We recall (maybe) that during Coach Span's senior playing season of '82-83 the Corey slate may have been clean.

Congrats to Dragons, nice to see 2 'yacs in round of 32, albeit with tough draws at the next level.

I'll check the books, but in '82-83 Bears won the 'yac title, and the East Regionals, then lost by a point at eventual champion Scranton in the Elite 8.  Fine squad with folks like Leroy Witherspoon, (2 x DIII Player of the Year), Pony Bullock etc.  Perhaps dragons beat bears at the "Pete", but lost at least two possibly  three other matches (@Potsdam, SUNYACS, possibly REGIONALS).

During the 1982-83  season when Coach Spanbauer was a senior, Cortland was a perfect 11-0 at home. They beat the Bears in Cortland that year 72-66. Their closest home games were a 92-91 win over Ithaca, a 70-68 win over Plattsburgh, a 96-93 win over SUNY Buffalo, a 79-75 win over Albany, and a 77-73 win over Oneonta. Their other home victories were wins over Elmira, Binghamton, Brockport, Rochester, and Binghamton a 2nd time. They ended the year with a 15-7 overall record as they were 4-7 on the road.

Incidentally Coach Spanbauer scored 405 points that year to lead the team and had an 18.4 ppg scoring average. He was 161x274 from the field (60.9%) and 83x95 from the line (87.3%). Not too shabby!!! 8-) I guess now we know why Cortland still has all those sharpshooters. ;D

A tip of the hat to Jeremy Smith from Cortland who is on my Fantasy team in the D3 hoops NCAA Tournament Fantasy League. Jeremy had 25 fantasy points for my team tonight.

Chris Manning also gets a shout out as he is on Mrs. Magicman's Fantasy team. Chris had 22 fantasy points tonight

Yesssssss!!! That's for my longterm memory. Thanks, Bear, for your quick look back. We had been meaning to do that as the current team's home streak continued. Will await Fran's check on the other recent strong CSt teams' play at home. But wouldn't that be something  -- to have Coach Span's senior-laden crew be the only OTHER home unbeaten in school history. Span was some kind of player, a gym rat and one of the fiercest competitors we have known. A lefty, he virtually made that '82-83 team what it was. And those were pre-three point days. Otherwise his figures would have been even more impressive.

Middlebury is hosting the NCAA skiing championships.  It is my understanding that they did not put in a bid to host next weekend.

I guess I'm chopped liver??  I tell you I don't get no respect, no respect at all.

It appears your longterm memory is still pretty good! 8-)   I'm kinda wondering about that short term part though!! ???

As Dave McHugh has told us Cortland gets to host the game against Middlebury. Rochester has also been chosen to host against Ithaca, which was no surprise since the Ithaca gym is undergoing renovations.

East region teams went 5-1 in the tournament yesterday with only Hobart losing in overtime to Rhode Island.

Next Saturday's schedule

Plattsburgh State @ Amherst      Time TBA

Middlebury @  Cortland State      Tme TBA

Ithaca @ Rochester                      Time TBA

Morrisville State @ Rhode Island    7:00 PM

OMG!!! No, no and no .....never we say. You north country guys deserve better, and you're obviously joined at the hip. Bear first jumped on my query and upon my morning perusal of the board we came across a response. Lets see .....thebear .....magicman ......never gave it a thought. Magic, accept our mea culpas. Your homework appreciated! Also remember Jeff VanGundy of Bport an all-conference performer in '82-83.

Getting No. 14 a tall order, but nonetheless AT 'THE PETE.' Also believe Cortland begins its spring break next weekend.

All is forgiven my friend, but I couldn'r resist. And of course I know how easy it was to think that  the bear was the one with the reponse to your question.

FYI your long term memory was right as well, concerning the 99-00 Cortland team. They were 13-0 at home but losing their finale in the tournament to Penn State-Behrend 58-52.

And finally I'll go on record early on this one and predict that Cortland will beat Middlebury 78-73.

Well I got my wish about this weekend's games. They are going to be starting at 2 different times so for all those that are interested you'll be able to see both games.

Middlebury at Cortland State   Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM      Hopefully their will be a video feed for this game.  Help me Fran!

Plattsburgh State at Amherst   Saturday evening  at 7:00 PM       Pretty sure Amherst will have a video feed for this game

Edit:  Fran Elia has confirmed to me that there will be a video broadcast of the Cortland-Middlebury game on Saturday. Thanks Fran. 8-)

Magic, Having watched my bears play there in '05, be not impressed with Lefrak.  Certainly not to the standards of Maxcy or "The Pete".

You will love the platform stands at the far end that get the capacity up to NCAA standards. Otherwise, Memorial Hall looks like Rupp Arena.  The lighting leaves much to be desired.

At least this time, you will still have Amherst Students on Campus, in '05, they were on break, Amherst and Fisher (top two seeds) lost the first night, Saturday night twas ugly to be sure.

Unfortunately you will undoubtedly have Western mass refs, who like gentlemanly play, and don't like banging in the paint by the defenders.  In '05 vs. Rochester, Turner and Harris had 4 fouls in 5 minutes.

Since the Cards will be giving up 5-7 inches across the front line, they will have to use quickness and street smarts to overcome the Lord Jeff's.

Hope the weather is good, we drove there in a raging Snowtorm, at least you can take a ferry & superhighway for most of the way.

Since they're playing Amherst, I doubt they will have Western Mass refs at all. They'll have refs who haven't seen either team this year.

Unfortunately in '05 that wasn't the case, Seth Hauben was a road grader, and our guys were getting called for touch fouls 20' from the hoop.

Refs were from Springfield and Pittsfield, sounds like Western mass to me.  Were assigned before Saturday's games.

Sure. Because two New York teams advanced, Western Mass refs were able to be used. But since Amherst is playing in this game, NCAA rules say local refs should not be used.
