Cortland downs Oneonta 64-54 although nearly wasting a 16 point lead. OState within 52-49 with just under 6' left. J. Winter picks up visiting CSt RDragons

No quit in OSters who go on 9-0 run to slice Corts 43-27 bulge. Z. Mager, J. Zuvic, F. Kelly pace Oneonta comeback. T. Parker's triple draws hosts within 45-42 at 10 minute mark. Winter calms Cortland nerves on three Oneonta approaches thereafter. Mager free throws pull OSt to 52-49. Winter immediately cashes a layup and accompanying foul toss to begin Cortland pull away. Four points from J. Smith make it 61-49.

Winter winds up with 17 pts(5x9fg, 5x5ft), 4 assts; K. McMahon 16 pts, 11 rebs; Smith 14 pts(6x11fg), 4 assts. CSt 25x47fg, 7x16 3s. Oneonta's Mager with 22 pts(7x13fg, 3x3 3s); J. Dignan 14 pts. OSt 20x51fg, 9x22ft

Brockport defeats Buffalo St. 97-81

Oswego digs itself from 69-61 hole with 6:09 left to win at New Paltz 80-78. Actually, NP held 71-62 edge at 4:53 on S. Taylor layup. Lakers C. Gilkes followed with two FTs and trey before a S. Michele hoop bringing OSt to 71-69. A trade of leads followed. Gilkes lands a 'three' at 1:31 for a 77-75 Oswego lead. At 1:13 NP K. Donovan connects for three and the reversal. At 0:54 twas Michele scoring a layup for a 79-78 OSt lead. He was fouled on the play, misses from the line but grabs the rebound. H. Ward caps the scoring with the first of two FTs at 0:03. Frosh K. Covley pours in 29 pts(10x18fg, 7x14 3s) off the Oswego bench in a 30' stint. His seven treys one off the school record. Gilkes with 16 pts, 5 rebs; H. Ward 9 pts(2x7fg) in 29'. S. Taylor counts 29 pts(11x14fg, 3x6 3s), 3 assts, 6 rebs in 37' in defeat; M. Devine 20 pts, 6 rebs, 3 assts. Oswego 26x65fg, 12x32 3s, 16x23ft. NP 29x56fg, 10x22 3s, 10x12ft

Plattsburgh State 85 Potsdam 63    I predicted a much closer game with my 77-71 score but my total of 148 was right on the button. ;D

The Cardinals came out for the 2nd half and just put it to the Bears, turning a closely contested game into a rout. At the 17:25 mark the score was Plattsburgh 44 Potsdam 42. Two minutes and 22 seconds later it was 56-44 and  it only got worse for the Bears. A 3 pointer by Shamoy McIntosh, a steal by John Perez and a layup by Jordan Moody, were followed by another Perez theft, which he laid in, and after Potsdam misfired on their possession Moody hit another 3 pointer and the lead had quickly ballooned to double digits. McIntosh followed with a steal and a layup, Perez got another layup, and Chris Manning drove for 1 more layup and it was now 62-44. Mark Lake finally stopped the bleeding for the Bears with a jumper but McIntosh buried a 3, Manning scored again and Ed Correa, swished a 3 and scored on a layup and it was 74-47 and the victory cigar was lit with 7:27 left to play. Coach Curle emptied his bench and it was just a question of what the final margin would be.

Plattsburgh was led by John Perez with 16 points (7x9 fg, 2x2 ft),4 rebounds and 4 steals. Jordan Moody had 13 points (5x8 fg, 1x2 3's, 2x2 ft) and Shamoy McIntosh was close behind with 12 (4x8 fg,2x5 3's, 2x3 ft). McinTosh added 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and a block. Freshman Ed Correa came off the bench and totaled 11 points (4x10 fg, 3x7 3's) and 4 rebounds in 12 minutes. Reggie Williams only had 4 points but was the leading rebounder in the game with 9. He added 3 steals and a block in 22 minutes. Both Mike Mitchell and Kalik Parker came off the bench to bury a pair of 3-balls. Shavar Fields doesn't show up in the live stats box score but must have scored 9 points as the box only shows Plattsburgh with 76 total points when they scored 85. The video broadcast from Potsdam is really poor quality. I've watched a number of their broadcasts and the video is herky-jerky full of stops and starts so you never get to see actual live action.  It's similar to when poor weather affects your TV dish and the picture breaks up. Someone needs to work on fixing that.

