Four games on tap tonight in the conference. All start at 8:00 PM

Geneseo State at Cortland State

Someone has to slow the Blue Knights down. The Red Dragons need to win this game or they will not only fall 2 1/2 games behind but will lose any tie breakers with Geneseo. The teams have split their past 4 meetings.  Oddsmakers have Cortland Favored by 8 points. That may be too much. I see the Red Dragons winning a close one here  74-70.

** Final score Cortland 79 Geneseo 73         Not far off from my prediction

Red Dragons avenge earlier loss with a win that wasn't as close as the final score indicates. Cortland with a 29-26 edge at the break opened the 2nd period with a 16-6 run to grab a 45-32 advantage with only 4:28 gone in the half. They would build the lead to 17 at 56-39 on a 3 pointer by Jeremy Smith with 11:42 left to play. Blue Knights slowly chipped away and got it back to single digits but could never get closer than 6 points. Cortland's lead flucuated between 6 and 9 points for the final 8 minutes of the game.
Jeremy Smith with 23 points was the game's high scorer (9x14 fg, 3x8 3's, 2x3 ft). Jesse Winter had 17 points (3x7 fg, 2x4 3's, 9x10 ft) with 5 assists and Kevin McMahon added 16 points (7x9 fg, 2x3 ft) with 6 rebounds.

Geneseo got 17 points from Gordon Lyons, 15 from Connor Fedge, 11 from Ryan Riefenhauser, and 10 from Jordan Jones. James McKenna had 3 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and a block in 22 minutes off the bench.

Red Dragons shot 50.9% from the field (27x53), 36% from long range (9x25) and 66.7% from the line (16x24). They were outrebounded 36 to 27 and had 12 turnovers to 13 for Geneseo.

Geneseo shot 42.6% from the field (26x61), only 20.0% the 3 point arc (3x15) and 72% from the stripe (18x25).

Big win for Cortland and the rest of the league as they bring the Blue Knights back to the pack. Geneseo is still in sole possession of first place but only by a half game over Plattsburgh, Cortland and Oswego. All 4 teams have 2 losses which will make for some interesting games tomorrow.

Cortland 5-2 (11-3 overall) travels to Brockport  to take on the Golden Eagles at 8:00 PM.

Geneseo 6-2 (10-5 overall) will host Oswego State also at 8:00 PM.

Oneonta State at Potsdam State

Bears looking to win 2 in a row for only the 2nd time this year. They really need a conference win streak in a hurry to have any hope of making the playoffs. Oneonta playing better than their 2-10 record would suggest. Both teams are 1-5 in YAC play and both teams have yet to win a conference game on the road. Teams have split their past 12 games and last year both won at home. Point spread favors the Bears by 8 points and I think the home court club will prevail once again. I'll take the Bears 75-69.

**Final Score  Potsdam 82  Oneonta 62   Bears scored 7 more Oneonta scored 7 less but it adds up to the 144 that I predicted and I had the winner. ;D

Bears jumped out to an early double digit lead as they opened up with a 19-5 burst right out of the gate. They maintained that margin and still up 14, at 32-18 with 4:30 left in the period they were outscored by the Red Dragons 16-6 to allow them to pull within 4 points at the break 38-34. Just like the 1st period the Bears once again opened with a flourish as they outscored Oneonta 16-4 to open up another 16 point lead, 54-38, after five minutes had gone by. The Red Dragons were never in it from that point on The Bears steadily increased the lead until it reached 24 points at 76-52.
Bears were led by Mark Lake with 25 points (10x14 fg, 2x2 3's, 3x4 ft), 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Curtis Pierce had 11 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block. Joe Estramonte had 10 points, and Josh Lambert had 9 points with 6 rebounds. Both Zac Adam and Colin Peterson had 8 points each. Good balanced scoring from the Bears tonight. What was impressive about their win was they were able to dominate without the services of big man Rob Duquette, who went down with an injury on Tuesday night against Utica College. No word on how severe his injury is (where's thebear when you need him?) and whether ot not he'll be in uniform for tomorrow's game against New Paltz. Somehow, I doubt that he will be.
Bears shot the ball well tonight going 30x59 from the field (50.8%), 7x16 from downtown (43.8%) and 15x19 (78.9%) from the line. They had 44 rebounds to 32 for Oneonta and had 13 turnovers to 14 for the Red Dragons.

