Call me impressed......

I emailed k massey ( of massey ratings fame) to inquire as to why our victory (Buff State) over North Central has not been posted on the massey ratings. I had been told earlier, by the sage 1, that if the NCAA does not recieve the score then he, massey, has nothing to report (since he gets his info directly from the NCAA).

I emailed him this morning around 11:37. At 12:33 (56 mins later) this was his reply......

"Arthur,
No, the NCAA didn't have those games in the report this morning.  Hopefully the SID will submit them so they can be included in next week's update.
Thanks."

Call me impressed with such a quick response from someone who gathers data for all collegiate sports!

Magicman...truly impressed that you paid that sum to support your team!  Me...did not paid the lesser sum to watch my WBB game in Las Vegas.  Gave myself the excuse it was too late for me to watch :).

Plattsburgh State leads UW-Stout 22-19 at the half.

Sloppy first half by both teams as they combined for 24 turnovers. fortunately the Cardinals were on the short end of that statistic with 9 TO's to 15 for Stout. Both teams shooting poorly with 32% for each. Stout is 8x25, Plattsburgh is 7x22. Both also cold from long range. Stout 1x6 and the Cards 2x10. Plattsburgh is getting killed on the boards 23 to 8. They better turn that stat around or this lead will be short lived. I'm amazed we have the lead. Poor shot selection and some really bad turnovers. Stout has missed a lot of in close shots by their big guys. If they start making those this could get ugly. Lets go Plattsburgh... Play smart!!

Shamoy McIntosh with 5 points, John Perez and Shavar Fields with 4 each to lead the Cards

Stout with 8 points from Aaron Jenny and 5 from Hank Kujak.

As I said amh63, I did get to watch a lot of games for the money. The other factor was I got to see the Bowdoin Women play 2 games, as they are at the same tournament in Florida.  My favorite women's player is  Plattsburgh State's Coach Curle's daughter Marle. She's a freshman at Bowdoin and already a starter. First time I've ever paid to watch an online game but this is my ninth game for my 10 bucks. A bargain I guess. ;D

Plattsburgh has come out of the break and opened up a double digit 39-23 lead over UW-Stout with 10:27 left in the game.

Cardinals have extended their lead to 47-25 as McIntosh and Correa got hot from long distance.

magicman

Plattsburgh State defeats UW-Stout 62-40 as the Cardinals go 2-0 in Florida. The Curle family enjoys a 4-0 weekend as Coach Curle's daughter Marle, who's a starting guard for the Bowdoin women also goes 2-0 in Daytona with a pair a wins. They will have a pleasant trip back to Plattsburgh I'm sure. Good job by the Cardinals to help the YAC with a nice pair of non-conference wins. 8-) I'll do a wrap up on the game a bit later.

Just went to post all my predictions for these three games and hit something that deleted my entire post. Now that's enough to make a grown man cry. Not the first time it's happened and won't be the last but man, I'm one PO'ed dude. Here's my predictions without the write up. Sorry

Brockport State  vs    Hamilton      6:00 PM   @ Medaille College

Brockport is favored by 13.  I see them winning 85-71. Coach Stockwell for Hamilton is familiar with the style the Golden Eagles play, having coached for a few years at Oswego. But that won't help him tonight. Brockport could move into the D3hoops Top 25 with a pair of wins at this tournament. They are currently in 32nd place but a lot of teams in front of them have lost since the last poll.

Oneonta State  at    Averett      7:00 PM

Oneonta is a 1 point underdog. I think Zach Mager will save the day. Red Dragons win this one 86-82.

Geneseo State  at    Puget Sound      7:00 PM

Will the Blue Devils 6000 mile round trip for this 1 game be worth it. I hope so. I think the West Coast teams are weak this year. I'll take the Blue Knights who are favored by 3 points to win this one 74-70.

magicman

Brockport State leads Hamilton 31-22 at the half.

Brockport jumped out to a 15-6 advantage but the Continentals came back to close with 2 at 15-13 with 10 minutes left in the period. The Eagle would put together another 11-1 spurt to make it 26-14 with 7 minutes left. Hamilton managed to get it back to single digits as the period ended.

