Hawks down 74-72 and Shareef Taylor goes to the line for a 1&1 but misses the front end and the Warriors grab the rebound and call time out. Hawks foul on the inbound and East Conn makes them both and they call another time out. Hawks Matt Devine commits a turnover and fouls. Warriors miss the 1&1 and Hawks' Taylor makes a jumper. Hawks foul with 7 seconds left and Warriors Brian Salzillo makes them both to salt this one away at 78-74. Hawks call time out and Taylor throws up a 3 point attempt at the buzzer.

New Paltz went ahead 24-23 on a triple by Shareef Taylor with 6:09 to play in the 1st half. Hawks go cold and finish the half 1x6 from the field and 2x4 from the line with 4 turnovers. Warriors' Brian Salzillo then puts on a shooting clinic and scores 22 points in the final 8:17 of the period. He had 6 triples, a layup and a jumper. 16 of his points were the Warriors' final 16 points of the half and came in the last 4 minutes. (4 were 3 pointers.). The 19-4 run gave the Warriors a 42-28 haftime advantage.

The Hawks fought back from that deficit led by Taylor with 12 pts. and Shalik Jenkins with 8 points to close the gap to 56-54 with 10:53 to play. Three more times they got to within 2 and closed to a single point at 62-61 with 7:41 to go but couldn't get over the hump. Eastern opened the lead back to 8 at 71-63 and again New Paltz wouldn't go away. 4 times in the final 2:43 they got it down to 2 points but each time the Warriors had an answer.

New Paltz was led by Taylor who captured scoring honors with 27 points (10x16 fg, 5x9 3's, 2x4 ft) and 5 rebounds. Matt Devine had 18 points 4x6 fg, 1x1 3's, 9x10 ft)  and Jenkins had 15 (5x11 fg, 3x5 3's, 2x2 ft).

Eastern Connecticut was led by Salzillo with 26 points (9x17 fg, 6x12 3's, 2x2 ft). Chris Robitaille had 18 pts. (5x9 fg, 8x9 ft) and 8 rebounds. Mike Garrow had 17 pts.(5x11 fg, 2x3 3's, 5x7 ft)

New Paltz falls to 3-4 (1-1) and will host Brockport on Friday at 8:00 Pm, followed by Geneseo on Saturday at 4:00 Pm

Potsdam defeats St. Lawrence in overtime 68-66.

Bears Josh Lambert scores with 45 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 54. both teams miss on their final possessions. In overtime Potsdam scores first but SLU comes back with a basket and 2 free throws to take the lead. Potsdam's Curtis Pierce hits a jumper to tie it at 58 and the Saints come down and misfire, get the rebound, but turn it over. Bears Mark Lake is fouled and makes them both with 2:09 to go. SLU misses again, Lake is fouled again and he makes 2 more free throws. SLU's Al Jones hits a triple to cut it to 62-61 with 1:13 left. Lake comes down, lays one in, is fouled and makes the bonus, to extend it to a 4 point margin with 57 ticks left. Saints' Kyle Miller then buries a three to once again cut it to 1, and after a Potsdam turnover SLU's Janpeter Brase makes a layup to give the Saints the lead at 66-65 with 8 seconds left. Coach Dobbs calls a timeout for the Bears, sets up a play for who else but Curtis Pierce, and Potsdam's Mr. Everything scores a layup and is fouled with 2 seconds on the clock. He drops in the freebie and that's the final of 68-66. What a finish as the Bears claim North Country superiority (on the western front, that is) as they sweep their Liberty League neighbors and put an end to SLU's 4 game winning over them.

Mark Lake leads Potsdam with 19 points. Pierce has 12 points and 6 rebounds, while Rob Duquette has 10 points and 5 boards in only 15 minutes of court time. Colin Peterson led the Bears with 8 rebounds.

St. Lawrence got a double-double from Janpeter Brase with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Kyle Miller had 12 points and 6 rebounds, while Payton Stahler added 11 points.

Oswego's Hayden Ward with a basket and one with 8.7 seconds left to give Oswego an 81-80 lead. Oswego takes a time out after the made free throw. 18 lead changes in the game so far. One final play coming up. Brockport comes down and the Golden Eagle player dribbles to the left side of the court and falls down turning the ball over to the Lakers. Lakers have to inbound the ball with .7 seconds on the clock and they lob it down court where it is intercepted by Port's Bobby Bell who chucks one from three quarters of the court that gets off in time but isn't close. Oswego escapes with an 81-80 victory. Lakers had the lead at the break 44-38 after breaking free from a 38 all score with 2:16 left to hit the final 3 buckets of the period. That would equal the largest lead of the half.

