Oneonta up 25-22 over Fredonia at the break but has now moved in front 51-34 with 10:30 left to go.

No stats available for this game either.

Geneseo defeats  #23 Hobart 82-73 to win the 5th place game of the Wendy's Classic. I guess Hobart was slightly over ranked in this week's Top 25 poll.

Plattsburgh and Cortland going down to the wire as the Cardinals lead 59-56 with 2:40 to go.

Three pointer by Lamard Herron with 2:18 left to tie it up

Jumper by Kevin McMahon with 1:18 left  Cortland leads 61-59 time out Plattsburgh.

Mike Mitchell buries his 6th 3 pointer of the game to give the Cards a 62-61 lead with 45 seconds left. Cortland takes a time out. 35 seconds left.

Cortland's Spendjian goes in for the layup and Shamoy McIntosh blocks it. Plattsburgh gets the rebound and Mike Mitchell is fouled. He makes the 1st and Cortland calls a time out.  17 seconds left to play.

Mitchell makes the 2nd to give the Cards a 3 point lead. Cortland comes down, loses the ball and McIntosh is fouled. He misses both free throws and Cortland comes down with a chance to tie it up. Herron with a three pointer at the buzzer but comes up short and the Cardinals win 64-61. I'm exhausted.

Final scores

Plattsburgh 64 Cortland 61

I had this 76-72 Plattsburgh  Defense produced turnovers galore and neither team shot very well except for the smallest guy in the game, Mike Mitchell for the Cardinals, who was 6x8 from the field and all 6 were 3 pointers, none bigger than the last one he hit with 45 seconds left in the game that gave Plattsburgh the lead for good at 62-61. Lamard Herron shot the ball well for the Red Dragons hitting 7x14 from the field and 4x8 from long distance.

Buffalo State 109 New Paltz 99

I said it would be a Buff State win 88-72. Forgot it was track meet when these two hook up.

Oswego State 78 Potsdam 49

I guessed it would be 77-57 Oswego. I was close on the Lakers end but the Bears couldn't get it going as they were never in this game.

Oneonta 67 Fredonia 54

I had it in favor of Oneonta 75-68. Thought there would be a little more offense from both teams. Zac Mager didn't let me down though as his 21 points and 7 rebounds were game high totals in both categories.

Geneseo 82 Hobart 73

Happy for the Blue Knights.  I had them winning 78-77 but they grabbed the lead and kept it throughout. I guess they learned a lesson the other night. They lost one they would like to have back against Fisher but this one looks even better on the resume. Helps out the YAC as well.

5 for 5 so far today with the Golden Eagles of Brockport playing tonight at 8:00 PM. Looking for the sweep. Need John Ivy and Brandon Caruthers to be at their best.

Brockport 81 Roberts Wesleyan 52.

Brockport doesn't disappoint me as Mr. Ivy and Mr. Caruthers come through and lead the Golden Eagles to the Championship of the Wendy's Classic. I had this one 79-71 Brockport and only missed the Eagles total by 2 points. Thought the Redhawks, with their wins over Nazareth and Rochester would score a few more than the 52 they got against Port.

11-1 with my picks over the past 2 days. Let's see which game was the one I lost? Oh yeah my Plattsburgh Cardinals. I will let the boys know about that in practice this week.

Tough loss for the Hawks heading into Christmas break - but what a game!

Wish I could have watched this live...guess the offense woke up but what happened to defense?? Mitchell and Doyley combined for a crazy 58 pts.

Nice to see Donovan and Sowah light it up tonight for NP - looks like from the box score Hawks lost this one due to TOs - 25 to Buff St's 10.

Looking forward to this rematch in the Hawk Center later this year.

Not sure about McCrae...no one seems to much about it...Very frustrating to lose a ROY like that...Hawks lack a true big under the boards - although we out rebounded Buff St 46-36 tonight -- so it isn't impacting us in that dept...

Enjoy the holdiays all...I'll try and be a more diligent poster in the 2nd 1/2 of the season.  :D

Brockport was ahead of Roberts Wesleyan  41-20 at the half.

