Oswego's livestats  still not working but the D3hoops scoreboard shows Oswego winning 60-58 with 12 seconds left to play.

magicman

Oswego State hangs on and defeats RIT 63-59. Lakers couldn't have played very well to have this game end up that close.

magicman

Brockport buries St Lawrence 91-62. Bobby Bell with 18 points, John Ivy with 16, Brandon Caruthers with 12, and Mike Gallagher with 10.

Brockport improves to 6-4 (1-2) and will host Geneseo on Tuesday Jan. 8th at 8:00 PM.

While I agree with most of your selections I wouldn't have Union in the top 10. They have compiled an excellent 11-1 record but in doing so have beaten a bunch of teams that are near the bottom of the 412 teams in Division 3. Eight of their 11 wins have come against teams with losing records. Those eight teams have a combined won-loss record of 20-68. The best of the 8 are RIT with a 4-6 record and Utica College (they played them twice) with a 4-8 record. The other 5 teams are 2-9, 2-9, 0-10, 1-10 and 3-6. Union's best wins are against Hartwick and Clarkson. Clarkson, with an 8-2 record is nearly as guilty as Union when it comes to playing cupcakes this year. They lost to Potsdam State 77-65 and Potsdam is in 9th place in the SUNYAC. Hartwick has also played a very weak schedule and their 7-5 record was built against a bunch of losing teams. Hamilton with a 7-5 record at the present time beat the Dutchmen but by the end of the season I'll be surprised if the Continentals have a winning record either. The Massey ratings system shows Union with a strength of schedule of 345. Clarkson's is 332, Hartwick's is 294, and Hamilton's is 193. I think Bard, Vassar and Skidmore are the only Liberty League teams with a worse strength of schedule than Union's. The Raptor's come in at #406 out of 412, Vassar is #399 and Skidmore is #354. Hobart by comparison is ranked at #3 and SLU is #239.

I'll be surprised if Union wins the Liberty League this year. The league as a whole is definitly experiencing a down year but I think Hobart is still the team to beat. St Lawrence has played 4 SUNYAC teams and is 0-4 and didn't even play 3 of the top teams in the YAC.  If Union was in the SUNYAC league or the Empire 8 conference they wouldn't even make the playoffs in either league. The Liberty League is 1-10 against the SUNYAC this year and their lone win was by Skidmore over last place Oneonta 66-63.

I've taken the time in the following post to list the entire East Region with Massey's ranking among the 412 teams in D3 and the 2nd number is their strength of schedule ranking. While I think there are some obvious computer errors (to me anyway) it gives a good idea of how the East teams stack up.

The East Region Rankings for all 39 teams in the Region according to Ken Massey's Rating System. The number in front of the team is their National Ranking. The number following the team is their Strength of Schedule ranking. There are 412 teams in Division III in his rating system and that's what the numbers are based on.These rankings are through games of 1-4-13.

Example:  Rochester is the #2 ranked team in the country out of 412 teams. Their strength of schedule is rated as the 55th toughest schedule out of 412 schedules. Hobart's schedule tops the East region, ranked as the 3rd toughest in the country. Remember these are computer ranking and I don't think they're anywhere near perfect but it's fun to see how the teams stack up. I'll probably do an update a few weeks down the road as I'm sure things will change.

2      Rochester                 55
26    Stevens Tech            57
29    Cortland State           82

380  Alfred                        384
386  Cazenovia                  402
391  D'Youville                   369
405  Houghton                   364

Notes:
*I think Hobart is ranked too high but understand why they are up there with a win over Naz and 2 close losses to Rochester. Personally I think Buffalo State is a better team as well as a few others.

**I think the 3rd toughest schedule in the country is a stretch. Again I believe it's due in part because they played U of R twice, but they also get Bard and Vassar twice each. ;D

^As I stated in my previous post I think that Union is overrated. The 4 teams ranked right below them should all be ranked ahead of the Dutchmen in my opinion and possibly a few more teams as well.

The Fifteen teams with the toughest strength of schedule in the East folowed by their National Ranking are:

1   Hobart                   3
2   Rochester              55
3   Stevens Tech         57
4   Plattsburgh State    73
5   Nazareth               78
6   Cortland State        82
7   NYU                      107
8   Buffalo State          124
9   Elmira                    136
10 Oneonta State        150
11 Potsdam State        155
12 Geneseo State        169
13 New Paltz State      183
14 RIT                       190
15 Utica College          204

Finally here are the rankings that Massey has for the Conferences in the East Region. There are 48 conferences in Division III and he ranks them from 1 to 48 using a number of key statistics.  The number preceding the conference is their national ranking

2.     UAA  (Rochester and NYU)
11.   SUNYAC (10 teams)
26.   Empire 8 (9 teams)
29.   Liberty League (9 teams)
44    AMCC (D'Youville, Hilbert and Medaille)
46    NEAC  (Cazenovia, Keuka, Morrisville State, SUNY-Cobelskill, SUNYIT, and Wells)

Glad you liked it I did it just for you. ;D ;) I see that Ethelred the Unready was already ready and gave you the link to Massey's rating system. If you click on the individual teams it will bring up their entire schedule and give you their past scores and also probabilities of their chances of winning future games. Also note that the numbers I used in my post have all changed slightly because Massey has updated his rating through games of 1-5 and I used figures that were through 1-4. They constantly get updated throughout the year.
You can also find the rankings for the conferences using the drop down menu when you click on the "more" link. Or you can click on the NCAA III link and all the conferences are displayed for you to choose from. If you click on the green Massey logo on the top lefthand corner it opens up all kinds of sports links. As Ethelred said  "Have some fun." Plus k to you.

One game on tap today as the Potsdam State Bears travel to Mahwah, New Jersey to take on the 10th ranked Ramapo Roadrunners at 3:00 PM. I think the Bears have bitten off more than they can chew with today's matchup. Ramapo will come at the Bears with 5 starters all averaging double figures. A pair of 6'1" senior guards, a 6'2" senior guard and a couple of bigs that are also seniors. They average 80 ppg and only give up 66 ppg. Their only setback came in the D3hoops Classic out in Las vegas over the holidays where they were beaten by the #1 ranked North Central Cardinals 67-57. They dug themselves a first half hole and were down by 18 with 13 minutes to play. They fought back to get within 5 points but had to foul and ended up losing by 10. This team could very well make a deep run in the post season. Point spread has the Roadrunners favored by 14. I hope the Bears can keep it that close. I think the Roadrunners will beep beep the Bears to the tune of 85-67. Hope I'm wrong on this one though. Go Bears.

magicman

Potsdam State is hanging with Ramapo as they only trail 43-41 at the half.

Curtis Pierce with 13 points and Mark Lake with 12 to lead the Bears. Will Sanborn leads Ramapo with 19 points. Both teams with 18 rebounds and the Bears with 7 turnovers to 11 for the Roadrunners. Largest lead for Ramapo was 5 points while the Bears had a 3 point lead on 3 ocassions. Numerous ties and lead changes as neither team could open up much daylight. Hope the 2nd half goes as well for Potsdam. Go Bears.

This is a pride game for the Bears, as this weekend is the closest their players get to play in from of their families all season.

Go Bears!

Well they're still hanging in there. Maybe playing in front of the relatives will inspire them to pull out all the stops. Only down 66-61 with 10:21 left to play. Bears got down by 10 but came back to get it down to a single point. Can't quite get over the hump but I'm still hoping. Go Bears.
