Jake Simmons now has 1920 points and it would appear that he will crack the 2000 point barrier by the time his career is over at Buffalo State. Hard to say where Jake ranks in total points scored since the SUNYAC records are so hard to follow. I did some research and Scott Fitch totaled 2634 points for his career. It wouldn't surprise me if Jake ends up in 2nd place. I don't know how many players from the YAC have scored 2000 points for their career. I'm sure it can't be more than a couple but Jake and Fitch might be the only two that have accomplished this feat.

Steve Babiarz scored 2,089 points in four years at Potsdam, but only started for three of them.
He was 8th man on the 1985-86 undefeated national Championship team, and didn't play on a losing team in college until his 61st game.  He went to the NCAA's all four years, and played in 122 games.  His senior year in 1988-89, he averaged 25.1 ppg (754 points in 30 games).

Correction, my quote not my friend from Buffalo. Thanks for the info on Babiarz. I was on the phone with Bengalsrule earlier today and I mention Babiarz as a possiblity. I spoke with Steve after his Potsdam career was over, when he was in Plattsburgh for a PBA tournament, and I thought, when we were discussing his Potsdam days, he told me he had over 2000 points. That was a number of years ago, however, and the memory gets a little fuzzy over time. I was hoping you would come on and clarify that for me. Thanks bear.  However in checking with the NCAA statistics filed by Potsdam it shows Babiarz with 2009 points not 2089. The breakdown on the NCAA sheets that Jerry turned in shows Babiarz with 172 his freshman year, 479 his sophomore year, 643 his junior year and 715 his senior year. Perhaps there's a mistake somewhere along the line. And your statement of not playing on a losing team until his 61st game... means he didn't play in a losing game until his 61st contest because of the Bears huge win streak. He never played on a losing team. ;D  Can you think of any other Potsdam players (or any other SUNYAC players) that broke the 2000 point mark? I know Derrick Rowland had 1770 for his last 3 years but he didn't show up with a total for his freshman year on the final stat sheet that Jerry turned in. He would have needed to score 230 points as a freshman and he would have been listed if he had done that. I'm guessing he had less than 100 points as a frosh. Ed Jachim  had 1554 for his career and Leroy Witherspoon had 1307 for his 4 years. I think Maurice Woods and Brendon Mitchell came up short as well.

Are you back from the California coast? That's probably why it's snowing in the North Country today. ???

thebear

I think there's a few Canadian games included in the stats back in that era, my numbers are from our media guide.  Jerry used to play at least two Canadian teams a year.

Babiarz played his freshman year without the three point line, or his total would have been higher.

Think about what that must have been like, to not have lost in your first 60 games in college.

Rowland only played 3.5 years, he was moved up from the Jayvees midway through his freshman season.  He would have approached 2,000 points had he played four full years.  Again, no three point line, though he went on to be a top three point shooter in the CBA.

Deane only played three years, but scored 1447 points, but he also had points at Hobart where he played his first year.  Deane played his entire career without a three point line, or his totals would have been MUCH higher, other than the pick and roll with Bence, most of his scoring came from the perimeter.

In fact the very same storm that is bringing snow here, came ashore in Southern California last Thursday, and we got wet, flew over it, and are now getting snowed on.  Was glad to escape the North Country cooler last week however.

John Ivy of Brockport State has been selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week ending 1-28. John scored 74 points in 3 games last week and reached the 1000 point mark when he scored 32 against New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. For the week he was 29x57 from the field (50.8%), 9x20 from long distance (45%) and 7x8 from the line (87.5%). He totaled 12 rebounds, 7 assists and 9 steals as well.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

John Ivy, Brockport
Rochester, NY / East

John Ivy scored a career-high 32 points in a win over New Paltz to reach the 1,000 point career milestone. Ivy entered the game needing 31 points. He becomes the 22nd player in Brockport history to join the 1,000 point club. Ivy averaged 24.7 points during a three-game winning streak while shooting 50.9 percent. He also averaged three steals per game, including a career-high five against Oneonta

Here's my honorable mention Players of the Week:

Jake Simmons could just have easily been selected for the 3rd time in 5 weeks as he carried the load in a 2-1 week for Buffalo State.
After a loss at Brockport mid-week it was imperative that the Bengals pick up 2 badly needed wins on a weekend home stand. Simmons didn't disappoint as he tallied 24 points against Plattsburgh on Friday as Buffalo State won in overtime against the Cardinals. He scored 30 points the next day against Potsdam as the Bengals opened up a 2 game lead for the final playoff spot. For the 3 games Jake scored 76 points as he shot 28x44 from the field (63.6%), 8x13 from the arc (61.5%) and 12x14 from the line (85.7%). He added 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists.