Oneonta was led by Zach Mager with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Frankie Kelly had 14 points 4 assists and 4 rebounds, while Jack Dignan had 11 points.

Potsdam 2-5 (6-8 overall) will host New Paltz on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
Oneonta 1-6 (2-11 overall) will travel over to Plattsburgh for a 4:00 PM game against the Cardinals.

Brockport State at Oswego State

Another big game to help sort out the contenders. Lakers need a win to keep pace with the leaders. Golden Eagles need a win to maintain a playoff spot. Lakers already with 2 unexpected losses in conference play can ill afford another home setback. Lakers have won 6 of last 7 meetings including an 81-80 win at Brockport back on December 4th. Point spread favors the home team by 4 and I think it will be a barnburner as well. Lakers will pull it out though, 80-77.

** Final score Oswego 76 Brockport 68
This game was not as close as I thought it would be but I did have the winner and only missed their total by 4 points.

Brockport lives and dies by the 3 pointer and tonight it cost them as they were only 5 for 25 from long distance. It was a closely contested first period, that saw the Lakers pull away from a 25-22 deficit to end the half on 12-3 run and go into the locker room up 34-28. Oswego picked up where they left off when the 2nd period got under way. Kyle Covley scored 8 points to fuel a 15 to 7 Laker burst and a little over 4 minutes into the stanza they had a double digit 14 point lead. The lead grew to 18 before the Golden Eagles whittled it down to single digits late in the game but Oswego was comfortably in control the entire 2nd half.
Lakers got a well rounded effort as they had 5 players in double figure led by Chris Gilkes with 16 points. Hayden Ward with his lowest output of the year of 10 points, but still managed a double-double as he had 10 rebounds as well to lead in that category. Kyle Covley had 12 points and Sean Michele had 10 points with 4 assists. Daniel Ross had 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals.

John Ivy was the game's leading scorer with 23 points on 9 of 12 from the field. Ivy also had 5 rebounds 2 assists and 2 steals. Brandon Caruthers had 18 points 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 blocks. ??? :o (How does a 5'11" guard get 4 blocks in a game?) Oswego won the battle of the boards 37-32. The Lakers had 14 turnovers to 13 for the Eagles.

The Lakers improve to 5-2 (12-2 overall) and will travel to Geneseo for a Saturday night matchup with the Blue Knights at 8:00 PM. The stakes: First Place in the SUNYAC. Geneseo entered the weekend with a game and a half lead over 4 other teams. They could find themselves in 4th place after this weekend if they lose to Oswego.

Brockport falls to 4-4 (9-6 overall) and in sole possession of 6th place in the YAC. They will host Cortland on Saturday night at 8:00 PM in a battle of long range bombers. The over/under for 3 point attempts in this game by both teams is 47.

New Paltz State at Plattsburgh State

Hawks come into this game playing their best ball of the season. They've won 2 in a row in the YAC to move into a tie for 2nd with the Cardinals, Lakers, and Cortland. Tonight they will be looking to even their record and get back to the .500 mark at 7-7. Cardinals finally got a win in 2013 beating Brockport on the road 82-81. They opened the year with 3 straight losses, but all were to quality teams. Now they need to protect home court. Cardinals with 2 big road wins, have yet to lose at home but only have played 2 conference games there. Point spread favors Plattsburgh by 6 points. Cards have had the Hawks number over the past 6 years as Plattsburgh has went 13-1 against  New Paltz in that time span. Hawks bring big numbers into tonight's contest and upset possibilites are certainly there. Seniors Shareef Taylor and Matt Devine are both All Conference performers for New Paltz while 6'7" freshman Deveino McRae could be the latest big man to give the Cards problems inside. I think the Cards will be ready though and I see them winning this game 83-76.

** Final score Plattsburgh 75 New Paltz 70
Neither team shot particularly well which prevented me from getting close to my predicted score, Did have the winner though which gave me a 14-2 record in the past 8 days.