Plattsburgh shot 28x60 from the field (46.7%), 10x24 from 3 point land (41.7%), and 10x11 from the line (90.9%) I believe their highest free throw percentage in maybe 6 years. They won the battle off the glass 43-36 and had 17 turnovers to 19 for Potsdam.

Potsdam was led by Mark Lake with 17 points (6x8 fg, 2x3 3's, 3x4 ft) and 4 rebounds. Curtis Pierce had 10 points (3x13 fg, 2x9 3's, 2x3 ft) as did Josh Lambert (3x8 fg, 4x5 ft). Zac Adams had 9 points and 5 rebounds, while Brandon Williams had 8 points and 7 rebounds.

The Bears shot 22x60 from the field (36.7%), only 6x21 from downtown (28.6%) and 13x20 from the line (65%).

Plattsburgh improves to 7-2 in the YAC (11-5 overall) at the halfway point of conference play.  They are back on the road this weekend to take on Buffalo State on Friday evening at 8:00 PM and then Fredonia on Saturday afternoon. The Cards remained tied with Cortland for 2nd place,a half game behind Geneseo. Plattsburgh and Geneseo have the best road records in the conference as they are the only teams with 3 road wins. Plattsburgh's game tonight was the 1st of 5 straight conference road games, (who makes up these crazy schedules?), a brutal stretch before they finish with 5 straight home games.

Potsdam falls to 3-6 in conference play (7-9 overall) and stays in sole possession of 8th place. They will follow their travel partner, Plattsburgh, to the western part of the state to face the same two team this weekend.

Went 5 for 5 with my predictions tonight.

Cortland 64 Oneonta 54

I had this with a much bigger number for the winning Red Dragons with my 81-64 forecast. Only 7 3's for the Cortland boys tonight . Winter or Smith usually get almost that many by themselves. As jdex stated the doldrums set in after that big cushion was built and that held the score down. I witnessed the same thing last weekend when my Cardinals pretty much played the same way. They allowed a big lead to evaporate and Oneonta actually came back and took the lead for several possessions befoe the Cards put them away. And as jdex stated the Oneonta variety of red Dragons don't quit.

Brockport 97 Buffalo State 81

I had Port winning this one  87-83. Close with my Bengal half but the Eagles didn't want stop at 87. I'm saddened by the fact that the Bengals once again at the semester break saw a team with great potential slide down a slippery slope because of personnel problems. After their sweet sixteen run of two years ago, this team was in position to improve on that effort. Both last year and this year Buffalo State played some great basketball over the holidays and gave themselves a chance for a nice season. I really feel for senior Jake Simmons who deserved more  and is now running out of chances. I hope they get some good news in the near future and can turn things around.

Geneseo 77 Fredonia 64

My score of 82-61 was pretty close to the actual finish.  The margin of victory was smaller but my total was only 2 points off the final.

Oswego 80 New Paltz 78

My closest prognostication of the evening as I had Oswego winning  by a 79-75 score. Only 4 points off the real final. That 3 pointer that New Paltz got for their final points of the game was supposed to rim out, as was the front end of Hayden Ward's meaningless 1&1 free throw with 3 seconds left. ;)

7-2 last weekend and 5-0 tonight gives me a 12-2 mark heading into the weekend with 9 more games on tap. Some tough games to pick coming up. I'll really have to polish the crystal ball to get a clear picture of the future. ;)

SUNYAC Standings at the Halfway Mark:

1.   Geneseo       8-2
2.   Cortland       7-2
2.   Plattsburgh   7-2
4.   Oswego        6-3
5.   Brockport     5-5
6.   Buffalo St.    4-5
6.   New Paltz     4-5
8.   Potsdam      3-6
9.   Fredonia      1-8
9.   Oneonta      1-8

