At the midway point in the SUNYAC I think after Geneseo had a mild upset against Oswego. I still think Oswego and Cortland are the 2 best teams in this league. the 6 teams that will get into the Sunyac Championships all have a chance to upset and win this league and get an NCAA bid. This league could possible have 3 teams in the NCAA tournament. If Cortland and Oswego stay with 3,4,5 losses they wll get an at large if they dont win their conference tournament.

That's be nice, but I think either Cortland or Oswego have to win out and lose in the conference championship for the SUNYAC to get 2 bids.  There are a lot of good teams out there

I will be in town and hoping I can catch the Cortland-Oswego game Saturday... looking forward to a good match-up.

d-mac,
Lucky you!! I think it will be a good matchup. Wish I could join you and say hello but the 4+ hour trip is a little too far. I will be watching the game online however. Make sure and sit right behind the Laker's bench where we can get a good look you during the timeouts! ;D I think it might be a tough game for Oswego though. I'm picking Cortland to win a close one 75-72.

Well I am making a 5:30 drive to be there for that and other sporting event (which is why I am in town)... so why are you slacking at not driving 4? :)

Well... too bad I will miss you. No guarantees where I will be sitting... depends on what I want to take in - plus try and take some pictures.

My Plattsburgh State Cardinals are taking on Fredonia State at 4 PM and I will be sitting in front of my computer, hoping that the video feed is a decent quality broadcast. Plus I've made that trip to Oswego a number of times back in my college days. The last time was in January of 1970 and a blizzard was whipping off the Lake something fierce that day. I pulled into the parking lot on campus, opened my door and the wind blew it so hard it broke the hinges and sprung the door. I've never been back. ;D Weather forecast for the North Country this weekend is cold, cold, and colder. Bundle up!!

Jake Simmons is up to his old tricks as he was selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the 2nd time in the past 4 weeks.

Jake scored 18 points against Geneseo on Tuesday night. He also had 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in 36 minutes

On Saturday against Fredonia he just missed his career high of 43 points as he dropped 42 on the Blue Devils. He added 4 rebounds and 3 steals in 37 minutes.

His 2 game totals were 20x36 from the field (55.5%), 9x15 from downtown (60%), and 11x16 from the line (68.7%). He had 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals.

I said back on December 14th when he broke the all time Buffalo State scoring record that he had a good chance to break the 2000 point barrier. He now has 1844 points and with at least 10 games left to play he needs to average 15.6 points the rest of the way to hit that seldom seen career total. Too bad Buffalo State had a team cancel out on them earlier in December. Hopefully the Bengals can pick up the pace and make the SUNYAC playoffs to guarantee Jake an 11th game. For the season he's averaging 19.6 points per game. That would project him to end up with around 2040 to 2060 points depending on if the Bengals get a playoff game. Here's hoping this terrific young man attains that coveted honor.

I'm not sure where Jake will end up on the all time SUNYAC scoring list as the SUNYAC record book doesn't look to be very well maintained. The record book shows Geneseo great, Scott Fitch, at the top of the list with 1459 points. It says regular season points. Why they wouldn't include all his games seems strange and I don't know where they got that 1459 total points from because Fitch ended up with 2634 total points and I know he didn't score 1175 points in post season games. At any rate Jake will end up as one of the most prolific scorers in SUNYAC history. It's too bad a conference as old and as great as the YAC doesn't have a record book that's accurate and up to date. Plattsburgh State standout, Anthony Williams who only had a 3 year career scored 1734 points in the league and they show him with 926 points. Oswego's Chad Burridge is nowhere to be found with his 1865 career point total. Sad state of affairs.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

"Jake Simmons averaged 30.0 points in two games, including finishing one point shy of matching career best with 42 points in win over Fredonia. Simmons was 14 of 19 shooting for the game, including 7 of 9 from 3-point range. He shot 56-percent from the field for the week and 60-percent from behind the arc"

