I knew you wouldn't let me down Fran. Thanks for the info on Cortland's DC tournament. I think you might be right, sounds like Catholic wants to pick their opponent based on who they think might be the easier match up for the first round so they'll have a better chance to make their championship game. I hope you spoil their party. 8-) Make sure the guys on the team know that those Cardinals are belittling them. :o  If they think Cortland is an easier matchup for them I wonder who the other two teams are? Did you get that info at all? I'd be interested to know. FWIW, I think you can beat Catholic. I was impressed with how well Cortland has been playing despite all the players lost from last year's team. Coach Spanbauer always does a great job. I expect the Red Dragons will once again be in the hunt and will certainly make the playoffs.

Eastern Connecticut has already beaten Catholic 76-70 on a neutral court earlier in a tournament at Manhattanville. SUNY-Purchase beat Eastern Connecticut 68-62 in Eastern's gym. Purchase also handed visiting Brockport their only loss so far 98-90, in a double overtime thriller, that the Golden Eagles, twice had a shot at the buzzer to win (the end of regulation and the end of the 1st OT). So my logic says, if Brockport can play with Purchase and Purchase can beat Eastern Connecticut, who beat Catholic, then Cortland can beat Catholic, because all of us SUNYAC insiders know, that the top 6 teams in the YAC are pretty darn even. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;D

Also thanks for posting the highlights from the games this past weekend. There were a few times when I wanted to see an instant replay of some of the action in the Cortland-Plattsburgh game (We now have that in our webcasts ;)) and of course I couldn't, but now thanks to you I can replay those highlights all season long. ;D The way the Red Dragons have treated my Cardinals over the past few years I'm happy to have something I can look back on with a smile. :)

Good luck against the 2 Utica teams, we need those two wins. Don't forget to send me the names of the other two teams in the DC tournament if you have them. I knew it wasn't your fault that Cortland hadn't posted the opponent for the DC game. When I went to Catholic's website I was amazed that they had no info. (And still don't I might add.)

And was that Bobby Comstock doing the play by play of the webcasts? Sounded like him.

One last thing. I think Mike Mitchell  was channelling his inner Jeremy Smith from February 12th, 2011. That was the night when Smith came to Plattsburgh and set Memorial Hall on fire as he hit 7-9 from long distance, and Cortland beat us 83-69.
Mike was almost as good, going 6x8 from downtown, but stroking the game winning 3 with 45 seconds left made up for the slightly smaller number.  (Smith did have lots of help that night as the Red Dragons buried a total of 15 from behind the arc. :o) I'll never forget that display!! 8-)

I just hope he was nominated by your SID for the D3hooops Team of the Week. Can't be 5 guys in the country with better stats than Justin had in the past week. One or two maybe but not five. (And maybe not even 1 or 2) Happy for him.

I have no doubt that our SID has nominated Justin for D3Hoops team of the week.  We have the best SID in SUNYAC and he stays on top of stuff like that!

Magicman,

Thanks for the kind words, as always. It was an exciting game Saturday, and the Cardinals made the big plays late.

I don't mean to imply anything about Catholic's tournament scheduling. I have no idea why the tournament field was released when it was. Here's the schedule for the tournament:

Saturday, January 4th
2 p.m. - Misericordia vs. St. Joseph's (Maine)
4 p.m. - Catholic vs. Cortland

Saturday, January 5th
2 p.m. - Consolation game
4 p.m. - Championship game

Based on last year's results, and this year's start, I'm not sure Cortland is the team you choose as the easiest win in the field. Nothing against the other two teams, mind you, but I don't think Catholic chose Cortland for that reason. Just my opinion...

And Bengals Rule - you're right - your SID is one of the best I've worked with during my 23 years at Cortland. You're very lucky to have him.

You're right Fran, they chose the wrong team for an easy first game. I'm pretty sure Cortland would win a matchup against those other 2 teams. Could be the championship game is played on the first day. Thanks for getting that info to me.

PS:  I just checked with Mr. Massey. Cortland would be favored by 10 over Misericordia, and Corts would be favored by 6 over St Joe's. Catholic is favored by 4 over Cortland, basically the home court edge. I'm fairly confident the Red Dragons will go at least 1-1 in DC and a decent chance  to come home with the hardware.

Catholic is favored by 10 over St Joe's and by 13 over Misericordia.

The Saturday Jan 4th game between Catholic and Cortland at 4 PM will have a webcast so I'll be tuned in.

Catholic now has the game with Cortland listed on their website. Still nothing about the other 2 teams.

New D3hoops Top 25 is out.  Here's the link:  http://d3hoops.com/top25/men/2013-14/week3

No East Region team in the Top 25 as Hobart falls completely off the charts with their 2 losses over the weekend. I was surprised they even made it into the Top 25. A number of East Region teams were more worthy than the Statesmen.

One of them is Brockport and the Golden Eagles are getting some attention as they picked up 15 votes and come in at #36. The Wendy's Classic Champions will not be back on the court for over 3 weeks and may suffer in the polls because of that. They return to action when they travel to Hamilton on December 30th to take on the Continentals, a game I think they will win.

NYU comes in at #37 with 5 votes. Every year the Violets get some early love due to the easy pickins they put together on their non-con schedule. As I mentioned in another post, earlier today, their opponents have a combined 14-25 record. Not the stuff that legends are made of. Massey has 3 SUNYAC teams all with losses on their record ranked ahead of unbeaten NYU.