John Ivy with 13 points,4 rebounds and 3 steals to lead Brockport. Patrick Coyle has 8 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Matt Hart has 12 points for Hamilton. Nobody else has more than 2.

magicman

The YAC is on a roll:

Brockport defeats Hamilton by a score of 74-62 .

John Ivy with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Patrick Coyle with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Port.

Oneonta leads Averett 47-37 at the half.

Dan Lee with 20 points and Zach Mager with 10. Lee is just on fire from 3 point land...5 for 6 so far from beyond the arc.

Geneseo leads Puget Sound at the half 35-24.

Jordan Jones with 11 and Connor Fedge with 7 to lead the Knights.

GO YAC!!  Could a 4-0 sweep be in the CARDS.  The CARDS have aslready had a 4-0 sweep of their own. ;D

Plattsburgh State 62 UW-Stout 40

Nice win for the Cardinals today and will make for a joyous trip back to the 'Burgh.

Cardinals took control of this game early in the 2nd half with an 11-2 run that opened up a double digit lead for the first time at 33-21. It started with a quick layup by Shavar Fields on the Cards 1st possession. That was followed by a jumper from Shamoy McIntosh and then a 3 pointer by McIntosh. After a layup by John Perez made it 31-21, McIntosh got a steal and fed Fields who slammed it home for the 12 point lead. Stout managed another free throw and Ed Correa hit a 3 pointer for the Cards. Stout added another free throw and  McIntosh buried another trifecta. Getting 3 points to Stout's 1 quickly built the lead to 16 and after a pair of free thows by the Blue Devils, Ezra Hodgson made a nice move in traffic for a layin and McIntosh buried another 3. That made it 44-25 and it was time to light up the cigar. The lead would grow to 26 and Coach Curle would empty his bench with 2:23 left in the game.

Plattsburgh was led by Shamoy McIntosh who tossed in a game high 22 points (7x13 fg, 4x8 3's, 4x4 ft) and also had a game high 7 rebounds. His 3 point shooting and 17 2nd half points was the key to creating the separation from the Blue Devils. Shamoy also had a game high 35 minutes on the floor. Shavar Fields with his 3rd straight start was the 2nd high scorer in the game with 14 points (5x6 fg, 4x4 ft) and 4 rebounds. It marked the 2nd game in a row that Shavar was almost perfect shooting the rock. His stats for the 2 Florida games are 10x13 from the field (77%) and 11x11 from the line (I guess we know what % that is) ;D.  The big guy has responded quite nicely in his starting role, although it does reduce the impact he had when coming off the bench to provide a spark to the Cardinals as he has done numerous times already this year. Four times this season he has scored between 16 and 18 points coming off the bench.
John Perez had 6 points, 3 steals 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Point Guard Chris Manning had 4 assists, with 3 steals and Ed Correa had 8 points and 2 assists. Alan Siergiej who doesn't see a lot of action came in and gave the Cards 13 big minutes to spell our forwards. Alan finished with 2 points, an assist, a rebound, and a steal. Once again the Cardinals were shorthanded as normal starter Jordan Moody was not in action.

Cardinals shot much better in the 2nd half with percentages of 52% from the field 38.5% from long range and 75% from the line. The turnovers were limited to only 3 in the 2nd period after 9 TO's in the opener.

They ended up overall shooting 20x47 from the field (42.6%), 7x23 from long distance (30.4%), and 15x20 from the line (75%).
Cards were killed on the boards 38-21.  Stout had 15 offensive rebounds alone and usually a stat  like that will put you in the winners circle. Plattsburgh ended up with 12 turnovers to 23 for the Blue Devils.  Our points off their turnovers (23) was better than their 2nd chance points off all those offensive rebounds (10). Add in the points they got off our turnovers (9) and we still come out ahead. The boys were much better sharing the ballt oday as we had 18 assists as a team compared to only 10 yesterday. Defensively we held Stout to only 5 field goals in the 2nd half and 2 of those came in the final 1:24 after Coach Curle emptied his bench. So basically our regular rotation held them to 3 2nd half field goals. Not bad against a team from the WIAC.

Stout was led by guard Aaron Jenny with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Brett Ahsenmacher added 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Hank Kujack had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. The Blue Devils ended up shooting 13x46 from the field (28.3%) and only 3x16 from long distance (18.8%). They were 11x15 from the line (73.3%).

