Very Surprised about Buffalo State 2 losses to under 500 teams. Buff State has to win there final two games to get the 6th seed in The SUNYAC tourny. I have seen New Paltz play 3 times this year and havent looked good at all. Taylor and Devine are both good, no supporting cast though. since New Paltz and Buff State split season series what is the tiebreaker? The only clear cut team in this league is Cortland. I change my mind about Plattsburgh. MAGICMAN i think they are the 2nd or 3rd best team in the SUNYAC. since the beat Oswego and blew out Geneseo. I have to put them in 2nd behind Cortland.

Not positive, but should teams remain deadlocked after head-to-head tie-breaker, don't they then go to results against the top teams? In this instance at the moment Cortland heads the pack. New Paltz holds a win over the Corts while Buff St. was swept by them. NP advances. If outcomes were the same vs. Cortland, results vs. second place team would be considered, etc. Think things were settled this way at one time. Still? Know F. Elia knows for sure.  You there Fran?

That's still he way that the tiebreakers work. Start with the results against the top team and work down the list until you have a winner.

thebear

dex, think you're right on.  If two teams are tied, and they split the season series, then they go to record vs. 1,2,...until someone has an advantage.

Three Way tie break is even messier, as it goes to best two records amongst the three, then 1,2,...

Can have some awkward results.

Bengals have to win out, and hope that Hawks don't repeat their win against Cortland.  Of course Bengals have to face two teams that have already beaten them, who are still working on seeding positions.

Bengals loss to the 'port would be very damaging.

So, I was looking at the regional rankings and the Massey ratings and I was curious about how that all shook out, as the Massey ratings have some teams higher than others, while the regional rankings don't reflect that same lineup. I'm assuming it's because the ratings are through this weekend's games and the rankings came out before that.

EAST
1   Rochester (N.Y.)   18-1   19-1
2   SUNY Cortland   17-2   17-3
3   Stevens Institute of Technology   15-3   17-3
4   New York University   13-7   13-7
5   Hobart   12-6   13-6
6   SUNY Geneseo   14-6   14-7

Now, U of R is 20-2, having gone 1-1 since the rankings came out. Of course, the loss is out of region, against Wash U today, and the win is out of region as well, correct?
Cortland is 19-3, two wins in region
Stevens is 20-3, with their three wins all in region
NYU is 13-9, both of their losses were out of region, right?
Hobart is 16-6, their three wins are in region
Geneseo is 14-9, and both of their losses were in region.

Now, according to the latest Massey ratings, through Feb. 9, the top 10 teams in East, I believe (don't shoot me if I'm wrong, I don't usually try to figure such things out, but I was curious so I gave it a shot. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, though) are:

1) U of R (Massey rating 6, sure to drop with today's loss by 19)
2) Cortland (21)
3) Stevens (48)
4) Hobart (60)
5) Union (74)
6) NYU (75)
7) Plattsburgh (78)
8) Oswego (87)
9) Ithaca (103)
10) Brockport (107)

Geneseo, which was sixth in the regional rankings, was 12th in the East in the Massey ratings at 128, behind Buffalo State which was rated 122nd.

I'm assuming the next regional rankings will have the same top 5, though, since U of R and NYU's games were out of region, right? And my other question is who the 6th team will be in the next rankings? I mean, according to Massey, it would be Union, but since their schedule strength is low, wouldn't Plattsburgh or Oswego seem more likely to get into the top 6?

Again, just curious how this is all shaking out. I appreciate the enlightenment from the much more informed board members.

buck,
Note the reponse I've bolded in your post.

Regarding the Massey rankings... last week when the Massey rankings came out on Monday which included games through Sunday Feb. 3rd (the same time frame that the regional committees use) the top 6 east  teams in his rankings ended up being the same 6 as the regional committee had on Wednesday. I also believe Massey's rankings will change tomorrow so they wil be a bit different than the ones you posted.