No other East Region team received a mention this week.  SUNYAC hopes will have to ride the wings of the Golden Eagles for the time being. I don't see any of the other teams getting much support unless someone like Plattsburgh, Cortland, Geneseo, or Oswego can put together a substantial winning streak. The problem as usual is that we take turns beating up on each other (Oswego over Plattsburgh, Plattsburgh over Cortland in just the first weekend of action) and unless one of the aforementioned teams goes on a nice run we will remain on the outside of the Top 25.

This was my post yesterday about NYU receiving votes in the Top 25 poll. Right on cue, the minute the Violets play a team with a modicum of success, they can't get the job done.

In overtime...NYU (6-0) 65   Stevens Tech (3-3) 68

These are the Massey rankings for the top teams in the East Region as of today. SUNYAC teams occupy the top 3 spots and 5 of the top 6 positions.

#20  Brockport State.
#49  Plattsburgh State
#60  Cortland State
#62  NYU
#78  Oswego State
#101 Geneseo State
#110 Skidmore
#116 St. John Fisher
#118 Hobart
#138 Buffalo State
#147 Clarkson
#149 Stevens Tech
#170 Rochester

Dropped out of Massey's Top 13 East Region teams: Nazareth and New Paltz replaced by Clarkson and Rochester.

If I had to venture on what the East NCAA rankings would be like up to this point based on record and the eye test, it would look like this:

1- Brockport St
2-Plattsburgh St
3- Oswego St
4- Buffalo St
5- Oswego St
6- Stevens
7- NYU
8- Cortland
9-St John Fisher
10- Hobart

Did not mean to put Oswego at 5. Bump everyone up one and put Skidmore at 9.

You're supposed to do this:

Justin Mitchell is named to the D3Hoops team of the week. Here is the write up:

Justin Mitchell
Mitchell averaged 31.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in a pair of SUNYAC wins. The senior had a double-double with 27 points and 12 boards in an 89-68 win over Oneonta on Friday, and then scored a career-best 35 points in a 109-99 win over New Paltz on Saturday. He shot 73 percent from the field and also had six blocks in the two games.

Here's the link for the Team of the Week: http://d3hoops.com/awards/tow/2013-14/week3

There wasn't even a question of...would Justin would make the Team of the Week? It was just a matter of when it would be announced! Good job Justin. Get all of those 35 point games out of your system before you take on Plattsburgh State. ;D

Justin is the first SUNYAC player to make the Team of the Week this year. Hopefully not the last.

Dude..give me a break. Ive been checking d3 hoops every 3 hours for 3 days. Nothing up as of 9 p.m. last night. Started watching a re-run of Antwone Fisher  (always makes me cry  :'( ) around 11  and then just as I was about to crash, I tried to tackle Candy crush 1 more time :-[. As I went to place my phone on the charger I thought "Hmmm lets see if D3hoops has announced the week 2 team yet" (Dec 2nd-9th) ??? . Low and behold at 1:30 am there it was. Posted asap on my phone (after In texted a couple of coaches I know..hope I didnt wake them up) and then crashed. Had planned on doing a much more detailed display today but something told me that someone would be cruising this site long after I'm asleep and do justice to Justin (thats ryhmes?!)

And of course...the Magic 1 didn't let me, or Justin, down. ;). You are alright in my book...I don't care what dcahill OR Hawkbill say about you! :)

Sometimes it pays to check out the other regions boards. I never do...until today. Thought I'd take a peek at what is being said about/by fans of our next 2 opponents, Carthage and North Central. Thier boards appear to have been around years before the SUNYAC boards started. Coupled with the fact that many of thier regular posters are listed as "All-American" ( i.e. 3 on the last page of their most recent post) as opposed to our boards where the only regular poster who has that rank is Magicman. The bear is listed as "all-Conference" and he too is usually a regular as is JDEX who is listed as "All-region".. I expect to hear from both of them often as the season progresses! Those posters over there also seem to be alot more knowledgeable about whats going on within their conference as to who didnt play and who did and records broken and etc etc. Smart crew over there.

What caught my eye today was the following post by someone over there when assesing the next few games of Carthage (BENGALS next opponent).

"Carthage isn't very deep in the bigs (PF and C).  Marlon Senior has played great so far and Mike Kastel likes to rebound and fight in the paint, but there's a pretty big dropoff from those two to the backups and I don't think any of Van Wyk, McNellis or Valentine could be very successful with starter minutes.

They have more depth at guard/small forward and will have even more when Malcom Kelly returns, but even then, this team is not going more than eight deep.

With regards to scheduling, Carthage has played 4 Top 100 D3 teams (according to Massey), 2 weaker D3 teams, a very good NAIA team and a not so good USCAA team.   They have two other Top 100 D3 (Platteville and Eastern Conn) teams left in the nonconference schedule along with an ok Buffalo St, so I think it's been a good schedule to prep them for CCIW play."

Good stuff!  ;)

As soon as I read your post I knew you were talking about, "bopol", as he is the main poster for Carthage College on the CCIW board. "AndOne" is the main poster for North Central College. I read the CCIW board daily and have for years.  I occasionally comment there but mostly lurk, and have spoken with many of the posters on that board. However there is also a CCIW Pick Em League board on that same Midwest Region page. Just who do you think runs that CCIW Pick EM League? And would have some knowledge about those CCIW teams you are about to play? Your friendly, neighborhood, magicman, that's who. That's right, some guy over here in Plattsburgh N.Y. runs the Pick Em League of 8 teams located in Illinois and Wisconsin. Betcha didn't see that one coming my friend. ;D