Once again I like my writeup better. ;)

It was a heck of week for individual performances in the YAC. here are some Honorable mentions for Player of the Week that would normally be good enough to grab the POTW honors:

Mark Lake from Potsdam State had a pair of big games as he scored 25 points against Oneonta on Friday night in a Bears 82-62 win. He came back with an even bigger effort the next afternoon, scoring 34 points in a double overtime victory against New Paltz to help the Bears extend their winning streak to 3 games, something they hadn't done since January 31st through February 10th of 2009, a span of nearly 4 years. Lake averaged 29.5 ppg as the Bears tried to get back into the playoff race. he was 22x31 from the field (70.9%), 3x5 from 3 point range (60%) and 12x14 from the foul line (85.7%). He grabbed 7 rebounds, had 8 assists and 7 steals.

Jeremy Smith from Cortland State scored 23 points against Geneseo on Friday night and followed that up with 35 points against Brockport the next day for an average of 29 ppg as the Red Dragons went 2-0. He was 23x32 from the field (71.8%), 7x16 from long range (43.7%) and 5x6 from the stripe (83.3%). He had 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Shamoy Mcintosh from Plattsburgh State scored 23 points Friday night as the Cardinals defeated New Paltz 75-70 to extend their domination over the Hawks. The next day Shamoy had 18 points to lead the Cards again in a win over Oneonta. He averaged 20.5 points in the 2 games. McIntosh's totals were 15x31 from the field (48.3%), 5x13 from beyond the arc (38.4%) and 6x8 from the line (75%). He added 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Plattsburgh has probably got the deepest rotation in the conference this year which limits floor time for their starters. It's hard for anyone to put up big numbers like the starters on other teams who routinely average 30+ minutes a game. No starter for the Cards averages more than 26 minutes per game. Seven different players have taken turns leading the Cardinals in game scoring honors and their rotation has 10 players averaging double digit minutes. McIntosh was the first Cardinal player to lead the team in scoring in back to back games all year.

I know there were a few more players who had a decent week but these were the ones that stood out to me and thought they deserved a little ink here on the SUNYAC board.

Big slate of games this evening as all 10 teams are in action. We'll see if the results tighten up the playoff race or create some separation. I'll try to break things down a little later on after I get some sleep. Have to finish my Top 25 Posters' Poll first or Mr. Ypsi will be all over me.

The SUNYAC struck it rich this week as SUNYAC PLayer of the Week, Jake Smith, and one of my honorable mention players, Jeremy Smith, got noticed on the big stage as they were both named to the D3hoops Team of the Week for games from Jan. 14th through Jan. 20th. Not sure but this may be the first time that 2 players from the YAC made the Team of the Week for the same time period.

Here's the write ups from the D3hoops front page:

"Jake Simmons
Simmons finished with 42 points in an 87-85 win over Fredonia. In the game he was 14-of-19 from the field and 7-of-9 from 3-point range. He averaged 30.0 points and 5.5 rebounds." (My note: See my previous post for his complete 2 game totals)

"Jeremy Smith
Smith led Cortland with 23 points in a win over SUNYAC leader Geneseo and tallied 35 points, two shy of his career high, in a win at Brockport. He hit 14 of 18 shots vs. Brockport and shot 72 percent from the field over the two games, including 7-for-16 from 3-point range."

Note:
Mark Lake from Potsdam State could just as easily have been the 3rd guard on the Team of the Week with the huge numbers he put up in the Bears 2 wins over the weekend. Actually I think his overall numbers were better than anyone that was on the TOTW. But then that would be terribly greedy of the YAC and also too much to ask. ;)

A nice week for all 3 players. Here's the link to the complete TOTW:  http://d3hoops.com/awards/tow/2012-13/week9

I know you guys like the Team of the Week:

http://www.d3hoops.com/awards/tow/2012-13/week9

Yes we do!!! And I was reading the front page article and typing up my post as you were posting the front page link. ;D Those guys that choose the Team of the Week sure know their stuff. ;)

Pat,  Was Mark Lake nominated, I know you can't load the team with SUNYAC players but just wondered if he was in the mix?