Plattsburgh led for most of the 1st half by as much as 9 points but every time it looked as though the Cards were going to turn this into a laugher they would let the Hawks back into the game. The Cards held the Hawks top 3 players, Matt Devine, Shareef Taylor and Deveino McRae to a total of 9 points in the first half, yet Plattsburgh only had a 2 point 30-28 lead at the break. The Cards missed 7 layups in the period, several of which were uncontested.  The Hawks opened up the 2nd period with a layup by McRae, a 3 pointer by Devine and another layup by McRae to take a 35-32 lead. The Cards responded by inserting Reggie Williams into the lineup to counter the Hawks' McRae. The move worked as McRae only scored 2 more points the rest of the game. Plattsburgh reacted to their first deficit, since they trailed at 4-3, by reeling off 11 unanswered points to go in front 43-35. Leading the charge was 5 points from Shamoy McIntosh, 4 points from John Perez and a basket and several big rebounds from Williams. The Cardinals would never trail again and the closest the Hawks could get was 3 points on several occasions, the last coming at 54-51 with 9:42 left to play. Another 11-2 run by Plattsburgh put the lead at 65-53 and the Cards maintained a 5 to 10 point lead the rest of the way. A meaningless 3 pointer at the buzzer by Devine made it seem closer than it actually was.

Plattsburgh was led by Shamoy McIntosh who grabbed scoring honors with 23 points (8x18 fg, 3x8 3's, 4x6 ft). John Perez had 12 points (4x13 fg, 4x4 ft), and 8 rebounds. Reggie Williams only scored 6 points but he was definitely the difference maker in this game. The big guy came into the game with the Cards behind and took control of the inside with his rebounding, his defense and his hustle. He ended up with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and a steal in his 13 minutes on the floor. Point guard Chris Manning did his usual thing and had 5 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and a block in 26 minutes. Mike Mitchell, who ran the point in Manning's absence had 6 points, 4 assists and 2 steals in 14 minutes. Kalik Parker had 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 15 minutes. Cards didn't shoot that well as they were only 23x70 from the field (32.9%). They were 7x21 from long range (33.3%) and 22x29 from the line(75.9%). They won the battle of the boards 47 to 40 and had 19 turnovers to 25 for the Hawks.

New Paltz was led by Matt Devine with 22 points (7x18 fg, 4x8 3's, 4x4 ft) and 7 rebounds. Shareef Taylor had a double-double with 13 points (4x12 fg, 1x5 3's, 4x4 ft) and 10 boards. Taylor Sowah came off the bench to score 13 points (3x5 fg, 1x2 3's, 6x9 ft). Deveino McRae had 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 blocks. The Hawks shot 23x59 from the field (39%), 9x23 from long range (39.1%) and 15x19 from the line (78.9%).

Plattsburgh improves to 5-2 (9-5 overall) and will host Oneonta on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM.
New Paltz falls to 4-3 (6-8 overall) and will travel over to Potsdam to face the Bears at the same time on Saturday.

Full slate of games today in the SUNYAC:

Pressed for time, here are some quick picks.

New Paltz State at Potsdam State  4 PM

Potsdam's  modest win streak will end today with no Rob Duquette going for the Bears. Oddsmakers have Potsdam favored by 1. Hawks rebound from yesterday's loss and win this one 84-78.

Oneonta State at Plattsburgh State   4  PM

Plattsburgh's hoping to move into 1st place if Geneseo falters later today. Cards are favored by 15 and that seems to be a good number, but I think they win by a bigger margin. Plattsburgh wins 86-64.

Cortland at Brockport  8 PM

Red Dragons and Golden Eagles could hoist more 3 point attempts between them, than fg's inside the arc. Oddsmakers have made Cortland a 3 point favorite. Port could definitely pull off the upset here on their home court but I don't think they will. Red Dragons win this one 76-71.

Oswego State at Geneseo State  8 PM

Lakers looking for a share of first place. Blue Knights looking to stay out of 4th. Point spread has Geneseo favored by 5 points and they will probably win this game but I think I'm going with the Lakers to pull off the upset here and tighten the conference race up even further. I think Hayden Ward will have a big game and the Lakers walk out of Alumni Fieldhouse with a 71-68 win.

