Plattsburgh ends regulation on a 17-2 run to tie the game at 84 and force overtime.

Potsdam hits a 3 pointer at the buzzer in regulation to tie it at 79 and force overtime at Fredonia.

Brockport defeats Oneonta 83-73.

Fredonia's Robert Lyles goes coast to coast with 10 seconds left to score with 1 second left as the Blue Devils defeat Potsdam 87-86 in overtime. Tough loss for the Bears as Curtis Pierce had made 1 of 2 free throws to give the Bears the lead before the final possession.

Buffalo State hangs on to defeat Plattsburgh State in overtime 93-89. Cards were atrocious from the foul line as they only made 20 of 38 attempts. Gotta hand it to the Bengals they wanted this game more than the Cardinals did. Plattsburgh had entirely too many turnovers in the overtime period and most importantly 4 turnovers in a row before they scored a point in the extra frame, allowing the Bengals to go on top 90-84 with 2:06 left in the game. Down by 6 at 93-87 they went 1 of 2 on consecutive trips to the line, missing the opportunity to get it to a single possession game. A steal and missed layup by Plattsburgh wasted another chance with 10 seconds left and the only reason the margin wasn't larger was the Bengals missed their last 4 attempts from the line.

Bengals' Jake Simmons shared scoring honors with Plattsburgh's Shamoy McIntosh as they both had 24 points. Simmons was instrumental in the Bengals win as he scored 12 straight points on 2 jumpers and 4 consectutive drives to extend the Bengals  lead from 70-63 to 82-67. Even those heroics almost weren't enough as the Cardinals fought back to tie it and send it to overtime. McIntosh kept Plattsburgh in the game as he had one timely basket after another and went 5 for 5 from 3 point land.

Buffalo State had 5 players hit double figures led by Simmons' 24. Simmons added 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals to his stat line. Rod Epps had 19 points 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Brad Doyley had 15 points, 6 assists and 2 steals. Ryan Carney led the Bengals with 13 rebounds and completed a double-double with 11 points. Freshman Leon Moise was a perfect 5x5 from the field to total 10 points. Seth Runge had a block party tonight with 6 blocks, 6 rebounds and 4 points. Chris Castren filled up the stat sheet with 6 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block. Bengals shot 36x68 from the field (52.9%), only 3x12 from long range (25%), and 18x29 from the line (62.1%). They won the battle of the boards 54-46, but had 34 turnovers to 23 for Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh also placed 5 players in double figures. In addition to McIntosh with his 24, the Cards got 13 points and 5 rebounds from Jordan Moody. John Perez just missed a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 9 rebounds with 3 steals. Point guard Chris Manning had 10 points, 7 assists, 9 steals (the 2nd time in a week that he's had 9) and 4 rebounds. Ezra Hodgson added 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Plattsburgh only shot  30x85 (35.3%) from the field,  9x29 from downtown (31.0%) and a pathetic 20x38 from the foul line (52.6%).  Cardinals had their moments in this game. One came early in the contest. But blowing a 17 point lead was way too costly and allowing the Bengals to go into the break with the lead sure was a momentum changer. Then to come all the way back from their own 15 point deficit with only 6:18 left in the game was a tribute to their never quit attitude but perhaps they were gassed from that effort which carried over into the overtime period. The Queen City jinx is alive and well as Plattsburgh hasn't won in Buffalo in the past 5 years.

Buffalo State gets to take on Potsdam tomorrow and the Bears will need to shake off a demoralizing overtime loss to last place Fredonia on a last second basket by the Blue Devils. Buffalo State improves to 5-5 in conference play (10-6 overall) and now has sole possession of the 6th and final playoff spot.

Plattsburgh will travel to Fredonia as they need to put this loss behind them and make sure the weekend trip isn't a total loss. The Cardinals fall to 7-3 in the YAC (11-6 overall) and into 3rd place.

I have to congratulate the Bengals on their big win tonight. It looked like Plattsburgh was going to blow them right out of the Sports Arena after the first 8 minutes of the game. Coach Ansari did a great job getting his team to weather the storm and getting them back into the flow. And to do it ALL by halftime was even more impressive. Usually as a coach you're happy just to get a 17 point deficit back to single digits. To have the lead 12 minutes later was not something you see that often. Kudos to the players and the coaches. Hopefully we'll meet a third time down the road. I was hoping it might be here in Plattsburgh but with our loss tonight we'll have our work cut out for us. Of course we could run the table. (Not likely, but not impossible either) At any rate, I wish the Bengals luck and hope you have some good news concerning a certain missing person. After all, I now need you to take down, in order, Oswego, Cortland and Geneseo on the last day of the regular season and you'll need him to do so ;D ;)

Some interesting results last night in New York State hoops action that will have an effect on the Regional Rankings.

