Apparently Bears lost 94-80.  There was a tie at 61, but live stats froze after that.

Bears will have a long season giving up 90 points, regardless of who they play.

Yes, I see that the D3hoops scoreboard has posted the final score of 94-80. My live stats froze at 66-61.  Too bad, the Bears were looking good for 30 minutes. Would have liked to have seen how the final 10 minutes played out. Massey hit that one right on the nose with the 14 point spread, unfortunately. I figured it was too much to ask for the upset.

Potsdam State's Curtis Pierce has been named the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the period ending January 6th. Curtis scored 53 points in 2 games over the weekend. He had 30 against Manhattanville and 23 against 10th ranked Ramapo. He was 20x34 from the field, 4x11 from the 3 point line and 9x13 from the stripe. He also had a total of  16 rebounds for the 2 games.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website.

"Curtis Pierce led the Bears to a 1-1 record during a tough non-conference slate. The senior posted a career-high 30 points in an exciting 86-80 comeback win over Manhattanville College. Pierce nearly missed a double-double performance and hit several key shots in the contest. The Brooklyn native then scored 23 points to put his team in contention with the #10 ranked Ramapo Roadrunners. He averaged 26.5 points per game and eight rebounds per game."

The write up states "Pierce nearly missed a double-double performance", when it should have read... he nearly had a double-double. Curtis had 30 points and 9 rebounds in that game. Congratulations to Curtis on an exceptional weekend performance.

Congrats to Curtis Pierce who I affectionally call the "BIONIC MAN". He bounces back from knee injuries like Adrian Peterson. And he's a nice kid to boot!!

And yes magicman, your post of Jake Simmons (last week's POW) was the best that I've seen! ;)

And now it's time for some serious SUNYAc hoops. With 75 games left ( all but 2 are 'Yac contests), the next non -conference game for all but Potsdam (plays Utica college on 1/15) and Oneonta (Plays hamilton on 1/29) will be in the post - season. And with the number of 'Yac playoffs berths reduced to 6 (from 8) every game is that much more important. After reading Magicman's post about our massey rating at 10 (moved to 13th yesterday >:( ) I'm encouraged to see that others have noticed the 'Yac. 1 thing is for sure... the 'Yac didnt schedule cupcakes this season  like many of the other teams in and around NYS. (Notre Dame take note!!!)

Last year the SUNYAC finished 31st in the massey ratings with a 39-36 non-conference record. This year we have consistently hovered around #10 to #15 since late Dec. That's because the teams that we, SUNYAC, have played have been good teams from "historically" great conferences. Our non-confernce schedule this year looks like a who's who from last years NCAA tourney. Teams like St. Josephs (LI) NCAA participant in 11-12 with a 21-5 record, Ithaca E8 champ - NCAA's 11-12, Middlebury 26-4 last season - NCAA "Sweet 16" participant 11-12, Franklin & Marshall  28-3 last season - "Elite 8" participant - currently ranked #14th, NYU 21-6 last season - NCAA 2nd round - currently ranked #34th, Scranton 23-8 last season - "Elite 8" Participant and Eastern Connecticut 24-6 last season & "Sweet 16 " participant ..found out first hand that 'Yac teams are for real! Having a 4-5 record vs. these teams surely must make some take notice.

Our, SUNYAC, non-conference record is currently 42-25 (Win% of .627) . Thats the 8th best winning percentage amongst the 48 D3 conferences (last year it was 39-36- .520%). When it gets around Feb 22nd..23rd and we have 2 more victories (c'mon Potsdam and Oneonta) we would/should have a winning % around .639. Possibly the 5th best win% in the nation. And with it multiple bids to the dance!?

I'm hoping that all the teams that have tasted "non - conference defeat" at the hands of the 'Yac run the table from here on! There wins are good for our conference SOS (Strength of Schedule) which (I Believe) Massey and the NCAA take into account. Now I see why magicman has 10 computers moniters up and running on game night. :D. 1 teams pain is certainly another teams pleasure! ;D 75 games in 35 days. My Tuesday's, Friday's and Saturday's just got more interesting!!! ;)

Three conference games on tap for tonight all starting at 8:00 PM.

Cortland State at New Paltz State

Cortland is the highest ranked SUNYAC team according to Ken Massey's rating system as he has the Red Dragons ranked 29th in the country. He has New Paltz ranked at #241. Needless to say he has Cortland favored to win this game by 12 points. Cortland coming off a split of their holiday games in Florida. They handed Ursinus, a team that hung with nationally ranked Middlebury and Franklin & Marshall, their worst loss of the season at 85-53. Ursinus only lost to both those ranked teams by 5 points. The following day Cortland dropped a 74-71 overtime decision to 14-1 Embry-Riddle on the Florida team's home court. New Paltz has dropped their last 3 games and the Hawks have struggled to win the close ones. They are 0-4 in games decided by 4 points or less. Red Dragons are looking for their 4th straight win over the Hawks and I think they win this one 85-69.