Plattsburgh with a modest 3 game winning streak is only a mere 7 points from being undefeated. They improve to 6-2 for the season and will be off until they face the 19th ranked Middlebury Panthers in Middlebury Vermont on January 7th. Maybe this is the year we can end another losing streak as we haven't beaten the Panthers since February 5th 2008. We've had a few go right down to the wire since then but haven't had a victory in 5 years. It would have been easier if they were due for a visit to Memorial Hall this year but the last time we won it was in their house so maybe we can pull it off.

Massey currently has the Cardinals at #58. We were at #43 on December 15th with a 4-2 record. After Cortland and Potsdam both lost we slowly sunk lower and lower even though we didn't play a game. Even after our win yesterday we dropped from 57 to 58. I hope that once all the missing scores get caught up that we could rise into the 40's at least. Middlebury is currently #40. Richard Stockton who is ranked #12 only beat us by 4 points on their court. I would think that would count for more than we are getting credit for.

Nice day at the office for the SUNYAC Conference  4-0 against the other guys.

Oneonta wins by double figures in Danville, Virginia as they defeat Averett College 92-79. I was pretty sure it was going to be a track meet as I had it 86-82 Oneonta. Zach Mager didn't let me down as I said he would be the best player on the floor and he ended up with 27 points. I didn't count on teamate Dan Lee hitting seven 3 pointers and dropping in 30 points. That would be called gravy. Good job guys.

Geneseo defeats Puget Sound out in Tacoma, Washington, 80-66 and makes their 6000 mile journey worth it. (I guess ???) Is that longer than the Hobbit had to travel? Jordan Jones 16, Gordon Lyons 12, Matt Curry 11, and Connor Fedge with 9 lead the Knights.  Lyons had 13 rebounds to go with those 12 points. Have a safe trip home guys.  I had this one  74-70 Geneseo.

Whew. Back home in Buffalo. 86 degrees when I left Orlando and 36 when I land in Buffalo :'( . I've had a chance to wrap up the weekends events and I must say...I feel pretty good about them there BENGALS heading into 2014!

Chris Thompson, who missed 3 of the first 5 games (including losses to Ohio Northern and John Carroll) stepped up big time this weekend and showed by the BENGAL faithful have a lot of hope for this guy. Chris averaged a double-double for the weekend (13.5 pts and 10.5 boards) in the 2 victories vs the CCIW "middle of the pack" teams - Carthage and North Central.  Throw in "MR. All World" Justin Mitchell  who did  what....Justin does. He averaged 21pts  for the weekend and 8.5 boards.  Equally impressive was how these 2 big men matched up against the bigs of Carthage and North Central. Mitchell/Thompson combined for 38 points and 22 rebounds vs. the tandem of Marlon Senior and Mike kastel who had 21 pts and 13 boards. Even better was their effort vs Pre-season All American and 3 time 1 st teamer Landon Gamble and 6' 7 Jack Burchett with the good guys (BENGALS) putting in 31 pts and 16 boards vs Gamble /Burchett who had 22 and 10 boards.

Junior Rod Epps averaged 18 pts for the weekend (12 and 22) and Freshman Jordan Glover averaged 8.5 (not to mention his clutch 3 pointer vs Carthage with 1:11 left in the game, which tied it up at 63). Add a little Bradley Doyley, who nearly averaged double digits in assists (9 per game) and you have the mix for a decent weekend. Starting forward Maurice miles had to sit both games out and Chris Castren , who was injured in game 1 also sat out all of game 2. 12 people played in both games and everyone contributed in what was clearly a team effort!!

Expected more from the bench (3 pts game 1). However they did put up 15 in game 2 , led by soph Chris Boyd. What most don't know is how they, the bench, were extremely helpful in stopping Carthage in the 2nd half of their victory on Friday night. You may remember how Coach Ansari took out all the starters at the 15:14 mark of the 2nd period and went with 4 freshman and junior Legree Kirkland. What I failed to tell you was that over the next 6 mins that crew (along with Chris Boyd ) held Carthage to 4 field goals- 2 by Marlon Senior, 1 by Cameron Van Wyk and 1 by Mike Kastel. Van Wyks' field goal came at 10:25. What many did not know was that Carthage would not score another field goal for the rest of the game! That's right from the 10:25 mark of the 2nd half all they, Carthage, could only muster 13 free throws, not a single field goal. Hot damn (even as I'm writing this I'm getting excited!!!) That is probably the most impressive stat that this BENGAL supporter has seen from this team in quite some time. The starters gradually worked there way in by the 8 minute mark...kept the pressure up that the young "scrap dogs" had begun, and the rest was history.