Here is a message I sent to Mr. dcahill earlier tonight as he asked me who I thought would be ranked this week:

Probably the only team that drops out is Geneseo. Plattsburgh should enter the rankings and I think they'll be in 5th place. I think this is what they'll look like.

1.  Rochester     They will still probably be in the top spot even though they were 1-1 for the week.  They have a stronger SOS than Cortland but the Red Dragons could jump over them though and it wouldn't surprise me.

2.   Cortland    A 2-0 week keeps them near or at the top.

3.   Stevens    They were 3-0 including a beatdown of Ithaca so they won't move at all.

4.   Hobart      Also went 3-0 beating the 2 cellar dwellers in the LL but also topping Union in double OT.  They won't move up but Plattsburgh I think is a better team.

5.   Plattsburgh State     A 2-0 week including the win over, then 2nd place in the SUNYAC, Geneseo by 22 points. The 10 point win over Brockport was a solid one as well. The Geneseo win also counts as a win over a regionally ranked opponent which always helps. Plattsburgh now has a 2 game lead in the loss column over Geneseo and a full 2 game lead over Oswego. Plattsburgh is the only team with an outside chance of catching Cortland.

6.   NYU      This spot could go to another team as the Violets had a bad week. Going 0-2 and with a loss to the last place team in the UAA, that won't help their cause. Of the teams that were just outside the rankings last week only Plattsburgh went undefeated. Oswego and Ithaca were ahead of Union I believe,  but they all lost a game last week. Hard to say what the committee will do with that final spot. If they don't give it to NYU it'll probably go to Union since their loss was to Hobart on the road in double OT. I hope not because they don't deserve to be ranked.

So that's my guess when they come out on Wednesday. I was perfect last week with my guesses but the 6th place spot this week is really up for grabs. Actually no one deserves it as none of the contenders have been playing that well. I don't think it really matters because whoever is in 6th place doesn't have a chance of getting a Pool C at large bid. When they are at the table with the teams from the other regions, they won't measure up, if they even get to the table. ;D

Didn't get a chance to write up the Plattsburgh-Geneseo game as I was fighting a nasty tooth infection Saturday prior to and during the game. Finally heard from my Dentist around 5 PM in response to a message I left about 2 PM. Got some emergency medication from him right after the game, took the meds, and crashed hoping the pain would go away. Been kinda of in a recovery mode today. Still painful but a lot less than yesterday. Appointment 1st thing in the morning. Bring lots of money.

Plattsburgh 84 Geneseo 62

Certainly didn't foresee this score as the outcome of the game. Cards got on the board first and never let the Blue Knights gain the lead the entire game. They did manage to tie Plattsburgh at 2, 6, and 10, but from that point forward they trailed the rest of the way. A layup by the Cards' John Perez and back to back 3's by Ezra Hodgson gave Plattsburgh a 22-16 lead. Geneseo woud get a bucket and 1 from Connor Fedge followed by a layup from Ryan Riefenhauser to pull within a point at 22-21 but never again would they get it within a single possession. Reggie Williams came off the Cards bench, skyed high for a rebound and slammed it down while getting fouled on the play. He made the free throw and another Cardinal reserve Ed Correa scored his 2nd field goal in a 3 minute span with a 3 pointer. After a Geneseo miss Kalik Parker another of Plattsburgh's 2nd line tipped in a missed field goal and when Shavar Fields made 1x2 from the line the Cards had built a double digit lead of 31-21 in just under 3 minutes of play. With 6:31 left in the half Geneseo scored 5 unanswered points to get it back to a 2 possession game. At that point Parker buried a three, Perez scored on a layup, Chris Manning got four straight points  and Hodgson drilled another one from downtown. The 12-2 run left Geneseo down 43-28. A nicely executed out of bounds play by the Blue Knights with six tenths of a second left by Riefenhauser made it 43-30 at the break.