Nothing but back and forth play the rest of the game with numerous ties and lead changes. Port was down 78-76 with 1:21 to play. Bobby Bell hit 2 free throws to tie it up and after Oswego missed a 3 point attempt, Jon Ivy came down and buried a jumper with 27 seconds to give the Eagles the 80-78 lead. That set the stage for Ward's heroics.

Hayden Ward continues where he left off this past weekend as he leads the Lakers with 27 points (11x16 fg, 0x2 3's, 5x6 ft) and 9 rebounds just missing another double-double. Chris Gilkes backs him up with 16 points (8x16 fg, 0x1 3's, 0x1 ft), 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Sean Michele adds 11 points (4x9 fg, 3x7 3's,), 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Justin Haight with 8 points (3x7 fg, 1x4 3's, 1x1 ft), 4 rebounds 2 steals and an assist in 17 minutes. Lakers 34x70 fg, 5x23 3's, and 8x12 ft. Oswego with a slight edge on the glass 34-32 and only 5 TO's to 12 for Port.

Golden Eagles were led by John Ivy with game scoring honors of 29 points (10x16 fg, 4x5 3's, 5x5ft) and 6 rebounds. Derek Klein (6 assists) and Bobby Bell with 12 points each. Jordan Major and Lance Legister (4 assists) with 9 points each. Matt Lee with 8 rebounds, 6 points and 5 assists. Brockport 25x53 fg, 14x28 3's, 16x18 ft.

Oswego improves to 5-1 (2-1 YAC) and will travel to take on Ithaca on Saturday 12-8 at 4:00 PM.

Brockport falls to 2-3 (0-1) and travels East to face New Paltz on Friday at 8:00 PM and then Oneonta on Saturday at 4:00 PM.

Geneseo, up by 13 with 3:35 left, holds off Cortland 70-66 ..........R. Rieferhaser two FTs at 0:06 clinches the verdict

Knights go on 12-0 run from 7:43 to 3:35 to grab 65-52 lead at home. T. Decker's three provided the Gens with their lead at 49-48 and RDragons chased from there. Riefenhauser scored his first points at 6:30 on FTs and added a bucket. C. Fedge nailed a triple and M. Curry a layup before another Riefenhauser point. This one appeared over .....but ..........CSt closed to 68-61 at 1:37 and J. Smith made a three at 1:18 to make it 68-64. L. Herron stole the inbounds pass and hit a layup and it was 68-66 at 1:15. Geneseo worked the clock, missed a shot and Cortland had the ball at 0:25. Appeared to pass up a couple of good inside shots before J. Smith missed a three bid at 0:06. Riefenhauser was fouled and sealed the issue to hand the Corts their first setback.

Geneseo showed poise and discipline to gain the victory ......and depth a major factor. Ten Knights saw considerable playing time and all contributed. Curry 17 pts(7x12fg, 3x5 3s); G. Lyons 10 pts(4x6fg); C. Fedge 9 pts(4x7fg); Riefenhauser 8 pts, 9 rebs, 4pf; J. McKenna 7 pts(3x5fg); M. Hoy 5 assts. Knights 25x54fg, 8x18 3s, 12x20ft.

Corts led by K. McMahon once more with 22 pts(9x12fg), 7 rebs. B. Manning 10 pts(4x8fg). Herron 8 pts, 6 assts. Smith and J. Winter a combined 5x19fg, 1x8 3s. Dragons 26x55fg, 4x12 3s, 10x10ft. Outboarded 34-29 but just eight Tvers. Gens just a dozen and do terrific job containing Cortland outside game -- evidenced by 3-point totals.

thebear

Magic, please note that Duquette had 10 in 15 Minutes, but foul trouble caused him to sit.  Zac Adams and Corey Ellis had great contributions off the bench, which has been lacking in these parts of late.

Knights win over Cortland sends 'yac into who beats who on a given night land...

Glad to see Pierce gets the winning hoop +1, great kid, quality human being.

What a night in the YAC.       Six great games tonight. I tried to watch them all.  Could only get 4 on a decent video feed. No video from New Paltz or Oneonta and the Potsdam video was very poor quality tonight. I'll list all the scores in one post:

Oswego 81  Brockport 80                                       I called this one 81-76 in favor of the Lakers. Can't get
                                                                            much closer.

Geneseo 70 Cortland 66                                        Had Cortland winning 77-71. Almost nailed Geneseo's
                                                                           score though.

Fredonia 61 Houghton 39                                    Had the winner. Not to close with my 71-66 score. Houghton worse than I figured

Potsdam 68 St.Lawrence 66 in OT                           I had Potsdam winning 73-70 I said it would be close.

Eastern Connecticut 78 New Paltz 74                      I had New Paltz 81-78  I got ECS right anyways.