With 14 non league games left the 'Yac is 33-24 (or something close to that). Here's hoping that we can finish 2013 14-0, which would put the 'Yac at 47-24 (almost 2 to 1 victories over defeats).

Ps Glad to hear that Magicman and thebear survived the big ice storm that hit the North country! :)

Happy Holidays to ALL ! ;)

If we keep running the non-leaque table, then my Dec 23rd wish may come true. What are we now? 40-24?? ;). Congrats to the Cards for a DBDSBW (Double Barrel Daytona Style Butt Whuppin). Congrats to Geneseo for flying cross country to stake SUNYAC superiority claim in another state and conference (Northwest Conference). Ditto for Oneonta setting the state of Virginia straight, and the USA South Conference, as to where the best basketball is played. I was at the Brockport vs. Hamilton game and again the 'Yac, showed the NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference, home of defending D3 Champion Amherst and also Middlebury and Williams college), that we can hold our own a neutral floor!

With Brockport playing at Medaille (vs the hosts) and Cortland at Utica, the 'Yac has a chance to go 9-0 since Dec 22nd!

magicman

After an outstanding 4-0 sweep on Monday the SUNYAC's record vs Non-Conference opponents presently stands at 37-24. There are 9 remaining games to be played and that will equal 70 total games. Remember 10 teams each playing 7 non-conference games equals 70 games.

Several weeks ago we were looking at 69 games because Brockport's schedule only showed 6 non-conference games. The schedule showed them playing a game at Hamilton as their final OOC game. However that Hamilton game was the first game of a tournament at Medaille. What the schedule didn't show was a TBA for game 2 of the tournament which has turned out to be the host, Medaille. The 2 teams will square off for the championship at 3 PM on Tuesday afternoon. So every YAC team will have played their maximum 7 out of conference games. The best we can do if we go undefeated in those remaining 9 games (which ain't gonna happen) would be 46-24.

Here's our remaining Non-Conference schedule and how I think we'll do.

Dec. 31
Cortland State   at   Utica  1:00 PM   makeup from 11/26; location now Utica   Cortland should win this game, but then I said that about the SUNYIT game also. Can't believe the Red Dragons will lose to both Utica teams.

Brockport State  at    Medaille      3:00 PM    Medaille Holiday Tournament.   Mavericks with their 4th attempt to win a game against the YAC. Lost the other 3 games by a combined 9 points... to Buff State (by 5), Geneseo (by 2) and Cortland (by 2). They won't get lucky here either. Port wins this one.

Jan. 1
Oneonta State   at   Greensboro      2:00 PM     After handling Averett on Monday I think these Red Dragons will handle Greensboro on Wednesday. I think Averett is better than Greensboro. Another win for the YAC.

Jan. 4
Cortland State  at    Catholic      4:00 PM     Opening round of Catholic's 4 team tournament
This is a tough one to predict. If the Cortland team that played Plattsburgh shows up then the Red Dragons win. If it's the team that played SUNYIT then they lose. I'll go out on a limb and pick Cortland to upset the Tournament hosts.

New Paltz State  at    Hamilton      4:00 PM  Hard to pick the Hawks here. I think that Hamilton wins it at home.

SUNY-Cobleskill   at   Oswego State      4:00 PM   Desert is served for the Lakers. Another ho hum win.

Jan. 5
Cortland State      TBA   at   Catholic Univ. Tournament @ Washington, DC      Cortland will win this game whoever they play.
opponent will be either Misericordia or St Joseph's (Maine)

Jan. 7
Manhattanville   at   Potsdam State      7:00 PM  If Potsdam has their big man back they could win. Without him they don't. For now I'm putting it in the loss column

Plattsburgh State  at    Middlebury       7:30 PM  If this game was in Plattsburgh I'd pick the Cards. At Middlebury makes it tough to do so. I'll do the reverse logic thing and pick the Panthers and hope that it works so the Cards can win. So it's in the loss column.