Geneseo came out of the break and brought in Andy Drescher at the 18:47 mark. Still down 14 points, 46-32 at the time, Drescher led a Blue Knights charge, that brought them back to a 2 possession game at 51-45. He hit 3 trifectas in quick order to give Geneseo some hope, but the Cardinals' Coach Curle countered that move by inserting Kalik Parker, and Ed Correa back into the game. The teams traded baskets to make it 53-47 but Plattsburgh would let loose with a barrage of 3 pointers by the two subs to fuel a 19-0 run and put the game away. First Parker hit a 3, and after a Geneseo miss he hit another 3. John Perez then stole the ball and Correa nailed a trey. Chris Manning then had a steal (he had 5 in the game), was fouled and made 1x2. Plattsburgh's Reggie Williams rebounded the missed free throw and laid it in. Geneseo missed a 3 point attempt of their own and Parker came down and hit his 4th 3 of the night. Manning then stole the ball on consectutive Geneseo possessions scoring a layup on one and feeding Correa for a layup on the second steal. It took the Cardinals 3:43 to score those 19 points and turn this game into a one sided contest. The coach started bringing in the subs with 4:30 left in the game and the Blue Knights never got any closer than 16 points.

Plattsburgh didn't have a single player from their starting five score in double digits. The starters scored 40 points and the bench scored 44. Kalik Parker was the team's leader with 14 points (5x12 fg, 4x10 3's, 0x1 ft), 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 21 min. Ed Correa also had double figures off the bench with 10 points (4x10 fg, 2x7 3's) in 14 min.  Reggie Williams had 18 minutes off the bench and scored 7 points with a team leading 9 rebounds plus 2 blocks. His rebounds and points came at crucial times in the game and he's been performing at his best level all year in the past 3 games. Shavar Fields had 7 points and 5 rebounds in 11 minutes of floor time.

The starters were led by Chris Manning as the point guard, as ususal, did a little bit of everything. He had 7 points, 10 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds in 27 min. Ezra Hodgson had 9 points hitting 3x4 from downtown with 16 min. of play. Shamoy McIntosh also had 9 points going 3x4 from the field, with 3 steals and 2 assists in 13 minutes. Jordan Moody scored 9 points (4x8 fg) with 4 steals and 2 assists in 19 min.  John Perez had 6 points (3x6 fg) , 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists in 26 min.  10 players had double digit minutes. The Cardinals shot 31x65 from the field (47.7%), 10x27 from beyond the arc (37%) and 12x18 from the line (66.7%). The Cards won the battle of the boards by a healthy margin 43-26 and had 16 turnovers to 20 for the Blue Knights. Plattsburgh scored 36 points off those 20 turnovers and had 28 2nd chance points to only 7 for the Knights.

Gordon Lyons led 3 Blue Knight players in double figures with 14 points (6x9 fg, 2x4 ft) and a team high 6 rebounds. Ryan Riefenhauser had 13 points (6x7 fg, 1x2 ft), with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. James McKenna had 11 points (4x9 fg, 1x3 3's, 2x2 ft), 4 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Connor Fedge had 8 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Andy Drescher with 3 triples scored 9 points in 9 min. off the bench. Geneseo only got 12 points from their bench. Geneseo was a bit shorthanded as one of their starters Thomas Decker has missed the last 3 games. Geneseo shot 25x51 from the field (49%) but only 4x14 from longe range (28.6%). They were 8x13 from the line (61.5%).

Plattsburgh improves to 11-4 in the YAC (15-7 overall) and has 3 games left all at home. The only way the Cardinals can overtake Cortland is if they win those 3 home games against Potsdam, Cortland and Oswego. They would then need New Paltz to beat Cortland and finish ahead of Buffalo State. Then we would tie the Red Dragons with 4 losses each and we would win the tiebreaker. Cortland and Plattsburgh would have identical records against Geneseo, Oswego and Brockport so New Paltz or Buff State will be the tiebreaking team should that above scenario happen. We lose if it's Buff State and we win if it's New Paltz providing the Hawks win in Cortland on Feb 12th. I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen. We will take on our North Country neighbor, Potsdam,  on Tuesday at 8:00 PM. The Bears are back at full strength so I expect it will be a tough game.