Fredonia State at Buffalo State  8 PM

Bengals need to break their losing streak. Along comes Fredonia just what the doctor ordered. Blue Devils also on a losing streak but get no relief tonight. Point spread has the Bengals favored by 13. Even a short-handed Buffalo State team should take this one and hope that Cortland wins at Brockport to give the Bengals, at least temporarily, the final playoff spot. Buffalo State wins 86-67.

Plattsburgh 82 Oneonta 75

The Cardinals tried hard to give this one away but in the end Coach Curle wouldn't let them. A tongue lashing during a timeout straightened out the team. Then the smallest guy on the floor entered the game and scored 14 points down the stretch to make sure that Oneonta wouldn't pull off another big upset at the Cardinals' expense.

Cardinals went in front early, after Oneonta opened the scoring, on back to back buckets by John Perez. Oneonta tied it at 4 and then the Cardinals were off to the races as they quickly opened up a double digit lead. They slowly increased their advantage until the were up 28-13 which would be the largest lead of the game. Yesterday's leading scorer Shamoy McIntosh, once again got the Cards going, as he buried a pair of triples and scored 8 points during that stretch. To Oneonta's credit the Red Dragons refused to fold and cut into the Plattsburgh lead. They got within 6 at 36-30 with a minute to go in the half, but the Cards Ezra Hodgson hit a three pointer and was fouled in the process. He made the and one for a rare 4 point play to once again make it a 10 point lead. The Cards got the ball back after an Oneonta turnover and as they held it for a final shot they turned it over with 3 seconds left. Rushing upcourt, Oneonta's Zach Mager threw up a prayer from over 30 feet as the buzzer went off...nothing but net, and the Cards went into the break only up 7, 40-33, when it could have been a 12 or 13 point lead. The Cardinals did bump the lead back to double digits shortly after the 2nd half started and for the first 8 minutes the lead would flucuate between 5 and 10 points. Oneonta got a pair of 3 pointers to slice the lead to 55-53 and seconds later got a turnover which prompted the Plattsburgh coach to call a time out. It wasn't pretty as he ripped into the team for their blame game tatics and overall careless play. Several minutes later with 9:49 left to play, backup point guard Mike Mitchell was inserted into the game and the 5'8" sophomore responded with a 3 pointer 15 seconds later. He would go on to score a total of 14 points in the final 9 minutes, a career high for him, and none were bigger than a driving layup right after Oneonta had retaken the lead at 65-64. The Red Dragons came right back however and retook the lead again on a layup by Jackson Zuvic, but Mitchell was huge once again with another long range bomb that gave the Cards the lead for good. Consecutive layups by McIntosh and Hodgson after 2 Oneonta turnovers gave Plattsburgh the daylight they needed at 73-67 and they closed out the Red Dragons by breaking their press for 2 easy baskets and hitting 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch.

Plattsburgh really played poorly for most of the game. They started out in fine form but getting that early lead seemed to make them complacent and they certainly have lacked a killer instinct. Both games on Friday and Saturday should have never been as close as they ended up. To the opponents credit both teams played well at times and fought back from double digit deficits, but the Cardinals seemed to lose focus and missed so many easy shots that it left us spectators shaking our heads in amazement. We won't be so lucky if we play like that in the upcoming stretch of 5 road games.

Shamoy McIntosh was a bright spot over the weekend as he once again led the Cardinals in scoring with 18 points (7x13 fg, 2x6 3's, 2x2 ft). Shamoy also had 6 rebounds and 6 assists. He should certainly get some major consideration for the SUNYAC Player of the Week award. Ezra Hodgson had 17 points (7x11 fg, 2x3 3's, 1x3 ft), 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. Mike Mitchell was nearly perfect as he had 14 points on 3x3 from the field, 2x2 from long range and 6x7 from the line. He clearly was the difference maker today. John Perez had 8 points and 6 rebounds, while Chris Manning had  5 rebounds, 5 assists and 9 steals. Plattsburgh had a better shooting effort today than yesterday as they were 28x57 from the field (49.1%), 9x20 from 3 point range (45%), and 17x25 from the line (68%). They had 32 rebounds to 26 for Oneonta and 14 of those rebounds were on the offensive end resulting in 11 2nd chance points. Both teams were sloppy with the ball as Ononta had 22 turnovers and the Cardinals had 18. The Cards got 25 points off those turnovers while limiting the Red Dragons to only 9 points off the Plattsburgh miscues.