That gives us a hypothetical 6-3 record in our 9 remaining games. If that happens we would end up with a 43-27 record, good enough for a .614 winning percentage. That would boost us up the ladder in the Massey Ratings and I think we would crack the Top Ten.

The NCAA would count our record at 39-27 since we have 4 games that they won't count and of course they are all wins. Our winning percentage would be .590 for their purposes. Still a pretty good figure and one that's higher than it's been in recent years I believe. Plus there are more quality wins this year than in years past. Should help us at tournament selection time especially if we have the possibility of a 3rd SUNYAC team getting into the dance.

Two games scheduled for the final day of 2013. Hope they turn out like yesterday's games did.

Dec. 31

Cortland State   at   Utica  1:00 PM

The Red Dragons are looking to get rid of the sour taste in their mouth that's been aggravating them ever since December 13th. That was the day they let SUNYIT walked out of Corey Gym with a W that was an early Christmas gift for the Wildcats. Beating the Pioneers of Utica College won't completely erase those bad memories but it will help. And if they can ride into Washington DC and come home with a pair of wins there, then they will head back into conference play with a much better frame of mind. The Pioneers are 4-3 but none of their 4 wins have come against a team with a winning record.  Both teams coming off long layoffs and the point spread has Cortland favored by an 8 point margin. I don't see Utica playing a lot of defense and Cortland has only had 1 bad game defensively. I think the Red Dragons will win and I believe the margin will be double digits. I see it something like 85- 71 Cortland.

Brockport State  at    Medaille      3:00 PM

Brockport is looking to end the year with a 6-1 record. Only an overtime loss to nationally ranked #21 SUNY-Purchase, on the road,  has kept the Golden Eagles from gaining Top 25 status themselves. Had they won that game they would probably be the team with the #21 ranking. A victory today however, will put them in a prime position to move into the Top 25 when the next poll is released on or about January 6th. Right now they are #32 and there are at least 5 teams ranked higher than the Eagles that have lost 1 or 2 games since the last poll and most certainly will fall below them. Depending on what happens over the next 6 days will determine if Brockport can leapfrog over enough teams to crack the Top 25. In addition to the 5 teams that I believe Brockport will jump over there are 4 other teams with a recent loss that will drop in the polls but not enough to aid the Golden Eagles. However if any of those 4 teams incur another loss (and they all have games in the next few days) they might fall out of the poll completely, and we only need 2 more teams to stumble for Port to slip in the Top 25.

The Medaille Mavericks have got to be one of the best 3-6 teams in the East Region. The Mavericks have lost 3 close games to YAC teams and also a 3 point loss to St. John Fisher. Unfortunately for them Brockport is the best team they will have to face all year. Anything is possible in the 350 seat Sullivan Center, of course, so an upset isn't out of the question. But the Golden Eagles have too much firepower and are too well coached, so I don't see that happening. The oddsmakers have made Brockport 12 point favorites and I think that's probably about right. This one looks like an up tempo affair so I'll take the Golden Eagles by an 86-73 margin.

Plattsburgh State got its 2 lines on the front page Monday night. Here's the quote:

"Plattsburgh State punished UW-Stout, which was playing without its top two scorers in Daytona Beach, 62-40. The Cardinals shot 52 percent in the second half."

I know it wasn't a well known fact but Plattsburgh State played that game without 2 starters as well. Jordan Moody who started most games last year (23 of 29) and 5 of 6 games this year didn't play in either game at Daytona Beach. Jordan is averaging 11.8 ppg.

Also senior Reggie Williams our biggest big man (6'6", 240 lbs) who cracked the starting lineup last year for the final 6 games and who made great improvement by years end (averaged 10.0 ppg and 5.3 rpg in those 6 starts) has an injury that has kept him from action  during the current season. We are hopeful Reggie can return in January once conference play starts up again.

Plattsburgh punished Stout on the defensive more than anything as the regular Cardinal rotation only gave up three 2nd half field goals to the Blue Devils. :o