Skidmore 66 Oneonta 63                                       I guess I can get closer as I almost nailed this one as I had Skidmore winning 66-61

Plattsburgh 70 Keene St. 64                                   I was half right I had Keene winning 75-70. Glad I lost this one. ;D Almost picked
my Cards but didn't want to jinx them

YAC goes 3-2 out of conference and 1-1 against 2 of the better teams in the LEC.

Buffalo State now in sole possession of first place in the YAC (for the time being. ;D)

Oooowwwweee. Busy night in the Yac. Great wins for Plattsburgh beating a little east team. I remember when Keene state knocked off then no. 1 ranked and undefeated Middlebury on Jan 31st.  Potsdam ending St. Lawrence's 4 game winning streak over them. And getting another win over the liberty league. That should definitely help with any post season decisions for at large bids in the east. Geneseo knocking Cortland from the ranks of the unbeaten. Looks like Brockport gave Oswego all that it could handle. Methinks that the regular season winner could have 2/3 losses when it's all said and done.

Results should definitely help our conference ranking!

Plattsburgh 70 Keene State 64

Cardinals opened the scoring with a 3 pointer by Ezra Hodgson 24 seconds after the tip and held a short lived lead. Owls went ahead 7-5 for their only lead of the half. Tied at 9 Cards "instant offense", Gary Tibbs, enters the game and scores 27 seconds later to give Plattsburgh a lead they wouldn't give back. Hodgson buried another 3 on the Cards next possession and after a Keene basket Tibbs made another short jumper. Keene then commited a turnover and Ed Correa hit his 1st triple 10 seconds after he entered the game to give Plattsburgh its largest lead of the night at 19-11. Still up 29-24 with 4:15 left  the Owls Ryan Martin would score Keene's final 6 points of the period as the Cards could only manage 2 free throws and the half ended with Plattsburgh up 31-30.

Keene scored the first 2 baskets of the 2nd half and that started a series of 6 lead changes and 5 ties before the Cards down 53-52 would take the lead for good on Ed Correa's 2nd 3 pointer of the night with 6:20 left to play. Another basket by Correa on Plattsburgh's next trip down the floor and 3 Cardinal free throws stretched the lead to 60-53 with 4:06 left.

Plattsburgh with some quick shot selections with under three minutes to go let Keene State right back in it. Score was now 62-60 in favor of the Cards with 1:45 to go. Time out called by Coach Curle. Jordan Moody scores for the Cards out of the time out. Keene St. turns it over and Moody is fouled. He makes 1 of 2 and stretches the lead to 5 with 1:13 left. Keene comes down and misses a 3 pointer and Cards come back with a 3 pointer by Moody for his 6th straight point to open up a 68-60 lead with 31 seconds left.
Keene goes coast to coast for a layup and fouls Chris Manning with 16 seconds to go. Manning misses the front end of a 1&1 and Keene rebounds and takes a time out. Moody fouls Owls Ryan Martin, who makes both free throws to make it 68-64. Keene fouls on the inbounds pass and Moody goes to the line and makes them both. Owls throw up a final three pointer that misses and it's all over 70-64 as the Cards come away with a big road win. Jordan Moody scores the last 8 Cardinal points.

Plattsburgh was led by Moody with 15 points (4x7 fg, 1x2 3's, 6x10 ft) with 8 coming in the last 1:35. Ezra Hodgson had 12 points(4x8 fg, 3x6 3's, 1x2 ft) and 4 rebounds. John Perez just missed a double-double as he had 9 points (2x6 fg, 5x6 ft) and led the Cards with 12 rebounds. He added 2 steals, 2 blocks and 1 giant leap for mankind as he outjumped Keene's 6'10' center on the opening tip. The 6'3" Perez held their big man to 5 points, nearly 10 below his season's average. Another solid game from Chris Manning with 8 points (3x5 fg, 2x3 ft), 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. The man knows how to fill up a stat sheet. Mike Mitchell, who started along side Manning for the 1st time this year, I believe, basically giving Plattsburgh 2 point guards on the court at the same time, also had a strong game. Mitchell had 5 points (2x6 fg, 1x4 3's) with 6 assists and 4 steals. His 3 pointer in the first half came as Keene was slicing an 8 point Plattsburgh lead down to 3 and helped the Cardinals maintain an advantage that they kept throughout the half. His bucket in the 2nd half came just as Keene had stretched their lead to the largest they would enjoy at 48-43 with 12 minutes left in the game. It ignited an 8-0 Plattsburgh burst that gave them a 51-48 edge. His last 2 assists came on Plattsburgh's final 2 baskets by Moody that widened their 62-60 lead to 68-60 and put the Owls away. Freshman Ed Correa only played 9 minutes but had 3 nice baskets for an 8 point (3x6 fg, 2x5 3's) outing.