Oneonta also had 3 players in double figures led by an outstanding game by Zach Mager. Mager grabbed scoring honors with 26 points (8x14 fg, 1x4 3's (the 1st half buzzer beater) 9x10 ft), 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Only a sophomore, he'll be an All Conference performer before his career is done. Jackson Zuvic is another young player with great potential. The freshman forward had 15 points ( 7x10 fg, 1x3 3's). Frankie Kelly last year's Rookie of the Year had 10 points (4x6fg, 1x2 3's, 1x2 ft), with 9 assists and 4 rebounds. Dan Lee had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Dragons shot 26x49 (53.1%), 6x17 from downtown (35.3%) and 17x23 from the line (73.9%)

Plattsburgh ups their conference record to 6-2 (10-5 overall) and is still tied for 2nd place but the 5 way tie for 2nd that existed 10 days ago has now been narrowed to Plattsburgh and Cortland. Those Red Dragons do hold a tiebreaker over the Cardinals but we'll try and take care of that on Feb. 15th. Cards will next travel over to their North Country neighbor and rival, Potsdam State, for a matchup with the resurgent Bears on Tuesday the 22nd.

Oneonta slips to 1-7 in the YAC (2-12 overall) and will host the battle of the Red Dragons as Cortland comes to town on Tuesday. These Red Dragons may be 2-12 but they are one of the best 2-12 teams you'll ever see. I can see now, how they upset Oswego State 12 days ago. They will pull off another before the season is over. Next year they will be a solid contender if all those young players stay healthy and return to school.

Kudos go out to Curtis Pierce, who moved into the top 10 ranks of Potsdam basketball scorers over the weekend.

Joins some pretty fair ballplayers; Steve Babiarz, Derek Rowland, Ed Jachim, Brendan Mitchell (D-III POY), Andre Peterson, Mike Deane, Leroy Witherspoon (only 2X D-III POY), Damon Brown, and Ted Bence, and displacing the great Mo Woods from the top 10.

Congrats to Curtis, he has been a leader and solid citizen since the day he arrived at Potsdam.

Curtis Pierce would have played quality minutes under Jerry Welsh and those teams from the 80's.  He will be first team SUNYAC.  The Bears have brought back the Maxcy Magic this year, only 1 home loss.  I believe this team will make a run in the SUNYAC schedule and then the playoffs.  They hit the century mark on Saturday, it took 2OT's.  Its been a long time since I've seen a score like that.  They didn't roll over but made a run and overcame everything New Paltz brought.  Look forward to more quality basketball from the North Country.  GO BEARS!!!

+1 for Curtis!!

I could insert "BENGALS" in the beginning of magicman's description of the Plattsburgh game. They too sure tried to "give this 1 away"! 2 intentional fouls, the 2nd 1 coming with 20 seconds left and my BENGALS  up by 4 (go figure). Fredonia made the 2 free throws but couldn't add anything else!!

I was definitly encouraged by the continued good play of Seth Runge (15 pts- 7 boards) who has had to step up big time and freshman Bradley Doyley who went 7-7 from the stripe. Jake Simmons was...... Jake Simmons. And we needed everyone of his 42 points to pull this 1 out!

Brockport in 49 hours (at Brockport   >:( ). Jake Simmons against the "Rochester 6" ( 6 kids from Rochester, on Brockports team, where Jake played High school ball). That usually makes for an interesting game when that "reunion" takes place. A win puts my BENGALS at 5-4 and in the top half of SUNYAC at the midway point. 4 straight home games after that vs. Plattsburgh. Potsdam, Oswego and Cortland.

Love the 'Yac :D

Go BENGALS!!!! ;)

At the midway point in the SUNYAC I think after Geneseo had a mild upset against Oswego. I still think Oswego and Cortland are the 2 best teams in this league. the 6 teams that will get into the Sunyac Championships all have a chance to upset and win this league and get an NCAA bid. This league could possible have 3 teams in the NCAA tournament. If Cortland and Oswego stay with 3,4,5 losses they wll get an at large if they dont win their conference tournament.