Now with 6:16 left in the game Brockport leads 75-48

Barring a huge comeback by Roberts Wesleyan the SUNYTAC teams did pretty well in the Wendy's Classic as they combined for a 5-1 record. That will help out our non-conference win percentage a little.

Congratulations to the Brockport Golden Eagles who defeated Roberts Wesleyan 81-52 to win the Championship of the Wendy's College Classic Basketball Tournament.

The Golden Eagles made it look easy as they beat every opponent they faced by a double digit margin. The 1st round was a win over RIT 83-61. The semi-finals saw them dispose of St John Fisher 73-61 and the final was the 29 point win over Roberts Wesleyan who had 2 nice wins over Nazareth and Rochester.

John Ivy was the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles in the tournament with 50 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Caruthers had 36 points and 13 assists in the 3 games. Matt Lee totaled 25 points, 17 rebounds and 8 assists. Patrick Coyle managed 30 points and 24 rebounds during tournament play.

I'm guessing that Ivy was the MVP and both he and Caruthers were on the All Tournament Team.

Edit: Brandon Caruthers was chosen as the MVP of the tournament.      I said I was guessing. ;D

"what a game"...indeed Hawkbill. I was there, got a free ticket from a coach (a friend of Magics'), although I would have paid for this 1! It was an offensive display for the ages.

Justin Mitchell clearly was the star of stars tonight. 35 points on 14-20 shooting (70%) to go along with 6 boards, 4 blocks and 3 steals. Add that to his Friday night total of 27 pts (13-17) 12 boards and 2 blocks and IMHO you have, not only the SUNYAC player of the week, but "easily" a member of the D3Hoops team of the week. I'm not sure who is responsible for nominating Justin for either of those (I'll ask Magicman) but I sure hope that they plan on doing just that! This kid put in work this weekend...with his injured left hand wrapped up!

Clearly he didn't do it by himself tonight. He had help. Bradley Doyley played like Bradley Doyley is supposed to play. On Nov 6th I wrote...Add soph Bradley Doyley who is taking over the pg  position from graduated senior Ant Hamer. Bradley has shown that he is ready for such a challenge in a tough PG conference. With guards like Manning at Plattsburgh and Ivy at Brockport, Bradley will face top notch competition each week in the 'Yac! I believe that he is up to the task!

Tonight he showed that he was truly "up to the task"! His box score shows 23 pts. on 6 of 11 shooting...5 assists, 2 steals with only 1 turnover. Add that to Fridays totals of 5 pts, 8 assists, 2 steals and 0 turnovers and you have the makings of a bonafide point guard. 2 day totals...28 pts., 13 assists,4 steals and 1 turnover. I cant wait to see what his next turnover assist ratio looks like.

Add the play of Rod Epps who had 17 points,7 boards, 3 blocks and took 2 charges!! Along with steady play from newcomers Chris Thompson 18 pts. and 8 boards, Legree Kirkland and freshman Jordan Glover, Rey Jordan, Lovelle Smith and Jovohn Owens (who held Andrew joseph scoreless for over a 7 min stretch in the 1st half) and you have the making of a good weekend!

                                                                   It should be noted that......
Tonight Justin Mitchell surpassed the 1,000 point mark for his career! No small mark for a kid who hasn't played collegiate ball in over 1 year!

IMHO..If he is not SUNYAC POW and D3Hoops team of the week, then something is wrong!

