Plattsburgh 72 Fredonia 58

I had the 14 point margin of victory in this one as my score was 77-63.  Pretty sloppy game as the 2 teams combined for 51 turnovers(27 by Fredonia and 24 by Plattsburgh). Blue Devils opened the game with a backward dunk by Tyrone Clark 14 seconds after the tip (Clark would score 8 points in the game and 3 of his baskets were crowd pleasing dunks) and Amir Billups would bury a three on Fredonia's next possession to open up a 5-0 lead. That's the good. The bad? Blue Devils would go scoreless over the next eight + minutes and allow the Cardinals to go on a 23-0 run. Matt Deboy finally got a layup to fall at the 10:09 mark to make it 23-7. The game for all practical purposes was over at that point. Fredonia only got it to single digits on one occasion the rest of the night. Ed Correa followed Deboy's basket with a 3 pointer and the Cards enjoyed their largest lead of the period at 26-7. The Blue Devils mounted a comeback and outscored Plattsburgh 16-5 to pull within 8 points at 31-23 with 4 minutes left to play. Kalik Parker then hit back to back 3's and followed that with an old fashioned 3 point play to boost the lead back to 40-23 with 1:24 to go as the Cards cruised to a halftime advantage of 42-25. Fredonia never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way. Plattsburgh's largest lead of the night at 22 points, came with 10:51 left in the 2nd period, at 59-37. Lots of ill advised passes by both teams, as the Cards were trying to get too fancy and the Blue Devils were trying to play catch up. Cardinals with 11 players getting double digit minutes and 29 points off the bench. Fredonia had 10 players with double digit minutes and 15 bench points.

Plattsburgh placed 4 guys in double figures led by John Perez with 18 points (7x11 fg, 4x6 ft). Perez not only captured scoring honors but got the rebounding award as well as he completed his double-double with 13 boards, along with 3 blocked shots in 31'. Kalik Parker had 12 points (4X8 fg, 3X7 3's 1X1 ft) in 17' off the bench. Shamoy McIntosh, who opened the Cards scoring with a 3 pointer, hit his first 3 attempts from long distance leading Plattsburgh to a 14-5 early edge. He finished with 11 points (4x8 fg, 3x5 3's) in 16'. Shavar Fields also came off the bench and added 10 points (3x4 fg, 4x6 ft) in 14'. Point guard Chris Manning once again filled up the stat sheet as he scored 4 points (0x3 fg, 0x1 3's, 4x7 ft), had 8 assists, grabbed 6 rebounds and 6 steals in 23 minutes. Cards had 10 players hit the scoring column. Plattsburgh shot 23x53 fg (43.4%), 9x23 3's (39.1%) and 17x24 ft (70.8%). They enjoyed a big edge off the glass 43-28.

Fredonia placed 2 players in double figures with Joe Monahan leading the way with 16 pts (5x15 fg, 3x6 3's, 3x3 ft) and 6 rebounds. Dalton Kashmer added 11 points (4x6 fg, 2x3 3's, 1x2 ft). Blue Devils shot 21x53 fg (39.6%), 8x20 3's (40%) and 8x15 ft (53.3%).

Plattsburgh improves to 6-2 (2-1) and will face off against Buffalo State tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 PM.

Fredonia falls to 4-4 (1-2) and makes the short hop to Potsdam to face the Bears at 4:00 PM as well.

Heck of a win for the Hawks tonight - I was really hoping they'd do it - and do it they did. Devine had 27pts., Taylor - 20 and Joseph logged his first double-double of the season with 12 and 10. Brockport was tough the whole way - very physical and athletic. Usually a team that can shoot the 3 - but tonight - we were able to hold them to 25% - and going into tonight's game - they were at the top.

Big win for the program - but can't celebrate too much - facing a tough Geneseo team tomorrow - but like the matchups. Now you know how we feel in NP Bengalsrule - all these close games are too stressful!

Nine teams in 5 games today all starting at 4:00 PM  Only Cortland is idle.

Not much time here as the Buffalo State Coaches have been running me ragged all day. So I'll have to do some quick picks withou the ususal commentary.

Oswego State at Ithaca

Lakers had a tough time last year in Oswego aagainst the Bombers where they won 74-71. Another tight one today. Ithaca favored by 2 but I'm going with Oswego 72-67.

Geneseo at New Paltz

Blue Knights won both meetings last year. They got everybody back. I think they win this one despite the Hawks listed as a 1 point favorite. Geneseo 80 New Paltz 76.

Brockport at Oneonta

Golden Eagles smarting from their loss yesterday will not go home 0-2 for the trip. Oneonta stuck on 63 points Odds favor Brockport by 13. I think they win it 71-65.

Fredonia at Potsdam

Bears need to forget about tough loss to Buff State and get the win here. Blue Devils trying to salvage the weekend as well. Point spread favors the Bears by 4. I'll go along with that. Bears wins 72-68.

Buffalo State at Plattsburgh

Bengals beat the Cardinals by double digits twice last year so the Cards are looking for a little payback. Line has the Bengals favored by 1 point. I'm hoping the Bears tired out the boys from Buffalo last night and I know the Bengals are short a starter today since I just brought him back from the emergency room. (Fractured foot) They still have their "dynamic duo" though and if we can stop their guards we're in trouble. We won't stop them, but I think we can slow them down a bit. Plattsburgh wins this one 84-81.