Cards shot 23x61 from the field (37.7 %) and 7x22 from 3 point range (31.8%). They were 17x24 from the line (70.8%). They were outrebounded by the taller Owls 43-37 but won the turnover battle with 21 to the Owls' 27 as both teams were a little careless with the ball. 15 players saw action for the Cardinals tonight. Plattsburgh started their smallest lineup of the season. Their tallest players were 6'5" Hodgson and 6'3" Perez.

Keene only had 1 player in double figures but he put up a big number as Ryan Martin shot 75% from the field hitting 12 of 16 shots. He was 3x5 from long distance and hit 8x10 from the stripe for a game high total of 35 points. Keene's 5 bigs (7'0", 6'10", 6'8", 6'6" and 6'6') combined for a total of  11 points and 26 boards. Keene shot 22x55 (40.0%) from the field, 3x9 from the arc (33.3%) all from Martin and 17x25 from the line (68%).

Plattsburgh improves to 5-2 and will host Fredonia on Friday night at 8:00 PM.

Keene State falls to 3-3 and will host Mass-Boston on Saturday at 3:00 PM.

More ink on the front page for the YAC. They left out my Cards though. Here's the write up

"It was worth the wait for Geneseo State to start conference play. The Blue Knights opened their SUNYAC schedule by slaying the Red Dragons of Cortland State 70-66.  The game was Geneseo's first in conference but Cortland's third. Geneseo and Brockport State get a late start on conference play because they participate in the regional tournament currently called the Wendy's Classic. The Golden Eagles also opened SUNYAC play and lost a nailbiter to Oswego State, 81-80.

No. 14 Rhode Island College and WPI tuned up for their Thursday game with wins. The Anchormen defeated Salve Regina 66-42 and the Engineers took care of Salem State 75-71.

Curtis Pierce made a layup with two seconds left in overtime to lift Potsdam State over Saint Lawrence 68-66."

New poster on the 'YAC board - NP alum. Great to see all the commentary on the 'YAC boards - just thought you needed someone who isn't a Card or a Bengal posting on here.  :)

Just wanted to defend my Hawks who I think are underrated this season - yeah - they have some issues to work out - but Coach Rejniak has recruited a monster freshman class that just hasn't come into its own yet (see McCrae - moments of brilliance and then there was last night where he looked like a freshman). Rejniak had a team of 9 last year - after he lost a handful of players to disciplinary and academic issues. He's had some rebuilding to do - and he's getting the job done. Clearly the team has a lot of talent in Devine, Taylor and an underrated Jenkins - but they need to get better at playing as a unit on offense. Need to get the ball to Devine more often - the guy only had four shots last night in the 1st half. When these guys are on - they're great - they outscored Buff in the 2nd half last Saturday. They wouldn't quit last night. Just can't capitalize. Last year - those games are lost by 15+ even with Wichard.

Rejniak has scheduled a tough non-conference schedule - he's not padding his schedule - and it's the only way Hawks will improve to be able to compete with the big guys in the YAC.

Other key players to watch are freshman Roach and Pearlman who have been subbing at the #4 and #5 this year - two aggressive kids who will only improve. Junior Taylor Sowah and transfer Andrew Joseph show promise as well.

Hopefully they can put the pieces together for this weekend.

Hawkbill...let me be the first to welcome you to SUNYAC Boards. Good to have some Central NY flavor added. We already had  the North Country covered (Magicman and thebear), Syracuse area covered (JDEX and Dcahill) and Western NY covered ( :D ).

I witnessed the Hawks first hand Saturday and you are right on. McCrea has the potential to make All Sunyac if he plays like he did during his recent Western Ny trip (2 games total - 39 pts and 27 boards). Shereef Taylor looks better than he did 2 years ago when he made All Sunyac. He had a "come thru the middle tomahawk dunk in traffic" that people are still talking about today! And Matt Devine (3rd in Yac scoring and 7th in rebounding) is .....Matt Devine!! ('Nuff said ;) )

Tough loss last night to Eastern Conn (sweet 16 last I believe). We play them in Miami in December.
Keep posting. It's obvious you know your stuff.

Word of caution....Watch out for that "magic" guy from Plattsburgh! ;)

Glad to see someone from my alma mater post here.  Can't say I know much about the program, though I knew some of the women's players a few years ago.  Keep us posted.

Bengalsrule - thanks - looking forward to some healthy debate - and Buff was lights out in the first 5 minutes on Saturday - Rod Epps and Jake Simmons together are the real deal. (Video crashed after 1st half). Looking forward to the rematch in February!