+1 on the congrats to Brockport. Bodes well for the 'Yac. With only 21 non-conference games left for the 'Yac before full fledge war begins, this is a good sign. 5-1 in a tourney with Hobart, U of Rochester and Nazareth, has to be good for the Yac!  :)

PS I couldn't help but notice that Geneseo is playing @ Puget Sound in Tacoma Washington on 12/30 for a 1 game trip? I'm wondering if there is a 2nd game that is not posted yet on the SUNYAC schedule. Seems like 1 helluva journey for 1 game! I could be wrong. Heck I bet the Bills to win the superbowl this past  summer :-[  so I have been wrong before! ;)

If you would have looked at Geneseo's schedule you wouldn't have to wonder!! ;D  Since they already have 25 games listed, you, of all people, would know that they certainly don't want to schedule #26. ??? ;D

But I do agree with you...it's a hell of a road trip for 1 game. :o

5,354 mile "road" trip... for 1 game.... to be exact!! They probably would have been better off, $$$ wise, with just 24 games? ???

Plattsburgh State 64 Cortland 61

The featured SUNYAC  "Game of the Day" certainly lived up to its billing, as the Red Dragons and Cardinals played a contest that was in doubt right up until the final whistle. This game was a see saw battle battle with both teams committing numerous turnovers and steals as a result of the defensive pressure that was applied. The biggest lead in the 1st half was 5 points which only occurred  on one occasion as a single possession was usually the margin that separated the teams. There were 10 lead changes and 7 ties before Lamard Herron got the final exchange, nailing a 3 pointer that came with just 5 seconds left on the clock, to give the Red Dragons a 33-31 halftime edge. Key play for the Cardinals in the period came from back up point guard Mike Mitchell. Mitchell came off the bench and buried 3 huge trifectas for Plattsburgh, that twice rallied the Cardinals. His 3rd three pointer gave them their biggest lead of the half.

The next 20 minutes were every bit as close as the previous 20 minutes. Five more ties and 7 lead changes would take place before the end of the game.  The Cardinals quickly tied it up on 2 Shavar Fields' free throws but Cortland opened up the largest lead of the contest with back to back triples by Herron and Michael Kelly to go on top 39-33. Cardinals would regain the lead on a pair of 3 point plays by Shamoy McIntosh (1 old fashioned variety and 1 trifecta variety) that wrapped around a layup by Jordan Moody and made it 42-41 with 13:27 left to play.  Three more lead changes and 2 ties later, the Red Dragons had moved in front by a 52-47 score, when a 3 pointer by Plattsburgh's Ezra Hodgson narrowed the gap with 7:54 remaining. Lamard Herron then hit a pair of free throws and followed that with a layup on the Red Dragons next possession to once again open up some daylight at 56-50 and match the largest lead of the game. That score came with 5:35 left to play and Cardinals Coach, Tom Curle, called a time out that seemed to help shift the momentum. He reinserted Mitchell back into the game and the smallest guy on the court once again lifted the Cardinals as he buried a deep 3 to cut the lead in half. Following a missed three point attempt by Cortland, Shamoy McIntosh drained a jumper that made it a 1 point game. A Cortland turnover, foul, and missed field goal led to a layup by the Cards John Perez, who then stole the ball and fed Ed Correa who was fouled. Correa made both free throws to give the Cards a 59-56 lead with 2:40 left, that set the stage for the exciting ending. Here was my play by play call from an earlier post.

"Plattsburgh and Cortland going down to the wire as the Cardinals lead 59-56 with 2:40 to go.

Herron with a three pointer at the buzzer but comes up short and the Cardinals win 64-61."

The Cardinals were led by Mike Mitchell, who had his career high game for Plattsburgh with 20 points. Mike buried 6 three pointers in 8 attempts and all 6 were nothing but net. Most of them were several feet behind the arc and they all came at crucial points in the game, none bigger than his 6th and final one that gave the Cardinals the lead for good with 45 seconds left to play. Cortland webcast announcers were speaking about Mitchell with reverence and awe from the moment he nailed his first attempt through the end of the contest. Mitchell also took quite a pounding as he was constantly picking himself up off the floor due to head on collisions by various charging Red Dragons. He drew two offensive fouls but on, at least, 2 or 3 other occasions the ref (and it was the same one) didn't make the right call. One zebra didn't seem to know what constituted a charge and how it differed from a block. At one point the trailing official blew his whistle and was calling a charge when this other guy was calling a block. Poor Mike will have a few black and blues when he wakes up on Sunday, I'm sure.