The top 4 teams have opened up a little daylight on the rest of the pack. The top 3 teams have opened open a 3 game lead in the loss column on the 5th and 6th place teams which bodes well for them to secure a playoff spot. 9 wins will get you into the playoffs so the top 3 teams could have a less than stellar 2nd half and will still get into the postseason. With the top 2 teams getting a bye this year and then the final four playing at the #1 seed,  after the 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5 games, it's going to be a dogfight down the stretch to see who gets the home court advantage for the tournament. Unlike previous years there will be no upset of the top seed so that someone else might get to host the final four. Tiebreakers may be huge, once again this year. Oswego with losses already to Geneseo and Plattsburgh will have to turn the tables in their 2nd meeting with both those teams. Likewise for Plattsburgh, who has losses to Geneseo and Cortland.  The next 24 days will be interesting.

Bengalsrule

"Momma said there would be days like this" :-[ :'( .  Brockport was a load tonight. Scrappy... run and gun. And tonight it worked against my beloved BENGALS.

No time to mope. Plattsburgh and Potsdam are coming to town this weekend. Gotta  figure out what we did wrong at Plattsburgh/Potsdam and not repeat those same mistakes. 4 of 5 Yac loses have been on the road so far. Hopefully we can return the favor when Plattsburgh, Oswego, Cortland and Brockport come to the 716!

4 -5 at the midway point and tied with New Paltz for 6th (BENGALS own the tiebreaker). Got to get better. This team is better than what they have showed so far. They will get better...You can bet on it! ;)

Go BENGALS!!!!

Well I am making a 5:30 drive to be there for that and other sporting event (which is why I am in town)... so why are you slacking at not driving 4? :)

Well... too bad I will miss you. No guarantees where I will be sitting... depends on what I want to take in - plus try and take some pictures.

My Plattsburgh State Cardinals are taking on Fredonia State at 4 PM and I will be sitting in front of my computer, hoping that the video feed is a decent quality broadcast. Plus I've made that trip to Oswego a number of times back in my college days. The last time was in January of 1970 and a blizzard was whipping off the Lake something fierce that day. I pulled into the parking lot on campus, opened my door and the wind blew it so hard it broke the hinges and sprung the door. I've never been back. ;D Weather forecast for the North Country this weekend is cold, cold, and colder. Bundle up!!

Being a native of Chicago and New England... I am ready for it :) I used to walk a paper route in rural Maine in the middle of winter... never asked for a ride from my parents until the temperature dipped to -20 :).

I did the same thing in rural Northern New York for 6 years. Wasn't it fun? We had afternoon delivery of our newspaper. Got out of school at 3:15, the papers would arrive from Watertown around 3:30. Used to have to run like heck during basketball season as practice started at 5 PM and if you were late the coach made you sit and watch. I had to cover those 4+ miles in a hurry. Had strong legs and great lungs back then. ;D

I had early morning delivery meaning it was FAR colder... with a Saturday paper for the weekend. I usually was out at 5 AM for my route of 100+ papers during the week and then 8 or 9 AM for the Saturday paper.

I remember the day I came down on a Saturday morning which was very sunny and my dad asked me if I was ready to go... I asked why... he said he had the car running... I seemed perplexed... he told me to check the temp - -40! My usual outfit was two pairs of sweatpants and snow pants, two sweatshirts and a very heavy winter jacket that had a hood that would button up past my nose. I wore a hat underneath as well... I was very warm in that any my multiple layers of socks and boots. But -40 was going to have me easily taking the ride around my route instead of the walk (or bike, if the roads were at least plowed). NUTS!

Ah..the good old days! ;D The weather forecast here in Plattsburgh is for a minus 15 to 18 tonight but the good news for you is that the North Country is supposed to warm up to around 15 degrees by Saturday during the day and only drop to 0 overnight. A piece of cake for a a Maine lad. ??? Have fun in Oswego. Remember my prediction, Cortland 75 Oswego 72.  I just missed with Oswego's game last night. I had them winning over New Paltz  79-75 and the actual was Oswego 80-78.
