Gonna predict Cortland wins .........something like 85-53 ........... J. Winter 28 pts in 25 minutes. Scores 10 of the RDragons' initial 18.  Ursinus goes scoreless over the first 4:37. Winter 10x14fg, 6x9 3s, 4 assts. H. Hefele 15 pts(6x11fg) in 26' with 8 rebs. K. McMahon 10 pts(4x4fg), 5 rebs. Largest bulge at 78-42 on L. Herron triple with 7:48 left. CSt  to 8-1 and faces Emby-Riddle ....11-1 though against lesser foes .....in Sunday 6 pm tip. Ursinus' J. Kresna 14 pts. Bears 5-6 but like Magic said, some pretty fair foes. Narrow falls to respected Middlebury, F&M and Moravian ........

Nice win for Cortland. What a difference a year makes. Last year after the holiday break they lose by 31 points, 87-56. This year after the holiday break they win by 32 points, 85 -53. Coach Spanbauer must have given them plenty of reminders this past week. ;D

I'm surprised they handled Ursinus so easily. No one had beaten the Bears by more than 5 points all year. And that includes some heavyweights. Making 14 three pointers certainly helped. Bears 2 big men scored a total of 11 points and their 4 double digit scorers had 5,6,8, and 14. Good thing they went to the line 19 times (they were 13x19 ft) or this could have been an even worse beatdown. Cortland was perfect from the line, but didn't get there very much, going 7x7. Of course when 37 of your 66 shots are from downtown, you're probably not going to get many fouls called on the other team.

Brockport trailing Pitt-Bradford at the half 38-37. Hope Coach Dunne lit into his players at halftime because that is a terrible first half of basketball. The Eagles should be burying this team. The whole purpose of Pitt-Bradford playing in the tournament was to be fodder for the home team.

I finally got live stats to load the Brockport game and discovered that there was just a couple of minutes left in the game. The game has now gone final and Brockport manages to win 78-70 over Pitt-Bradford.

Cortland-Embry Riddle game Sunday at 6 p.m. Host E-R now 12-1 after defeating 6-4 Merchant Marine 81-65 on heels of Corts roughing up Ursinus. Union currently with 33-28 early second half lead on Elmira. Hamilton on Friday stopped Wartburg 55-45. Eight team slate was predetermined.

Sunday also has Hamilton meeting Ursinus, Elmira vs. Merchant Marine, and Union vs. Wartburg.

Hoping Daytona Beach weather won't cool RDragons' hot hands. Tonight's temps there dipping into the 30s with Sunday high only in the 50s with wind. Makes for a rugged beach day prior to an early evening tip. Fortunately for us Sarasota-area residents we cruise into the 70s next week -- the way it usually is this time of year in F.L.A.

Brockport State 78 Pitt-Bradford 70

The first half of this game was a back and forth affair that saw 4 ties and 9 lead changes until Pitt-Bradford, down 19-17 with 10 minutes left in the period went on a 13-1 run to open up a double digit lead at 30-20. With only 4:37 left in the half at that point, the Eagles did well to close the gap down to a single point at 38-37 at the break.

The Panthers didn't let up at the start of the 2nd as they continued to lead but the Eagles finally caught them at 46 apiece with 13:50 to go. Panthers ripped off an 8-1 spurt and once again Brockport was trying to play catch up. 7 unanswered points by the Eagles did the trick and the teams were tied at 54 with 6:47 to go. Four lead changes and 3 ties would follow until the Eagles took control with a 9-2 burst that opened up a 71-64 edge with only 1:14 left in the game. Brockport would hit 9 of 10 from the foul line to end any hope of a Panther upset.

John Ivy (5x10 fg, 2x4 3's, 3x5 ft, 5 reb. 3 assist, 2 steals) and Lance Legister (4x12 fg, 1x2 3's, 6x8 ft) each had 15 points to lead Brockport. Matt Lee (4x6 fg, 3x4 3's, 0x1 ft, 5 reb.) and Jordan Major (3x12 fg, 3x12 3's, 2x2 ft, 5 reb.)also had double figures with 11 point each. Mike Gallagher had 9 points (4x5 fg, 1x3 ft) and 8 rebounds off the bench in 16 minutes of floor time. Port was 16x31 inside the arc, but a not so good 9x31 from downtown for an overall 25x62. They were 19x27 from the line. They were beaten 44-30 off the glass but came up big getting 22 turnovers while limiting their miscues to 8.