Shamoy McIntosh was the only other Cardinal to hit double figures as he had 12 points and just missed a double double with 9 rebounds. Shamoy also had 4 steals, 2 assists and that huge block on Garen Spendjian's layup attempt that kept Plattsburgh in the lead with 23 seconds remaining. John Perez added 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Shavar Fields, given a rare start tonight, had 6 points and 9 rebounds. Point guard Chris Manning had 5 assists (seemed like more), 4 rebounds and a steal. The Cardinals got 31 points from their bench today which was the same amount that they received from the starting 5. Neither team shot the ball particularly well, as the Cards were 22x57 from the field (38.6%). They actually shot much better from 3 point range as they were 8x19 (42.1%) but that percentage is misleading because it's entirely due to Mitchell's 6x8.(75%) Take him out of the mix and the Cards were 2 for 17 from downtown (11.7%) Plattsburgh shot 12x17 (70.6%) from the line. They were slightly better than Cortland in the battle of the boards as they had 38 to the Red Dragons 35. There was also a close battle in the turnovers margin as Plattsburgh ended up with 14 and Cortland ended up with 17. Cortland had 10 steals and the Cards had 9.
Cortland shot nearly the same percentages as the Cards.  Dragons were 21x54 from the field (38.9%), 8x24 from long range (33.3%) and 11 x17 from the line (64.7%). Plattsburgh had 1 more made 2 point field goal and 1 more made free throw than did Cortland. They both went to the line 17 times, both had 8 three pointers, and their shooting percentage from the field was almost identical. This game was about as close statistically as you will ever find 2 teams to be.

Cortland was led by Lamard Herron with 21 points. He was 7x14 from the field and hit 4 of 8 from long distance. Herron also added 5 assists and 4 steals. Garen Spendjian had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.  Red Dragons star Kevin McMahon, had a double double with a game high 16 rebounds, 10 points, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals.

Cortland drops their first game of the season as they are now 4-1 overall, 1-1 in conference play. They are off until next Saturday when they will host SUNYIT at 2:00 PM.

Plattsburgh State improves to 4-2 overall, 1-1 in the conference. The Cardinals will now be off for three weeks until they travel to Daytona Beach to take on 2 non conference opponents in the Land of Magic Classic.

First up on December 29th at 6 PM, is Millikin University, from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Millikin is in the midst of a major rebuilding program with a recently hired new coach (now in his 3rd year) and a talented roster of underclassmen. Last year they featured a primary rotation of 8 freshman and they improved from 1-24 to 8-17. This year they are off to a 5-2 mark and own a victory over Loras College, a team that has already knocked off Wheaton College, when they were ranked #5 in the country, and followed that up with a win over Illinois Wesleyan, when they were ranked #2 in the country. The Big Blue, as Millikin is known, will be no easy game for the Cardinals.

The next day the Cardinals will face an even tougher foe, in my opinion, as we take on Univ. of Wisconsin-Stout. from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) considered by many to be the strongest conference in the country. Currently the Massey Ratings have the WIAC conference ranked #3 and the CCIW conference ranked #4. Many times they are 1 & 2 and will probably end up there this year when it's all said and done. UW-Stout played current nationally ranked #4 UW-Whitewater on Saturday afternoon and defeated them by a 74-69 score. I'm fairly certain that UW-Stout will jump from the ORV category of the Top 25 into the rankings next week and could be as high as 19 or 20.

My Cardinals will certainly have their work cut out for them in the coming weeks. Right after the 2 Florida games we return home to Plattsburgh and get ready for our trip to Vermont on January 7th to take on the nationally ranked, #21 Middlebury Panthers, in what will be our final non-conference game of the regular season. The Panthers' conference (NESCAC) is the 5th ranked conference in the Massey Ratings. Even if we lose all three of those games we help out our conference just by playing that level of competition. And it certainly helps our team better prepare for the rigors of life on the road in the SUNYAC. (and hopefully the postseason ;))