Zach Mager from Oneonta had a 3 game stretch that would ordinarily be a hands down Player of the Week selection. I saw him play 10 days ago in Plattsburgh and was impressed with his game. Only a sophomore he should merit some consideration for the All Conference awards at the end of the year. He's scored in double figures in 16 of 17 games played and is presently averaging 18.6 ppg and 7.2 rpg. Not bad for a 6'2" guard. This past week he scored 70 points for a 23.3 ppg average. He shot 21x33 from the field (63.6%), 6x8 from downtown (75%) and 22x26 from the line (84.6%). He grabbed 19 rebounds, had 3 assists and 2 steals. With the averages he's put up this year he'd probably be a first team selection if Oneonta was having a good year. Because they'll finish at or near the bottom of the standings he'll probably be a third team selection or get overlooked completely.

Matt Devine of New Paltz had three excellent games as well but unfortunately the Hawks dropped all three. Devine scored 71 points in those games. He shot 19x40 from the field (47.5%), 6x13 from the 3 point line (46.1%) and 27x30 from the line (90.0%). He totaled 19 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

John Perez from Plattsburgh helped lead the Cardinals to a 2-1 week as they solidified their drive toward the playoffs. Perez didn't get as many minutes as the other players on this list as the Cardinals won a pair of lopsided games and the coaching staff gave the bench players ample minutes. Perez filled up the stat sheet while he was on the court however. He scored 40 points as he was 15x28 from the field (53.5%) and 10x16 from the line (62.5%). He grabbed 23 rebounds had 9 steals and 3 assists.

Congratulation to these five players as you've made the magicman's Team of the Week. ;D

Here come the Golden Eagles now down 62-61 with 51 seconds to go.

3 straight turnovers. First by Cortland's Jeremy Smith, then Port's Bobby Bell returns the favor and turns it over, followed by another turnover by Dragons Jesse Winter. Port takes a time out with 14 seconds left and then promptly turns it over. John Ivy's turn. Now Cortland with the ball and 8 seconds left  with a timeout. Port has to foul twice to send Cortland's Lamard Herron to the line. He makes them both with 6 seconds on the clock and now a 3 point Cortland lead. Cortland time out. Port's Caruthers nails a 3 at the buzzer and we're headed to overtime.

Oswego topples Geneseo 70-50.

Oswego 70 Geneseo 50

Lakers get double figures from 4 players led by Daniel Ross with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Hayden Ward with 15 points and 7 boards as well. Chris Gilkes with 13 points and a team high of 8 rebounds with Kyle Covley adding 11. Oswego down by 5 in a back and forth 1st half score the final 8 points of the period to go into the locker room up 27-24. Lakers stretch their lead to 8 at 38-30 but Blue Knights close to within 4 on several occcasions. Up 43-38, the Lakers would deliver the knockout with an 18-2 run that would leave no doubt about the outcome.

Geneseo got 13 points from Jordan Jones to lead the Blue Knights. Connor Fedge had 12 points and 5 rebounds.

*Correction Live stats last night had Ross with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Box score and press release show him with only 10 points.

Cortland 85, Brockport 75 ........final in OT. Simply a tremendous effort by the Port!!  Consider this: Corts shoot 51 percent (26x51)from the field, make 9 of 21 triples, hold 48-26 rebounding margin ..........Some very lackadaisical RDragons play over the second half, and some mighty Golden Eagles drive. CSt with 21 turnovers to 10 for its gritty guest, whose B. Caruthers is marveeeeelous. And J. Ivy has 15 second half points. As we previously indicated, it was 41-22 a minute into the second half.

Bport held only its second lead of the game (Eagles were up three minutes into the match) at 66-65 to start OT. K. McMahon ties it from the stripe for Cortland and J. Smith nails a trey at 3:55 for a 69-66. It was basically the J. Winter free throw show from there. He makes a bunch the rest of the way and finishes 13x16 from the line. Four throws hikes the lead to seven. Port draws within 77-71 on D. Klein's three ball at 0:42, but Smith FTs extends the lead.

Winter was very much under wraps -- Caruthers a major shadow, but still counted 19 pts with 8 assts. H. Hefele with 18 pts, 8 rebs, 4 assts; K. McMahon 16 pts and 15 rebs; Smith 14 pts. L. Herron a big contributor as well, his two FTs near the end of reg necessitating Caruthers desperation heave under heavy guard from the top of the key that sent the game to extra minutes. RDragons 24x33 free throwing

Ivy finished with 27 pts(8x18fg, 5x9 3s) and 8 rebs. Caruthers with 24 pts(10x19fg, 3x5 3s). Port 28x69fg, 12x35 3s, 7x12ft

I think you mean the 607 as that's where the new first place team resides. Cardinals still have a chance to change those numbers to 518, but may need a little help.

Massey had the YAC at 15th on Tuesday morning...we dropped a spot.

I stated several days ago that I thought Geneseo would get overtaken for the top spot. Red Dragons and Lakers wasted no time making that a reality last night as Cortland now moves into 1st place.

Bengalsrule

Well 607 (Cortland ) is "close"r to the 315 (Oswego) 8-)