Pitt-Bradford had 4 players in double figures as well, led by the games's high scorer, Jesse Deloof with 18 points. The Panthers outshot the Eagles in every category and held the lead for a lot longer than Port did in this game but in crunch time just couldn't get it done.

Wells defeated SUNY-Canton (no surprise there) in the first game so tomorrow the Golden Eagles will play the Express in a 2:00 PM start for the tournament championship.

I'll go out on a limb here and predict a Brockport victory by a 82-71 margin

And is the Dean of Scribes going to make that 180 mile drive over to Daytona Beach to see his Red Dragons play? Or are you going to pay Embry-Riddle the $7.95 to watch it online? And what's your prediction on the Cortland-Embry-Riddle game? Inquiring minds would like to know. ;D

Cortland State at Embry-Riddle     6:00 PM

Red Dragons take on the host team at the Land of Magic Classic but hard to figure the outcome here. Oddsmakers have the Eagles favored over Cortland by 6 points. Embry-Riddle is an NAIA II school and the only D3 team they have faced this year was Merchant Marine yesterday. They won that game 81-65 but I think the final score is deceiving. Merchant Marine actually had the lead at halftime 43-36 and was up by 12 points 59-47 with 13 minutes left to play. The Mariners were still up by eight at 64-56 with 9:21 to go when they hit the wall. I don't know what happened, but they missed their next 8 shots, had 5 turnovers, committed 5 fouls, and missed 3 of 4 free throws. They went 7:17 without scoring a single point. The Eagles scored 20 in that stretch and the Mariners found themselves down 76-64 with 3:01 to play. The Mariners scored a single point, a foul shot, with 2:04 left on the clock and never scored again. That's pretty darn hard to do even if you tried to do it. 1 point in 9 minutes and 21 seconds. I think that the Mariners should have won that game. I also think that Cortland is better than the Merchant Marine Academy and won't go 9+ minutes without scoring. Despite the oddsmakers favoring Embry-Riddle I think the Red Dragons are going to outshoot the Eagles and come away with an 80-76 win.

Brockport wins their tournament with a 79-57 win over Wells. Golden Eagles move to 5-4 overall.

Red Dragons worried about Embry-Ridde? Most assuredly. The world's aeronautical leader is the Daytona-College's mantra! As in 'our missiles can take out your Mariner kayaks in quick order.' To wit: Magic's post of Merchant Marine nine minute haywire display to turn around Saturday's outcome. And there's little doubt the Corts can launch from the wild blue yonder. Air to air subversion? We shall see. Hate to make predictions ........cause we're bad at it!! Almost always go the other way. Wish we had the 'Magic Touch.' Hope he does for this one.

And, no, we won't be in attendance ........180 miles is a haul. Lotta miles in Florida, believe me. And nearly $8 to view. We'll pass. At the 6 p.m. tip we'll be finishing some baby backs for the village! Wonder if you get the audio if E-R is involved. You don't otherwise. Yes indeed

Gotta go baste .....

FranElia

To answer the last question by jdex - yes, audio is free for the game. Sorry I didn't know this sooner or I would have posted that info. Link is on the same page as the video and stat links.

magicman

Cortland with an 18-12 lead as Jesse Winter just drained a three pointer, his third one of the game, with 10 minutes left in the first half.

magicman

Cortland leads at the half 29-26 over Embry-Riddle. Jesse Winter 8x12 from the field and 3x5 from downtown, leads all scorers with 20 points.

If you're having trouble listening to the audio on Embry-Riddle's Stretch Internet page, you can also listen at:

Neither team lighting it up. Notice we said team ......J. Winter the exception, of course. Corts overcome early deficit to lead most of the period ......by as many as seven

Earlier,Hamilton over Ursinus 84-77, and Union takes Wartburg 70-52

And, we must add, a nice professional audio call ......
