added 5 boards 2 assists, 2 steal and 2 blocks. Jason Norsen with a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds. Adam Ambielli with 15, Thad Weir with 13, and Chaz Lott with 10 for the Cardinals.

Looks like the new Sunyac staff is gonna need a lot of guidance from magic an. Their stats system is goons need a lot of work. Last year individual stats ranked players who either played a min number of games and/or attempted a min number of shots..etc.etc.

A quick glance at this years Sunyac stats show that if you have played a min or more and done anything then you could ranked. 1 for 1 from the field this season after 3 games? You are ranked number in field goal percentage.

Gonna take some work. They have a big task in front of them since it looks like they are going with an entirely new system/format!!

Wow...no posts for 2 days!!!!!! Could it be that everyone is bracing for the first SUNYAC games of 2012-13??? For the first time this season all 10 'Yac yeams are playing on 2 consecutive nights. 8 against each other.

New Paltz @ Fredonia
Oneonta @ BUFFALO STATE
Plattsburgh @ Oswego (Game of the night!)
Potsdam @ Cortland
add
Brockport vs R.I.T. and
Geneseo vs. Roberts Wesleyan in the WENDY's Classic and you have a full slate!!!!!

I know that magicman will do his predictions. I patiently (sic?) await.
Also curious about Dcahill44 preditions. He's 2 for 2 on my beloved BENGALS. He correctly predicted a win over Medaille ;D and a loss to Nazareth >:( >:(

All 10 SUNYAC Teams in action tonight with the first conference games of the season on tap, plus 2 teams in the consolation round of the Wendy's Classic.

Brockport vs RIT @ Geneseo    6:00 PM   Wendy's Classic

Brockport 0-2 so far, have played well at times and let both games get away from them in the  2nd half. Dropped an 85-72 decision to St. John Fisher in the opening round Wednesday night.  RIT is 1-1 and coming off a tough loss to Rochester in the 1st round of the tournament. Massey doesn't show a line for this game but I think it's a toss-up. I'll go with the Golden Eagles since that's where my rooting interest lies. But it won't surprise me if RIT wins. Brockport by a 74-71 score.

Roberts Wesleyan @ Geneseo  8:00 PM  Wendy's Classic

Both teams dropped first round games in the tournament as Geneseo fell to Nazareth 70-64 and Roberts Wesleyan lost in double OT to Hobart 81-80. Don't know much about the Redhawks, but they do return a number of players from last year's squad. 3 players averaging double figures and a solid 8 man rotation. The fact that they hung with Hobart makes them a dangerous opponent for the Blue Knights. Again there is no posted line on this game by Massey but it figures to be a close one. I'll take Geneseo 69-65.

New Paltz at Fredonia 8: 00 PM

Hawks have won the last 4 games in this series and are off to a 2-2 start this season. Blue Devils also 2-2 on the year but lost more from last year's team than the Hawks did. Point spread has New Paltz favored by the slimmest of margins at a half point. I think Devine and Taylor will be too much for Fredonia and I see the Hawks winning this one 77-71.

Potsdam at Cortland  8:00 PM

The Bears are fresh off their first win of the year against crosstown rival Clarkson and have 4 players averaging double figures led by  senior transfer Mark Lake and senior standout Curtis Pierce. Cortland enters the game undefeated and would be in first place in the E8 conference, if they played in that league, as all three wins have been E8 opponents. Their most recent win was against rival Ithaca, in a game that the Red Dragons dominated from start to finish, winning 84-67. Cortland is favored by 13.5 points in this contest. Potsdam is a better team than last year's version but Cortland returned too much firepower to enable the Bears to turn the tables on a 5 game losing streak. I'm rooting for my Bears but think Cortland will prevail 84-73

Oneonta at Buffalo State  8:00 PM

Bengals have opened the season against 3 quality opponents going 2-1 in the process. Jake Simmons and Rod Epps have both been on fire. Bengals averaging nearly 90 ppg, led by their "dynamic duo". Epps with 24.7 ppg and Simmons with 20.7 ppg, have 46 3 pointers between them, in just 3 games. Oneonta is 1-2 but both losses have come against solid teams. Scranton, #12 in D3hoops Top 25, only beat the Red Dragons by 8 points, 63-55, and Oneonta had the halftime lead 32-28. That's the good. The bad is they were blown out by rival Hartwick the other night, 70-39. The point spread has the Bengals favored by 9.5 but I think the Bengals will win by a bigger margin. I see it as Buffalo State 87 Oneonta 69.

Plattsburgh State at Oswego State 8:00 PM

Oswego State is currently listed in the D3hoops Top 25 Others Receiving Votes category which has them tied for 40th place. The Lakers have opened up with 3 straight wins, but the quality of their competition has been on the lightweight side. Their most recent win, against Cobleskill, left a lot to be desired, as the 1-6 Fighting Tigers actually led the Lakers at the half 37-34. Oswego eventually won 70-60 but if they play that way tonight against my Cardinals they won't be walking out of Laker Hall with a W. Plattsburgh State is 3-1 entering the game as they got back on the winning track with a solid win over St. Lawrence on Tuesday night 84-68. Prior to that game the Cardinals gave #4 Middlebury all they could handle before falling 80-73. Cards played Oswego tough last year in Oswego and in Plattsburgh. I don't think this year's Laker team is as strong as last year's edition. It's pretty tough to replace a talent like All American Chad Burridge. The Cardinals on the other hand are a better team than last year's group. The question is, are they good enough to win this game? Plattsburgh has 11 players averaging double digit minutes and 7 guys averaging between 7 and 12 ppg. The point spread has the Lakers favored by 11.5 points but unless the Cardinals lay an egg here, I think that's too much. I'm think they are capable of pulling off the upset and ending their 4 game losing streak to Oswego. I'll put my heart on my sleeve and take Plattsburgh to come away with a close 76-73 victory

Brockport leading RIT at the half 35-30. Port's Jordan Major with 14 points to lead all scorers. Brendan Reinert leads RIT with 6. Port out to a quick 10-0 and 14-2 advantage before the Tigers find their stride. Cut lead to 5 on several ocassions and narrow it to 32-29 with 1:17 left before Major hits a 3 to make it 35-29. Tiger free throw to end the half.

magicman

Brockport 70-52 over RIT as the Golden Eagles outscore the Tigers 35-22 in the 2nd period. Up by a 39-36 score the Eagles got back to back 3's from Jordan Major and Derek Klein, followed by a jumper by John Ivy and 2 free throws by Mike Gallagher to stretch the lead to 13 at 49-36. The Tigers never got it back to single digits. The Eagles opened up their largest lead at 65-46 with 4 minutes left and coasted to the win. I had it much closer at 74-71 but the Tiger had way too many turnovers (22) to keep this one close.
Four Eagles in double figures led by Jordan Major with 17. Joe Lorenzo scored 11 on a perfect  night of shooting. (4x4 fg, 2x2 3's 1x1 ft). John Ivy and Mike Gallagher added 10 points each and Ivy was the game's leading rebounder with 8 as well as the game's assist leader with 6.

RIT failed to get anyone in double figures as Casey Bobelis had 9 and Nick Dobson added 8 points. Bob Schuster led the Tigers with 8 rebounds.

Brockport improves to 1-2 and will await the winner of the Geneseo-Roberts Wesleyan game for a chance to win the 5th place spot in the tournament.  RIT now 1-2 will face the loser of that game for the chance to finish in 7th. Both of those games will take place tomorrow at Roberts Wesleyan at 1:00 Pm (the 7th place game) and 3:00 PM (the 5th place game)