Geneseo is now 10-6 in the conference ( 14-9 overall) and has 2 games left starting with a trip to Fredonia on Friday the 15th and then they host Buffalo State on Sat the 16th. They remain in 3rd place a half game ahead of the Lakers.

Bengals loss to the 'port would be very damaging.

A BENGALS loss to ANYONE would be VERY damaging! IF I've ever cheered for Cortland (who's playing N.Paltz at home) I'm cheering for them tommorrow. Bottom line is we had an opportunity to all but lock down a playoff spot with 2 victories this past weekend and we crapped the bed. No excuses...just stank the place up!

Oh BTW Hawkbill... Jake actually surpassed the 2,000 point mark Saturday at Oneonta. Very classy organization at Oneonta. They were aware of the fact that he was 4 points away and discussed with the BENGAL coaches how best, and when, to honor him once he passed the 2K mark. They did it at the beginning of the 2nd half. Called him to center court with Coach Ansari, took pictures, and gave him  the game ball after the Game!!!!

+1 for the Oneonta S.I.D....Class act on an otherwise miserable f..kin day!! >:(

Four games scheduled for tonight, all at 8 PM.

Still not feeling well may have to skip the game tonight.  Tooth problem much better but developed bronchitis. Hacking up a storm with a fever. Doctor's in the AM.

Only tme for quick picks

Feb. 12

New Paltz State at Cortland State       8:00 PM
Revenge for the Red Dragons. 89-75.

Oneonta State at Oswego State    8:00 PM
Oswego will not  suffer another letdown here. They win big 76-59

Buffalo State at Fredonia State     8:00 PM
Can the Bengals finally win a road game in 2013? They better or they are history. Only won by 2 in Buffalo, yet favored today by 5. Bengals win 83-75.

Potsdam State at  Plattsburgh State     8:00 PM
Plattsburgh broke open a close game in the 2nd half of their meeting in Potsdam and won going away. Bears with a full complement of players this time around.  Point spread favors the Cards by 14. Should be closer but still see the Cards on top, 85-76.

Zach Mager from Oneonta makes the D3hoops Team of the Week. here's the write up:

Zach Mager
"Mager put up 23.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game in a 2-1 week for the Red Dragons. He shot 58 percent from the floor and 8-for-15 from beyond the arc."

Zach was also the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week ending 2-10 Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

"Zach Mager led Oneonta to a 2-1 record for the week with three 20 plus point performances. Mager scored 26 points and grabbed nine boards, as Oneonta avenged an early season loss to Fredonia. Against Buffalo State, Mager recorded a double-double in leading the Red Dragons to a 72-67 win over the Bengals."

Congratulations to Zach for this double honor.

Cortland by 30 over New Paltz with 15 minutes to play

hawkball

Well - tough to prove your opponents wrong when you're shooting 26.9% and 27.1% from the 3. Man - would have loved for the 'OTHER' NP team to show up tonight - but looks like no matter how much I wanted to prove dcahill wrong - Hawks are playing like crap again tonight (15 TOs to 5!).

Knew Cortland was going to be out for blood tonight - but come one guys - you've got to play defense! You've got to protect the ball! The wins this weekend were great - but it's so frustrating to have the guys come out and blow it.

Sorry Bengals - hoping Fredonia can pull off the upset - but I don't think it will happen - Buff is too fast and too athletic.

And PS - Dcahill - I know the Hawks have been up and down this season - but no supporting cast is not very accurate. See Taylor Sowah, Andrew Joseph and Kevin Roach. Nevermind frosh Deveino McCrae had 16 rebs over Buff the other night. No other team in the YAC is getting the production out of its frosh class like the Hawks... unfortunately - you seem to have only seen NP at its weakest (vs. Naz? Geneseo/Brockport?)

Feel better Magic.