Oswego State at Oneonta State

9-1 Lakers taking on the 1-9 other Red Dragons. Point spread has Oswego favored by 13 but they should win this game by a bigger margin than that. Lakers seem to be making a habit though, of playing down to the competition's level. They open up a sizable margin and then let the other team hang around. They've been outscored in the 2nd half in a number of games where they've had a double digit halftime lead. Oneonta is coming off a 3 week layoff and will find it tough to get up to speed against a Laker team that's played 2 games in the past 5 days. Lakers won a pair from the Red Dragons last year 68-55 and 67-55. I think they win this one 74-57.

Geneseo State at Brockport State

This should be the most competitive game of the night. Geneseo won their last meeting 67-66 and the Golden Eagles won the game before that 67-61. Eagles have won 6 of the last 7 games however. Both teams coming off wins as the Blue Knights improved to 7-3 with a win over Medaille, 64-60, last Wednesday, while Brockport pounded St. Lawrence 91-62 last Saturday. Eagles have reeled off 3 in a row to get to 6-4 on the season.  Brockport has been listed as a 1 point favorite and I expect a close game. I think that Geneseo will walk off Tuttle North with the win, though, by a 74-71 score. I wouldn't mind being wrong on this one so the standings can get tightened up a bit. If the 3 favorites win tonight we'll have a 5 way tie for first place with all five teams possessing a 3-1 league record.

#4431
The fastest half of hoops I think I ever seen as Cortland trails New Paltz 36-33 at the half. Didn't even take 30 minutes to play the half.

Shareef Taylor leads the Hawks with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Matt Devine with 7 points.

Jesse Winter with 15 points for the Red Dragons. He's 5x10 from the field, 4x5 from downtown. Harrison Hefele with 9 points.

Cortland up 17-9 and 20-13 early on. Hawks fight back to close within 1 at 29-28, then reel off 8 unanswered points to grab a 36-29 edge. Hefele gets 2 layups to pull Corts within 3 at the break.

magicman

Oneonta leads Oswego 28-24 at the half.  Dogs having their day so far.
Zach Mager leads Oneonta with 11 points and 4 rebounds. Frankie Kelly with 4 points and 5 rebounds.

Hayden Ward with 11 points to lead the Lakers. Chris Gilkes with 6 points and 4 rebounds.

Oswego up 15-8 with 12:22 left in the half, get outscored 20-9 the rest of the way.

magicman

Brockport leads Geneseo 40-29 at the half.

Blue Knights with early 6-0 and 9-2 lead but Port goes on a 12-0 run to grab a 14-9 advantage. Eagles keep right on flying as they increase the lead to as much as 14 at 38-24 and 40-26. Connor Fedge hits a 3 pointer for Geneseo to cut it to 11 at the break.

Jordan Major is 4x5 from 3 point land to lead Brockport with 12 points. Lance Legister is 6x6 from the stripe and has 9 points.

Brockport has caused 14 Geneseo turnovers in the first half.

Blue Knights led by Jordan Jones with 11 points and Fedge with 8. Geneseo is beating the Eagles off the boards 25-14 but the TO's are killing them.

magicman

Cortland and New Paltz tied at 66 with 1:28 left to play and New Paltz with the ball. Shareef Taylor buries a three, Cortland comes down and misfires on a 3 pointer. Hawks rebound and Taylor Sowah scores on a layup and the lead is 71-66 with 23 seconds left to play. looks like the Hawks are finally going to win a close one. Winter is fouled and makes 1 of 2. ad Cortland quickly fouls. Matt Devine makes them both and Jeremy Smith comes down and buries a triple to make it 73-70. Red Dragons call a timeout with 14 seconds left to play. Cortland quickly fouls on the inbounds pass. Matt Devine goes to the line and makes the first and Cortland calls a time out. Devine makes the 2nd after the TO and Cortland comes down and misfires. Another foul and Devine makes 2 more. This game is over and the final is 77-70. Hawks pull off the upset.

It's a dog day afternoon night, as the lowly Oneonta Red Dragons whip Oswego State 67-57.

magicman

Brockport is trying to make it 3 upsets in a row as they lead the conference leaders 68-59 with 4:48 left to play.

magicman

Brockport holds off Geneseo as they defeat the Blue Knights 87-78.

Plattsburgh State and Buffalo State are very grateful to the Golden Eagles as there is now a 3 way tie for 1st place with the Blue Knights, Bengals and Cardinals all with a 3-1  record.

The Cards do hold the tiebreaker over the Bengals though. ;D

thebear

Regardless of how well the 'yac does in out of conference play, when the league appears to be an "Anyone can beat anyone on a given night" conference it will probably hurt as far as bids go, since the conference leader could have as many as 3 or 4 losses.

Appears parity rules.  That's why they play the games.

first off - happy new year everyone.

second - was a great night for the underdogs last night. finally new paltz came out strong and consistently played together - rather than trying to make it a one-man show...still trying to figure who that one man is after those 3 terrible losses to geneseo, hamilton and delaware valley. also, played much stronger d - np has been terrible defending the 3 this season. much smarter ball tonight.

hawks also did a great job of taming jesse winter (even though he still had 20!) - came out strong with those big 3's but they held him to 4 pts. in the 2nd half.

interesting, yet useless hawk stat? new paltz is 12-0 in 2nd halves this year.

facing a much tougher-than-their-record-reflects oneonta team saturday. hopefully the boys get a streak going. also a tip of the hat to coach rejniak last night - spanbauer and his crew are tough. way to finally make it happen.