Ithaca defeated #20 Stevens 80-69 as the Bombers have taken sole possession of 1st place on the Empire 8. Stevens, looking so good just a week ago has now suffered back to back losses in League play.

Hartwick who defeated Stevens on Tuesday gets trounced by lowly Elmira 88-62. I remember commenting way back on November 15th when the Soaring Eagles played Cortland and only lost to the Red Dragons 63-60 that they were an improved team and would pull off some upsets.

Nazareth loses an 80-76 contest to even more lowly Alfred. This loss is made more surprising because it came in Rochester and not Mayberry. The Golden Flyers were 11-4 (4-1 in the E8) just 8 days ago. They have now lost 4 games in a row and sit in a 4th place tie with Utica College with a 4-5 record.

NYU drops their 3rd straight conference game as they lose at Rochester 65-50. Violets now only 2-4 in the UAA and fall into a 3 way tie for 5th place.

The top 3 in the Liberty League all won last night:

Hobart beat Bard 62-45

Skidmore defeated RPI 81-74 as the Thoroughbreds won their 6th game in a row.

Union got by SLU 83-62.

No rankings implications but RIT finally broke into the win column in the Liberty League as they beat Vassar 62-53

Cortland State could be the big beneficiary of Stevens back to back losses. If the Red Dragons beat Oswego tonight, not only will it probably be another win against a regionally ranked opponent (I have to believe Oswego is in the top 6 right now) but could boost them into 2nd place behind Rochester when the rankings do come out. They just need to stay clean to hold that postion. That would pretty much guarantee them an at large bid should they not win the SUNYAC tournament. Ithaca will also benefit and step up in the rankings.

All 10 teams in action today with 4 games at 4 PM and 1 at 8 PM.  Short on time so these will be quick.

Potsdam State at Buffalo State   4 PM

Hard not to like the Bengals in this matchup. Both teams coming off overtime games last night. Bengals were winners, Bears took the tough loss. Point spread favors the Bengals by 7 points. Teams had a barnburner in Potsdam earlier with the Bengals winning 85-84. I don't think this one will be that close. Bengals win 90-77

Oneonta State at Geneseo State  4 PM

Today's matchup pits the top against the bottom. Geneseo handled New Paltz yesterday while Oneonta couldn't stay with Brockport. More of the same today. Blue Knights favored by 18 points. I think it will be closer but still a comfortable Geneseo win. Something like
76-63.

New Paltz State at Brockport State  4 PM

Two teams that will be battling till the end for a playoff spot. Brockport with the upper hand at present looking to: A. increase their lead over the Hawks and...B. revenge an earlier loss in Hawk Center back in December. Pointspread has them favored 9 but it should be closer. I'll go with the Golden Eagles  88-81.

Plattsburgh State at Fredonia State  4 PM

Cardinals need to put last night behind them in a hurry. Fredonia riding high after their overtime win last night against Potsdam. Plattsburgh always has problems playing in Fredonia. Cardinals lead this series 9-5 over the past 6 years but have lost in Fredonia 3 of the past 4 trips there. Plattsburgh needs a win here to stay in touch with the leaders if they have any hope of getting the top seed. Oddsmakers have made the Cards a 7 point favorite and i think they'll cover that spread. I see the final as a 77-67 Cardinal win.

Cortland State at Oswego State 8 PM

Oswego has owned the Red Dragons over the past 6 years, racking up a 10-2 record against them. Cortland's 2 wins came at home in 2010 and in the playoffs in 2008 at Brockport. So it's been slim pickings for the Red Dragons in the confines of Max Ziel Gym. Oswego swept Cortland last year going 3-0 as they won twice in the regular season and in the championship game of the YAC tournament. Even though we're at the halfway point of the conference season Oswego is the only team Cortland has yet to play due to the unbalanced schedule of the SUNYAC this year. Cortland needs a win here to keep pace with Geneseo as the Blue Knights will most likely improve to 10-2 after today. Oswego needs a win to keep alive any hopes of winning the regular season. The oddsmakers have made Cortland a slim 3 point favorite. I think this just might be the year that the Red Dragons get that win in Laker Hall. Revenge is surely on their minds after their failed attempts of last year. No Chad Burridge, and a shorter Laker bench make me think that the Red Dragons are the stronger team this time around. I already told Dave 'd-mac' McHugh that the final would be Cortland 75 Oswego 72. I'm sticking with that. I wouldn't mind being wrong, as a Cortland loss would help my Cards more than an Oswego loss would, but I gotta call em as my crystal ball tells me to. :D