Pat Coleman

Those two were the only nominees from the SUNYAC this week.

All 10 teams in action tonight. All games starting at 8 PM. Too busy today and pressed for time so it'll be some quick picks

Cortland State at Oneonta State

Second place Red Dragons take on the last place Red Dragons. The Cortland variety breathes more fire. Oddsmakers favor Cortland by 15. Oneonta will be hard pressed to keep it that close but I think they could if they play like they did against Plattsburgh last Saturday. Cortland leads this series 8-4 over the past 6 years. They win again 81-64.

Oswego State at New Paltz State

Probably the most one sided series in current SUNYAC history. Lakers have won the last 18 meetings. Tonight could be the Hawks night.
Oswego needs a win to stay in contact with the leaders. New Paltz needs a win to stay in the playoff hunt. Point spread favors the Lakers but only by the slimmest of margins. I also think it will be close and see the Oswego jinx continue as the Lakers walk out of Hawk center with a 79-75 win.

Fredonia State at Geneseo State

The top against the bottom as the 7-2 league leading Blue Knights take on the 1-7 Blue Devils. Someone will be singing the blues when this one is over and it won't be the 16 point favored Geneseo squad. The Blue Knights lead this series 8-5 over the past 6 years and will take this one 82-61.

Buffalo State at Brockport State

Both teams fightng for the final playoff spot at this stage. The Golden Eagles at 4-5 are a half game behind the 4-4 Bengals. Bengals still not playing with a full deck and Brockport always gives them problems. Eagles lead this series 8-5 over the past 6 seasons. Brockport won all three meetings last year...Buff State won all three games the year before that. Eagles favored in this contest by 5. Three point shooting could determine this one. The over/under on long distance attempts is 45. I'll take the over on the 3 pointers hoisted up and think the Eagles will protect home court. Brockport wins a close one 87-83.

Plattsburgh State at Potsdam State

Plattsburgh leads this series 8-3 over the past 6 years but the Bears took it to them last year in Potsdam. Plattsburgh is a better team than last year's version but so to are the Bears. Cards playing better than most on the road with 2 solid wins at Oswego and Brockport. They bring a 6-2 mark into this game and look to stay in the thick of the race. Bears playing well at home against the YAC with a 3-1 record. Potsdam has won 3 in a row and, at 3-5 in the YAC, needs a win to climb back into the playoff picture. Don't know if Bears big man Rob Duquette will be in uniform tonight or not. Injured last week against Utica, he hasn't played since. The injury is unknown to me. (where's "thebear" when you need him..oh out in California probably) He will be missed. Again the point spread is a single point in favor of the Cards. I think their tough non-conference schedule has prepared Plattsburgh for this type of game. I'll take my Cardinals to win 77-71.

Plattsburgh leads Potsdam 39-38 at the half.

Back and forth 1st period between these 2 teams with Potsdam taking the largest lead at 21-15. Cards would respond with an 14-6 run fueled by 5 points from Shavar Fields and a triples by Ed Correa, Mike Mitchell and Kalik Parker to go back in front 29 -27. The period featured 7 lead changes and 8 ties with the Cardinals Reggie Williams getting a putback at the buzzer to give Plattsburgh the 1 point edge. The Cards got balanced scoring as  John Perez leads them with 8 points. Jordan Moody, Mike Mitchell and Kalik Parker all have 6 points. Shavar Fields has 5 but doesn't show up in the box score on live stats. Reggie Williams has 4 points while Shamoy McIntosh and Ed Correa both have 3.

Bears were led by Mark Lake with 12, Curtis Pierce with 8, Joe Estramonte with 7, Zac Adams with 6, andBrandon Williams with 5.
